 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

  "Elastic suspension for light motorcycle and motorcycle wheels".

   The present invention relates to an elastic suspension system applicable in particular to motorcycles, and light motorcycles without having to make any changes in their current construction.

   Another object of the invention is that of providing an elastic suspension system without it being necessary to make any modification whatsoever to the frame or to the wheel and which, in addition to the characteristic of great lightness and simplicity of construction , has the advantage of causing the elastically suspended wheel to oscillate in an arc of

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 circle, the center of which is very close to the fulcrum of the brake rod and the chain sprocket, (for the rear wheel) so that, with oscillations of the wheel, there is in substance no , no variation in the radius between the centers of the wheel and sprocket carrying the chain and there is no variation between the fixing point of the brake rods and the point at which the brake is applied.

   Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the description below.

   According to the invention, the objects indicated above, and those which will result during the description, are achieved by means of a device working in substance like a shear with an opposing spring; this device is in fact constituted in practice by an internal fork member oscillating between the branches of an external fork and under the action of a spring, the internal fork being intended to support the wheel while the external fork is fixed to the fork of the motorcycle or light motorcycle where the wheel is usually applied.

   The invention will be better understood from the following description of a practical embodiment illustrated by way of non-restrictive example by the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of an elastic suspension device mounted between the fork and the rear wheel of a motorcycle.

   Figure 2 is a plan view of the same device.

   Figures 3 and 4 show construction details.

   Figure 5 shows in elevation an analogous elastic suspension device for the front wheel of a motorcycle and
Figure 6 is a partial cross section of the device shown in Figure 5.

   With particular reference to Figures 1 to 4, according to the invention the device (shown applied to the rear wheel)

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 consists of a fork-shaped member 5, articulated in the vicinity of the point of union of the two branches of the fork and of two external elements 6, substantially parallel, which, with the oscillating lugs 7, integral with the fork 5, constitute another external fork 6-2-6.

   In the example illustrated, the arms 6 carry on their inner side sleeves 8 in which the ends 2 of the lugs 2 can rotate for a certain angle 2. These ends, in the embodiment illustrated, are partially formed as discs. and partially as sectors.

  On part 9 'is applied a laminated half-spring 10 which, by its end, reacts against the corresponding arm on which it is held by a small stud or similar stop member 11.

   The sleeves 8 (FIG. 3) can also carry an appendage 12 on which is applied a jaw element 13 intended to be fixed to a tube 14 of the frame.

   For the application of the device to the rear wheel of a motorcycle, it suffices to disassemble the wheel of the motorcycle, reassemble it between the arms of the fork 5, as has been clearly illustrated, and then, widening slightly the fork 15 it suffices to apply instead of the wheel the ends of the arms 6, fixing them to the fork by means of studs 16 or by any other suitable means. In this way, the fork-shaped part of the suspension which carries the wheel remains between the mudguard 23 and the tire 24.

   It is obvious that the device thus mounted constitutes an excellent elastic suspension for the wheel which oscillates in an arc of approximately equal radius, and oriented in the same direction, as that of oscillation of the rear end of the chain. and the brake, so that, during oscillation, both the chain and the brake rod are maintained under practically the same tension.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

   As can be appreciated by examining Figure 4 in the sleeve 8, between the disc-shaped part and the bottom of the sleeve, a friction disc 12 can be mounted and one or more friction discs 18 can be mounted. also be mounted on the pivot 19 integral with the disc 2 on which the nut 20 and the locknut 21 are screwed to fix the part to the part 8. These friction discs serve as damping discs.

   Referring particularly to Figures 5 and 6, which show the device applied to the suspension of the front wheel of a motorcycle, the fork of the motorcycle is preferably formed by a pair of tubular uprights 31 with box-shaped lower end. 32 elongated transversely, in profile substantially ellyptic and open inward. A sturdy fork having its arms of length somewhat greater than the radius of the wheel supports at its ends the axis of the front wheel and in its converging part carries two journals 1- opposed and aligned which enter the two boxes 32 and carry two laminated springs 10.

   These springs are attached to the journals 7 using screws 25 and have their free ends which press against the upper walls of the boxes 32 at a point close to the point of connection of the tubular upright 31 of the fork with the box 32. The connection of the journal 2 with the box 32 is produced using a threaded rod 19 forming an appendage of the journal and held in place by the nut 34.

   In this way, a double shear articulated device is produced. in which to the movements of the wheel corresponds an oscillation of the fork 5 rotating on the journal 7, under the action of the spring 10.

   Analogously to the previous case (rear wheel) between the outer wall of the box 32 and the journal 2, it can be

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 inserted on the rod 19 one or more friction discs (not shown) intended to serve as shock absorbers which can be adjusted by tightening the nut 3.

   The assembly of the device for the front wheel is substantially analogous to the assembly which has just been described for the rear wheel.

   It goes without saying that the device according to the invention is capable of numerous variant embodiments, especially when it must be applied to light motorcycles and bicycles.

   Thus, for example, instead of a laminated spring, it is possible, in some cases, to use a coil spring working by compression or by distension or a spiral spring working by torsion mounted in a sleeve member. 8 and fixed by one end to this sleeve and by the other end to the center of rotation or pivot 19. In addition, other shock-absorbing elements or other additional devices can be fitted without causing a variation in the principle of the invention.
