Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 l'invention.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

  Manufacturing process for tubular lubricating bearings or hubs such as those used in rotary switches used in automatic telephony
This invention relates generally to the bearings: and the hubs as well as the methods for producing them and more particularly a hub or bearing intended to support a rotating part and having a space inside it is permanently retained. a certain amount of grease or other lubricant between the moving parts relative to each other.

   One of the features of the invention relates to the new method making it possible to produce the lubricant reservoir inside the bearing or hub to retain the grease or oil between the hub and the shaft on which it rotates.

   This new process uses hydraulic pressure to shape the hub or bushing by creating a flaring of the central portion of the tubular blank and then reducing the outer portion of the bulge to the same size as the rest of that blank.

   A peculiarity of the hub or bearing thus established is the presence of a space or a cavity on its central inner part intended to receive the lubricant so that it can be mounted on a shaft of uniform diameter over its entire length. rotation.

   The invention is illustrated here by taking as an example

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 a hub designed to be used as a support for the rotating member or the ratchet wheel of a jerk switch such as the rotary switches used in automatic telephone systems. In this switch, a fixed shaft supports a hub which rotates on it and which carries a set of flexible brushes which, by moving, establish contact with various pads arranged in an arc of a circle.

   A ratchet wheel is attached to the hub, on which alter acts. natively a magnetic ratchet to turn the hub on its shaft.

   In the prior art, a space was provided inside the hub to accommodate the lubricant by hollowing out a part of the material of which the shaft was made. But not only did this process weaken the shaft near its center, but it also weakened the shaft. gave it a tendency to buckle, which resulted in the two ends of the shaft not being properly aligned.

   The characteristic of the present process consisting in forming the location for the lubricant reserve by enlarging a part of the hub, on the contrary, leaves the shaft intact, its diameter remaining the same over its entire length, and thus eliminates any cnance of warping. The special tools and the special dies as well as the mode of disposal ae ae out of the tuoe during its filling with a non-compressible liquid also constitute features of the invention.

   In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 relates to the first stage of the method of sheltering a hub or bearing coniorme in the invention, consisted in cutting to the required length a tube previously manufactured without welding.

   Fig. 2 relates to the second stage during which the tubt e: rectified externally to remove all the defects

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

Fig. 3 shows a section ae each end, at 31 and 32, of the tube 12, which are bored to remove all the defects of these parts which will form the bearings of the completed hub.

   Fig. 4 shows the start of the operation consisting of temporarily obstructing one end of the tube 12 with the aid of a plug 41 which fits firmly thereto.

   Fig. 5 shows the tube 12 held in the wedge position while the stopper 41 is pushed into position. Before proceeding from the operation shown in fig. 5 to that shown in FIG. 6, the tube 12 is filled with a liquid 64 by a special process and with the aid of a special device, shown in FIG. 11.

   Fig. 6 shows the tube 12 with its central part E enlarged and still maintained in the die 62. The plunger 63 which has been introduced through the upper end of the tube to transmit the pressure to the liquid 64 inside the tube is shown approximately at lowest point of its downward motion.

   Fig. 7 shows tube 12 after it has been removed from die 62 and clamped in a vise over a hole. a tool 72 being used to drive out the plug 41 which was used to seal one of the ends during the flaring operation.

   Fig. 8 highlights the eighth stage of the process, ie the second external rectification operation.

   Fig. 9 shows the second interior bore of the two end parts constituting the ninth stage of the process.

   Fig. 10 shows the last stage which is the external thread of one end of the tube.

   Fig. it represents the reservoir used for the refill. of the tube, prior to the flaring or widening of its central part.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

   Fig. 12 shows the hub 15 mounted with a ratchet wheel 11 on the shaft 10.

   For the construction of the hub or bearing 15 according to the method, object of the invention, a good quality seamless tube (for example of seamless steel or of another suitable material) is chosen having an outer diameter slightly greater than diameter required for the finished hub. the inner diameter of the tube is slightly less than the diameter of the shaft on which the finished hub is to turn. The first operation consists in cutting in the tube a piece of the required length% as shown in 12. When the metal used requires annealing, this must be operated before the first rectification operation shown in fig. 2.

   This is a rectification of the outer surfaces of the tube of the so-called "non-centered" type, that is to say by supporting it between two grinding wheels turned in opposite directions at different speeds in order to eliminate all defects and so that the total length of the tube cut to the required dimension has the same diameter with a very small tolerance of about 5 microns.

