 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

   'En vue de permettre le réglage rotatif de la came par rapport au chariot 48, celle-ci est de préférence montée sur un porte-came rotatif 61, à son tour porté par le cha- riot. Le porte-oame est le plus clairement représenté sur les figures 1, 2 et 4. Il comporte une plaque plane et il est

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

  "Improvements to cone-cutting devices" The present invention relates to dies and, more particularly to devices making it possible to cut conical threads with these dies, the length of which is not limited to the width of the cutting combs employed.

    The description # below indicates a die of the type with pivoting comb holder supports, that is to say a die in which the comb holder supports are articulated on the body of the die and arranged to be actuated by a ring surrounding this die body. A die of this kind, in combination with a device for cutting oonic threads, has been described by US Pat. No. 16,665,973 in the name of Samuel F. Newman, dated July 11, 1925. The essential difference between the object of the present invention and this prior device consists in that the device for cutting oblique threads according to the present invention is adjustable with a cone which causes the previous die, but which was not precise.

  Dies with pivoting supports are generally intended to be opened by rotation, relative to the body of the die, of the ring actuating the supports.

 cutting of the thread by controlling the rotational movement of the mower actuating the supports. As soon as the thread has been cut to the desired length, the ringing ring of the supports is quickly turned to release the combs from the workpiece.

   Said prior patent describes a ring with a flat face for controlling the progressive opening of the pivoting comb holder supports during the cutting operation, to produce a tapered thread. Since the use of a straight face cam does not theoretically give a regular taper due to the fact that the cutting diameter must increase uniformly at all times, and the uniform increase in diameter is not obtained by a uniform rotation of the ring actuating the supports, the error introduced is of negligible importance.

   However, a different inclination cam is required for each distinct and appreciable diameter area of the die, i.e. a small change in diameter during the cutting operation of one. Taper thread does not appreciably affect the angle of the taper, but an appreciable change in the initial diameter of the die requires a cane of different inclination, if the taper is to be very precise.

       At the time of its application, the die according to said earlier patent was operating very satisfactorily with the tolerances then allowed. But today some of these tolerances have become so tight that in many cases it would be necessary to use a large number of canes with minutely different inclinations in order to cover the entire action area. diameter of the die.

   To avoid this expense and to give flexibility to the machine, the present invention provides a new device for adjusting the inclination of the cam so that the latter can be inclined in order to compensate for the error of the cone attached. at each diameter of the sector's action zone.

   Accordingly, the main object of the present invention is to provide a tapered thread cutting device, adjustable to cut threads of different diameters and confined with means allowing compensation for errors arising from the diametral adjustment of the device. if.

   Another important object of the present invention is to provide a device for cutting tapered threads which has a new adjustable cam device to compensate for certain errors associated with this device, and which is also adjustable to allow the size of threads. conical with appreciably different eagles
One between object of the present invention is! combining, with a taper thread cutting device, means for indicating the degree of compensation for different cones and diameters.

   Another object of the present invention is to provide an adjustable device for cutting cones which can be adapted to certain existing dies, which is very robust and which can nevertheless be developed to give a cone-cutting device. will emerge during the description below, with reference to the accompanying drawing.

   Figure 3 is a side elevation of the die according to Figure 1, as seen from the left side of that figure and at the time of release.

   Figure 4 is a top plan view of the die from Figures 1 to 3 at the time of release.

   FIG. 5 is a partial sectional view showing the device for the diametral adjustment of the die according to FIGS. 1 to 4.

   According to this drawing, in which the same reference numerals designate the same elements in all the figures and, more particularly, according to Figures 1, 2 and 3, the die is provided with a tubular extension 10, intended to be housed in a suitable bore of a machine, such as a turret lathe, and to carry all the members of this die.

   A head element 11 is mounted and centered with the aid of an extension 12 in order to be able to perform limited oscillating movements inside the extension 10 and this element carries the cutting combs, as will be described later. .

   A reset plate 13 is interposed between the head element 11 and a flange 14 of the extension 10, and it is fixed to the element 11 by any suitable means (not shown). A rim 15 of the plate 13 cooperates with marks on the flange 14 to indicate the adjustment position of the head element 11 relative to the extension. An adjusting ring 16 and a control ring 17 for the combs are fitted to the head element 11 and their mounting is such that they can perform oscillating movements relative to this element.

   Locking pins (not shown) are employed to prevent relative rotation between the extension 10 and the adjusting ring 16. These pins are pressed into the annular flange 14 to cooperate with suitably formed holes in the setting ring. adjustment, as shown by the aforementioned U.S. Patent No. 1,665,973. The reset plate 13 is made integral with the head element 11 and, in cooperation with a peripheral rib 20 of the head element 11, retains rings 16 and 17 in their suitable axial position.

