Description

Threading mechanism. The present invention relates to a threading mechanism of the category in which an inner or outer conical screw is cut into the workpiece by multiple threading elements to which radial movement is imparted during the threading action, so as to produce the taper and in which, at the end of the threading operation, these elements are quickly released from the part so that the mechanism can be easily removed.

For the purposes of the present description, there is shown a tap with retractable combs of the recoil type intended for internal threading. pipes or other tubular parts commonly used in industries manufacturing oil or steam piping equipment. However, the invention is also applicable to dies for the execution of external threads and, in the present description, the expressions thread mechanism and escalating comb tap are intended to encompass both of these types of thread. threading device.

In known threading mechanisms, the device for producing the taper of the thread comprises a large number (the cooperating parts sliding on each other and between which it is difficult and expensive to maintain the absence of play during the service life of the This was particularly the case with the operation of the trip cams and gauges which control the precision of the taper produced, and it was noticed that after a certain time the wear between these parts gave rise to irregularities of taper.

The importance of a high degree of precision in the operation of these mechanisms becomes apparent when one considers the fact that the current trend in industry in this regard. was accentuated by the recently established standards in the United States for the needs of military and naval artillery and aeronautics, and the creation of more efficient calibers and devices for the. checking the nets.

The object of the present invention is to remedy these defects; its object is a threading mechanism, characterized in that it comprises a body provided with elements tailing the threads, movable radially in both directions, a plunger device comprising relatively movable parts mounted in said body, one of these parts having an axially movable plunging head:

and connected to said elements cutting the threads to enter them during the threading operation, means for temporarily locking the plunger device and preventing it from slacking off relative to the body in order to retain the cutting elements in working positions, and means connected to the rela tively movable parts of the plunger device and arranged between these parts, for moving the part having the plunging head relative to the other part and entering the following cutting elements. a predetermined relationship with the progressive cutting action of said elements, in order to form a conical thread.

The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention.

The elongated cylindrical body 10 is provided, at its rear end, with an extension 11 intended to be connected to the vertical or horizontal shaft of a drill, a lathe or other driving machine. This tap body is. surrounded by a sleeve 12 sliding longitudinally and comprising, in the vicinity of its anterior end, a number of perforated lugs 13 directed radially. A ring 14 is supported in a rigid and adjustable manner at the front of the sleeve 12 by spacers 15 which terminate at the front with studs 16 screwed into the ring 14.

The rear threaded ends of these spacers pass through the perforated ears 13 and are: immobilized in an adjustable manner relative to. they by the nuts 17 tightened to block against the opposite faces of these ears.

The sliding sleeve is the essential control member of the comb retraction and erasing mechanism, and all that has just been set forth is typical of common practice in the art.

At the front end of the body 10, of which it constitutes an extension, is fixed the comb holder head 18, and that. demon table by means of several screws, as was' indicated in fig. 1 and, 2. This head carries combs 20, radially adjustable, including. the inclined inner ends have grooves 21 intended to cooperate with lan guettes 24 inclined in the same way, formed on the frustoconical head 23 of the front element 22 of the plunger, in order to exit and re-enter said combs.

The head 18 is drilled along its axis at 25, and in the outer end of the hole is fixed a ring 26 serving to guide the element \? 2 of the plunger.

The body 10 is drilled along its axis with a hole 27, with the front end of which the hole 25 drilled in the head 1.8 is in alignment. The other elements 28 and 29 of the plunger in several parts can slide integrally and individually in the bore 27.

The intermediate element 28 of the plunger is connected to the front element 22 by means of the adjustment rod 30, the front end of which 31 is screwed into the tapped part of the hole 32 drilled in the element 22 of the plunger. In the vicinity of its posterior end, this adjustment rod has, at a distance from each other,

two collars 33 and 34 between which fits the grooved wall of a sleeve 35 formed at the anterior end of the element 28 of the plunger. The rear face of the collar 34 is toothed in order to cooperate with the end den ture of a locking member 36 elastically. maintained in its locked position by the spring 37 housed in a cavity 38 bored in the element 28 of the plunger. This device for adjusting and locking the element 22 of the plunger is intended to predetermine the diametrical position of the combs with respect to the axis of the plunger (FIG. 2).

