<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
Comme l'obturateur de vanne 8 est fabriqué en caout- chouc, il trouve un emploi particulier pour le contrôle de liquides sableux ou autres @ui peuvent avoir une action abra- sive ou corrosive sur le métal ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Improvements to valves for fluid control.
This invention relates to valves or valves in which the shutter is made of rubber or similar elastic material.
The object of the invention, in a valve, is the manufacture of the plug of rubber or similar elastic material and the use of an elastic extension of the plug to enclose the working parts, of the valve and of the like. thus eliminating the need for a cable gland. a further object of the invention is the use of a column of separate rings for preventing the elastic extension from moving inward and thus maintaining a pocket above the obturator. when the valve is closed. another object is to increase the passage section in the valve by making it larger in width than in height and by using an elliptical shutter of corresponding shape.

EMI2.4
Referring to Figs - and 2, the cylindrical shutter 5 of rubber or other elastic semi-rigid material, and hereafter referred to as "rubber, is: 1lO'üé. ¯ \ ü - 'yard of a smaller cylinder u forming the end of -La 7, i: e of' \ unlle 4 :. l) 'opening veri,; t.cal in valve body 1 is bored to accept the shutter 5 as a sliding member inside.
The walls 7 of the shutter 5 go upwards to form a hollow cylinder b terminating at the top with an outer flange 9 serving to form a seal when the cover 10 carrying the nut it for the valve stem 4 is fixed in square .
The valve stem 4 is threaded to engage with

bind 13 covering the base of the hollow elastic cylinder b, and
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
thereby covering a substantial part of the upper section of the rubber shutter 5. As already described, the hollow elastic cylinder extends upward.
The small cylinder 6 forming the core of the rubber plug 5 is advantageously formed by a cylindrical hole 14 through which the rubber of the plug is molded so as to firmly anchor the cylinder 6 in the plug.
In the cylinder 8 is freely placed a column of rigid rings 15. These rings freely surround the nut II and are in contact with the walls of the cylinder 8.
If desired, annular grooves (not shown) can be molded into the walls of cylinder b to hold these rings 15.
In action, and to close the valve, the nut 11 is rotated by means of the handwheel 12. The valve stem 5 is thus lowered by pushing down the shutter 5, while at the same time the elastic cylinder 8 extends sufficiently to allow the shutter 5 to enter the valve passage 16 and close it completely. The rings 15 prevent the walls of the elastic cylinder 8 from collapsing against the nut II and the valve stem 4, and thus prevent the outer walls of the cylinder 8 from moving too far away from the walls of the opening 3. The progressive pressure exerted by the valve stem 4 compresses the elastic plug 5 so that it inflates to fill and seal it. passage 16 as shown in figure 3.
The rings 15 in the column separate along the length of the extended elastic cylinder 8, thus keeping the space around the nut II and the rod 4 open.
This space may contain a suitable lubricant and be sealed by a suitable washer inserted between the nut 11 and
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the skin 17 of the valve stem. 10.
One will notice that the return of the shutter 5 in its housing, when opening the valve; will be helped by the reestablishment of the extended elastic hollow cylinder
The lower edge 18 of the shutter 5 is suitably shaped to match the area 19 of the passage 16 through the valve; which one maybe, if necessary? dug in. 20 as indicated in dotted lines to force a corresponding depression in this area to receive the shutter.
To provide as much as an achievable reduction in vertical valve movement, especially in large valves, the passage 16 in the valve may be slightly elliptical in shape connected to the normal bore 20 in the piping in which the valve is installed. placed; as shown in fig. 4.
This will provide a large opening section 16 with minimum valve lift 5. Note that when this valve is closed the fluid pressure tends to apply the valve more strongly to its seat and, if a little fluid escapes around the shutter 5 towards the walls of the elastic cylinder 8, it cannot reach the nut 11 and the valve stem 4; and it will be expelled from the space surrounding this cylinder when the valve is open or the pressure removed, it is therefore not necessary to place a stuffing box around the valve stem 4.
As the valve plug 8 is made of rubber, it finds particular use for the control of sandy or other liquids which may have an abrasive or corrosive action on the metal;
any grain of sand or other irregularity on the surface of the passage covered by the shutter 5 penetrates under pressure into the rubber, and thus any leakage due to the presence of the foreign body is eliminated.
