On pratique
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Or,
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

a Manufacture of short reinforced sheets ".
The conventional method of making sheets of asbestos cement or the like consists of coating a rotating cylinder with this asbestos cement or other material in the wet state. The most common machines which include such a rotating cylinder are of the batschek type in which successive layers of wet material are transferred by a carrier belt to the cylinder (often referred to as a forming cylinder).
When the accumulation of successive layers reaches the desired thickness, an incision should be made parallel to the axis to allow the multi-ply coating which covers the forming cylinder to be detached and removed in the form of a sheet. We practice
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
often a groove along the cylinder, a groove that can be called a dividing line, and to make the aforementioned cut, the operator passes a knife along this groove. However, the length of the sheet is determined by the diameter of the forming cylinder and when it is desired to vary the length, it is necessary to replace the forming cylinder with another of a different diameter.
It is impractical to have to provide a large number of forming rolls to allow the production of sheets of different lengths, so sheets of short length are sometimes produced by using a sufficiently long forming roll. large to ensure the production of sheets of great length, then sectioning that sheet into shorter sections. In practice, a long sheet is generally cut into two short sheets; to ensure a wide variety of lengths for the sheets, it may be necessary to vary considerably the relative lengths of these two short sheets between them.
For example, if we use a forming cylinder which gives a sheet 3.65 meters long, we can cut this sheet by half to give two sections of 1.82 m each, or else the cut to give a sheet of 1m52 and a sheet of 2m12 or two sheets of 2m 432 and 1 m 216 each.
Cutting a sheet of asbestos cement that is still plastic does not present any difficulty. However, it often happens that the sheets have to be reinforced or reinforced internally, the reinforcement being introduced while the material is still on the forming cylinder, and being interposed between two underlying layers. Cutting a sheet thus reinforced is not easy, because the reinforcement is often metallic and it is found that it is practically impossible to shear a reinforced sheet while the asbestos cement is still plastic. Gold,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
it is at this stage that it is desirable to cut a sheet to its final dimension.
In accordance with the present invention, short length reinforced sheets are made by establishing a coating thickness on a rotating cylinder to form a long length sheet and then inserting sections of reinforcement into the material in such a manner. enveloping the cylinder therein, these reinforcing sections being spaced a short distance along the circumference of the cylinder, so as to leave without reinforcement at least two short circumferential lengths of the accumulated coating.
One of these unarmed sections comprises the parting line, that is to say the line along which the operator makes the cut, whether or not this is defined by a groove on the forming cylinder; the other section (or each of the other sections) comprises the line (or lines) along which the long sheet is cut to form the short sheets. It is thus possible to cut the long sheet into short sheets without having to shear the reinforcement.
Each section of the frame preferably has the shape of a number of parallel threads extending circumferentially around the rotating cylinder. In patent No. 935,006 of October 21, 1946, an embodiment of an apparatus for feeding reinforcing threads longitudinally to the rotating cylinder of a machine of the type has been described. Hatschek, so as to locate these wires on the cylinder in predetermined positions, relative to the dividing line.
L; The present invention can advantageously be implemented by modifying this apparatus; will now describe by way of example the preferred means for carrying out this modification in accordance with the invention, suitable for the manufacture of reinforced sheets each of which is
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
intended to be cut into shorter sheets.
On the attached drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the preferred form of the apparatus.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same apparatus; and
Figure 3 shows schematically the position of the reinforcing threads on the rotating cylinder as well as in the finished sheet.
In the apparatus shown, an endless felt strip 1 carrying a layer of asbestos cement paste, passes over a roller 2, then comes into contact with a rotating cylinder of the forming cylinder 3. The cement d the asbestos is transferred to the forming roll, at the point where the web 1 passes through the gap between the forming roll and a pressure roll 4; aufur and as the operation progresses, successive thicknesses are superimposed on the surface of the forming cylinder.
When the desired thickness is reached, the coating is removed from the forming roll, making a cut with a knife guided by a groove or parting line 5 formed in the surface of the roll; the coating then detaches in the form of a flat sheet, during the next revolution effected by the forming cylinder.
Two separate feed devices are provided, each corresponding to one of the groups of wires which constitute a section of the frame. These devices comprise a set of lower inclined guide tubes 6 and a set of upper guide tubes 7 located immediately above the tubes 6 and forming, with respect to the horizontal plane, a slightly greater angle, so that the two sets of tubes converge towards the forming cylinder, each set being supported by supports 8 and 9. The tubes @
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
have a funnel-shaped mouth 10 and are aligned with two new sets of tubes 11 and 12 which also have a funnel-shaped mouthpiece 13 and are supported by brackets 14 and 15.