Considering now figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing, it will be noted that the element 28 of the plunger comprises a front end part which is short and cylindrical in shape 39 and a relatively long semi-cylindrical part 40 directed backwards and whose curved surface has the same radius as part 39 and extends over an arc less than 180 so as to thus form a flat inner surface 41 offset with respect to the axis of bore 27.

Likewise, the rear element 29 of the plunger has a cylindrical rear part 42 and a relatively long part 43 directed towards the front, the section and dimensions of which correspond to those of the part 40 of the element 28 of the plunger. and forming on the other side (the axis of the bore 27 a flat inner face 44 opposite to the face 41 of said part 40 of the element 28 of the plunger; the parts 40 and 43 overlap and form between them The free end of each part 40 and 43 of the plunger forms, longitudinally, a certain gap with the opposite end of the corresponding part 42 or 39 of the other element of the plunger.

In addition, part 42 of element 29 of the plunger has, at its rear end, an extreme cylindrical extension 45 of reduced diameter and the role of which will be explained below.

In the face 41 of the element 28 of the plunger, between the ends of this face, is cut a transverse groove 46 in which a block 47 can slide freely. One of the ends of the taper control lever 48 fits between the parts 40 and 43 in the axis called the plunger mechanism and is provided, on its opposite side faces, with articulation pins 49 and 50, the axes of which are relatively staggered. to each other in the longitudinal direction of the lever.

The stud 49 articulates in a cavity 51 cut in the slide 47, while the other stud 50 engages it in the same way in the cavity 53 of a bar 52 disposed perpendicular to the axis of the rod. plunger and in the cavity 44 'formed in the inner face 44 of the portion 43 of the posterior element 29 of the plunger. One (the ends of this bar 52 passes through a short longitudinal mortise 54 cut in one side of the body 10, while the other end of said bar passes through a relatively long mortise 55 cut in the opposite side of said body.

This mortise is also relatively wide, as can be seen in fig. 5, in order to allow the lever 48 to move relative to. the bar 52. The opposite ends of the bar 52 carry and slide on the bottom walls of diametrically opposed internal grooves 56 cut in the wall of the sleeve 7.2 and, when the plunger assembly is in the armed position, they abut against the flat shoulders 58 formed. ,, to the inner end of lugs 57 fixed in the wall of said sleeve.

The bar 52 therefore has the effect of limiting the forward movement of the sleeve 12 relative to the body 10, while said sleeve prevents the bar from moving transversely with respect to the plunger mechanism. This construction, in fact, constitutes a fixed articulated connection between the taper control lever 48 and the posterior element 29 said plunger, as well as an arti # .tilée connection, transversely movable between said lever and the element. 28 of the diver.

Between the ends of one of the grooves 56, the wall of the sleeve 12 has an opening 59 through the outer end of the lever 48; this opening widens at its center, as seen at 60, to receive -His cylindrical boss 62 formed at. one of the ends of a said support member 61. This support member has a generally rectangular shape, as seen in. 1a, fig. 7 and has at its center a cylindrical hole 63 drilled in the axis (boss bed 62. This hole and the boss are divided along their axis by a slot 64 in which the end of the lever 48 fits.

Preferably, the support is provided at its other end with a removable plate 65 for closing off the hole 63 and the slot 64, and this plate is held bare assembled in a rigid and removable manner with the body of the support, and it here in turn with the sleeve 12, by means of screws 66. Considering in particular FIGS. 1, 2 and 5, it will be noted that the outer end of the taper control bar 48 has an elongated rectangular mortise 67.

This mortise serves as a housing for a slide 68 for the articulation of said end of the lever, this slide having journals 69 aligned axially on its opposite faces and each housed in a cavity 71 of one of the two semi-members. cylindrical 70 mounted to slide in the bore 63 of the support 61.

In order to adjust the plunger mechanism, in order to gradually modify the taper of the thread, a graduated scale 72 (fig. 8) is engraved in one of the faces of the lever 48 at one of the lateral edges of the mortise 67. No far from the scale 72, a stop heel 73 protrudes into the mortise 67 and is intended to engage in any one of the notches 74 formed in the edges of the rectangular block 68. It will be noted that each of the edges of this rectangular block has only one notch and that these notches are located at an unequal distance from the edges of the perpendicular block.

