<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
EMI2.1

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
L'adjonction d'agents
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

Il est possible de varier la composition de ces agents et par là même les propriétés en dépendant, suivant l'application spéciale désirée, par un choix judicieux des différents agents de dispersion et produits d'addition. Par exemple on peut préparer à cet effet des agents pour l'immersion, l'aspersion sous forme d'émulsions ou de suspensions, principalement d'émulsions, de suspensions et de produits concentrés. Les agents cités se présentent en général sous forme de préparations liquides. On peut citer comme préparations solides lesagents en poudre, les agents dispersifs, etc. mais aussi des préparations savonneuses solides pouvant être utilisées sous forme de morceaux;;
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
quelconques.
L'action bac- tério-statique a.

<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
EMI11.1

<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>

"Method and agents for controlling mites"
Harmful mites (mites) are very common. Some varieties live as parasites on plants, animals or humans and cause considerable damage. Mites are distinguished from insects in part by their way of life, they also differ from them analogically and physiologically. It is therefore not surprising that insecticidal poisons have no or insufficient efficacy against mites. So, for example, 1 '[alpha]. [Alpha] -bis-
EMI1.1
(p-chloro-phenyl) -b.P.P-trichloroethane is known to be inactive against most dust mites. Likewise, the use of other natural or synthetic insecticides for the control of mites is unsuccessful.
It has been found that the amides of the aliphatic monocarboxylic acids of the formula

lend themselves admirably to the control of mites,
In this formula R1 represents a hydrogen atom or a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical which may contain alkoxylic groups, R2 a phenyl or [alpha] -phenyl-alkyl radical, the phenyl rings possibly being substituted by atoms halogen, alkyl and / or alkoxylic groups, and R3 a hydrogen atom or a low molecular weight aliphatic hydrocarbon radical.
Amides of this structure are partly known. They can be prepared, for example by reacting the chlorides of the corresponding aliphatic carboxylic acids with aromatic or araliphatic amines.

In most cases the limiting concentration of the activity of these substances is notably lower. After a very short time already the mites are paralyzed so that long before their death; they can no longer cause damage.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
As described later, these compounds have, in addition to their acaricidal action, bactericidal properties. Because they are practically odorless and harmless in the concentrations required, they are remarkably suitable for the preparation of agents for combating mites, both for the protection of plants and reserves and in the field of hygiene.
The present invention relates to a process for preparing a homogeneous and stable agent for combating mites with simultaneous disinfecting action, containing the active substance in the form of a non-molecular dispersion, in the form of an emulsion or a suspension. Suspension is understood not only as a solid-liquid dispersion but also as a solid-solid suspension.
The active compounds should not be applied as they are, but rather in diluted form, their active power being thus better developed and therefore more economical. On average, a concentration of 5-10% of the ready-to-use product has been shown to be sufficient. However, in some cases, for example with aqueous emulsions, it is possible to achieve the same results with lower concentrations. In the case of powder preparations, for example powdery agents, which cannot come into such intimate contact with mites, such as liquid preparations, higher concentrations, for example up to 80%, will be used.
Various inert, porous or powdered dispersing agents of an inorganic or organic nature, for example tricalcium phosphate, lime carbonate, are suitable solid carriers suitable for the preparation of powdered suspensions. in the form of ground and washed chalk or of ground limestone, kaolin, bowl, bentonite, talc, calcined magnesia, fossil flour, boric acid; can further use the cork powder, wood flour or other material of vegetable nature as fine powder. The active compounds are mixed with these supports, for example by grinding.
The addition of agents
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
wetting and / or dispersing agents make it possible to make these powdered preparations easily wettable with water so that stable suspensions are obtained which can be used as products for sprinkling, for example in plant protection.
Other forms of liquid application include emulsions or suspensions of the active substances in water or concentrates to prepare such emulsions which can be diluted immediately to the desired concentration instead of use. For this purpose, the active compound is mixed with an emulsifying or dispersing agent. By diluting such concentrated products with water, ready-to-use emulsions or suspensions are obtained. By obtaining the appropriate concentrations and mixing the active substance, the emulsifier and the water, clear and completely stable aqueous emulsions can be obtained.
Various hair-active substances comprising active compounds such as anions or cations or else non-ionogens are taken into account as emulsifying or dispersing agents. For example, mention may be made of natural or synthetic soaps, castor oil, sulphonated, sulphonates of fatty alcohols, sulphonated fats and esters of fatty acids, etc., as well as quaternary ammonium compounds of high molecular weight. and condensation products prepared from aliphatic or ara-liphatic compounds and ethylene oxide, for example the condensation product of stearic alcohol and ethylene oxide.
Semi-solid supports of different consistencies (cream, ointment, paste or wax) may be used for special purposes, to which the active substance will be added, depending on the case, with the aid of emulsifying agents. These semi-solid preparations are in the form of emulsions. As examples of semi-solid supports, mention may be made, inter alia, of soft soap (potassium stearate) or lanolin.
The active substance, on the other hand, can consist of one or more compounds of defined formula. It can also be applied in combination with other organic substances.

