Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

   Pendant la mise en place de l'élément chauffant, cette virole parvient dans la piece cylindrique à paroi per- forée; on glisse cette pièce cylindrioue dans une douille, ,par exemple en cuivre, qui est scellée dans le fond du tube;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

    @

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

  Discharge tube for very high frequencies and method of manufacturing such a tube.

   The invention relates to discharge tubes, in particular tubes provided with planar electrodes and a cathode which has a disoidal emitting part.

   In such tubes, for example cathode ray tubes, concentrated ray tubes, special very short wave tubes etc., the cathode is generally constituted by a discoidal part which is covered with an emitting material and which is fixed perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of a tubular organ. In general, this tubular member in which the cbauffant element is housed serves to fix the cathode in the tube. These cathodes are sometimes classified, according to their shape, into pot-shaped cathodes, and mushroom-shaped cathodes. The discoidal emitting part must not

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 not necessarily be flat, it can be convex, concave, conical or even be profiled.

   The invention further relates to a method of manufacturing such a tube.

   In the manufacture of tubes with flat electrodes which must include such a cathode with an emitting discoidal part arranged at a very small distance from a flat grid, the mounting of the electrodes gives rise to difficulties. In general, after its installation, such a cathode was preferably welded by its cylindrical part to one or more support rods. This may however cause the rods to deform and therefore modify the spacing of the cathode and the grid so that it is impossible to adjust this spacing in advance.

   In a discharge tube according to the invention, a tube whose electrode system comprises one or more plane electrodes and a cathode with a discoidal emitting part, this drawback is obviated by the fact that the cathode is mounted on a part. cylindrical, one wall of which is formed, at least partially, by perforated metal and that this part is fixed to a metal tube sealed in the wall of the tube.

   Such a construction makes it possible to obtain very precise assembly in a very simple manner. After bending a strip of perforated sheet metal, the top of the cylindrical part obtained is covered, by a cathode with a flat emitting surface, the :? perforations provided for in. lower part of the wall, for example by laminating this substance, in powder form, in the perforations and possibly sealing it in these openings. The heating insulation power conductors can be hermetically sealed in a metal ferrule using a glass bead.

   During the installation of the heating element, this ferrule enters the cylindrical part with a perforated wall; this cylindrical part is slid into a socket, for example made of copper, which is sealed in the bottom of the tube;

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 sliding takes place with a certain amount of friction.

   The perforated wall of the cylindrical part is somewhat slender, so that the friction on the sleeve is obtained very easily, for example, by slightly modifying the dimensions of the cylindrical part by exerting a tension or a compression, which decreases. or increases its diameter. Using a microscope, for example, it is then possible to bring the emitting surface of the cathode strictly to the required distance from the first grid; it suffices to move the cylindrical part in the sealed sleeve accordingly. The end of the cylindrical part protruding from the tube is heated; the weld or enamel flows from the openings and hermetically welds the perforated wall to the sealed sleeve as well as to the ferrule.

   The perforated wall will preferably be made of an extensible material, such as sheet metal in which small incisions are made, of which, by extension of the sheet, openings are formed. This cylindrical piece of perforated metal is also of essential importance in reducing the heat conduction of the cathode. In addition, the outer edge of the discoidal emitting part of the cathode can be surrounded with a cylinder of thin foil, to reduce heat radiation from the thermal element. If this sheet is very thin, it will only slightly affect the heat loss by conduction.

   The description which will follow with reference to the appended drawing, given by way of non-limiting example, will clearly show how the invention can be implemented, the particularities which emerge both from the text and from the drawing, of course being part of said invention.

   In the figure, 1 is the bulb of the tube in which the discoidal electrodes are sealed, namely an anode 2 and a grid 3, for example using metal flanges.

    @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 The cathode, which has at its upper part a distal part 4 covered with an emitting material 5, is mounted on a tubular part 6, in which is fixed the insulated heating element 7. The supply wires 8 of this heating element are hermetically sealed using a glass bead 9, in a metal shell 10 with a solid wall; ferrule is arranged in the lower part of a cylindrical part 11 according to the invention. This part 11, with a perforated wall, is fixed by means of welds 15, in the copper sleeve 13 which is sealed in the bottom of the tube 12. This weld 15 also hermetically assembles the part 11 to the ferrule 10.

   Instead of soldering, you can also use enamel. The essential purpose of the ferrule 10 is to allow the hermetic mounting of the glass bead 9, because otherwise, during the sealing of the conductors 8 in this bead, the solder or the enamel would already be brought to fusion. Around the upper end of the part 11, a foil 14 can be wound to reduce the heat radiation of the tubular part 6 and the resistance to high frequency currents. The ferrule 10 can be closed by a ceramic plug 16, which protrudes from the tube.

   The cathode is placed in the tube as follows. After the introduction of the cathode and the tubular part 6 into the cylindrical part 11, and the fixing of this cathode, for example by clamping or welding, the ferrule 10, in which the heating element 7 is already attached, to the using the conductors 8 and the bead 9, is slid into the cylindrical part 11 so that the heating element occupies the required place. The assembly is then slipped into the socket 13; to obtain the required friction between the cylindrical part 11 and the sleeve 13, the cylindrical part is stretched or compressed somewhat.

   Using a microscope, for example, the emitting surface 4 is brought to the required distance from the grid 3, and @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 the solder or enamel introduced in advance into part of the openings of the perforated cylindrical part 11 is brought to fusion.

  The solder or the enamel flows and then hermetically assembles the cylindrical part 11 to the ferrule 10 and to the sleeve 13. The ceramic stopper 16 serves to prevent deformation, during transport and the installation of the connections, of the cathode of the protruding part of the ferrule 10 and of the cylinder 11 and the damage to the glass bead 9. Optionally one of the conductors 8 can be connected to the ferrule 10.

   Although the specification does not describe a specific embodiment of the invention, it goes without saying that one can also use cathodes of a different form, and in addition, the presence of the ferrule serving to remove the conductors from the heating insulation, is by no means essential for the invention.
