<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

Control for electric gas discharge lamps.
The invention relates generally to lighting control systems and more particularly to systems and apparatus for controlling the operation of electric gas discharge lamps of the type which start on a voltage. and operate on another voltage, usually lower. An example of this type of lamp is the mercury vapor fluorescent lamp and the present invention is particularly suited to the control of such a lamp.
Hitherto the operation of electric gas discharge lamps has usually been regulated by means of a control element inserted in the circuit of the lamp. The control element usually consisted of a choke, a condenser and a cola. - thermal control switch of a certain type mounted in

a suitable enclosure or box, wired in the desired manner and provided with terminals. As these control elements are rather bulky and of little ornamental appearance, it is necessary to hide them in a more or less inaccessible place, usually in the pipes of the building or of another construction or the lamp. is used.
In addition, these control elements being of final shape, the various parts being placed in the box itself closed with an insulating material, it is very difficult to replace or repair one or the other of the components. these parts without having to tear off and redo the element.
Experience has shown that the most delicate part that needs to be replaced most often is the thermal switch. This is due to. severe conditions. which are imposed on it on frequent starts in normal use or in the event of lamp failure, the cathode remaining intact, but the lamp not starting for lack of emissive material at the cathodes.
It is clear that the control elements used so far are not entirely satisfactory from the point of view of economical operation of the lamps, a fault in the thermal switch causing the replacement of the entire control device, which not only causes a waste of time. by. that it is necessary to open the pipes and disconnect the wires, but is expensive and puts the lamp out of service for an excessive time.
The object of the invention is therefore to provide an improved control for electric gas discharge lamps, which will be of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture and maintain, and so arranged that it can be easily replaced. the element that most often fails in normal service. not

The other aims of the invention are:
More particularly) to control the operation of an electric gas discharge lamp by means of a thermal control switch placed on or in the socket or socket of the lamp.
Create a gas discharge electric lamp control system that uses a thermal control switch located near the lamp and in an accessible location separate from and away from other control elements of the control system.
Create a socket at the socket for electric gas discharge lamps carrying or containing the thermal control switch for the lamp.
These and other purposes will become apparent from the following description with reference to the drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 is a schematic view of a starting and operating circuit for a gas discharge electric lamp according to the main features of the invention.
Figure 2 is an elevational view showing one way of mounting one type of thermal control switch to one of the sockets or lamp holders.
Figure 3 is similar to Figure 2, showing another type of control relay mounted on the socket with the control and operating circuit for the lamp.

