  Compresseur d'air.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

     Evidemment, les soupapes d'admission et de transfert, 16, 17, peuvent être actionnées mécaniquement au lieu d'être @

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  Air compressor.

  The object of the present invention is to create a simple form of an air compressor and, moreover, to obtain, in a very simple way, the equivalent of an expansion time longer than the compression temple. in an internal combustion engine, to provide a very simple means for supercharging an internal combustion engine, particularly a mechanical fuel injection engine, and to use the exhaust gases to supercharge an engine. such an engine, without using a turbo-compressor, and thus derive more energy from the combustion of air and fuel than is possible during engine time alone.

   The invention consists, in general, of an internal combustion engine, the exhaust gases of which, during their

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 evacuation of the engine, act directly on an air column in an exhaust duct so as to compress this air above atmospheric pressure and to discharge it into a container (for subsequent use in the engine ei this must be supercharged), the exhaust gases serving during their discharge from the duct, to recharge the duct with air.

   More particularly, the invention comprises, in combination with an internal combustion engine, means by which the exhaust gases act directly on a column of air in a partridge exhaust duct to compress this air further. above atmospheric pressure, means for discharging the air thus compressed into a container (for subsequent use in the engine if the latter is to be supercharged), means for discharging the exhaust gases from the duct after air has been forced back into the container, and means for recharging the duct with air while the exhaust gases are discharged.

   In the accompanying drawings:
Figures 1 to 4 schematically show various phases of the operation of the compressor in accordance with the invention; and Figure 5 shows a variant, on a slightly larger scale *
In the embodiment of Figures 1 to 4, which show the invention applied to the supercharging of an engine with mechanical fuel injection, an exhaust pipe 13 which communicates with the cylinder 14 of an engine. Mechanical injection of the fuel by an exhaust valve 15 thereof, is provided, at its end adjacent to this exhaust valve, with an intake valve 16, and further,

   (a transfer valve 17 which leads to a container 18, as well as a relief valve 19. The transfer valve 17 can advantageously be automatic and kept in its closed position by a spring, @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 this may also be the case with the intake valve 16.

   Assuming that there is an air column in the exhaust piping 13, and the relief valve 19 is closed, when the exhaust valve 15 of the engine opens (as shown in Figure 1 ), the exhaust gases rush into the exhaust pipe and compress the column of air contained therein until the pressure therein exceeds that of the receptacle 18; at this point the transfer valve 17 opens and compressed air is forced from the exhaust piping into the container for later use in the engine.

   When a uniform pressure has been reached, allowing the automatic closing of the transfer valve 17, as shown in figure 2, the relief valve 19 opens, and the passage along the exhaust pipe 13 of the exhaust gases and the remainder of the compressed air which has not been forced through the transfer valve 17, opens the inlet valve 16 (figure 3) while the discharge valve The exhaust 15 of the engine is terminated, and a new column of air is then sucked into the exhaust pipe 13 behind the exhaust gases which exit therefrom. finally, the relief valve 19 closes (Fig. 4) when the operating cycle has been completed and the valves are again in position for the next cycle to take place.

   In a variation of this arrangement, shown in Fig. 5, and particularly if only relatively low pressures or the like are required, the inlet valve 16 is replaced by a Venturi tube 20 placed at the end of it. a short exhaust pipe 21 which leads from the engine exhaust valve 15 to the main exhaust pipe 13 and which serves as an injector.

     Obviously, the intake and transfer valves, 16, 17, can be operated mechanically instead of being @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 automatic, and the invention is applicable to either two-stroke or four-stroke engines.In a two-stroke engine, the compressor can be actuated by the exhaust gases coming out of a lumen provided in the cylinder, near the cylinder. bottom dead center, and open and closed for pedestrians.

   Naturally, if the air compressor is operated by an internal combustion engine having no other work to do, the exhaust gases will be exhausted from the engine (i.e., the valve or light d. (the exhaust will open) when the throttle is still at a relatively high pressure, and the throttle expansion in the engine does not need to be any stronger than necessary to run the engine at a desired speed.
