 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

  "Variable speed power transmission mechanism".

   The present invention relates to a variable speed power transmission mechanism, in which the control is performed by means of one or more epicyclic gear trains, the speed ratio being changed by adjusting the gear (s). epicyclic, so that the parts of the train (or each train) can (or can) be caused to rotate as a whole.

   The invention particularly relates to gears, in which the speed changes take place automatically according to the combined effect of variations in and speed / torque.

   Examples of such forms of single or multiple gears

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 These epicyclic gears are described in British Patents Nos. 439,828 and 439,855. With particular reference to Figures 9 to. 11 of the drawings appended to the aforementioned first orevet and to Figures 7 to 9 of the destinations appended to the aforementioned second patent, automatic plate clutches are employed and arranged in such a manner that when increasing the speed sella operation of centrifugal weight. to put the clutch or clutches in such a way as to force the elements of the epicyclic gear or trains to rotate as a whole.

   The arrangement actually described in the aforementioned patents includes the use of centrifugal weight levers which pivot so as to come into contact with the flat face of a flange rotating at the same speed as the output member of the gear (s). epicyclic, In addition, when increasing the speed, the outward movement of the centrifugal levers rotates the bell cranks which directly engage the pressure plates and thus engage the clutches, Such an arrangement has a certain difficulty, from the construction point of view, given that when the centrifugal levers move apart, they change their effective radius, which generates an increase in mechanical advantage,

   so that it is difficult to ensure the engagement of the clutch by the action of the centrifugal levers. Furthermore, the clutch is adjusted only according to the main torque transmitted, since said clutch is incapable of effecting its own disengagement by itself.

   The object of the present invention is to allow the clutch to participate in its own disengagement, thanks to its own reaction torque. She has. furthermore, for the purpose of providing a simplified means by which a clutch

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   controlling an epicyclic gear train .. can be automatically caused to operate at the correct point, that is, under the conditions suitable for the change when reducing torque or increasing the speed of the output element of the gear train in question.

   According to the present invention, the clutch arranged to adjust the epicyclic gear train. or one or more of these trains, when a number of such trains are provided in series, is arranged to be started according to a relative rotation between the output element of the gear and the element driven by the gear, which in the case of a number of series trains can be the input element of the next train.

   This is done by interposing one or more centrifugal elements between the output element of the gear train and the element driven by the latter, in such a way that the centrifugal element (s) is or are subjected to the speed. of the output element of the train and to the reaction torque, of the driven element, the two elements which rotate relative to each other actuate cam elements which cooperate to cause axial movement of one two which results in the clutch being engaged or disengaged. In a suitable embodiment, the driven element of the gear train has a sleeve carrying a flange, near the edge of which a number of 'centrifugal elements rotate.

   These elements have short control or operating arms which engage in grooves and which engage with eyes formed in the element driven by the gear train, so that if the speed increases or if the torque reaction decreases or if both phenomena occur, the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 Centrifugal elements move outward and advance the driven element relative to the output element of the gear train. Conversely, if the speed decreases or if the reaction torque increases., Or if both phenomena occur simultaneously, the driven element moves backwards relative to the output element as the @@@@@@ @@@ gear ratio is lowered.

   Cam elements in the form of teeth or helical ridges form a single piece with said sleeve, and cooperating cam sutfaces are provided on a flange, facing inward, itself provided on the driven element.

  The last mentioned flange is the pressure plate or control or operating element of the clutch which is then engaged and puts the gear train out of service.

   In order that the present invention be clearly understood and easily carried out, one form of construction of the mechanism according to the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a vertical axial section; Figure 2 is an elevational view as it appears to an observer to the right of Figure 1, the lower half being a section along the line II-II of Figure 1, Figure 3 is a vertical section along line III-III of Figure 1; and
FIG. 4 is a perspective view showing the elements which control the clutch.

   In these drawings, an internally toothed ring 1 has a protrusion forming a sleeve 2, by virtue of which it can be connected to the motor which supplies the power source by a primary clutch not shown in the drawings.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

  The ring 1 is engaged with planetary gears 3 which are mounted so as to rotate on ball bearings 4 carried by studs 5 rigidly fixed to a carrier plate 6.

   The carrier plate 6 is provided with a projecting sleeve having a partit 7 with a cylindrical bearing and a partà. shoulder 8 at its outer end, said shoulder part comprising keyways which allow a driven plate 9 to be fixed to the shoulder part 8 by means of keys 10. The reaction organ II of the - epicyclic graining is mounted on the cylindrical gear 7 so that a sun gear 12 mounted on the bearing hub can mesh with the planetary gears 3.

  At the outer end of the hub of the member 11, a flange 13 has ratchet teeth 14 around its periphery, said teeth being engaged by a pawl 15 pivoting at 17 in the housing 16 so as to prevent rotation of the latch. 'reaction element in the opposite direction to that of clockwise, as seen at. FIG. 2. A recess made on the other side of the flange 13 forms a ring intended to carry the clutch plates 18 which are suitably toothed, as seen at 19, so that they can slide axially on the inner side of the ring.

   The driven plate 9 rigidly fixed on the shoulder part 8 of the carrier plate 6 is fixed by screws 19 'to a flanged clutch member 20. The clutch member 20 has a cylindrical projection 21, provided with teeth. 22 helical, as can be seen very clearly in figure 4, so that internal helical teeth which are on the hub 23 of a toothed ring 24, which is the driven element of the mechanism, can engage with those of the clutch element 20 to cause axial movement

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 relative when a relative angular displacement occurs between the elements 9 and 24.

   An inner clutch plate 25 is suitably mounted outside the hub 23 of the ring forming member 24, within which helical teeth 22 are provided.

   Opposite the clutch plate 25, and on the opposite side of the flange surface of the clutch member 20, there is a surface 26 which bears against the clutch and which is on the flange of the clutch. ring 24, so that the relative axial movement mentioned above closes or opens the space comprised between the flanges of the clutch element 20 and that of the ring 24 for engaging or disengaging the plates of 'clutch.

   The driven plate 9 carries a number of pivot bolts 27, placed at uniform intervals near its edge, and on each pin pivots a centrifugal element 28, provided with a short arm 29 which engages in a groove 30. formed in the edge of the ring 24. This ring is internally toothed to serve as an input element of a successive epicyclic gear and the like, or it is otherwise connected to the load. Therefore, the centrifugal force due to the eccentric mass of the elements 28, can cause an angular displacement between the ring 24 and the driven plate 9 when the load and speed conditions are suitable.

   The operation of the parts described depends only on the reaction torque of the gear, when the driven element 6 and the reaction element 11 have relatively different speeds during the period during which the conditions change from 1 to 3. Friction drive to the direct drive drive, when the gear ratio has actually been in operation, during the gear ratio increase. Obviously, the overthrow-

 ment of these conditions occurs when shifting to a lower gear when the conditions change from the drive

 ment by direct drive to training by pi: TiI-tsaa.: e: ll1a: friction.

   It will be noted that the helical tooth mechanism intended to produce the clutch pressure, as described above, is not controlled by a transmitted torque, but controls, by the effective reaction torque, the quantity of. transmitted torque that can flow through the system, while speed adjustment occurs between gear elements that have ceased to produce a drive ratio. Similarly, a check is made when the system changes from direct drive to drive by the clutch spring of the train.

   Torque continuity is thus achieved, while the proper ratio of torque to speed is maintained during all changes in transmission conditions, and all shocks are thus avoided during engagement of the parts. components.
