<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
Une large came 33 (fig. 2,
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>

Machine for punching a recording.
The invention relates to a machine for punching a recording under the control of a second recording punched in advance; it may also relate to other perforating machines.
The main aim of the invention is to obtain improved perforating machines, in which
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the control and operation of the members are intended to produce a rotational movement, for the purposes of obtaining higher speeds and smoother operation.
The invention also aims to create a new mechanism for selecting and activating the punches, in which rotary devices comprising cams are adjusted and coordinated to carry out efficient and direct implementation, at the same time as rapid. chosen punches.
It also aims to provide a device for selectively controlling punch stops, in which a magnetically actuated latch releases a stopper so that it operates, an adjustment device retaining the latch, until the density of the flow is reached. or to a maximum in the electromagnet which actuates it, after which the lock is released by the adjustment device.
Another object of the invention is to obtain a mechanism for analyzing and punching the record, in which columns of a record are analyzed one at a time in order to control the punching of similar data in another. recording and in which improved controls are provided by which the analysis of a column is carried out before the. end of punching of a previous column.
A more specific aim is to provide a machine for the analysis and the punching of a recording, in which the operations of analyzing the choice of the punches and the implementation of the latter are carried out one after the other. others for each column of a record analyzed, and in which the analysis and the choice of punches for a column are carried out during the operation of puncturing a preceding column.

Other objects of the invention will be indicated in the description and the summary which follow. The accompanying drawings show, by way of example, the principle of the invention and an embodiment of the machine, which is considered to be the best way to apply this principle.

successive stages.
The recording tape to be reproduced is shown in fig. 4; it is designated by 10 and along its length are arranged four horizontal rows 11 of perforation positions, in which rectangular holes 12 are made to represent data by one or more holes in vertical columns.
In alignment with each vertical column is a circular propulsion hole 13 with which, as will be explained, a suitable spiked wheel is capable of engaging to advance the tape 10. Twenty-eight columns constitute a record, as indicated in. fig. 4, and in each record groups of seven columns constitute three panels separated from each other by a column in white and separated from the panel of the neighboring record by five columns in white.
During the operation of the machine, the holes 12 must be analyzed in order to control the punching of a second blank recording and thereby effect a reproduction of the tape 10 of FIG. 4. An analysis is performed by simultaneously reading the first or left columns in the three panels of a record, then reading the second. sets of columns, and so on, until all seven columns have been read and reproduced. Thus, in seven read steps, the twenty-one perforated columns will have been reproduced and after that the analysis is suspended until the first columns of the panels of the next recording arrive in the analysis position, when operations are repeated.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
In fig. 1, the tape 10 is led from a supply reel 14 over and around guide rollers generally designated 15 (see also Fig. 6), to a wheel 16 bearing spikes and fixed to a axis 19 and from there, around a roller 17, to a rewinding reel 18. A mechanism comprising a Maltese cross and shown in FIG. 5, advances spiked wheel 16 intermittently.
In this figure, 20 represents the main motor axis of the apparatus; it is actuated from any suitable source of energy and carries a disc 21, fixed to it and provided with a pin 22 capable of being engaged in the radial notches of a Maltese cross wheel 23 , so that when the disc 21 rotates, it causes the wheel 23 to advance intermittently and, by a mechanism generally designated by 24, actuates the axis 19 of the spiked wheel, so as to advance the tape 10 of a step or a column for each revolution of the main axis 20.
A tape 25 is located directly behind the tape 10; is led from a supply reel to a rewinding reel, on rollers 15, (see Figs. 2, 3 and 6). This tape is brought by a wheel 16a, bearing spikes (fig. 2) and also fixed on the axis 19, so that the tape 25 advances at the same speed as the tape 10.
In the start-up operations, the tape 10 is wound on the rollers 15 and the wheel 16, and the tape 25 is introduced in the same way. In preparation for its operation, the tape 25 is provided with propelling holes similar to the holes 13 of the tape 10 between 1a. wheel 16a and an intermediate point between the two rollers 15 on the right. In addition, propulsion holes will be made
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
automatically as the reproduction progresses and as will be explained in what follows.