As block 68 is shown in the drawing, one of its edges coincides with the zero of scale 72, which corresponds to a certain taper, for example 61 / o. By modifying the position of the block 68 in the mortise 67 and engaging the stop heel 73 in another chosen notch 74, the edge of the block is placed in front of another graduation of the scale in order to increase or decrease the taper. Obviously, if you want to make more precise settings, you can provide additional notches in the edges of the block.

This variation in taper results from the fact that the adjustment of the block 68 places the articulation journals 69 and the members 70 in various ways along the lever 48 relative to the articulation 49 between said lever and the element 28 of the plunger which, in turn, modifies the amplitude of the reentry movement of elements 28 and 22 of the relative plunger. item 29 as will be explained.

A powerful coil spring 75, housed in the hole 76 drilled in the extension 11 of the body, is screwed, by the closely spaced turns 77 which it presents at its anterior end, on a threaded stud projecting on the posterior part 45 of the diver's element: 29. As for the rear extreme close turns 78 of this same spring, they are screwed onto the external threads of a tubular nut 79 in the threaded part of which the screw 80 engages which holds it tightly against the seat 81 formed by the posterior end of hole 76.

The sole function of the spring 75 is to quickly and integrally withdraw the plunger mechanism after it has accomplished its recoil action and the tapping operation has been completed.

In order to keep the various parts of the plunger mechanism in the armed position as shown in fig. 1, at the start of the tapping operation, there is provided a locking device and a locking device which will be described with reference to FIGS. 3, 4 and 6 of the drawing. In the opposite sides of the low-cut posterior end 45 of the plunger element 29 are cut segmental grooves 82 connected at one of their ends by a circumferential groove 83 (Fig. 6).

In these grooves is embedded a substantially U-shaped locking member 84 which is elastically urged outwardly, towards a normal position in which its intermediate part projects beyond the periphery of the end of the plunger. 45, by a spring 85 housed in a cavity 86 of the plunger.

This locking member is intended to cooperate with a relatively fixed retaining member. In the present case, this retaining member is produced in the form of a metal ring 87 which has proved to have interesting practical advantages as regards the operation of the mechanism. This retaining ring is wide, and it fits into the rear end of the hole 27 drilled in the body 10. The outer diameter of the ring is such as to allow the angular adjustment of the latter relative to the hole, and said ring has, substantially halfway between its end edges, openings 88 chamfered at 89.

Against the edge of one of these openings carries the identically chamfered end 91 of a prisoner 90 screwed into a hole 92 threaded in one of the sides of the body 10, (so as to securely hold this prison in the chosen position, one of its ends bearing against the rear bottom wall of the hole 2 7. In this way, the other end edge of the retaining ring is placed to cooperate with L ' worm and rusting member 84 and relative to a flat 95 formed on the head 94 which internally forms a latch control pin 93.

This peg is movable transversely in the hole 96 drilled in the body 10, and: its interior end is perforated, as is. sees it at 97, in order to receive the head 94 of said ankle. This head of the ankle engages in a cavity 94 ', provided in the end of part 42 of the element 29 of the plunger, during the retraction movement of the latter (see FIG. 4). . The other end of the ankle .93 has a ramp 98 which must cooperate with a trigger rod embedded in the sleeve 12.

The sleeve 12 has in its wall, in alignment with the latch control pin 93, a longitudinal groove 99 intended to receive a release rod 100 having a T-section (see FIG. 5). On its interior side, this baguette has two ramps 1.01 and 102 with opposite slopes. The rod comprises a relatively thin end portion 103 extending the ramp 101 and whose position relative to the outer end of the ankle 93 is such that it does not actuate the latter. Surface 102 is at the other end of the bay.

In this way, by changing the position of the rod in the groove 99 end to end, it is made to cooperate at the desired time with the pin (the latch control 93 to produce long or short threads. the extension 103 provides the Locknuts 104 with sufficient reach to securely immobilize the tongue in one or the other of its positions in the groove 99.

In order to prevent the sleeve 12 from rotating relative to the body 10, so that it does not rub the ends of the bar 52, and also in order to keep the trigger bar: 100 exactly in line with the latch control pin 93, a manehon guide tongue 105 is firmly fixed in the longitudinal groove 106 cut in the periphery of the body 10. This tongue projects outwardly on the body and fits into the groove 107, milled in the sleeve 12 (fig. 6).

