<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Further development of valves for internal combustion engines and their manufacture "
It is well known that the tendency towards strong engine compressions leads to the use of good quality valves, in particular steels with high physico-chemical resistance when hot, to constitute the valve heads. The parallel trend towards rich gasolines, containing lead-tetra-ethyl, leads to reinforce the corrosion resistance on the dangerous zones of the heads; the salts of plo.nb resulting from
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
combustion actually attack the steel at the most vulnerable points and pitting occurs. flakes, blowtorches and soon a grill.
The dangerous areas of the heads are the hottest areas, that is to say, for a given operating speed, the seat and its neighboring parts, which are licked by the strong current of the exhaust gases. If the speed is therefore high and ethyl gasolines are used, it is useful, even for steel valve heads weighing at high temperatures, to reinforce this danger zone by a special coating of a chemical alloy. inert to hot corrosion.
The present invention relates to a process for manufacturing such coated valves. According to this process, one starts with a blank consisting of a cylindrical piece extended by a tail, said piece being intended to form the head after crushing by hot forging; on this slab, a ring of resistant alloy 3, corrosion-resistant is applied, before forging, then the valve head is shaped by forging, which has the effect of intimately and indissolubly encrustation of said alloy in the constituent metal of the valve.
This process can be advantageously combined with the process for manufacturing co, nposite valves described in the patent application itself filed by the applicant in Belgium today for: "Process for manufacturing valves for internal combustion engines", the cylindrical slug and the tail being then constituted by two pieces of different metals, the forging of which produces an intimate bond.
The reported alloy ring is preferably inserted into a groove formed or machined around the billet, which allows its location to be determined with precision, previously calculated according to the flow of the metal and the traces of the dies.
It can be applied by any suitable means, for example in the form of a solid washer or a wire which is simply crimped in the groove, or in the liquid state by fusion.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
drop by drop under a torch, which causes a preliminary weld before forging.
Whatever its mode of application, this ring moves, deforms and compresses during forging; A differential slip occurs along the contact surfaces of the crystals of the two contiguous metals which interpenetrate giving an extremely strong weld by molecular migration.
It is particularly advantageous to use as the added alloy, the alloy known under the name of Brightray alloy and composed of 80% pure nickel and 20% pure chromium, or any other suitable alloy.
The advantages of the process according to the invention are considerable: internal cohesion of the coating, solidity of the assembly, safety of the process, economy of filler metal. The solidity of the assembly is particularly marked when the head is made of austenitic steel, due to the fact that the forging contact takes place between two stainless surfaces, therefore pure and free of slag. The filler metal can be metered exactly without the occurrence of unnecessary thickness which then has to be removed by machining.
The description which follows, with reference to the appended drawing given by way of non-limiting example, will make it clear how the invention can be put into practice.
Figures 1 to 3 show in elevation three phases of the process.
FIG. 4 is an axial section corresponding to FIG. 3 in the case of a composite valve.
We start, in a known manner, with a cylindrical piece 1 extended by a tail 2 (figure 1), then we apply around this piece (figure 2), at the place which corresponds to the zone to be protected on the valve completed, a protective alloy wire, then the whole is subjected to hot forging in a press,

o.e so as to conform the head 4: of the valve, with its tail 5.
During this operation, the ally thread is compressed, shaped and encrusted to Corsage a protective covering 6 to
1 seat location.
FIG. 4 shows the composite blank at .ne, only in FIG. 2, in the case where, according to the aforementioned prior patent application, the shank 2 is fitted by embedding in the slug 1 which is made of a ferrous alloy. different, preferably stainless. The forging then simultaneously has the effect of embedding the lining and of securing inti, ne, vent the, head of the tail.
It goes without saying that, without departing from the scope of the invention, it will be possible to make '.Bonifications to the òr: execution fies which have just been described.
