<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"MACHINE FOR CRUSHING, ROLLING, DIVIDING AND COMBINING VECETAUX"
Certain plants in the form of very fine strands, such as alfa, rush, etc., are in common use for certain industrial applications. It is however necessary, beforehand, to crush these plants by rolling or hammering and to divide them by combing.
Depending on the treatment methods: currently known, these operations are carried out separately: the plants are first crushed and then combed. The combing itself is also done in two stages: one maintains the handful of plant fibers on one side and one combs the opposite side, after which, one turns this handful of fibers for some.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
combing the side previously maintained. This combing in two stages not only has the disadvantage of causing a waste of time, but also and above all that of causing the plants to be combed twice in the center of the handle.
In this central part, and because of this double combing, the fibers are considerably weakened and the quality of the product obtained is reduced.
The present invention overcomes these drawbacks and aims at a machine which makes it possible to successively obtain, in a single operation, the crushing and combing of plants over their entire length.
The other essential characteristics of the invention and the main advantages which they provide will emerge from the description which will be given with regard to the appended drawing which represents, diagrammatically and simply by way of example, one embodiment. of a machine according to the invention.
On this drawing :
Figure 1 is an elevational view of this machine.
Figure 2 is a partial plan view.
The machine according to the invention essentially comprises, in the embodiment shown in the drawing, a frame 1 supporting, at one of its ends, on the input side, a first pair of rolling rollers 2-2a rotating in direction. inverse and between which the plants are caught up and crushed by rolling. These two rollers are applied against each other by the action of springs; the lower roller 2 can, for this purpose, be mounted on a shaft, carried directly by the frame 1, while the upper roller 2a is carried by two levers 4 (one on each side of the machine) which can pivot around axes ± and subjected to the action of springs 6.
The machine then comprises two retaining rollers 7-7a pressed in a similar fashion against each other by means of
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
spells such as 8. The role of these rollers is to hold the plants firmly for the purpose which will appear later. To accentuate their holding action, these rollers have, on their periphery, longitudinal grooves which prevent any sliding of the plants, which, when leaving the laminator rollers 2-2a ,, are brought between these holding rollers 7-7a which rotate in the opposite direction. and at the same circumferential speed as rollers 2-2a.
Following these rollers 7-7a is arranged a first combing device consisting of two rotary combs 9-9a both constituted, in the example shown, by a tube 10-10a on which are fixed, at close intervals to deter - Undermined by intermediate washers, plates 11-lla cut into stars. These two combs are controlled in the opposite direction, at a circumferential speed greater than that of the rollers 2 and 7. During this rotational movement, the ends of the branches of each of the starplates of one of thepemgnes present between the branches of the plate of the other comb which is directly opposite it.
The shaft 12a of the upper comb 9a is mounted on a vertically adjustable carriage 13, which makes it possible to vary the degree of engagement of the teeth of the combs with each other.
On leaving the holding rollers 7-7a, the plants pass between these two rotary combs; because the teeth of these combs have a higher linear speed than that of rollers 7-7a, they move within the mass of plant fibers, firmly held by these Z-Za rollers, and provide a first combing.
A second identical combing device 14-14a, but comprising more closely spaced star plates 15-15a, and rotating at an even higher linear speed, ensures a finer second combing.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Finally, a third similar device 16-16a. with 17-17a star plates even narrower and higher eacored speed, provides an extremely fine third combing.
As long as the fibers are held between the rollers 7-7a, the three combing operations take place simultaneously. When the handful of fibers leaves, at its rear end, the rollers 7-7a, the combing continues to be carried out by the devices 14-14a and 16-16a, since the fibers are, at this time also, retained by the combs 9-9a rotating at a slower speed.
Finally, when the fibers escape these combs 9-9a, the combing by the combs 16-16a continues because the fibers are then held by the combs 14-14a rotating as fast as the combs 16-16a.
Thus, with the machine according to the invention, in a single operation, the plants are laminated and combed over their entire length, without weakened parts. It will also be noted that more or less than three sets of combs could be provided. Likewise, these combs, instead of being constituted, as described above, by star plates, could be produced in any other known way. However, the embodiment shown has the advantage of an economical and robust construction.
