 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

   Selon une autre donnée de l'invention, le couvercle pour bocaux, flaoons, etc.,. comprend une partie supérieure faite en un corps mince et flexible tel que du papier ou tout autre corps analogue, et une couronne de renfort relativement rigide, en carton ou autre, et sur laquelle le papier est fixé par une por- tion pliée et gaufrée s'étendant tout contre le coté extérieur de la couronne, vers le bas, et, d'autre part, vers le haut, à   l'intérieur de cette couronne et contre elle ; portion   s'étend,d'autre part, vers l'intérieur à partir de la couronne, au contact de la surface intérieure de la partie supérieure du couvercle;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

  "Improvements to the lids of jars, bottles and other containers"
The present invention relates to the lids of jars, flasks and other similar containers comprising an upper part forming the container and a skirt engaging around the rim of the opening thereof to hold the lid in position.

   According to the invention, the cover (as will be described) consists of a sheet made of a thin flexible body and a skirt ring made of a relatively stiffer body; the sheet forming the top or top of the cover is partly folded and embossed downwards, on the outside of the crown and an extension thereof is folded and embossed upwards and on the inside thereof; another extension is folded and embossed inward along the top and under it.

   This last extension forms a reinforcing crown, the maximum dimension of which in transverse section intersects at right angles the first pro-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   lengthwise, so that this reinforcing ring consolidates this extension against any unfolding inwards' moving away from the ring already mentioned in a more rigid material.

   According to another datum of the invention, the lid for jars, flaoons, etc.,. comprises an upper part made of a thin and flexible body such as paper or the like, and a relatively stiff reinforcing ring, of cardboard or the like, and on which the paper is fixed by a folded and embossed portion s 'extending against the outer side of the crown, downwards, and, on the other hand, upwards, inside this crown and against it; portion extends, on the other hand, inwardly from the crown, in contact with the inner surface of the upper part of the cover;

   the crown and the embossed skirt portion are intended to engage and resiliently grip the rim of the container so as to tightly and strongly secure the lid in its closed position.

   In addition, the cover according to the invention comprises a sheet of paper of thickness and composition similar to the parchment paper ordinarily used to cover jam jars, and a crown made of a relatively stiff material such as cardboard. , biting just to grab the container; the leaf forming the top part is folded and embossed down and out, and up and inside the crown; it has an embossed portion extending from the crown inward, in contact with the inner surface of the crown; this part forms a reinforcing crown to keep the paper tightly tight around the cardboard crown and to maintain the shape of the cover without having to use adhesives or the like.

   On the other hand, the invention relates to a method of constituting lids consisting in placing a disc made of a thin and flexible material such as paper or the like, against a reinforcing crown which would be made of. a relatively

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 rigid such as cardboard or the like; the disc is inserted and crowned in a die so as to emboss them and fold them tightly on the outer face of the crown to form the skirt; this is then folded inwards and tightened to go up inside the crown and from there to under the top of the cover.

   Another inventive element resides in the apparatus used to form @es @ouverages, and which comprises a carrier punch and a series of dies in which the punch can successively engage; the latter having a hollow shape and the first die of the series being equipped to carry the reinforcing crown and the superimposed sheet or disc such that when the dies are engaged, the crown and the disc are therein are forced, the disc is folded on the outer face of the crown to form a skirt, and, when the dies are removed, the crown and disc are carried by the carrier punch.

  A second die of the same series has a surface profiled in a ramp or truncated cone towards the interior, capable, once engaged with the carrier punch, to rotate in the skirt, and a die intended to engage. into the crown reinforcement and folding the skirt until it extends tightly inside the crown and up, and thence below the top of the cover; a last die of the same series is engaged with the carrier punch to eject the cover.

   In the figures opposite, the invention has been shown in a certain number of embodiments, but without limitation and simply by way of example.

   We see Figure 1: elevation and partial section of an upper punch or carrier or upper die.

    Figures 3, 4 and 6: in cross section of the first, second, third and fourth dies.