Figure 5 is a view similar to that of Figure 3 showing how to mount yet another type of relay or control switch.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
In Figure 1 of the drawing, the numeral 10 designates in general an electric gas discharge lamp of the mercury vapor fluorescent type to be supplied by a suitable voltage source connected to the conductors 11 and 12.
Lamp 10 is of known construction and may include a tubular glass casing 13 sealed at both ends and provided with pairs of terminal pins or plugs 14 to which cathodes 15 are connected within the casing. The particular lamp shown is known as a fluorescent lamp and, like other mercury vapor lamps, is of the dual voltage type, meaning that it starts at a set voltage and operates at a different voltage. This requires the use of a choke or transformer having a high internal reactance and, by way of example, a choke 16 is shown inserted in the lamp circuit.
A pair of sockets, or lamp holders, 17 and 18, are used to hold the opposite ends of lamp 10 and conduct current to them. These sockets are provided with contact sockets 19 in which the terminal pins 14 of the lamp are placed and which connect the latter to the voltage source. This can be done in any suitable construction; the details thereof not being of particular importance for the present invention, these contacts have been shown schematically.
A control switch 21 which may be of any suitable type such as, for example, the thermal switch shown, serves to adjust the effect of the inductor 16 for controlling the voltage applied to the lamp during the periods. start-up and service. It should be noted that the type par-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The particular control switch used is not of particular importance to the present invention, provided that it can be used to control the lamp as desired during start-up and service periods.
The control switch 21 will generally include a normally closed contact 22 and an associated heating element 23 and will be constructed so that the contact 22 opens as a result of its heating due to the associated heating element 23.
The contact 22 of the control switch being normally closed, the inductor 16, the cathodes 15 of the lamp and the heating element 23 of the control switch are connected in series to the supply conductors 11 and 12. When these conductors are turned on or connected to a suitable source, the heater 23 forces the contact 22 to interrupt this series circuit after heating the cathodes, thus producing a high voltage spike or "shock" by the inductor 16 which starts the lamp by initiating a discharge between the heated cathodes 15.
Until now, it has been the practice to mount the control switch 21, the inductor 16 and the capacitor 24, the latter being placed at the terminals of the lamp to suppress high frequency interference, in a common casing or box filled with a suitable insulating compound so as to form a whole which can be considered as a control device.
As stated above, this method is neither economical nor satisfactory from the point of view of operation and maintenance, the control switch being subjected to relatively severe conditions by frequent starting in normal use. a new lamp in good working order. The control switch suffers more in some cases when the lamp begins to reach the end of its normal life with the cathodes starting to
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
deteriorate, which makes the starting of the more difficult lamp by the need to make several tests i.e. several operations of the control switch - If the lamp does not start, the control switch will function repeated in his effort to start the lamp, if not replaced. this or does not disonnnect it.
This is why in order to be able to easily and economically replace out-of-service control switches, the invention provides a control switch mounting system, independent of the type or of its particular construction and of any another control element which could be incorporated, which places it near the lamp in an accessible and more or less exposed position.
The control switch will preferably be mounted on one of the sockets or lamp holders, as shown schematically in Figure 1. In this example, the control device 25 comprises a suitable housing (not shown serving only for the choke 16 and the capacitor 24 and filled as usual with an insulating compound. As the capacitor 24 is small compared to the choke 16, it can in some cases be mounted in or combined with the control switch, and it is clear that the present invention applies to this case.
Figure 2 shows how to mount the control switch 21 directly on the socket 17, the sockets 17 and 18 being placed on the cover 29 of the connection box or on another suitable support, the circuits being those of figure 1 .
Figure .3 gives the practical assembly of another type of control switch 26 on the secret 17. In this case, the control switch 26, sometimes referred to as the internal relay tube.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
candescent, generally comprises a glass casing 27 with a screw base 28 like that of a small lighting lamp which is screwed as shown into a suitably threaded opening in the lower part of the support.
The casing 27 contains the control and switching elements as well as a lonisable body which serve, once heated by the passage of the current, to first close the circuit passing through the cathodes of the lamp in series and then to cut this circuit so as to produce the peak voltage by the inductor for starting the lamp.
In this embodiment of the invention, the sockets 17 and 18 are surface mounted with the connections as shown. The control switch has a general operation similar to that of Figure 1.
Figure 4 shows another way of mounting the control switch of Figure 3; the main socket is placed flush and includes an auxiliary bracket or adapter 31 which serves to secure the control switch 26 to the main socket 17. In this case, the main socket 17 and the adapter 31 are attached to the cover by means of a single bolt 32, the cover being pierced, under the lamp, with an opening through which passes the control switch 26 which is thus more sheltered while being accessible. In the present example, the control switch can be easily removed for inspection or replacement by removing the sound lamp or its brackets.
Fig. 5 gives the practical assembly of yet another type of control switch 33, which is a different execution of the glowing relay tube, manufactured in the form of a metal casing containing control elements similar to those of the control switch. command 26 and operating according to
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
same principle. It differs from switch 26 in that it has a pair of contact pins 34 and 35 which mechanically engage against the terminals in adapter 31 so as to hold the control switch in place and complete the circuit. electric by its control elements. The control switch 33 is also mounted under the lamp and passes through an opening in the support 29.
The above description will show that the invention presents a method of mounting the control switch independent of its type or construction, in an easily accessible position on or near the socket or lamp holder, so that it or entirely independent of any other control element used to start and regulate the operation of a lamp of the type described. Thus, it has become possible to use and operate these lamps, and particularly the fluorescent lamp, more economically and with more advantages than previously.
The accessibility and ease of replacement of the commando switch not only reduces the cost of lamps of this type in operation but also minimizes the time that these lamps are out of service, replacing a command switch faulty taking no longer than that of a skipped lighting lamp.
Although several embodiments of the invention have been shown and described, it goes without saying that other embodiments can still be produced without departing from the scope of the present invention.
