<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Improvements to tap heads for pressurized fluid containers.
The present invention relates to heads intended to be mounted on pressurized fluid containers, such as, for example, those containing liquid carbonic acid, or another liquid under pressure of gas or vapor, with a view to various applications and in particular, but not exclusively, for fire fighting.
It is known that there are various types of such heads, some of which include a gate valve making it possible to open or close the container at will, and there is generally associated with them a dip tube in such a way that it is it is possible to obtain the outlet of the liquid and not of its vapor or pressurized gas) without having to invert the container at the time of use.
These containers have the drawback that their refilling requires special equipment as well as the intervention of specialists. When they are discharged, for example following the extinction of a fire, or even accidentally due to a wrong operation or a defect, they must therefore be returned to a specialized workshop which ensures the recharging.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The invention aims to avoid this drawback and to allow easy recharging here by the user himself, more particularly by means of carbonic acid in divided solid form (carbon dioxide snow or dry hail).
The head according to the invention is remarkable in that it comprises a removable plunger tube, in such a way that it is possible, after having removed it, to reload the receptacle, in particular by means of carbonic hail, then put the said tube back in place.
According to a further characteristic of the invention, the dip tube is formed by a tubular member closed at its two ends, but having in the vicinity of the latter side openings suitable for placing it in communication respectively with the interior of the container and with the tap inlet chamber.
Said tube is preferably terminated downwards by a point or the like by which it can be pressed without difficulty into the mass of carbonic acid after filling the container.
The head has an inlet chamber for the valve, so arranged that the placement of the dip tube isolates it from the atmosphere of the upper part of the container, whereby gas cannot escape. escape when the tap is opened (with the exception of possible leaks, of negligible importance).
Finally, a short dip tube is advantageously provided, forming a skirt integral with the head (or possibly the neck of the container) so as to automatically limit the filling level and thus ensure the correct dosage of the load without an auxiliary volume measurement operation. or weighing.
The appended drawing, given by way of example, will make it possible to better understand the invention, the characteristics that it has and the advantages that it is likely to provide.
The apparatus shown in general axial section comprises a metal bottle 1 suitable for containing carbonic acid

liquefied under pressure. This bottle is provided with a head comprising a dip tube and a valve.
The head comprises a body 2, screwed into the neck of the bottle in a sealed manner. The body 2 is drilled with an axial vertical bore and a horizontal bore intersecting the first.
The horizontal bore communicates through a valve 3 with a small space 4 into which opens an outlet nozzle 5 attached to the body 1 and at the end of which a device suitable for the use of the acid is fitted. expanded carbonic acid (fire extinguisher blunderbuss, for example). The valve 3 is carried by a rod 6 which, passing through a suitable stuffing-box 7, protrudes outside to receive the action of an operating lever 8, pivoted at 9, in the known manner. Said horizontal bore thus forms the inlet chamber of the valve constituted by the valve 3.
The entry of the horizontal bore of the body 2 is blocked by a screw 10 with seal 11.
The vertical bore of the body 2 receives a dip tube formed by the assembly of three parts, namely an upper sleeve 12, closed at its upper part by a hexagonal head 12a and provided with lateral holes 12b at the level of the bore. horizontal of body 2, said head screwing into the top of the vertical bore of said body 2 with the interposition of a seal 13; a tube 14 screwed against the bottom of the sleeve 12, said tube being perforated with holes 14a in the vicinity of its lower end; and a lower stopper 15 obstructing the bottom of the tube 14, this stopper having a conical shape tapered downwards, as shown.
It will be noted that the sleeve 12 fits without appreciable play in the vertical bore of the body 2.
Finally, the body 2 still carries a sort of tubular skirt 16 forming a short, large-diameter dip tube, sinking a certain amount into the bottle 1.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The operation is easy to understand:
If we assume that the bottle is normally charged, the carbonic acid liquefied, when the valve 3 is opened by the operation of the lever 8, the pressurized liquid flows through the holes 14a, the tube 14, the sleeve 12, the holes 12b and in the space 4 to arrive at the nozzle 5 and the user device in which it will generally turn into snow. At least in appreciable quantity, the gas cannot escape, the sleeve 12 joining almost tightly in the body 2.
When you want to reload the container, you unscrew the head 12a of the dip tube and remove the latter. Then, through the orifice thus discovered, carbonic acid is introduced in solid form, for example in the form of hail, up to a level which must necessarily be imposed by the skirt 16. The dip tube is then put back into place. forcing into the solid mass, which the tip of its end plug 15 makes easy. If, during this installation, one is hampered in any way by the gasification of the solid mass loaded in the bottle, it suffices to operate the lever 8 to decompress the latter *
Once the operation is complete, the carbonic acid is allowed to warm up gradually, turning into liquid.
The device is then ready to operate.
Thus, the head according to the invention allows easy refilling without requiring special equipment, or the unscrewing of the head from the bottle itself, an operation which is always difficult and delicate. This recharging can be carried out by the user himself without any difficulty and without even having to use a scale to dose the refill, the dosing being ensured automatically with sufficient precision by the skirt 16. It will be noted that the seal 13 under the head 12a of the dip tube can be widely dimensioned so that its tightness is easily obtained.
It will also be noted that the size of the load is automatically determined by the skirt 16 which limits the filling, without having to carry out a weighing or other operation, as with the known arrangements.

It goes without saying that the foregoing description has been given only by way of example and that it in no way limits the field of the invention, from which one would not depart by replacing the details. execution described by all other equivalents, nor by implementing only some of the characteristics described above. It also includes, as it goes without saying, not only the heads established in the manner exposed, but also the receptacles which contain them and in particular the liquid carbonic acid extinguishers which are provided with them.
