 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

  Improvements to household drum rasps.

   The present invention relates to household rasps comprising, in a known manner, a magazine intended to contain the material to be grated and mounted oscillating at the end of a handle, a rotary drum forming a rasp, integral with a crank and closing the outlet of said magazine and un.poussoir articulated on the handle and penetrating inside the magazine so as to press against the drum the material to be grated contained in the magazine.

   The improvements made in accordance with the invention to rasps of the aforementioned type relate in particular to the known embodiment in which the rotary drum is journaled in a support formed by

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 a lower cradle and the lower edge of the magazine, and more particularly aim at locking the rotary drum in the operating position.

   In accordance with one characteristic of the invention, the locking of the oscillating magazine, in the operating position, is ensured by elements forming a stop and coming into action as soon as the pusher is engaged in the magazine.

   According to another characteristic of the invention, the locking elements are integral with the pusher and / or the lever which carries it.

   The store being articulated in such a way that its opening movement takes place outwards, the locking element is constituted, in accordance with one embodiment of the invention, by the pusher itself which cooperates with a interior wall of the store.

   The magazine being articulated in such a way that its opening movement takes place towards the handle, the locking element is constituted, in accordance with another embodiment of the invention, by heels or other integral parts of the carrying lever. the pusher and cooperating with an exterior face of the store.

   Two embodiments of the invention are shown by way of example in the appended drawing in which: FIG. 1 shows an elevational view of a rasp according to the invention in the open position (solid lines) and in the operating position (phantom lines).

   Fig. 2 is a comprehensive view.

   Fig. 3 is a plan view.

   Fig. 4 is an elevational view thereof with part in section taken along the line IV-IV of FIG. 3, the rasp being assumed to be in the operating position and the pusher at the limit switch.

   Fig. 5 is a similar ocellated view of FIG. 3 showing a variant of the rasp according to the invention,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 and Fig. 6 shows it in the operating position.

   The rasp shown in Figs. 1 to 4 comprises a handle formed by a metal wire 1 shaped as shown in FIG. 3 and reinforced by a sheet metal plate 2. The front end of this wire is bent so as to form a cradle
3 constituting the lower part of the support intended to receive the rotary drum 11, the flanges 11a of which oppose any lateral movement.

   On the rear part of the metal wire 1 constituting the handle is articulated, at 4, a lever 5, the front end of which carries in a known manner the curved pusher 6 intended to engage in the magazine 8 to apply pressure. on the material to be grated.

   The magazine 8 containing the materials to be grated is articulated at 7 on the front part of the metal wire constituting the cradle 3. It should be noted that the articulation 7 extends substantially over the entire width of the magazine 8, so as to provide guidance. perfect during the oscillation movement thereof.

   The lateral lower edge 9 of the magazine 8 is shaped so as to constitute the upper part of the support in which the drum 11 is journaled, which is guaranteed not to move sideways by the flanges 11a. To this end, the edge 9 is reinforced by ribs 10 preferably formed by stamping.

   The rear wall of the magazine 8 has at its middle part a vertical slot 13 into which the front end of the lever 5 penetrates when the pusher 6 engages in the magazine 8 (see FIG. 4). The assembly is arranged in such a way that the rear edge 6a of the pusher 6 moves in close proximity to the inner face of the rear wall of the magazine 8, on the one hand, and that in the final position of the pusher 6, this edge 6a is located at a level substantially above the plane of the joint 7.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

   Thanks to this arrangement, when the magazine 8 is in the operating position shown in FIGS. 1 and 4, the edge 6a cooperating with the rear wall of the magazine 8 forms a stop preventing the magazine 8 from pivoting around the articulation 7 so as to lock it in the operating position. The lower edge 5a of the arm 5 carrying the pusher 6, moreover, comes fully up to the bottom of the slot 13 (FIG. 4) and constitutes an additional locking.

   The operation of the device is obvious. In the disassembled state, for example for cleaning, the elements of the rasp occupy the position shown in FIG. 1. In this position, the magazine 8 is folded outwards, the rotary drum 11 is removed, and the lever 5 carrying the pusher 6 is lifted so as to make accessible the inside of the angle formed by this lever and the handle.

   To put the rasp back into working order, the rotary drum 11 is placed on the cradle 3. It should be noted that the drum can be arranged either so that its crank 12 is on the right or on the left (position 12a in dotted lines ) which makes it possible to use the rasp by a right-handed or a left-handed person.

   When the drum 11 is in place, the magazine 8 is folded over the latter according to FIG. 4 so as to enclose the drum in its support formed by the cradle 3 and the lower edge 9 of the magazine 8, the axial movement of the drum being prevented by side flanges 11a.

   The material to be shredded being placed in the magazine, it suffices to engage the pusher 6 in the upper opening of the magazine 8 by pivoting the lever 5. By this movement, the front part of the lever 5 engages in the slot 13 mena- gée in the rear wall of the magazine 8. At the same time, the edge 6a of the pusher 6 is placed behind the rear wall of the magazine 8 so as to prevent any pivoting of the latter around the articulation 7. It emerges from what precedes, that

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

   @ the engagement of the pusher 6 in the magazine 8 automatically locks the latter in the operating position without it being necessary to provide additional means or to carry out particular locking maneuvers.

   This locking is maintained from the start of operation until complete exhaustion of the material contained in the magazine 8, the members occupying at the end of operation the positions shown in FIG. 4.

   Figs. 5 and 6 show a variant in which the magazine 8 is articulated so as to be able to pivot towards the handle.

   In this embodiment, the magazine 8 is articulated by means of two tabs 14 on the cradle 3 so as to be able to swing towards the handle. The lever 5 carrying the pusher 6 comprises at its front part and at a short distance from the rear edge of the pusher 6, heels 15, the assembly being arranged in such a way that the rear wall 16 of the magazine 8 is trapped between the rear edge of the pusher 6 and the heels 15 as soon as the pusher 6 is engaged in the magazine 8 and the front part of the lever 5 enters the vertical slot 13. The anterior edge 6b of the pusher 6 also forms a stop d stop opposing any tilting of the front wall of the store.

   The operation of this embodiment is similar to that which has been explained in relation to the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to 4. To dismantle the rasp, the lever 5 is raised so as to release the pusher 6 from the magazine 8 which allows the latter to be folded down to the handle, thus freeing the drum 11 which can then be removed.

  To reassemble the rasp, we proceed in reverse order. In this embodiment the crank of the drum can be placed either on the right (position 12 in Fig. 5) or on the left (position 12a in phantom), as in the previous embodiment.