As the tape 10 advances progressively, it passes three contact rollers 26, isolated from the machine, and three sets of analysis or reading brushes 27, acting jointly and mounted at a distance from each other equal to eight columns of The recording, so that when any column of one panel is in front of the left set of brushes 27, the corresponding columns of the other two panels are in front of the next two sets of brushes. Each set includes four brushes 27 (fig. 3 and 6) in front of the perforation rows 11 and a common brush 27a to conduct the current to the roller 26.
Now, according to fig. 2, the ribbon 25 passes between a die 28 and three sets of punches 29 aligned with the three sets of brushes 27. There is one punch 29 for each brush 27 and, in line with each set of punches, there is an additional punch 29a, the perforating end of which has a circular cross-section for punching propelling holes 30 in the tape 25 (fig.'6).
The punches 29 and 29a are mounted as shown in fig. 2, between a lower guide 31 and an upper guide 32, with a slight frictional action to hold the punches in place, despite the effect of gravity. A large cam 33 (fig. 3) crosses above each set of punches, one of said cams being fixed to the main motor shaft 20, while the other two are mounted on pins 34, actuated by the 'axis 20 by means of gears 35 (fig. 5), so that the cams rotate in the direction indicated by the arrows in fig. 2,
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
making one turn for each step of the advance of bands 10 and 25.
For each punch 29 and 29a, there is a stop 36, mounted to pivot at 37 on a lever 38, which for its part is mounted to pivot at 39 on a fixed stud 40.
The stop 36 is fork-shaped, to provide a finger 41, which rests on a cam 42. Five cams 42 are provided, with pins 43, which carry them and are connected to each other and actuated from there. the lower shaft 34 (fig.5) by gears designated as a whole by 44 so that the cams 42 make one revolution for each revolution of the main axis 20. Thus, when the cams 42 rotate, the free ends of the stops 36 oscillate in the vertical direction. Cams 42 move together with cams 33 and lie below arms 45 extending laterally on both sides of punches 29 and 29a, with the arms being disposed on opposite sides of the punches to achieve a compact arrangement, as shown in FIG. 6.
Any punch which has been lowered will be brought up by the pair of adjacent cams 42, which by their balanced arrangement exert on it a torsion-free action, so that the punches are raised by the action of the cams to the positions shown. to the. fig. 2.
The stop 36 is placed in the following manner between the head of the punch 29 and the cam 33 which actuates it. Normally, a carrier lever 38 (Fig. 2) is urged by a spring 47 around its pivot 39, but it is prevented from rotating because its extension 48 engages a latch 49, which is also pushed up to the point. 'to a locking position, as seen, by a spring 50.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
To the latch 49 is connected at 51 a control rod 52, the other end of which (fig. 1) is connected to the armature 53 of an electromagnet 54. There is an electromagnet 54 and connections 52, 51 , etc., for each of the punches, and the electromagnets are staggered in the usual manner to accommodate a tighter arrangement of the punches.
After energizing an electromagnet 54, a rod 52 is fixed to tilt a latch 49, but rotation is prevented by the fact that a face 55 of the latch rests on a high point of a triangular cam 56. , fixed on a pin 57, so that the operation of the lock is delayed until the cam has rotated enough to release the lock, as seen in fig. 7.
While face 55 engages a high point of cam 56, another high point engages and retains a face 58 of lever 38 to thereby relieve pressure from extension 48 on latch 49, thereby releasing pressure from extension 48 on latch 49. that, when the lock is released, as in fig. 7, it can quickly switch under the influence of an electromagnet, which only has to overcome the. spring force 50.
The lever 38, thus made free to rotate, is nevertheless still prevented from tilting by the upper part of the cam 56, as can be seen in FIG. 7, and a tilting takes place after the cam 56 has continued its rotation to the position it occupies in FIG. 8, where the spring 47 will tilt the lever 38 and move the stopper 36 to bring the free end of the latter in vertical alignment with the punch 29. At this time, the stopper 36 is held in its upper position by the. cam 42 and cam 33 has its lower part, which is
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
circula.ire, in front of the stop, so that there is a passage in which the head of the stop is introduced, as seen in fig. 8.
The pins 57 carrying the cams 56 are actuated from the pins 34 or 20 with a ratio of 1 to 3 by a combined gear designated as a whole by 60 in FIG. 5, so that, for each turn of the cams 33, the cams 56 make a third of a turn.