   In the third stage which is represented in fig. 3, the inside of tube 12 is bored at each end for about a quarter of its length. This bore must also be executed with a very small tolerance (about 15 microns) the success of the flaring or widening operation depending, in part, on the very tight fit of the plug 41 to one of the ends. the tube and also the plunger 63 which must be introduced at the other end of the tube. In fig. 4,. stopper 41 is shown inserted through one end of tube 12. In FIG. It is assumed that the tube 12 has been placed in a recess in a suitable block of material 51, sufficient force can be exerted on the stopper 41 to force one end of the tube 1a.

   In fig. 6 is shown In section a special die as well as a tube, such as the tube to which refers

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 invention. In this figure, it has been assumed that the flaring operation is finished and that the plunger 63 can be withdrawn. It will be appreciated that the die is a carefully executed tool, used in combination with a common punch or similar pressing tool (not shown). Considerable pressure can be concentrated between the plunger 63 and the table supporting the mandrel (not shown) on which the die 62 is placed. Part 65 is a block of cast iron or machined metal of widely calculated proportions.

   The elements 62, 62 are the two halves of a frustoconical die which can be easily removed and replaced in the element 65. These semi-frustoconical elements are cut in their centers to form a cavity in which a tube can be placed. 12. After these gold semi-frustoconical elements have been brought together and a tube has been placed in the cavity formed between them, they are introduced into a hole made in the cast iron block 65. Three locking tabs 66,67 and 68 are then put in place.

   The elements 62, 62 and the tube to be widened are held in correct position by means of the threads shown and the overlapping shoulders while the plunger 63 descends, its end penetrating into the upper end of the tube 12. Under its action, the plunger non-compressible liquid 64 forces the wall 61 of the tube 12 apart and presses it against the walls of the cavity of the elements 62 of the die. The operation is adjusted so that the plunger 63 can only descend the distance just necessary to produce the required pressure on the liquid, after which the plunger is disengaged.

   This movement is similar to the well-known punch press movement, the downward movement of the plunger 63 for a correct predetermined distance is immediately followed by its return to its top position and the same. We then stop the press while the die

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 is recharged * with another tube 12.

   After the above operation, the tube 12 is withdrawn from the elements 62 of the die and placed in another vice 71 to drive out the tube 12, using a mandrel 72, the stopper 41 which closed its supporting end. the pressure required for the enlargement operation.

   The next stage, highlighted in fig. 6, is a second operation of rectifying the outer walls of tube 12, in which the outer diameter is brought to the dimension of the final diameter, with a very small tolerance at most equal to about 10 microns. It will be noted here that the apparent bulge of the central part of the tube 12 has now disappeared following this last rectification operation, which means that the walls 61 and 61 are thinner than at the start of these operations and that the outside of the tube has the same diameter over its entire length and is ready for the assembly of the brushes fitted with their insulating elements, so as to complete the assembly of the brushes.

   In fig. 9 is shown the following operation in which the two parts 31 and 32 are bored with a tolerance of about 12 microns, these parts of the tube forming the bearing surfaces between the finished hub 15 and the shaft on which it rotates.

   The final operation consists in externally threading a part 16 at one end. The finished hub or cousainet 15 is now complete. It remains to adapt a rock wheel to one dense ends (as shown in fig. 12) by welding or fixing it definitively in any other way.

  In fig. 12, the completed hub 15 is part of the embodiment of a rotary switch in which the shaft 10 is fixed with the hub 15 rotating around it. According to another possible embodiment, the hub 15 could on the contrary be fi e and the rotary shaft 10, supported by the two bearings. 31 and 32 greased loosen both with a lubricant stored at

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 inside the space 9. A second wheel 8 (shown in Fig. 12) is attached to the shaft.

   Another important feature of the invention is the device specially designed to expel air from the tube and fill it with a non-compressible liquid prior to the enlargement or bulging operation. It is of the utmost importance, in fact, to expel all the air from inside the tube before attempting this operation. In 1 fig. Shown is a flashtight reservoir 92 in which the liquid is stored. A pipe 93 connected to the top of the reservoir 92 extends on one side parallel to the base 94 supporting the reservoir 92. The end of the pipe 93 is bent downwards, parallel to the vertical central axis of the reservoir 92.

   The pipe 93 ends with a small caliber tube 95, the outside diameter of which is slightly smaller than that of the bored portions of the ends 31 and 32 of the tube 12. The reservoir 92 is equipped with an air pump (not shown). One of the tubes, such as tube 12, one of the ends of which is plugged as shown in FIG. 5, placed on this tube 95 of small diameter, which measures a sufficient length to descend to the bottom of the cavity inside the tube 12. The air is expelled from the tube 12 when the liquid is there. introduced from the tank through pipe 93-95 by operating the lever of a pump (not shown) attached to the tank 92.

   This is done when the mobile element of the press descends with the plunger 63 to complete the operation of flaring the tube (for example the tube previously filled and placed in the die shown in fig. 6.
