OF INVENTION PATENT the Company called: W.H. MINER INC. Improvements to the bumpers for. cars ae railways. Patent application in the United States of America on June 4, 1945 in favor of Mr. G.E. DATH.
This invention relates to improvements to buffers or tarons for cars or wagons ae railways.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient stopper mechanism for railway cars comprising a spring resistor and a friction shock absorber, successively actuated to exert a preliminary spring action for the purpose of 'absorb the lightest shocks, followed by a high frictional resistance which withstands more severe shocks, characterized in that the preliminary spring is enclosed in a buffer buffer and comes to rest on the shock absorber friction which is enclosed inside a plug in which the pad can fit by a sliding movement,
and in that the buffer of the stopper is able to move freely with respect to the shock absorber so as to be able to strike and actuate the latter when the resistance spring has been compressed to a determined extent.
Another object of the invention is to provide, in a stopper mechanism as indicated in the previous paragraph, a simple and effective device for anchoring the buffer in the plug and limiting its outward travel relative to the latter. , and consisting of a retainer extending transversely through the plug and the plug.
Other objects of the invention will emerge more clearly from the description and the claims below.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical-longitudinal sectional view of the improved stopper mechanism, approximately taken along line 1-1 of Figure 2. poses 23-23 of the inner face of the envelope 15 of the buffer at its inner end, these parts of greater thickness of the floor having flat vertical parts 24-24.
The purpose of the extra thickness of the walls at 23-23 is to increase the resistance of the walls of the envelope 15 at the point where the pin E passes through this envelope of the buffer. At its front end, the reduced diameter part 21 of the boot 17 is suitably reinforced. This part of the box has a smaller diameter than the reduced part 21, as indicated at 123, and is reinforced by longitudinal ribs 124 projecting laterally and coming (the one piece with the side wall of the part 123 and with transverse walls 25 and 26, respectively, closing the front end of the box 17 and connecting the parts 123of this box to the section of larger diameter of the reduced part 21.
The transverse wall 26 serves as a stop for the front end of the spring 20, as indicated above. The part 123 of the box is fore seen from a longitudinal groove 126 arranged in the transverse direction to receive the locking pin E. At its open rear end, the boot 17 is provided with three internal friction surfaces 27-27-27 which are arranged symmetrically around the central longitudinal axis of the mechanism. Friction surfaces 27-27-27 preferably have a U-shaped cross section and converge in direction. );.:; front of the mechanism.
At the rear of the friction surfaces 27-27-27, the open end of the box 17 is provided with three inwardly projecting side retainer ears 28-28-28 to limit the rear travel of the wedge 18 by : relative to the box and keep the first of these elements in the hooking position with the second.
The wedge 18 takes the form of a hollow member having a flat vertical rear bottom 29 which rests on the bottom 10 of the plug A. At its front end, the block 18 is provided with three V-shaped wedge faces. 30-30-30 converging to the longitudinal axis of the mechanism in the forward direction.
The friction shoes 19-19-19 surround the wedge and have on their outer sides V-shaped friction surfaces 31-31-31 which apply respectively to the V-shaped friction surfaces 27-27-27 of the box. On their inner face, each shoe 19 is provided with a wedge-forming face 32, V-shaped, which is applied to the corresponding V-shaped face 30 of the wedge 18.
The wedge 18 is anchored or hooked in the box by three radial ears 33-33-33 respectively hooking up to the ears 28-28-28 of the box between the adjacent friction shoes.
The spring resistor 20 takes the form of a strong coil spring disposed inside the box 17 and interposed between the shoes 19-19-19 and the front end of the box. its front and rear ends respectively applying to the transverse wall 26 of the box and the front ends of the shoes 19-19-19.
The spring resistor 3 is placed inside the sleeve 15 of the buffer B and is constituted by a single coil spring, the front and rear ends of which apply respectively to the internal face of the bottom 16 of the sleeve 15 and the front end of the friction box 17 of the shock absorber 0.

EMI4.1
The anchor E has the form of a barie with a rectangular cross-section. Jr :: oxil1ld.tiveÜlent ', provided with a head at one of the ends, shown at 34. This pin serves to anchor the plug B in the plug A and is introduced into diametrically opposed openings 35-35 formed in the side walls of the plug A, through diametrically opposed longitudinal elongated grooves 36-36 of the walls of the plug A.

the casing 13 of the tdmpon B and in the groove 126 formed in the friction box 17 of the shock absorber 0.
As shown, the openings 35-35 are preferably reinforced by prominent holes 37-37 * The removal of the ankle E is preferably prevented by a key 36 which is inserted into the shank of the ankle, at the end thereof where the head is located, and through the corresponding boss 37.
As shown more clearly in Figures 1 and 4, the grooves 30-36 of the buffer sleeve B are therefore longer than the groove 120 of the side 17 of the shock absorber.

Ea capacity of the friction shock absorber c is cons greater than that of the spring D, and therefore when the buffer is pushed in at the
EMI4.4
The spring D is compressed between the buffer of the friction shock absorber, which remains inert owing to its great resistance to friction. The spring D is therefore alone

compressed until the friction shock absorber is positively actuated by the pad after meeting the interior of the sleeve 15 of the pad with the shoulder 121 of the box 17.
The operation of the improved stopper mechanism xeprowed in Figures 1 to. 5 inclusive is done as follows: When moving the buffer B inward, as a result of the pressure exerted on it by some obstacle, such as the buffer buffer of an adjacent car, the buffer B is pushed back. inside the plug A, compressing the spring D against the shock absorber C, so as to absorb the lightest shocks to which the mechanism is subjected, if the buffer B is pushed further inside the plug A, the ex-

inner end of its casing 15 meets the shoulder 1t1uldire 121of the box li of the shock absorber by friction,
thus compressing it and absorbing more violent shocks. When the acting force decreases, the relaxation of the spring 20 of the shock absorber returns all the parts of the latter to the complete rest position, shown in Figures 1 and 4, the rear travel of the wedge 18 being limited by the meeting of the ears 33 which are formed there with the ears 28 of the box 17, while the expansion force of the spring D returns the buffer to the rest position shown in Figures 1 and, the forward stroke or vex the outside of the buffer with respect to the hole A being limited by the pin E.
EMI4.7
Referring now to the embodiment of the invention shown in Figures 6 to 11 inclusive, it will be noted that the construction is similar to that shown.

in Figures 1 to. 5, except that block 2 which serves to transmit the pressure is interposed between the spring against which the buffer is

In Figures 6 to 11 inclusive, the plug, buffer, friction shock absorber, spring resistor, and pin of the stopper mechanism and their corresponding parts are all designated by the same letters or reference numbers. used on Figures 1 to 5 inclusive.
EMI5.1
As shown in Figure 6, the block 1 intended to transmit the pressure is interposed between the internal end of the spring D and the front end of the box 17 of the shock absorber C, and is grooved longitudinally as it is indicated at 39, to receive the ankle E.
EMI5.2
The block F as is shown more clearly in: n Figures 10 and 11, comprises front and rear bottoms 40 and 41 in the form of plates connected by a strong central core relatively thick 42, and reinforcing ribs 43- 43 extend

laterally towards ltextérieur starting from the core 42 perpendicularly thereto, the groove 39 being formed in 1a, me of great thickness 42.
As previously stated, the friction shock absorber C shown in Figure 6 is shorter than that shown in Figures 1 to 5 inclusive and is closed at its front end by a vertical transverse bottom 44 on which applies the rear end of the block F, the bottom 44 also serving as a stop for the front end of the spring which