The tongue 105 has at its anterior end a series of teeth 108 forming a mesh crate and with which the teeth of a toothed sec tor 1.10 cut at the end of a reset lever 109 is intended to cooperate. This lever is articulated in an opening 111 of the manehon 12, on the axis 112 to. its two ends in said sleeve.

From the previous description of the assembly of the various members of the mechanism (the thread, it is easy to understand how the latter works. We will first refer to Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings, where we have shown the various organs in the relative position which they occupy after the multi-piece plunger has been cocked so as to protrude the combs so that they attack the part; at the instant when these combs enter. At the end of the tube or tube, the ring 1.1 comes into contact with the end of the tube or other fixed part. Therefore, as the tapping operation continues, the spacers 15 push back the sleeve 12 on body 10.

As the upper end of the taper control lever 48 is articulated on the fixed bar 52, the outer end of this lever also moves rearward, the articulation members 70 of this end of the sliding lever. . freely, in the bore 63. It can also be seen that the. articulated connection 49 between said lever and the element. \ 38 of the plunger folds back relative to it. to the articulated connection 50 between said lever and the fixed bar 52, because the slide 47 moves transversely in the groove 46.

Because the element 28 of the plunger is connected by the adjustment rod 30 to the element 22 of this same plunger, the relative angular movement between the pivots 49 and 50 moves these elements of the plunger integrally towards the rear with respect to the rear element 29. As a result, the head of the plunger 23 is pulled towards. the rear so as to retract the combs 20, in other words to impart to them an inward movement in synchronism with the production of the nets.

The threading process and the retrograde movement of the sleeve 12 continue until (depending on the setting of the rod 100 to cut the threads to a predetermined length), one of the ramps 101 or 102 of this rod bears on the oblique face 98 of the outer end of the pin 93 and pushes the latter towards the inside. As seen in fig. 3, this movement of the peg 93 inward pushes the locking member 84 inward on the tip 45 of the plunger against the res out 85, thereby releasing said worm member from the end. of the retaining ring 87.

At about the same time as the locking member 84 is triggered, the spring 75 contracts and integrally returns the three elements 22, 28 and 29 of the plunger to the rear, thus releasing the combs. part and making them take the position shown in fig. 2. This movement is limited by the contact of the end 45 of the element 29 of the plunger with the bottom of the bore 27 of the body 10.

By a comparison between Figs. 1 and: 2, it can be seen that during the retrograde movement of the whole of the plunger, while the sleeve 12 moves back, the outer end of the lever 48 pivots relative to the articulation members 70, while the latter slide. outwards into the hole 63, and that, doing so and at the same time as the tapping process continues, this lever passes from the oblique position relative to the axis of the plunger as seen in the figure. fig. 1 in a position closer to perpendicular to this axis or even sometimes exceeding it, as shown in FIG. 2.

This final position of the lever in question, at the end of the retraction process, is determined and controlled by the way in which the articulation slide 60 of said lever has been adjusted in order to obtain a desired taper and whose trigger rod 100 has been adjusted to achieve a desired length of thread.

For the retraction of the plunger mechanism, the end 45 of the element 29 of the latter, that which carries the locking member 84, is located inside the retaining ring 87, </ B > as seen in fig. 2 and 4, this end of the plunger being slightly long phis that the ring is wide so that it cannot be damaged at its front edge by the violent impact of the part 42 of the plunger on it.

During the retraction process, the ends of the bar 52 move rearwardly relative to the sleeve 12, in the grooves of the latter, one of the ends of this bar occupying :, relative to the extremity rear end of the groove 54 of the body 10, approximately the position seen in FIG. 2. It will also be noted that, as a result of the sliding of the sleeve 12, controlling this retraction process, the lugs 57 carried by said sleeve are now located behind the ends of the bar 52.

In order to return the members of the mechanism to their relative position shown in FIG. 1, the sleeve 12 is advanced over the body 10 of the tool, from the position shown in FIG. 2, by the action on the caliper either of a mechanism (not shown) which exerts pressure against the rear end of the sleeve, or of gravity if the tool is made to work vertically. This movement of the sleeve is obviously accompanied by a corresponding movement of the ring 14 and of the support 61, which brings back or recalls the lever 48 in the position according to FIG. 1.

