<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

phenanthrene-2-carboxylic acids containing an aromatic A ring and their derivatives, such as their ethers-salts, their nitriles and their amides, these acids or their derivatives containing in position 7 a hydrogen atom and in position 1 and 2 of the hydrogen or hydrocarbon radicals and their backbone
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
nuclear additionally containing only a maximum of one double bond, for example octahydrophenanthrene-2-carboxylic acids and their derivatives.
These new hydrophenanthrene-2-carboxylic acids have the following nuclear system which may still contain a double bond in the B ring or in the C ring.
EMI2.1
The hydrocarbon radicals which are attached in position 1 and 2 are primarily radicals of the aliphatic series, such as alkyl radicals, for example methyl, ethyl or propyl, alkenyl radicals, for example allyl, or alkinyl radicals, for example ethinyl, or alternatively aralkyl radicals, for example benzyl.
A subject of the present invention is also a process for preparing these hydrophenanthrene-2-carboxylic acids and their derivatives, characterized in that the substituent in position 7 of hydrophenanthrene-2-carboxylic acids is eliminated, the ring of which is A is aromatic or of their derivatives, these acids or derivatives containing in position 7 a removable substituent and, in position 1 and 2, hydrogen or hydrocarbon radicals, the nuclear system of these acids or derivatives containing on the other hand still at most
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
a double bond.
The substituent removable in position 7 may be, for example, a free hydroxyl group or a substituent convertible into a hydroxyl group, for example a hydroxyl group in which the hydrogen atom is substituted, an aminogenic group or a halogen atom.
Removal of free or substituted hydroxyl groups, for example hydroxyl groups esterified with aliphatic or aromatic acids, such as acetic acid, propionic acid or benzoic acid, or etherified with alipaatic alcohols or aromatics such as methanol, ethanol or benéyl alcohol, is carried out for example by reduction, in particular by catalytic hydrogenation in the presence of a catalyst containing a heavy metal and alkaline or alkaline-earth bases, those that the sodium, potassium or calcium hydroxide, under more or less strong hydrogen pressure and at higher or higher temperatures.
When the starting materials still contain a double bond, in particular between the 11 and 12 positions, this bond can be saturated by hydrogen attachment during the reduction involved in the process. Removal of an aminogenic group is achieved, for example, by diazotization and boiling treatment, and removal of a halogen atom by reduction.
According to a variant of the present process, it is possible to
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
obtaining hydrophenanthrene-2-carboxylic acids and their derivatives by removing the keto group from 1-ketohydrophenanthrene-2-carboxylic acids whose ring A is aromatic and from their derivatives, these acids or these derivatives containing in position 7 a hydrogen atom and, in position 2, a hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbon radical, the nuclear system .; of these acids or of these derivatives containing on the other hand still at most one double bond, optionally by hydroagenating the ethylenic double bonds and by introducing the radical of a hydrocarbon in position 2.
The elimination of the ketoric group is carried out, for example, by means of nascent hydrogen, obtained electrolytically or biochemically, or by means of catalytically activated hydrogen, or by reaction with an organic metal compound.
Well suited orgaro-metallic compounds are, for example, crganomagnesium halides and alkali alkaline or alkaline compounds. By inaction on an organic metal compound, there is introduced in position 1, with the formation of a tertiary carbinol, a hydrocarbon radio ± ', for example an alkyl radical such as a methyl, ethyl or propyl radical, an alkenyl radical. , such as an allyl radical, an alkinyl radical, such as an ethinyl radical, or an aralkyl radical, such as a banzyl radical.
The tertiary hydroxyl group formed during this reaction is then removed from the tertiary carbinols formed, possibly after
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
reduction of multiple bonds present in side chains.
If it is desired to further introduce the radioal of a hydrocarbon in position 2 of the hydrophenanthrene-2-carboxylic acids obtained or of their derivatives, they are reacted with a corresponding halide in the presence of triphenyl-methylsodium.
Another embodiment of the present process is characterized in that 1- (3 ', 4'-dihydronaphthyl-II) -butanes containing in position 3 a free carboxylic group or a functional derivative of a carboxylic group is cyclized, as well as a hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbon radical, in position 4 an oxy or oxo group, as well as hydrogen and / or hydrocarbon radicals, and in position 6 of the naphthyl radical, a hydrogen atom, and hydrogen, where appropriate, the compounds obtained.
The butane chain of the starting compounds defined above contains in position 3, in addition to the free carboxylic group or the functional derivative of a carboxylic group, for example a nitrile or amide group or in particular an ether-salt group, a d atom. 'hydrogen or a hydrocarbon radical, for example an alkyl radical, such as a methyl, ethyl or propyl radical, an alkenyl radical, such as an allyl radical or an aralkyl radical, such as a benzyl radical.
If the chain contains an oxy group in position 4, it does not
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
do not form a new double bond during the cyclization of the present process. On the contrary, when compounds containing an oxo group in position 4 are employed, a new double bond occurs upon ring closure by simultaneous or subsequent dehydration of the primary condensation product. After the ring-closing reaction, these double bonds are optionally hydrogenated, as well as other double bonds, for example those which originate from unsaturated hydrocarbon radicals attached to the butane side chain, or SE! possibly between positions II and 12 of the phenanthrene skeleton.
As agents causing the closure of the nucleus, concentrated inorganic acids, such as sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid or hydrofluoric acid or mixtures of these acids and, in addition, chlorides of phosphorus, such as phosphorus oxychloride, or oxides of phosphorus, such as phosphorus pentoxide, alone or in the presence of suitable solvents, such as crystallizable acetic acid, ether or benzene.
Another variant making it possible to obtain hydrophenanthrene-2-carboxylic acids defined above and their derivatives, is characterized: in that 3,4-dihydro- 1-ethenyl- or 3,4-dihydro- 1-ethinyl-naphthalenes containing a hydrogen atom in position 6, on monocarboxylic acids [alpha] = ss unsaturated or on their derivatives, and, if the products
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
obtained contain two double bonds in the rings B and C, to hydrogenate at least one of these double bonds.
As unsaturated α - ss monocarboxylic acids, mention will be made, for example, of E.crylic, methacrylic, crotonic, isocrotonic, angelic, l.iglic, α - [gamma] -dimethylcrotonic, [alpha] -methyl-ss- acids. vinyl-acrylic, propiolic, and ss-ethylpropiolic and their derivatives, such as their nitriles, their amides and their ethers-salts.
The diene synthesis according to the present process is carried out in the absence or in the presence of solvents, such as benzene, toluene, xylene, acetic acids, propionic or butyric acids, at a higher or lower temperature, the if necessary in the presence of inert gases such as nitrogen.
Finally, the compounds of the present invention can also be obtained by reacting 3,4-dihydro-1-ethenyl-naphthalene containing a hydrogen atom in position 6, with propiolic acid or on its derivatives and by hydrogenating with minus one of the two newly formed double bonds.
This diene synthesis with propiolic acid or its derivatives is carried out in a manner analogous to that which has been described for the embodiment: one above of the present process,
When compounds are obtained by the reactions described, the carboxylic group of which is in the form of a functional derivative, this group can be converted into a carboxy group.
