Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  Process for ensiling plant products.

   The invention relates to the silage of plant products according to the usual method of lactic fermentation.

   In the silage of bulky products there is the serious disadvantage that the mass before it settles, engenders large quantities of air, which causes a defective development of the lactic fermentation, resulting in losses of sugar which is not converted to lactic acid.

   By adding large amounts of liquid, it is possible from the start of the treatment to expel the air from the mass; This principle has also been recommended to improve the ensilage process, the surface of the liquid thus formed being generally isolated by means of a layer of oil.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   It is also known to use for silage an already acidic liquid which directly reduces the pH of the mass, which promotes the regular course of lactic fermentation.

   Although the measures already proposed can be of great help, filling a silo before it can be covered takes a long time.

   The object of the invention is to obviate this drawback.

  For this purpose, according to the invention, large quantities of an acidified liquid are added only during the period of filling the silo and the liquid is periodically removed, in order to allow the vegetable mass to settle.

   By applying the process according to the invention, the settling of the bulky vegetable mass will occur very quickly, as soon as the liquid is removed. This is because an acidic liquid quickly decays the tissues of plants, so that for example with green grass there is already a considerable descent within 24 hours after the elimination of the acidic liquid.

  EXAMPLE -
A silo is half-filled with green grass and a quantity of an acidic liquid having a pH of about 3.9 is added to it, so as to submerge the mass. After 24 hours the liquid is evacuated by means of a pump and the grass is trampled or compressed, which causes it to descend rapidly. It then contains very little air. In this way the volume of a young herb is reduced after 24 hours to about a third of its original volume at the time of filling. Then grass is introduced again into the silo and acidic liquid is added, which is removed after 24 hours, the newly introduced herb is compressed again.

   In this way we can

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 completely fill a silo within, for example, 6 days; the silo is then closed by means of the usual layer of earth, after the acidic liquid has been definitively removed.

   This filling process has the advantage that the silo does not have to be covered with a piece of weight and that the covering soil layer does not descend considerably.

   The acidic liquid removed before it can be added again, must be brought to a pH of around 3.9, which can be done by adding a little sugar or a little mineral acid, sugar being converted quickly to lactic acid.

  The quantities of sugar and / or acid which are necessary for this purpose are extremely small, because the silage mass itself produces a biologically acidified liquid, which is sufficient for preservation, because, thanks to the exclusion from the air at the start of the treatment and the immediate reduction of the pH, such a correct development of the lactic fermentation is obtained that the quantity of sugar contained in the vegetable mass is almost completely converted into lactic acid. For this reason the acidic liquid is readjusted from time to time by the addition of small amounts of acid or sugar, for example in the form of molasses. Said liquid can be stored for several months under a layer of oil, to be used again in the following ensilage period.

   The process according to the invention therefore requires only very small quantities of additional materials.