According to fig. 8, the cam 33 by continuing its rotation will force the head of the stop 36 to descend against the punch 29 and force the latter to pass through the tape 25. Cams 42 rotating in synchronism with the cam 33 leave the punch free to descend and after that act on the arms 45 to withdraw the punch. During this backward movement, the cam 56 acts to bring back the lever 38 and the latch 49.
Fig. 10 shows the coordina.tion of the various cams for a turn of the cam 33 or a step of the ribbons.
At the bottom of the figure is represented the period of excitation of the electromagnet 54 under the control of contacts 04.
Analysis of the diagram shows that, while the electromagnet 54 is energized, the cam 56 first releases the latch 49 at the point indicated and shortly thereafter also releases the lever 38 to allow the. stop 36 to move to a position, where it is interposed. It should be noted in particular that at this moment the cam 42 is in the process of bringing back the punch 29, after a previous punching operation and that this punch is not yet completely returned.
It should also be noted that points 16 and 16a advance the ribbons and that this advance occurs
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
before the cam 33, which is in action, presses on the chosen punch. In other words, a punch is chosen for operation by energizing an electromagnet 54 and triggering a latch 49 and a lever 38 during the period when a previously actuated punch is pulled back and we advance the ribbons.
By means of this overlap in operation, one can obtain higher operating speeds, since the ana. lysis of the card and the choice of punches do not require a special time for their execution.
In the circuit diagram (fig. 9), contacts designated by C1 and C4 are controlled by cams fixed on the shaft 20, which makes one revolution for each step of the advance of the bands or for each revolution of the bands. cams 33.
For a complete operation of analysis and punching of a recording, an operation which requires twenty-eight cycles, these contacts C1 and 04 will therefore close twenty-eight times, as indicated in FIG. 11.
In the circuit diagram are also shown cam contacts C2, C3 and C5, controlled by cams carried by a pin 62, actuated to make one revolution each time the pin 20 makes twenty-eight. The drive of the axis 62 is represented by pin 5, where it can be seen that the axis 20 drives it by a gear designated as a whole by 63 and by four of the toothed wheels 60, with a ratio of 28 to 1 An axis 64 carrying one of the toothed wheels 63 is provided with a pulley 67, which drives by means of a belt 66 a pulley 65 fixed on the axis of the rewinding coil 18.
Consider setting up a succession of cycles, with brushes 27 placed in the first column of
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
perforations in the three panels (fig. 4), with current supplied to main lines 70 and 71 (fig. 9).
Circuits will be established from line 70, through contacts C5 and C4 and wires' 72 to the three common brushes 27a and rollers 26, and from there through a perforation 12 of tape 10, to brushes 27 and through wires 73 to the electromagnets 54 and to the line 71. When the contacts C4 open, the circuit is interrupted, but at the same time the selected stops will be released, so that when the ribbons have been spaced and a cam 42 reaches its full return position, the stops move below cam 33 to be actuated by it. It should be noted that an analysis occurs when a column of the record is in front of the analyzer brushes, and that a punching in response to perforations of this column occurs when the next column is in front of the analyzer brushes.
In other words, the punching of one column occurs while the next is analyzed.
The circuits drawn repeat on paths determined by the position in which holes 12 arrive for each of the various cycles, when contacts C5 open to render further closures of contacts C4 ineffective for the remainder of the succession of twenty. eight cycles.
In fig. 9, three electromagnets 54a choose the stops 36 corresponding to the punches of the propulsion holes, and these are excited by the circuits as follows. C3 contacts close for eight steps or cycles (fig. II), so that eight pulses from C1 contacts energize the electromagnets 54a corresponding to panels 1 and 2 and will be energized to punch through the propulsion holes in them. sixteen first
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
The first positions of the ribbon 25. Contacts 02 close for twelve steps, so that twelve pulses of C1 are sent to the electromagnet 54a corresponding to the panel 3. There are thus produced twenty-eight pulses of propulsion holes to punch the twenty. -eight holes 30 in the tape 25 for recording.
Once the last of these holes is punched, all circuits are inefficient, but the advance continues for sixteen more cycles to bring the first columns of the next record to the analysis position and from that point them. operations are repeated, as has been stated.