   The head element is blocked against any axial displacement with respect to the extension by screws 19, fitting into sleeves 21 recessed in the flange 14 and screwed into the adjusting ring 16. They are provided with a shoulder intended to provide just enough clearance to allow the reset plate 13 to rotate relative to the extension. Circular arc grooves 22, formed in the plate 13, allow a limited relative rotation between the plate and the extension not constrained by the presence of the screws 19.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

   The adjusting ring 16 is used for the diametrical focusing of the head element and is actuated by a set screw 24, mounted rotatably in a housing 25 of the ring 16. This screw meshes with a helical toothing. 26 provided on the head element 11.

   The head element 11 carries supports 27 for the cutting combs which are pivotally mounted by screws 28 screwed into the journals (not shown). The supports 27 are arranged to be actuated by sliding blocks 29, mounted on axes 31 which, in turn, are fixed on the oscillating ring 18, any movement of this ring 17 around the head element 11 having the effect to rotate the comb supports 27 around their pivots in the head element 11, and to determine the position of the tangential combs 32, carried by these supports 27 and maintained in different diametral positions, as a function of the degree of rotation of the ring 17.

   The punches are normally returned to the outside by a spring 33, housed in a recess 34 of the adjustment ring 16, This recess is approximately tangent to the head element 11 and it opens out on the neighboring face of the ring 17. The spring 33 bears at one end against a pin 35 integral with the oscillating ring 17 and which engages in the recess 34. At its other end, the spring 33 engages in a recess narrower 36 which opens onto the peripheral surface of the ring 16. The recess 36 is closed by a hollow threaded cap 37 which receives the outer end of the spring 33 and which can be adjusted to vary the compression. of said spring.

   As a result, the spring 33 biases the ring 17 in a clockwise direction (as shown in Figure 1) and, through the axes of the and blocks 29, tends to oscillate the supports 27 and the combs 32 in a clockwise direction, to open the die. When the die is open, the pin 35 abuts against the bottom of the recess 34 to limit the movement of the ring 17. This ring 17 is also provided with a handle 38, for returning the combs to the cutting position once they have been removed.

   . Up to this point, the mechanical constitution is more or less that which was represented by US Patent No. 1,665,973, modified to include some of the die improvements shown in US Patent No. 1,760,568 of November 5, 1925 in the name by Harry T. SHERAER.

   In fact, the die according to the present invention has been designed in such a way that it is possible to convert that described by this US Pat. No. 1,760,568 into a die according to the invention with a minimum of modification. tions. To allow this transformation, the bushes 21 have been substituted for the normal withdrawal springs, since the present die is not intended to be recalled or opened by a return pull. The screws 19 now cooperate with the bushes to join the extension and the adjusting ring 16 with sufficient axial play to allow the reset plate 13 to rotate with the head member 11.

   In this way, and while avoiding the relative rotation between the adjusting ring 16 and the extension one hundred ten, with the aid of the locking pins (not shown), the screws 19 and the stop sleeves 20 are employed for prevent any axial movement between the anterior and posterior elements of the die, that is to say between the head element, the annular frame which surrounds it and

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 the tail extension.

   On the other hand, the invention now provides for shorter locking pins (not shown) which only extend into the adjusting ring 16, since, if they extend into the oscillating ring 17, this last would always be blocked against any rotation. ,, Finally, it is now sufficient to machine the periphery of the annular frame and of the extension for the assembly of the new adjustable mechanism of conical size, which will be described below.

   This new, conical-sized adjustable mechanism is mounted on a carriage which, in turn, is mounted to move longitudinally on the die on a guide and the adjustment ring 16.

   The guide 41 is constituted by a bar in the form of a double trapezoid (end view), provided with feet 42 forming a bridge on the reset plate 13 and with flat faces which bear on similar faces cut on the flange 14 and the ring 16 and on which the feet are fixed by screws 43 and 44? The screw 44 also serves to fix in position, in a recess 45 of the guide 41, a block 46, on which one end of a spring 47 rests.

   A carriage 48, in the form of a block, and in which is formed a dovetail groove 49 open at both ends and containing a wedge 50, fixed in an adjustment manner by screws 50a (Figure 4), is mounted for be able to slide longitudinally on the die on the guide 41. The front end of the groove 49 is closed by a plate 51, fixed to the carriage 48 by screws 52. The spring 47 exerts a pressure against the plate 51 and the latter carries a guide rod 53 to maintain the spring in the alignment position. It can be seen that the spring 47 has a constant tendency to push the carriage 48 towards the front of the die.