   Figure 5 is a plan view of Figure 4.

   Figures 7 to 11 are cross-sectional elevations showing the positions of the upper die relative to the lower dies at various stages of formation.

 of the cover.

   Figure 12 is a partial sectional elevation of a cover.

   Figure 13 is a top plan view.

   Figure 14 is an elevation of a simple form of die controller.

   Figure 15 is a sectional plan along the line XV-XV of Figure 14.

   Referring to the drawings, and especially to Figure 1, it can be seen that the upper punch (or carrier) comprises a cylindrical main body 1, the lower part 3 of which is of a larger diameter than that of the upper part 2, and comes out of the vertical bearing for a sleeve 4 normally held by a compression spring 5 in the position shown, with the inner flange 6 resting on the shoulder 7. The spring is held at its upper part by the cap 8, screwed on the large bolt 9 itself screwed into the opening 10.

   The lower end thereof is closed by a flanged collar 11 forming a vertical pad for the nut rod 12 which carries at its lower end a disc 13 held in the position represented by a compression spring 14 extending between the disc 13 and collar 11, the latter held in position by a fixed screw 15. The disc 13 slides gently in the recess 16, and has vents 17 allowing the passage of air when it moves vertically, as will be explained in detail later.

   On the lower part 3 of the body 1, a bolt 18 fixes a spring ratchet 19 stretched outwards, and whose elasticity keeps it normally engaged in the shoulder 20 of a bolt 21 fixed to the handle 4 The latter is therefore normally locked against any upward movement relative to the body 1, but the disc 13 can normally tend to rise relative to the body 1, despite the spring 14. A movable finger 22 door against the pawl-spring 19 and is located

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 even engaged by a pendant spring 23, the end of which is angled at 24, and which pivots from nozzles 25 in contact with the sleeve 4. This end 24 runs along a notch 26 formed in a flange 27.

   When the lever 23 is pressed inward despite the elastic resistance of the pawl 19, the latter abandons the shoulder 20 and the sleeve 4 is thus unlocked relative to the body 1, and can go up relative to it, despite the spring 5 , as we will see further on.

   The flange 27 has a frustoconical surface 28, with an extension 29 of which the outer side has a second frustoconical surface 30, offset inwardly with respect to the first, while the inner face is arched at 31 to form a channel. ring finger molding. The lower edge of the extension has a series of grooves 32 and ribs 42 arranged on a truncated cone and the role of which will be explained later, ridges and reentrants having a "V" cross section. It can be seen that the lower surface of the disc 13, and the arched walls 31 define a die mold 13a.

   The first lower die, shown in FIG. 2, consists of a cylindrical column 33 having an upper flange 34 and a lower one 35 allowing it to be fixed to a suitable support device. It also carries a movable annular part consisting of a skirt 36 and an upper part 37 carrying a crown 38 having a frustoconical surface 39.

  On the upper part 37 is provided a frustoconical surface formed of ribs 41 and grooves 40 of substantially V-shaped cross section, and intended to cooperate with the grooves 32 and the ribs 42 of the upper die, as will be seen below. .

  At the top of their bearing surfaces, the flange 34 and the part 37 of the skirt 36 are notched to present an annular housing opening upwards 43, intended to receive the cardboard ring 44 which is to form part of the cover to be removed. form. Skirt 36 and portion 37 are normally held in the position shown by compression spring 36a.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

   During the operation of the die elements just described, the crown 44 is housed in the annular slot 43 and the paper disc 45 (preferably of parchment paper similar to that which is used to cover the pots. of jam) is lying on this crown and centered by the crown 38. The upper and lower dies are then advanced in vertical coaxial alignment to the position shown in FIG. 7. During this advance, the surfaces 28 and 39 are the first to engage and as the skirt 4 is locked by the pawl 19, the crown 37 and the neighboring parts descend despite the spring 36a.