synthetic acaricide, insecticide, ovicide, fungicide or bactericide. Mention may be made, for example, of [alpha]. [Alpha] -bis- (chloro-phe-

nyl) -. . -trichloroethane, resp. -0-dichloroethane (DDT and DDD), dinitrocresol, nitrated naphthylamines, mercury compounds or inorganic bodies such as compounds of copper, sublimate, sulfur, etc. In this way combined preparations of extended action are obtained.
Other substances can be added to the applicable combinations already mentioned: adherent such as casein, salts of fatty acids, glue, resins, fats, degradation products of proteins; wetting agents, coloring agents, odorous substances and powder preparations of dust-binding agents, etc.
It is possible to vary the composition of these agents and hence the properties depending, according to the special application desired, by a judicious choice of the different dispersing agents and adducts. For example, agents for immersion and sprinkling can be prepared for this purpose in the form of emulsions or suspensions, mainly emulsions, suspensions and concentrated products. The agents mentioned are generally in the form of liquid preparations. As solid preparations, mention may be made of powdered agents, dispersing agents, etc. but also solid soapy preparations which can be used in the form of pieces ;;
The agents used to control mites are used according to the usual application methods.
Mites or materials to be treated or preserved from attack by mites, for example plants, roots, tubers, drugs, textiles, packaging materials, cereals, dried fruits, food and fodder reserves, seeds , wood, leather, skins, paper, furs, hair, feathers, / of all kinds, wallpapers, walls, floors can be treated with the active substance or with the agents described above, either by spraying, dusting, sprinkling, wetting, friction, impregnation or other suitable methods @

any.
The active compounds, as mentioned above, have a strong bactericidal action or strongly slow down the development of various infectious microbes, such as, for example, streptococci and staphylococci. The following results were obtained using staphylococcus aureus, streptococci, and diphtheria bacilli as tests. The bacteriostatic action a. was measured according to a modified plate method according to Fleming:

The agents prepared according to the present invention can thus be used as disinfecting agents wherever a disinfecting action is necessary or desirable. It will thus be possible to disinfect with them, for example linen, clothes, utensils of common use, living quarters, medical instruments and others.
Agents containing the defined active substance can also be used to disinfect, clean, wash the warm-blooded animal attacked by mites. For this purpose, suitable special carrier substances will be selected, for example as semi-solid carrier substances, lanolin and the like.
For the preparation of aqueous solutions or emulsions, mainly soaps will be employed as emulsifying agents; in addition to sulfonated oils, fatty acid esters and sulfonated fatty alcohols, aromatic and hydroaromatic sulfonic acids, alkylated in the nucleus,

high molecular weight quaternary ammonium compounds high molecular weight ether carboxylic acids, for example alkoxyacetic acids, as well as nonionogenic emulsifying agents, such as the condensation products of fatty alcohols and ethylene oxide. Esters of phosphoric acid are also suitable emulsifying agents.
However, ointment consistency emulsions can also be prepared using, for example, stearic acid, fatty acid salts and water. For the preparation of ointments free from fat, cellulose ethers or other gelatinous substances of animal, vegetable or synthetic origin and water or also inorganic substances, such as salts of organic matter, will be used as basic products. alumina hydroxide. The active substance will be added to these different bodies, depending on the case with the aid of emulsifying agents.
The preparations obtained by the addition of odorous substances can be perfumed, if necessary. Talc, starch, lactose and the like are good powdered carrier substances with good adhesion.
The bactericidal action can be increased by the addition of other substances such as for example phenols: p-chloro-m-cresol, o-butyl-p-chloro-phenol, o-benzyl-p-chloro -phenol, chloroxylenol, cyclohexyl-phenol, hydroxy-diphenyl and the like. The active substances can also be combined with many other substances exhibiting disinfectant and fungicidal properties, for example with quaternary ammonium compounds such as dodecyl-benzyl-trimethyl-ammonium methosulfate, hydroxy derivatives. - quinoline, preparations of colloidal silver, thio-cyanic acid and others. In some cases the adjuvants employed, for example wetting agents, may show a bactericidal action and thus increase the disinfecting action of these agents.
Foaming agents are particularly suitable for this purpose, such as, for example, ordinary or synthetic soaps, saponins and the like.

