<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Improvements to washing machines.
Washing machines are known in which a drum with perforated walls containing the laundry to be treated rotates around an axis in a tank where the soapy water and the rinsing water are successively poured so that the laundry to be treated The worm constantly moves and turns in the soap and then in the rinsing water.
It has now been found that the efficiency and the rapidity of washing and rinsing could be considerably increased if the laundry to be washed were alternately and constantly immersed, withdrawn and again dipped and so on, in the soap. and rinse water.
A first object of the present invention comprises an improvement in washing machines of the aforementioned type, thanks to which the laundry to be washed is, at each rotation of the perforated drum, soaked in the soap in the rinsing water and removed therefrom. To obtain this result, according to the present invention, the level of the liquid in the washing machine is adjusted.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
.pour au'il remains below the axis of rotation and the rotary drum is divided into two compartments, by a perforated partition fixed along a plane passing through the axis of rotation; during the rotation, these two compartments are successively bathed in the soap or the rinsing water and freed from them, so that the laundry is, for each turn of the crank, soaked in the lir.uide and removed from it.
Another improvement according to the invention consists in using, without requiring any transfer of the laundry, the same machine to spin the latter, after washing, in said drum. To this end, the washing machine is provided with a double control of the rotary movement of the drum, one at normal speed used during washing and rinsing, the second at increased speed for spinning the drum. ci, which is achieved by providing the control with a second motor shaft connected to the first by a speed multiplier. in order to better show the features which constitute the present invention, we will describe, by way of example, and with reference to the accompanying drawings, a preferred embodiment.
In these drawings, FIG. 1 is a longitudinal section of a washing machine according to the invention by a plane passing through the axis of rotation of the drum.
Fig. 2 is a cross section through the middle of the apparatus.
This consists of a frame 1 supporting the body or tank 2 of the washing machine which can be opened by lifting the cover, A pipe 4 allows the introduction of soap or rinsing water; a pipe 2 located in the lower part allows them to be evacuated. The cylindrical drum 6 carried by the axis 7 pivots in journals 8; its cover is made up of a perforated sheet 2, a part 10 of which, mounted on hinges, can be opened to give access to the interior of the drum.
On the axis 11 is placed a crank 12 to ensure the rotation

. of the drum. A second axis 13 arranged parallel to the axis 11 is connected to the latter by means of a toothed wheel 14, meshing with a pinion 15, wedged on the axis 11. The crank 12 thus gives the drum two rotational speeds. different, a normal speed when the crank is placed on axis 11, an accelerated speed when it is placed on axis 13.
According to the invention, in the rotary drum 6 is arranged in a diametral plane, a perforated partition 16 which separates the interior of said drum into two compartments 17 and 18.
The operation of the apparatus according to the invention is very simple. In each of the compartments 17 and 18 are loaded laundry to be washed, so that it can move easily. The cover 10 of the drum is closed, then the cover. 2. of the washer tank. With the valve of the exhaust manifold closed, soap is introduced through the inlet pipe 4 to the suitable level situated somewhat below the axis of rotation. The. the crank being placed on the axis 11, the drum is rotated at normal speed for the desired time. During this rotation, the laundry contained in each of the compartments 17 and 18 is successively and for each revolution of the drum, immersed in the soap and withdrawn therefrom, which ensures rapid washing and maximum efficiency.
When the washing is complete, the soap is replaced by rinsing water and the procedure is exactly as for washing.
Rinsing can be restarted with fresh water until the laundry is thoroughly clean. When the last rinsing water has been evacuated, the crank 11 is transferred to the axis 13 and by its operation, the drum 6 is given an accelerated speed which makes it work like a wringer and drives out the water which remained in the laundry.
Thus, thanks to the improvements which are the subject of the present invention, not only is the laundry washed and rinsed more quickly and more efficiently, but it is also
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
surplus wrung out in the same machine, without requiring any transfer. The washing machine according to the present invention thus ensures maximum efficiency, speed and manageability, at the same time as saving soap and with less wear of the treated laundry.
Of course, the invention is not limited solely to the embodiments described above, but also encompasses all other forms of implementation of its objects as claimed below.