   This forward movement of the carriage 48 resulting from the pressure of the spring 47, can be limited by a bolt 55 projecting into the groove 49 at the rear of the block 46 and fixed in an adjustable manner in a mortise 56. This bolt 55 cooperates with block 46 to limit forward movement of the carriage. The end position towards the front of the carriage, relative to the die, determines the length of the thread to be cut and by moving the stop 55 forward or backward on the carriage, it is possible to decrease or increase the length of the thread.

   The carriage can be actuated by the fact that the wafer 51 abuts against a fixed stop 58 (shown schematically in FIG. 2) on the front face of the die, and causes the die to advance with respect to the part to be treated. However, if the die is to remain stationary, a stop may be provided to move longitudinally with the part to cooperate with the plate 51 and in this way to move the carriage 48 rearwardly with respect to the die. In each case, the oscillating ring 17 can rotate under the action of the spring 33, to vary the diametrical cutting position of the combs 32 in order to obtain, using the die, a conical thread.

   In order to allow rotational adjustment of the cam relative to the carriage 48, the latter is preferably mounted on a rotary cam holder 61, in turn carried by the carriage. The oame holder is most clearly shown in Figures 1, 2 and 4. It has a flat plate and is

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 fixed on the carriage 48 by a pivot screw 62, on which it can turn. The cam holder 61 is also fixed on the carriage by a second screw 63, also screwed into the carriage 48.

   An arcuate mortise 64 is provided in the cam holder 61 to prevent the screw 63 from interfering with the pivoting movement of the cam holder around the pivot 62. To produce the pivoting of the cam holder, a preferably is employed. pair of adjustment screws 65, engaged in opposed threaded holes 66 of the cam holder 61 and cooperating with a stop pin 67, integral with the carriage 48. This pin 67 projects upwards through a mortise in an arc of a circle 68 , provided in the cam holder 61.

   From the above description it can be seen that by loosening the screws 62 and 63 and by rotating the screws 65, the cam holder 61 can oscillate in one direction or the other around the screw 62 forming the axis . In order to determine the adjustment position of the cam holder, two independent groups of marks are preferably used according to the invention. One group comprises a zero mark 71 on the cam holder 61 and a corresponding graduation 72 on the upper face of the carriage 48. The other group comprises a zero mark 73 on the pin 67 and a graduation 74 on the upper face of the holder. cam 61. The two graduations are intended for use with two different cams, as will be described later.

   A cam 75 is fixed by a pair of screws 76 on a descending wing 77 of the cam holder 61. As shown in Figures 1 and 4, clearances 78, 79 and 80 are provided between this descending wing 77 of the holder. -came 61 and the carriage 48, and the cam holder 61 is recessed at 81 and 82 to allow free oscillating movement of the cam holder on the carriage.

   The cam 75 is provided with a planar face 84 which cooperates with the curved face 85 of a tab or stop 86 fixed to the ring 17 by a screw 87. When the cam pirate 61 oscillates to vary the inclination of the cam, the screw 87 is preferably also loosened and the tab 86 is moved slightly so that its face is kept substantially parallel to the cam.

   The operation of the apparatus is as follows: Assuming that the carriage 48 is in its most advanced position, as determined by the stop 55, the ring 17 is maintained in its operating position against the action of the spring 33, by the cam 75, which is in contact with the tab 86. The die is then adjusted to the suitable diameter by the worm 24, to cause an oscillating movement of the head element on the extension, in the right direction. During this adjustment operation, the ring 17 cannot rotate, because the tab 86 is in contact with the cam and is kept fixed.

   The initial cutting diameter having been determined in the manner which has just been described, the part to be treated is introduced between the combs and the cutting of the thread is initiated.
As thread cutting progresses, the relative axial movement of the die and stopper 58, in contact with cam holder 61, causes carriage 48 and cam 75 to move back from the die. stop 86, against the action of spring 47. During this operation,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 the thrust of the spring 33 serves to maintain the stopper 86 in pontact with the ramp of the cam 75 and, therefore, this produces a controlled rotation of the oscillating ring 17 which, in turn, produces a progressive displacement of the combs towards the outside. In this way, the die is made capable of cutting a tapered thread.

   When the front edge of cam 75 reaches the position shown in Figures 3 and 4, further retraction of carriage 48 allows stopper 86 to exit cam-76, and the accelerated rotary motion of the oscillating ring 17, which results therefrom under the action of the spring 33, causes the comb holders 27 to pivot by an amplitude sufficient to disengage the combs 32 from the thread of the part. After removing this part, the operator turns the ring counterclockwise (figure 1) to a position in which the cam 75 can pass beyond the stop 86, and the spring 47, then compressed, automatically pushes the carriage 48 forward in the position determined by the bolt 55.

