<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"Optical observation and lighting apparatus intended for medical and technical use",
The object of the present invention is an optical illumination and observation apparatus which is intended primarily for dentists, to enlarge their reduced field of operation and little
1 'accessible, and to / illuminate at the same time using cooled light, directed and not producing shadow, sense dazzling the patient or irritating the eye of the dentist, and without interfering with the latter, during the treatment , in the handling of instruments.
The present optical observation and illumination apparatus consists of a magnifying optic for observing the field of operation, which provides a suitable magnification so that the eye can effortlessly observe all the details of the eye.

field of operation, and which has a focal length large enough to allow treatment with instruments without difficulty.
Around this magnification optic is arranged in a crown a lighting apparatus, which is housed in a frame in the form of a smooth box and therefore easy to maintain aseptic.
The complete appliance is fixed in a cantilever manner using a fixing arm and a ball joint, to an articulated arm, and therefore allows the use of both hands for the dentist, during processing.
The device is adjusted using a handle fitted with a sterilized metal sleeve, this handle located opposite the fixing arm.
The apparatus is characterized in that the converging lenses are united by sectors and are constructed to be adjusted in such a way that the light cones of the different lighting sectors can be directed with the aid of a mechanical focus adjustment. on the operating field or the object, and that they can be concentrated there more or less while simultaneously the eye observes through the magnifying optics and with the help of the concentrated light the operating field or the object appearing larger, or alternatively that the cones of concentrated light from all lighting sectors can diffuse the operating field or object.
The optical observation and lighting equipment can be used in two ways:
This apparatus is primarily intended for use as an observation reflector, which means that when used in this way, the dentist's eye observes the field of view simultaneously through the lens. magnification optics and concentrated and directed light.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The illumination rays are arranged in this case parallel to the observation axis, that is to say along the line which connects the eye to the observed object, and the result is ideal illumination and without shadows of the operating field, which is further enlarged thanks to the optics.
The apparatus can then be used as an illumination reflector, which means that when the apparatus is used in this way, during the treatment, the cone of light is disposed laterally to the dentist's head. at least illuminating the operating field with diffused light, as also occurs with other reflectors.
Figure 1 shows on a smaller scale the side of the optical observation and lighting apparatus directed towards the patient.
Figure 2 shows on a larger scale the mechanism in the upper part of the handle for common adjustment of all converging illumination lenses together with the light filters.
Figure 3 shows on a larger scale a horizontal section of the handle and said mechanism, which can be adjusted by means of a circular shaft arranged at the rear of the lighting tubes and whose two ends end in racks, the converging lenses united in several sectors, together with the light filters.
Figure 4 shows a section through the optical observation and illumination apparatus taken along line 1-1 of Figure 1.

observation and lighting optics in the form of a table model, mainly intended for technical purposes.
Figure 8 shows in elevation an arrangement for the automatic cooling by compressed air of the lighting apparatus.
The optical observation and lighting apparatus comprises a stand 1, Figures 5,6, 7, to which is connected an articulated arm 2, from which is suspended, by means of at least one ball joint 15, Figures 5,6, 7, the optical observation and lighting apparatus. In the center of the latter is an optical magnification system 8 and around it is arranged in the shape of a crown a lighting device 6,13, 14,16, which is housed in an annular frame 3 partially mobile and adjustable.
Opposite the fixing arm 4 is the handle 5 with the metal sleeve which can be made aseptic for the handling of the apparatus, and with the help of this handle the apparatus can be easily adjusted so that 'it is directed towards the field of operation or the object to be examined. In addition, at the top of the handle which is firmly connected to the frame, is the focus mechanism of the lighting fixture, Figure 2, Figure 3, and on the rear side is a switch / shown in the drawing, for switching on and off with electric current.
The lighting device is adjusted as follows:
The converging lenses 14 arranged side by side around the magnification optical system 8 are grouped into four to eight movable sectors, which can pivot around the lighting tubes. Opposite to the converging lenses, the annular elastic shaft 7, Figure 2 and Figure 3, slides through the securing tabs of the sectors, which surround the bushings
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
lighting tubes, the two ends of the shaft 7 having the form of racks 7a, which are engaged with a longitudinal toothed axis 9 and which can move in both directions on this toothed axis during adjustment.
This toothed axis is rotated by means of a transmission system 10 with the aid of a focusing wheel 11 which emerges from the housing of the handle, and thus we will pivot and adjust the convoy lontilles " entes.
This pivoting movement of the converging lens sectors can also take place using gear transmissions of a different kind.
The magnifying optical system for viewing the operating field or the object is attached to the inner part of the frame 12 which houses the lighting apparatus.
At the front of the horizontal lighting tubes 6 are converging lenses 14, aligned, and between the lighting tubes and the converging lenses are filters 13 made of special glass, intended by the absorption of certain elements. rays to present the field of operation in natural colors.
Behind the light tubes are silver mirror reflectors 16, which reflect the light in the direction of the operating field and thus strengthen it.
The electric current supply to the lighting tubes takes place through the part of the hollow rod system of the stand 1, the fixing arm 4 and the articulated arm 2 which also passes through the fresh air of the automatic air cooling system. - award-winning.
During prolonged use of the observation and lighting apparatus, so as not to disturb either the patient or the attending physician by the heating effect of the lighting tubes surrounding the optical enlargement system in a circle, the appliance is fitted with automatic compressed air cooling which, when the lighting is switched on, automatically produces a current of air with the aid of an electric compressed air fan. the inter-

laughing of the frame in which the occloirofje tubes are located, in order to cool them.
For this purpose, there is housed in: - 'the lower part of the stand 1 an electric compressed air fan 16, Figure 8, which, when the lighting is switched on, is started automatically and which expels air. 'air through the hollow foot of the stand 1 and the hollow rod of the articulated arm ?, and of the fixing arm 4, the joints of which are avoided by means of tubes 17, this air passing through and, consequently, cooling the frame lighting tubes.
The used hot air is returned through the hollow rods of the fixing arm 4 and of the articulated arm 2, the hollow interior of which is Separated into two parts for the fresh air and the outlet air, again avoiding the ball joint using a short tube 18, and escapes near the joint through the opening 19 which is located between the articulated arm 2 and the stand 1.
The optical observation and illumination apparatus can be attached arbitrarily by means of an articulated arm to a stand attached to the dentist's operating chair or directly to an operating unit. .
But the preferred method of attachment is probably attachment to the dentist's operating chair itself via the intermediary / stand, so that the stand is secured to the sputum bowl attachment system, possibly at the same time as this, and thus automatically accompanies the ascent or descent of the operating chair.
