 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  "Process for obtaining stereoscopic images and device for implementing this process".

   The present invention relates to a process for obtaining stereoscopic images, in particular intended for relief cinematography, using an apparatus for projecting the images of a stereoscopic film.

   It aims to give the effect of relief to the spectators of a cinema projection room by using the principle of geometric sorting of images.

   To this end, the image of the aforesaid stereoscopic film is projected onto a screen made up of surfaces, one of which subdivides the image into substantially equivalent reflecting areas, of small dimension and of constant luminosity, another surface being a grid consisting of translucent and opaque areas, these two surfaces are arranged substantially parallel to one another by leaving a layer of air between them, and the protection device is provided with at least one means for selecting the stereoscopic images

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

In an advantageous embodiment of the object of the invention, the aforesaid grid is placed in such a way that it first receives the projection of the film.

   The present invention also relates to a device comprising a screen and a projection apparatus provided with means for selecting stereoscopic images. described described
To obtain the effect of relief by the process / above, the aforesaid screen is formed of surfaces, one being a grid, the other being constituted by an assembly of reflective areas of small size and brightness. constant, the above surfaces being separated by a layer of air.

   In another embodiment, the said grid is formed of a lattice provided with a support means, the meshes of the grid being of variable size.

   In an advantageous embodiment, the reflecting areas above are formed by bodies presenting '. on at least part of their volume, a substantially spherical surface, said bodies being fixed on a support.

   Other details and features of the invention will emerge from the description of a process for obtaining stereoscopic images and of an apparatus using this process, given below by way of non-limiting example and with reference to the accompanying drawings.

   Fig.1 is a perspective view of the screen.

   Fig.2 is a cross section of the screen along the line II-II of figl.

   Fig.4 is a detail view of the reflective layer of the screen.

   Fig. 3 shows the screen grid in detail,
Fig.5 is a section along the line IV-IV of Fig.4, shown on a larger scale.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   Fig. 6 is a variant of Fig.4.

   Fig. 7 is a view of the screen hiding the lens of the projection device.

   Fig. $ Is a partial and schematic view of a stereoscopic film.

   In the various figures, the same reference notations designate identical elements.

   The screen on which the stereoscopic images will be projected is made up of two layers placed vertically, just like in an ordinary screen.

   The first layer, that which is seen by the spectators of the room, consists of a grid 1, which is mounted on a glass plate 2 to ensure its rigidity.

   The voids 3 of the grid 1 are preferably determined by a photographic process. To do this, we project onto the aforementioned first layer all the points of the room corresponding to the location of a spectator. We will thus have an image made of black dots, similar to that obtained by the halftone process.

   Naturally, for most projection rooms, these images will be very similar, and an optimum drawing of the projection of these points can be chosen in order to be able to use it in all practical cases. It has been observed that, for several rooms of various sizes, only the edges of the screens differ, the central parts are practically the same.

   The screen will be pierced at the location of these black dots and a grid will be obtained, made up of translucent and opaque areas.

   It will be fixed on the glass plate 2 by means known per se. Any other transparent and resistant material is also suitable.

   An air space 4 separates the first layer from the second layer of the screen. The second layer consists of an over-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 face capable of returning the images of the projection room which penetrate through the holes 5 of the grid 1.

   This surface is produced by fixing, for example, on a support 6, a multitude of small spheres 7, for example steel rolling balls. We can obviously obtain the same result by taking half-spheres. One could also use small magnifying glasses 8 of the "STANHOPE" type, fixed on an opaque support.

   The inner edges of the orifices 5 could advantageously be cut in a double bevel, so as to increase the number of incident rays of the room and of the rays reflected by the surfaces of the spheres 7.

   The grid could also be produced by another means by tracing directly on a transparent support, for example, a glass plate similar to the plate 2, a very fine grid of opaque lines. The spacing of the lines would be of the order of a millimeter and will vary as soon as one approaches the border areas of the screen.

   The stereoscopic film is produced by taking successively right and left images of the same object, these images being, when taking pictures, separated by the distance commonly used in stereoscopy, that is to say approximately 7 cm.

   The images of the film will be arranged in such a way that, during the course of the latter, a right image alternates with a left image.

   A transparent screen 9 will be placed on the objective of the projection apparatus. This screen 9 carries a series of opaque lines 13. The screen 9 performs during the projection of the images of the film 10 the selection which has the effect of bringing in the bright parts of this screen, sometimes a left image 11, sometimes a right image 12 of this screen, and the screen formed by the grid 1 and the spheres 7 -or-the magnifying glasses 8 materializing the sorting, on. will only see from the room the raised image of the projected film.

   The opaque lines 13 of the screen 9 will be arranged either by

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

      aligning with the direction of advance of the stereoscopic film, that is to say normally to this direction.

   It should be understood that the invention is in no way limited to the embodiment described above, and that many modifications can be made to it, in particular as regards the form, the constitution, the number and the the arrangement of the elements involved in its realization, without departing from the scope of the present patent application, provided that these changes are compatible with the spirit of the claims set out below,
