<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
transformateur 8.
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
ment.

"Improvements made or relating to the start-up or lighting of fluorescent tubes".
The invention relates to the start-up or ignition of fluorescent tubes of the kind employing heating filaments for hot starting or ignition.
The main object of the invention is to provide an improved device for allowing these fluorescent tubes to be put into operation or turned on practically instantaneously and with the filament partially heated, or, according to a variant,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
@ (be switched on after sufficient time has elapsed after switching on the illumination current for the filaments which are to be brought to the normally heated state.
It is also an object of the invention to reduce the peak voltages heretofore required for instantaneous switching on or on of fluorescent tubes, and to eliminate the need to use selectively controlled start switches in the field. hot ignition of these tubes.
According to the present invention, an autotransformer comprises two windings, both electrically connected to the primary winding of the autotransformer and these two windings are respectively connected to the filaments for heating them. during ignition and maintenance of heat during operation of the tube, means also being provided which introduce charges in series with the tubes.
A self-induction coil may be provided in series with the tube to reduce the voltage across the tube during normal tube operation, and another self-induction coil is provided in series with the primary winding of the auto. -transformer to reduce the voltage across the tube before ignition, the windings being such that if the filaments are broken, sufficient voltage is supplied to the tube terminals to effect cold ignition.
A capacitor is preferably connected across the transformer and its self-inducing coil, so that an electrical pulse is initially supplied when switched on.
The primary winding of the auto-transformer and its impedance can be connected in series to the terminals of the main lighting current supply wires and the fluorescent tube with its associated impedance in series are connected. in parallel with the primary and secondary windings of the autotransformer and its impedance in series, while the filament

heater tube with which its series impedance is conneoted can be connected to a separate secondary winding of this transformer, and the tube heater filament which is spaced from this series impedance can be connected to the terminals of this transformer. a secondary winding of the transformer.
In order to enable the invention to be clearly understood and easily put into practice, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawing showing the circuit of the connections and illustrating the invention as embodied in the operating circuit of a tube. hot start fluorescent.
In the drawing, 1 indicates the fluorescent tube having cathodes and 3, 4 / heating filaments 5.6; 7 is a self-induction coil supplying an impedance in series with the fluorescent tube 1; 8 is the transformer consisting of a winding going from point 25 to point 26, with several coils wound on top of each other in known manner. An induction coil 9 provides an impedance which is connected in series to the primary side of the transformer winding. The primary winding (15 to 25) of the transformer 8 and the inductance coil 9 are connected to the terminals of the current supply wires 12, 13.
The fluorescent tube 1 and its impedance 7 in series are in parallel with the transformer 8 and the coil 9 via the conductors 18 and 12a respectively; 10 is a separate secondary winding of transformer 8, which winding is connected to heating filament 6 of cathode 3 at the end of tube 1 connected to the impedance, and 14 is a tap on the transformer winding which supplies a reduced voltage power supply to the heating filaments 5 of the cathode 4 through the conductors 18, 19.
As shown in the drawing, a main current supply conductor 13 is connected to a tap 15 of the transformer and the other conductor 12 is connected to the end 17 of the choke coil. induction 9 which is far from
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
transformer 8.
When the arrangement is intended for instantaneous partially hot starting of the tube, a voltage damping capacitor 11 may be connected in parallel with the transformer 8 and its series impedance or inductance 9, and with the tube. fluorescent 1 and its impedance in series; for example, the capacitor 11 can be connected between the winding supply conductor 12 and the current supply conductor 18 from the main windings of the transformer to the cathode 4 of the tube 1 which is remote. of its conjugate series impedance.
Alternatively, in order to normally perform hot start without the use of a selective switching mechanism for control, the capacitor 11 can be placed directly across the main conductors 12, 13 for supplying power. lighting, as shown in lines in the drawing.
The secondary inductance auxiliary winding 10 of the filament heater and the filament heater plug 14 of the main winding of the transformer 8 may advantageously be arranged so as to apply approximately equal voltages to the cathodes of the tube. so that the heating current supply to the filament can have a power factor of approximately unity.
When operating the arrangement described above for instantaneous or partially hot starting or switching on of the fluorescent tube at the instant when the main current supply is switched on to transformer 8, the vol- The flow across the primary winding 15 to 25 of the transformer causes sufficient current to flow through the cathodes of tube 1 to immediately heat the filaments thereof. The self-induction coil 9 effects a lowering of the voltage of the supply current going to the tube oathodes before and after the ignition of the tube.
If the voltage of
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
line is for example (230 volts of alternating current and that the transformer is established to raise this one up to 320 volts, the self-induction 9 can reduce this one to for example 270. The current of internal voltage aided by the voltage damping coming from capacitor 11 connected in parallel with this transformer and its impedance, ignites an arc between the tube cathodes as soon as the filaments are sufficiently heated and, consequently, a setting. operation or nearly instantaneous ignition of the tube can be achieved at peak voltages lower than those heretofore required for this purpose.
By the circuit arrangement described above, the cycle of the tube current is caused to be substantially 90 behind the cycle of the auxiliary heating current supply, so that the current supplied to the heating filaments will reach its maximum value when the tube current is around zero, so that the tendency to flicker is reduced.
In using the arrangement to turn the tube on or on under normal hot start conditions without the use of a selective control start switch, the capacitor may be placed directly across the terminals. of the main current supply conductors only, after which the reduced voltage of the tube lighting current will not receive the capacitance damping described above and there will therefore be a lapse of time after the current is switched on, while the filaments reach the temperature required to allow the main wind current to arc between the cathodes. The tube can therefore be caused to operate or ignite with any desired time delay corresponding to the time required for normal heating of the filaments.
Transformer 8 is a reactionless auto-transformer which can be a raise or lower transformer.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
is lying. The impedance 7 in series with the fluorescent tube 1 is also advantageously wound in opposition to the impedance 9 in series with the transformer, so that the flux in the cores is in the same direction.
The presence of the impedance 9 in series with the transformer 8 has economic advantages. It therefore increases the turns per volt and allows a reduction in the magnetization current for a determined quantity of copper.
The series impedance of the transformer and an energized part of the transformer supplies the number of turns needed per volt of the main supply current to give sufficient voltage across the tube and the series impedance with this one, to start the arc.
The transformer and the series impedance of the tube are preferably combined in the form of a single tap self-induction, with the parts of the winding arranged as required.