   Just before this engagement, the extensions 42 began to bend the eccentric portions of the paper disc onto the cardboard crown and as the surfaces engage with each other, the ribs 42 and grooves 32 (top). laughter) are in spaced engagement with the grooves 41 and ribs 40 (lower), to form a sort of zig-zag fold, the spacing being such as to allow the paper to slide therein without tearing. At the same time, the arched walls 31 slide downward on the outside of the cardboard crown until, as seen in Figure 7, the crown 44, with the paper 45 draped over it, comes fit into the mold 13a of the upper die.

   As the relative movement of the dies acts beyond the position of Figure 7, the remainder of the paper skirt is pulled through the zigzag fold and is folded down to the foot. This continuation of the relative movement is allowed by the disc 13 which rises despite the spring 14, with respect to the skirt 4. The diameter of the curved walls is in relation to that of the crown 45 plus the thickness of the. folded, draped, or forced paper over the crown so that the crown and paper fit tightly; in this way, when the dies are withdrawn, the top one removes with it the crown and paper (see fig. 8), both of which are pushed downwards by the element 13 returning to its normal position when the dies are withdrawn .

   This transfer from the crown and paper to the upper die is also easy.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 ity by the inward thinning of the notch 43 provided in the flange 34.

   From the above, it will be understood that, in the first die-forging operation, the paper is folded over the crown and pleated to form a cylindrical or substantially cylindrical skirt.

   The second lower die is shown in FIG. 3, and consists of a cylindrical column 46 with upper flange-stop 47 and lower placement flange 48; carries and drives a sleeve 49 which has a frustoconical surface 50, the column 46 itself having another frustoconical surface 51. A compression spring 52 normally maintains the sleeve 49 in the position shown against the flange 47.

   During the operation, this second lower die and the upper die carrying the cardboard crown and the paper disc, after execution of the first die-forging operation described above, are brought to the vertical coaxial alignment and advance one by one. towards the other, as seen in Fig. 8. If the feed continues beyond the coordinates of this figure, the pleated paper skirt is turned inward by the surface 50, then rises on the surface 51. The surface 30 of the upper die then engages the lower surface 50, and lowers the sleeve 49 relative to the column 46 and despite the spring 52. In fact, the column 46 rises relative to the paper and the paper. crown, and fold the skirt up and inside of it.

   In the final position (Fig. 9), the top of the column 46 is entirely inside the cardboard crown and presses against the disc 13, which can give way. The outer wall 53 and the top surface 54 of the column therefore form a die which folds the pleated paper skirt tightly inside the cardboard crown and upward, and which also folds the end of the skirt upward. 'interior for. form a crown 55 against the upper paper diaphragm and disc 13.

   This binding in 55, which is done

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 in the opposite direction to the folding at the bottom of the crown, serves to help maintain the paper in shape closely following the crown of @arton, by it forms a reinforcing crown whose largest dimension, in cross section, is perpendicular to the eten - due of interior paper to cardboard. This reinforcing crown will therefore resist any movement of this paper inward and away from the cardboard. It also appears that this locking arises from the natural tendency of the paper to unfold.

  Thus the part 55 presses against the top of the cap, and prevents the paper stretched inside from unfolding towards the bottom of the cardboard crown. Paper and cardboard are thus kept in close contact and provide a durable cover without the need for adhesive or other substances for attachment.

   As the dies are pulled apart, cardboard and paper are pushed back from the top of column 46 by tapered surface 50, and thus carried by the upper die.

   The lower third die, shown in Figures 4 and 5, consists of a support cylinder 56 with vertical slots 57, and a continuous annular upper part 58 forming a support surface for six arched arch segments. Each segment comprises an arcuate protrusion 59, of curved cross section, a maneuvering flange 60 forming a protrusion) a lower face 61 and two inner faces 62 and 63 joining on an arcuate line 63a.

   Further, the segments have curved channels 64 which, taken together, form an annular channel in which is placed an annular spring 65 exerting inwardly directed pressure on the segments, so that they are normally urged inward. the top, as seen, with the surfaces 63 bearing against the wall of a head 66 fixed by a set screw 67 (or its equivalent) in the cylinder 57, and which has a thin upper flange 68 preventing the spring 65 and the segments jump out of position.