This forward movement of the sleeve 12 is finally stopped by the meeting of the lugs 57 with the posterior edge of the bar 52, and at this instant the teeth 110 of the reset lever 109 are ready to engage with the rack 108 of the tab 105.

The movement, back of the sleeve 12 which did. moving back the plunger mechanism is now completely redone in reverse order and the parts are, ready for the final rearming process. This can be achieved in two ways, either by applying additional pressure against the rear end of the sleeve 12, or by bringing the lever 109 to the position according to FIG. 4 in the position according to FIG. 3 in relation to audit. muff. In either case, the sleeve, continuing to advance, causes the lugs 57 to exert pressure on the rear edge of the bar 52 which, henceforth, moves in one piece with the sleeve relative to . to body 10.

As the bar 52 is pinned to the posterior element 29 of the plunger and connected to. the element 28 of said by the lever 48 which participates in the movement of said sleeve, the three elements 29, 28 and 22 of the plunger move, now in a single block forward. This movement of the plunger is carried out against the resistance of the spring 75, which is elongated and stretched, at the same time as the members 22 are brought into the working position by the head 23 of the plunger.

This expander effect (the forward plunger mechanism continues until the posterior edge of the locking member 84 coincides with the anterior edge of the relatively fixed retaining ring 87. The spring 85 then intervenes to urge the locking member 84). worm member 84 outwardly and to place its intermediate portion in overlap with a portion of the edge of the retaining ring and in contact with the inner end of the latch control pin 93, which, it too is pushed outwards into its normal position by the spring 85 to the extent possible, the contact of the head 94 of this pin with the bottom of the perforated hole 97.

Thus, all the members of the mechanism are returned to their position according to FIGS. 1 and 3, ready for another tapping pass. A primary factor in achieving high precision in the production of taper threads is. Considerable simplification that the invention provides in the device governing the taper compared to prior tools of the same type. Thus, a relatively small number of very simply designed gold ganes are grouped into a space-saving assembly or all. clearance between relatively moving parts has been virtually eliminated.

Likewise, the sliding movements between relatively moving parts and fixed parts have been reduced to a minimum whereby the accuracy of the taper cannot be seriously affected by wear from friction and the erasing action occurs in any independence of the spring or other which resists elastically: to this action, which ensures the regularity of taper of the thread. As the plunger member 29 has only one locked position, the spring 75 is evenly tensioned regardless of the diameters and degrees of taper within reach of the tool.

These interesting operating qualities, the invention provides mainly thanks to the original plunger mechanism for spacing, eff = facement: and retraction that it provides and the means it uses to ensure its functional connection with the lever controlling the taper.

It will also be noted that in the present construction, recourse to wedges, eccentrics, cams or other parts has been avoided. with large surfaces subject to wear, parts that are not long in use. to produce taper defects or which require the addition of complicated adjustment devices.

The precise adjustment provided by the object according to the invention in the length of the thread, thanks to the locking device of the plunger and to the trigger rod: adjustable and reversible which is attached to it, also greatly adds to the practical interest of tools like this. Of particular note is the simple and inexpensive device of the latch stop ring 87. Thus, when a certain point on the end face of the ring shows signs of wear, the ring can be adjusted by. rotating it and one can: engage the end of the prisoner 90 in another of the openings 88, so that the ring has another part of its edge in contact with the locking member 84.

When this adjustment operation has been repeated as many times as there are openings 88 in the retaining ring, it is possible. reverse the position of the latter in the hole 27 of the body 10, so as to put the other section of the ring in place for adjustment with respect to the locking member 84. Therefore In fact, the duration of this ring is likely to extend beyond that of the tool itself. However, if its wear became excessive, it could easily be replaced at low cost.

This adjustable lock stopper undoubtedly returns the combs 20, each time the plunger mechanism is reset, exactly in the same position at the start of each tapping pass, the locking member -84 and the stop ring cooperating positively to prevent the retraction of the mechanism. As a result, after the trigger rod 100 has been suitably adjusted on the sleeve 12, as explained in the above, according to the predetermined length over which the thread should. to be carried out, each pass of the tool produces in the part a thread of a precise conicity and of a rigorously invariable length.