Is placed in each of the tubes 11 and 12, a reinforcing wire of suitable length which enters the corresponding tube 6 or 7; the wires cannot exceed these tubes, thanks to the plates 16 and 17 closing off the ends of the tubes 6 and 7 respectively. These plates slide in guides 18 and 19 and are pierced with holes 20 corresponding to the end of the tubes. The plates are pulled to the position in which the orifices 20 are located opposite the end of the tubes (or corresponding position) by means of the wires 21 and 22, against the action of tension springs 23 and 24 which return the plates to the mismatch position as soon as the tension on the wire is removed. The wires 21 and 22 pass over pulleys 25, 26 and 27,28 respectively and are attached to the frames 29 and 30 of the solenoids 31 and 32.
Thus, when the solenoids are excited, they attract the reinforcements which exert, on the wires 21 and 22, a traction bringing the plates 16 and 17 to the position for which the orifices are opposite the end of the tubes; as soon as the solenoids are de-energized, the plates return to the mismatch position.
When the wires are in place in the tubes, each is apparent over a short axial length, corresponding to the interval between the sets of tubes' 6 and 11 or 7 and 12, as the case may be. Each wire undergoes, at this point, the friction of a pair of rollers 33 and 34 or 35 and 36 driven by an electric motor 37; rollers tend to push the wire up and down along the tube. The operation of these rollers is exactly analogous to that
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
rollers 23 and 24 shown in Figures 5 and
6 of the aforementioned patent.
As soon as one or the other of the solenoids 31 or 32 is energized to bring the corresponding plate to its corresponding position, the wires of the corresponding set of tubes are advanced under the action of the friction rollers, and are guided by a sheet metal extension 38 provided at the end of the tubes, so as to regularly envelop the forming cylinder 3, taking the positions indicated in FIG. 3.
Each of the solenoids is energized by an electrical circuit which comprises a cam operated switch, a switch 39 controls the solenoid 31 and a switch 40 controls the solenoid 32. The switches are carried by a lever arm 41 pivoting at 42 and are actuated by cams 43 and 44 carried by an extension 45 of the main shaft of the forming cylinder. In its free position, the arm 41 hangs so that the switches are disengaged from the corresponding cams, but the operator can place the arm in a position for which it is in contact with a hillock 46 and the switches can be actuated by the protruding parts of the respective cams.
The cam 43 which is used to trigger the advance of the wires in the tubes of the set 6 is wedged on the shaft, so as to ensure a timing adjustment of the power supply, so that the ends of the wires be located very close to the parting line 5. Since, whatever the relative lengths of the two short sheets into which the sheet is to be cut, the end of the reinforcement must be very close to the end of the sheet, the timing of cam 43 will be constant and will not require any adjustment.
On the other hand, the position of the end of the threads of the deu- @
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
xth clearance in the tubes 7 depends on the relative length of the two short sheets and it will therefore be necessary to adjust the angular position of the cam 44 accordingly.
In service, the operator allows the coating to accumulate on the cylinder until it has reached about half the desired thickness. He then places the lever arm 41 in contact with the stop to bring the surface of the cams 43 and 44 into contact with the corresponding switches. The two sets of reinforcing wires then come out, brought to the forming cylinder at the appropriate times, and envelop it uniformly. The coating continues to. build up on the reinforcing threads until the desired final thickness has been reached, at which time the coating is peeled off the surface of the cylinder in the usual manner.
Although the invention is very particularly useful in its application to the manufacture of sheets of asbestos cement, it is also applicable to the manufacture of sheets by means of any similar material capable of hardening from the same. plastic state and composed for example of other fibers or another binder.
It should be understood, on the other hand, that the various characteristics of the apparatus described have been given only by way of example and that they can be modified according to the conditions of application. . For example, instead of providing the switches 39 and 40 movable and moving away from the surface of their respective cams 43 and 44, it is possible to provide them fixed in contact with the surface of these cones, so that the switches close with each revolution of the forming cylinder. In this case, an additional switch is provided in the circuit of each solenoid, the two switches
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
being actuated by a common operating lever allowing the operator to close the two switches together at the same time, during the revolution of the forming cylinder during which the reinforcement is to be introduced.