   The organs are then returned to the starting position for cutting the thread.

   It has been customary to provide dies for conical threads with a cam for cutting 18 mm by 300 mm or 9 mm by 300 mm cones, which are very common cones.

  It has been found that by suitably curving the face 85 of the stop 86, the taper error introduced into the relatively short thread lengths, generally cut by these dies, is negligible. However, since the cams are designed for maximum precision for a particular initial cutting diameter, large changes in diameter, such as those resulting from changing the diameter of the die focus relative to the die. to that for which the cam was designed, required new cams with a suitably compensated incline of the crawl. This was accelerated by rapid progress in establishing more accurate data for cones.

   The present invention completely eliminates the need for the use of a large number of cams with slightly different inclinations, all intended for a particular taper, but especially intended for a certain individual cutting diameter, because that it provides an adjustable device of conical size, which permits the use of a single cam for a particular cone, but arranged for use in the whole of the diametral zone of the die.

  On the other hand, it has been found that the new cone-cutting die, employing the new adjustable device for cutting canes, is capable of cutting tapered threads of any diameter in this area, the threads having taper details are well understood in existing standards. The characteristic of the setting will be presented most clearly by the description of an example of a threading operation.

   It is assumed that the die, during the previously described operation, was designed to produce a thread with a taper of 1 mm by 300 mm, on a workpiece with a diameter of 25 mm, and that it is desired Now cut a thread with the same taper, but on a part with a diameter of 38 mm. The diametral adjustment is effected by rotating the worm 24 in the manner previously described. Since the cam 75 does not exactly cut a tapered thread for the part with a larger diameter, it is adjusted as follows:

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

Screws 62 and 63 are loose and the cam holder
61 is rotated around the pivot 62 by a predetermined amplitude. 'It is then fixed in the new position by tightening the screws.

   This effectively results in a change in the inclination of the ramp of the cam 75. The exact adjustment is determined by observing the proper placement of the marks and the threading operation is then carried out as before. It is therefore possible to thus adjust the inclination of the ramp for a particular diameter whatever in the zone provided for the die, and in this way the use of a large number of cams provided for this purpose is avoided. ? On the other hand, the organs are graduated in two groups of marks, expressing the amplitude of rotation of the cam holder 61 in minutes of taper compensation for two particular cones, namely 18 mm and 9 mm, although a higher number can be used if desired, depending on the number of cams of different taper to be used.

   Accordingly, after determining the particular taper error for any initial diameter, compensation can be easily made by employing the appropriate set of marks as reference marks, depending upon which one employs on the die. 18 or 9 mm taper cam.

   In this regard, it should be remembered that these two particular cones constitute practically the only employees and def initally in use for the great majority of the parts to be treated, if the machine is particularly intended to be used with two cams for the process. 'Obtaining these cones, But when it comes to carving a special cone, it is evident that the marks can be drawn to correspond to that cone rather than to one of the two cones shown, and that the more than two different cams can be used, if desired.

   If it is desired to adjust the die to cut a thread of a different length, the stopper 55 is loosened and moved along the mortise 56 to the proper position, in the socket it is then tightened.

  Since this amounts to moving the cam 75 relative to the tab 86, the combs are moved either inward or outward, depending on the direction of adjustment of the stopper. The proper diametral setting must of course be reestablished by rotating the worm 24, in the manner previously described.

   In the foregoing description, the advantages resulting from the use of the new device for adjusting the taper, in combination with dies with pivoting comb holders to compensate for errors in taper originating from these dies when they undergo. a diameter adjustment. It is obvious that the degree of adjustment possible is sufficient to compensate for errors of taper resulting from slight errors of the cams, from the wear of the members of the dies, from the way of mounting this die, etc. An important advantage of the device according to the invention therefore resides in the fact that it is capable of compensating for errors of oonioité originating from numerous different causes.

   Of course, the new device for adjusting the taper is also extremely useful in its application to other dies provided with non-strictly oscillating comb holders. Consequently, whatever the advantages of the new device in its application to dies with pivoting comb holders, it is understood that this device is capable of compensating.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 However, the invention is not limited to the type with pivoting comb holders, but can be applied to many different types of dies.

   It emerges from the above description that all the objects of the invention have been achieved. On the other hand, it is possible to cut threads on an upturned cone by the simple reversal of the inclination of the ramp of the cam 75. Finally, the device can be arranged for cutting different cones, which differ reasonably from each other. others, without changing the cams - increasing the lateral play between the members 41 and 61 - the graduations shown in the drawing being considerably exaggerated.