Different forms of preparation of the agents and their use are described in the following examples: this enumeration does not limit the scope of the invention. The parts mentioned are always understood by weight.
Example 1
5 parts of N-ethyl-propiono-m-toluidide (Eb. 143-146) are ground with 92 parts of talc in a ball mill, then 2 parts of olein are added, stirred and finally mixed with 1 part. of slaked lime. The powder thus prepared is easily pulverizable and has good adhesion. It can be used to sprinkle rooms and objects or for plant protection.
Example 2
15 parts of N-methyl-butyranilide (Eb.13 130-134) are mixed with 22.3 parts of kaolin, 4 parts of sodium salt of the acid
EMI11.1
dibutyl-naphthalene-sulfonic acid, 4 parts of casein and 4.7 parts of soda and grind the whole. Then 100 parts of finely ground chalk are added. The powder thus prepared gives a suspension of satisfactory stability in water and can be used for the sprinkling of premises and objects infested by mites as well as for plant protection.
Instead of 15 parts of N-methyl-hutyranilide, 5 parts of N-methyl-butyranilide and 10 parts of DDT can be used.
EMI11.2
(o (.oC-bis- (chloro-phenyl) -r.3.-trichloroethane) or 10 parts of
N-methyl-butyranilide and 5 parts DDT.
Example 3
80 parts of N-methyl-n-valeriananilide (Eb.13140-142) are intimately mixed with 20 parts of talc. This concentrated preparation can be used without further in powder form, for mite control and for disinfection. However, on dilution any of the desired concentrations can be formed.

Such powders, which can also be prepared on other bases, lend themselves by powdering human or animal skin to the control of mites. Powdered preparations, for example based on powdered starch, can also be used for mite control in warehouses by mixing with cereals, for example one of these agents. If necessary, the adhesion can be improved by adding suitable substances, for example 4% of a liquid fatty acid.
Example 4
By mixing, while stirring, 30 parts of N-ethyl-diethylacetanilide (Eb. 13140-143) with 70 parts of potassium soap, a homogeneous paste is obtained. By diluting this with water, an emulsion is obtained which has anti-mite and disinfectant properties and which can be used as washing water.
Example 5
By mixing while stirring 7 parts of N-ethyl-diethyl-ketanilide with 93 parts of alcoholic soap solution, a clear solution is obtained. More concentrated solutions can be prepared which turn into emulsions upon dilution with water.
Instead of 7 parts of N-ethyl-diethylacetanilide, it is also possible to use 5 parts of N-ethyl-diethylacetanilide and 2 parts of chloro-xylenol. An emulsion is thus obtained which is particularly suitable for disinfection as washing water.
Example 6
A mixture of 8 parts of paraffin, 15 parts of stearic acid, 5 parts of lanolin and 2 parts of wax is heated to 80. To this are added, while stirring at this temperature, 3 parts of glycerin, 1 part of triethanol-amine, 58.5 parts of water previously heated to 80 and 0.5 part of concentrated ammonia.
10 parts of N-ethyl-isovaleriano-o-toluidide are mixed in this ointment base and thus obtain a homogeneous cream having a

great anti-mite and disinfectant action which is particularly suitable for. treatment of skin affected by mites.
Example 7
3 parts of methylated cellulose are allowed to swell in 87 parts of hot water and the resulting mass is intimately mixed with 10 parts of N-methyl-n-valeriananilide (Eb.13140-143). This results in a grease-free acaricidal ointment. Instead of methylated cellulose, other analogous materials such as tragacanth, gelatin or alginates can be used.
Example 8
10 parts of N-ethyl-propiono-o-toluidide are mixed with 15 parts of a sulfonated fatty acid ester. A clear base mixture is obtained which, on dilution with water, gives clear -prou o-o-tolu emulsions with a content of 1%, 5% and 10% of N-ethyl-propiono-toluidide.
The amide and the sulfonated fatty acid ester can also be used in other ratios: with 30 parts of amide and 70 parts of fatty acid ester a clear base mixture is obtained. By diluting it with water, a clear emulsion is obtained when the concentration of the active substance is 1% and 10%, milky when the concentration of the active substance is 5%. By using 80 parts of amide and 20 parts of sulfonated fatty acid ester, on the other hand, after dilution in water at concentrations of 1%, 5% and 10%, milky emulsions are obtained.
These emulsions can be advantageously used for various purposes. They lend themselves to the sprinkling of premises infested or threatened by mites. However, it is also possible to spray objects of all kinds affected by mites or to protect against attack by mites with these emulsions or to impregnate these objects by immersing them in these emulsions. Cloth or paper bags and other packing materials, impregnated with emulsions, are used to keep food and other supplies safe from mites. The emulsions can be used in a similar way for the defense of plants.
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
Man and animal affected by the mites can likewise be treated with such an emulsion by wetting or rubbing the affected part. It is best to treat small animals with a bath of this emulsion.
Example 9
14 parts of an emulsifying agent active as a cation (Gemex brand), 490 parts of N-methyl-isobutyro-p-toluidide (Eb. 13133-136) and 496 parts of alcohol give a clear solution, which, on diluting tion in water at 1%, 5% or 10% amide turns into a milky emulsion.
It is also possible to use instead of the substances mentioned in the examples other compounds of the group defined above, without counting those which are mentioned in the introduction to the description. For example, the following compounds are mentioned:
