<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"Device for centering and locking a bicycle wheel".
The present invention relates to a device comprising an external cam controlled by a small lever by means of which the locking of the axis of the rear wheel and even of the front wheel of the bicycle is determined. The shape of the cam is established in such a way as to produce the centering of the axle by closing the slot in the fork while exerting the necessary locking. The cam is contained in a special housing or half-housing which naturally comprises a notched opening for the passage of the axis, this opening being capable of accompanying the cam by elasticity effect both in the opening phase and in the closing one, facilitating in the first the extraction of the axis of the wheel through the opening of the cam

which is free.
The device forming the subject of the invention also comprises other details as regards the mounting and the adjustment of the position on the flange of the fork in order to allow the possible adjustment of the chain when it comes to of the rear wheel, these details being described below with reference to the appended drawing relating to an embodiment of the invention given by way of non-limiting example. In the drawing: FIG. 1 is a side view of the device applied to the flange of the fork of the rear wheel, FIG. 2 is a side view of the device, fig.3, an interior view, figs.4,5 and 6 are, respectively, a front view and a plan view and a section along VI-VI fig. 4 of the housing which contains the cam.
Figs. 7 and 8 are, respectively, a front view and a side view of the cam with its control lever sectioned off for lack of space, FIG. 9 is a section of the device along the line IX-IX fig.3 and finally, fig.10 shows the axis of the wheel with its end nut that can be locked in the desired position, with part of the hub.
If we refer to the drawing, we see that P designates the normal flange of the rear fork of the bicycle while F indicates the usual slot in which the axle of the wheel is inserted.
According to the invention, opposing notches 1,1 'are made on the sides of the slot F between which, depending on the chain tension adjustment, the turned tooth of a plate 2 provided with a, is engaged. hole for the passage of a screw 3 which is screwed into a corresponding thread provided in the inner wall
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
top 4 of a steel sheet box folded in a stirrup, as can be seen more specifically in figs. 5.6 and 9.
This housing has both on its inner wall 4 and on its outer wall 5 an opening 6 for the passage of the axis R of the wheel while the lower wall 4 has teeth obtained by stamping and indicated at 7 and 8, the first tooth 7 having a width equal to that of the opening F of the fork in order to prevent any oscillation of the housing, while the teeth 8 in turn engage in the notches 1 and 1 'to better protect the together against any sliding of the case, this movement being already thwarted by the presence of the plate 3.
The outer wall 5 of the casing has an edge 9 turned inwards so as to form two arcs of a circle, one upper and the other lower, intended to receive and guide in rotation the front cam 10. which, for this purpose, has a semi-circular shape which is extended by two more or less parallel branches 10 'which form a central fork for the passage R of the hub of the wheel. This axis abuts against the bottom in a semicircle of the opening itself, as seen in fig. 7. The cam 10 rests its flat rear face against the inner wall 4 of the housing while its face has a double helical inclined plane in front is engaged against the outer wall 5 of the housing.
This double helical plane is provided so that the front surface of the cam has the minimum thickness which corresponds to the tips of the branches 10 ', this thickness gradually decreasing to the middle part of the central arched part.
The yoke-shaped housing 4,5 is made of an elastic material, preferably hardened steel, and has an elbow 12 which connects the above two parts 4 and 5 in a resilient manner. Face 5 of the part is inclined towards face 4 by construction and it becomes parallel: to this face when the cam, taking the blocking position, moves outwards
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
this face 5. During the reverse maneuver, to unlock the axle of the wheel, the wall 5 returns to its initial position as a result of its elasticity, releasing the axle and making it easier to dismantle.
A nut 13, preferably a blind nut, is screwed onto the end of the axle R of the wheel, which is fixed in the desired position by means of a pressure or stop screw 14. The favorable position of the nut 13 is that where the nut is located at a distance, by its base, by a determined distance H with respect to the locking nut of the hub N of the wheel, this distance corresponding to the sum of the thicknesses that the flange P of the fork comprises, the walls 4 and 5 of the cam housing and the thickness of the cam itself before it is moved to the maximum lift position.
In this way, by moving the cam to the minimum raised position of the elastic wall 5 of the housing (in which the cam is placed so that its slot is in alignment with that of the housing and with the opening. F of the fork flange) the R axle of the wheel can be mounted and removed freely.
During the assembly operation when the axle of the wheel has been pushed into the slot F of the fork, the cam being in the position indicated above, if this cam is rotated by means of of the lever 15 with which it is fitted, the slot of the cam moves from the aforementioned alignment position and the outer branch of the fork of the cam closes the window.
P te F of the flange / fork of the frame while, simultaneously the inclined planes or ramps of the cam force the housing to open, i.e. the wall 5 of the housing is forced outwards until it bears against the base of the nut 13 while the flange P reacts against the nut 14, the whole remaining perfectly locked.
If the R axis has not been fully inserted into the slot, the cam ensures its exact centering, the reaction
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
tion of this movement of the axis being supported by the folded edges 9 of the housing which at the same time constitute the guides of the cam. Of course, the housing, by means of its connection to the flange P, then transmits the thrust on this flange.
Appropriate stops limit the maximum stroke of the cam in both opening and blocking directions.
In general, the device can be used in duplicate, that is to say one for each side of the axle when a normal bicycle axle is used, so that the device can be applied also on bicycles already in use. use ; it can also be applied on only one side but in this case, it is necessary to use a hollow axle of a bicycle wheel to allow the passage of the locking rod or pin actuated on one side by the device object of the present invention.
In the example above, the device has been described as being applied to the axle of the rear wheel of a bicycle; however, as already pointed out, it can be applied with the same advantages to the front wheel with the additional simplification which results from the fact that it is now unnecessary to provide the adjustment indicated for the chain tension.
For these applications to the front wheels, it is possible to provide a simple housing comprising only the outer wall 5 made elastic with respect to its anchoring to the means for fixing on the fork flanges.
Of course, it is possible to modify the construction details of the device with respect to what has been described above by way of example, without departing from the scope of the invention.