   In operation, the upper die, carrying the cardboard crown and the paper folded into the shape shown

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 in Figure 9, and the third lower die, are brought into vertical coaxial alignment and approached to the final position of Figure 10. As they approach, the protrusions 59 which together constitute a circular camber element. - laire, pass inside the cardboard crown.

   Immediately thereafter, the lower edge of the projection 29 of the upper die engages the flanges 60 and the segments are pushed upwards despite the spring 65, until they reach the position of figure 10, the line curve (or curved edge) 63a, serving totally or in part as a support line,
The protrusions 59 move outward and engage the cover flange to press it against the molding groove 31 of the upper die. This flange is thus arched, which allows it to be forced and held on the neck of the jar to be covered. When the upper and lower dies are withdrawn, the spring 65 pushes the protrusions 59 inward, which releases the lower rim of the cover, which is thus carried away by the upper die.

   The fourth lower die, called the ejector, shown in FIG. 6, consists of a cylinder 69 profiled at its upper part in a frustoconical surface 70, and carrying an arm 71 directed upwards, with a ramp 72 at its top.

   In operation, when the upper die and this fourth lower die are aligned coaxially and vertically with the arm 71 directly above the lever 23, they are brought closer to one another. The tapered surface 24 of lever 23 engages ramp 72, the lever is pressed inward, as shown in Figure 11, and the spring loaded pawl releases boss 20, so that skirt 4 is released relative to the body 1. The surface 30 of the upper die then engages the surface 70 of the lower die, which stops the skirt 4 and the body 1, but the disc 13 continues to descend despite the spring 5, which ultimately results in l ejection of the finished cover which falls into the cylinder 60.

   The invention enables the production of an inexpensive cover strong enough to withstand repeated removal and repositioning much like a metal cover or the like, but with the advantages inherent in paper covers. It will also be understood that the elasticity of the cardboard crown and of its chamber allow it to be forced and held tightly on the ordinary neck of the jar without the aid of any type of fixing.

   The pleating and folding operations described above, including folding part 55 inward, ensure that the paper is kept tightly secured to the cardboard crown throughout their service.

   The apparatus described above has been principally by way of example, and variants can be made to it without departing from the scope of the invention.

   The relative approach or spacing of the upper die (or punch) with respect to the other dies, and their relative movements, can be controlled manually or, preferably, mechanically.

   For example, the four lower dies can be mounted on a table 80 mounted to turn on the bench 81 of a frame having a vertical portion 82 and a horizontal upper portion 83. The latter carries a movable vertical rack 84 carrying the horizontal upper die. .

  This rack is engaged by a pinion 85 mounted on a shaft 86 carrying the control handle 87 itself provided with a counterweight 88 which normally maintains it in the position shown against the stop 89, the upper die being in. its raised position. It will be understood that by lowering the handle 87, this die cooperates with that of the lower dies placed below it.

   The rotation of the table 80 is ensured by a lever 90 pivoting around the very center of rotation of the table. A ratchet

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 91 pivots at 92 on the outer end of the arm of the lever 90, and includes a ratchet tooth 93 intended to engage in one of the four notches 94 provided in the table 80. The ratchet also includes a handle 95 and a roller 96. When the handle 95 is pushed in a clockwise direction (fig.15), the tooth 93 leaves the notch 94 and the roller 96 runs around the periphery of the table. If the lever is pushed far enough, the pawl engages the next notch 94 when it is returned counterclockwise.

   The table can thus be rotated in stages of 90, so as to bring the lower dies successively under the upper. The exact adjustment of the positions is ensured by the impact of the pawl 91 against the stop 97.

   It will be understood that instead of paper, any other flexible material capable of being profiled and folded can be treated as has been described. One can, for example, use what is called the "cellulosic film". It will also be understood that the reinforcing crown can be made of any suitable body other than cardboard. It can, for example, be constituted in layers of paper and in this case the term “crown” will be understood as comprising an annular part formed by the winding of a strip of paper in a sleeve made of superimposed layers.

   It should also be understood that the applicant is not claiming the known covers comprising a "top" and a "skirt" made of metal or any other material rigid enough to retain its shape by itself. The present invention is characterized by the fact that it makes it possible to form lids of thin paper or of a similar body which is insufficiently rigid in itself to keep its shape, but which, due to its attachment to a relatively rigid crown of cardboard or other similar material, forms a relatively rigid cover and retains its shape. Finally, it will be understood that, in the description / the term "thin and flexible material" is meant only to include the thin paper or other similar flexible body incapable in sol of forming a cover.

 sufficiently rigid to garlter form and grip the container.

This can be made, for example, of cardboard or similar material on which the paper or its equivalent of the thin or flexible sheet is fixed by its folded and pleated portions which first descend by tightly squeezing the outer face of the crown. of cardboard then come up along its inner face just as closely, to extend inwardly in contact with the lower surface of the top of the cover. The paper may be of the construction and thickness of parchment paper ordinarily used to cover jars of jams. This cover has over its entire edge a convex cross-sectional portion in which the cardboard crown and the paper skirt are arched to properly grip the body of the container. The method of constituting this cover consists in placing a sheet or a thin or flexible disc, for example of paper, against the more rigid reinforcing ring, for example of cardboard, in introducing them into a folding die and pleating the disc in a narrow manner on the outside face of the cardboard crown to form a skirt, then to fold this skirt inwards still against the crown, then to make the pleating go up towards the top and finally inward until it is applied. - fold under the top of the cover. Crown and paper are finally profiled with a camber as previously indicated. The apparatus for making these covers comprises an upper or carrier die and a series of lower dies successively engaging with the upper one. This has a molding element, and the first lower die is equipped to bring the reinforcement ring and the sheet under the disc superimposed on it to force them into the mold of the upper die so that the flexible disc or folded over the outer portion of the crown to form a skirt. After that, when the two dies move away from each other, crown and disc remain integral with the upper or carrier die. The second lower die has a frustoconical ramp surface intended to turn the paper skirt upside down and fold it upwards, inside the crown of the paper. <Desc / Clms Page number 14> cardboard, until it is partially applied under the top of the disc. The last die of the lower series cooperates with the upper die to eject the formed cover. The upper die comprises a metal skirt and a disc movable with respect to it, the skirt having its lower edge profiled in ribs and pleating grooves in which are embedded similar elements of the first lower die to pleat the. paper in annular zig-zags when it is folded down on the reinforcement crown. The second die comprises a column element, the top of which is profiled inwards in a truncated cone with an annular upper surface and an identical side wall, all intended to penetrate into the reinforcement ring, and a movable outer sleeve. also having a truncated cone contoured surface inwardly for rotating the skirt intended to engage the corresponding surface of the upper die skirt, whereby the skirt and sleeve, as well as the cardboard crown and the paper disc, move together in relation to the lower crown; the paper is thus folded upwards inside the crown. The forming elements of the third die comprise a number of segments resiliently mounted in a support column, or its equivalent, each with a convex die face and a working protrusion; these segments are normally retained in a low position by a spring, so that the die faces can pass inside the reinforcing ring, and the protrusions can engage against the upper die to tilt the segments outwards and force the die faces to <Desc / Clms Page number 15> press the skirt of the cover outwards. in the concave annular groove of the upper die. The last die of the lower series comprises a cylinder carrying an arm directed upwards and an upper surface intended to engage against a corresponding surface of the upper die. and wherein the skirt thereof is mounted movably relative to it, so that it can move relatively; but it is normally locked by a device intended to be unlocked by the aforementioned arm; thus, when these surfaces engage, the skirt is stopped, and the upper die disc part moves to eject the completed cover from the upper die chamber.
