Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

    EXEMPLE 3. -

    EXEMPLE   4.-
On reproduit l'exemple 1 excepté qu'on utilise 5,7 parties d'acide lactique au lieu de l'acide acétique. Le produit obtenu a

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

  Polymerized products and their preparation process.

   The main patent n. 486.101 describes a process for the preparation of novel polymeric polyamines. These polyamines are prepared by reduction in the presence of ammonia or of primary or secondary amines of monoolefin-carbon monoxide polymers.

   The present invention relates to salts of these polymeric polyamines obtained by reacting the polyamines with an acid which may be an organic or inorganic acid. Among the organic acids, the preferred are monocarboxylic acids, especially aliphatic monocarboxylic acids such as saturated alkanoic acids containing from 1 to 17 carbon atoms in the alkane group, of which acetic acid is preferred. However, any acid can be used, including acidic dyes.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   Salts with inorganic or organic acids are conveniently prepared by adding the acid to a bath of molten polymeric polyamine with stirring. Another method is to dissolve the polymeric polyamine in an organic solvent, such as a hydrocarbon solvent, and then add the acid to the solution with stirring. Yet another method is to suspend the polymeric polyamine in a suitable medium and add the acid to the suspension with stirring.

   When one of the latter two methods is applied, the polymeric polyamine salt is separated by removing the solvent or the suspending medium, preferably under reduced pressure. The salt can be freed from any excess acid present by distillation, if the acid is volatile, or by any other known method.

   Since acidic dyes generally exist in the form of sodium salts, their salts of polymeric polyamines are prepared by salt exchange between the acidic dye and a salt of the polymeric polyamine with an acid. This conversion is conveniently carried out by dissolving the polymeric polyamine in a dilute aqueous acid, eg, dilute aqueous acetic acid, and adding the solution to a solution of the dye in water. The salt formed is separated by filtration, washed until it is free from inorganic salt and dried. If the salt of the acid dye does not settle quickly, coagulation can be caused by a short heat treatment.

   The solubility in organic solvents of salts of polymeric polyamines with acid dyes depends on the nitrogen content of the polymeric polyamine used in their preparation. In general, salts with acid dyes prepared using nitrogen-rich polymeric polyamines are poorly soluble in organic solvents. If it is therefore desired to prepare such salts soluble in an organic solvent, it is necessary to use a polymeric polyamine having a C / N ratio.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   between 40: 1 100: 1. Polymeric polyamines have neutralization indices between 700 and 1500. When the neutralization number drops below 700, the solubility of these salts in organic solvents decreases.

   These salts of acid dyes insoluble in organic solvents are very useful as pigments.

   For the preparation of the salts according to the present invention, it is most convenient to use solutions of the polymer polyamines. Suitable solvents are aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene, xylene, isooctane, etc. Solutions containing amounts up to the limit of solubility of polymeric polyamines at ordinary temperatures can be employed. For practical reasons, solutions containing 2-50% solids are generally used.

   For the preparation of salts with inorganic acids and with organic acids, the amount of acid used is at least that which is necessary to provide one equivalent of acid per amino group in the polymer. The amount is determined from the neutralization number of the polymer polyamine. With volatile acids, the use of an excess of acid over the theoretically necessary amount is not critical because the excess can be removed later by distillation. In the case of non-volatile acids, the theoretical amount is preferably used, if it is desired to obtain a neutral salt. If an acidic salt is desired, the theoretical amount of a polybasic acid is used to produce that salt.

   In the case of acid dye salts, the amount of polymeric polyamine used is not critical because the salts are prepared by titration of the amine against the dye and the term is considered to be the point at which the dye is completely precipitated from solution in the form of the polyamine salt.

   Organic acid salts of polymeric polyamines having molecular weights above 1000 are particularly useful because they impart a practical degree of water repellency to textile materials. The solubility of these salts in water and in organic solvents decreases as the molecular weight of the polymeric polyamine increases. The molecular weight range of 1000 to 2000 includes the polymeric polyamines having the best solubility and utility relationships as textile treatment agents. Files therefore correspond to a group of preferred salts.

   The examples which follow serve to illustrate the invention without limiting it. Unless otherwise indicated, parts indicated are parts by weight. The saponification indices given are determined by treating the salts with an amount of alkali titrated in excess of that necessary for the release of the polyamine, then by titrating the excess alkali in return with an acid.

    EXAMPLE 1.-
To 100 parts of a 25% solution in benzene of a polymeric polyamine having a neutralization number of 525.6 parts of glacial acetic acid is added with stirring. The resulting solution is then treated by distillation to separate the benzene and excess acetic acid. 30 parts of a sticky wax-like polyamine salt having a saponification number of 510 were obtained. The product was soluble in water and on analysis gave 2.61% nitrogen. The calculated value for the acetate of an amine having a neutralization number of 525 is 2.39%.

   The polymeric polyamine used in this experiment was prepared as follows:
Into a stainless steel coated pressure reaction apparatus, 400 parts of an ethylene carbon monoxide polymer having a molecular weight of 1480 and a ratio of

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 10.4: 1 molar of ethylene / carbon monoxide, 400 parts of benzene and 40 parts of a nickel catalyst on kieselguhr.

  The apparatus is then closed, a vacuum is made, and 100 parts of anhydrous ammonia are introduced. The reaction apparatus is placed in a stirring machine, and connected to a source of hydrogen under high pressure. The hydrogen expands in the device and you begin to heat and stir. The temperature is raised to 200 C, and the pressure is adjusted to 260 atmospheres. These conditions are maintained for 15 hours. The apparatus is allowed to cool, the excess hydrogen and ammonia are removed and the mixture of solvent, polymeric polyamine and catalyst is discharged from the reaction apparatus. The reaction mixture is diluted with benzene, and filtered to remove the catalyst. Analysis of the solution gives a content of 25% solids by weight.

   The product has a neutralization index of 525 and contains 82.13% carbon, 13.92% hydrogen, 3.12% nitrogen (Dumas method) and 2.61% nitrogen (Van method Slyke).

A wax-like solid body soluble in water is obtained.

  The solubility of the product in water is not affected by standing in air for six weeks.

   5 parts of the acetate salt, prepared as stated above, are dissolved in 92 parts of 1% aqueous acetic acid with heating and stirring. The solution is allowed to cool, and then 3 parts of 37% aqueous formaldehyde solution are added to the cold solution. The monoolefin / carbon monoxide polymers subjected to the reductive amination to obtain the polymeric polyamines used in this invention to produce the novel salts of polymeric polyamines are formed by polymerization of a monoolefin containing up to 4 carbon atoms, such as ethylene, propylene, isobutylene or a number of these monoolefins, with carbon oxide in the presence of a polymerization catalyst, for example a peroxide compound.

   Monoolefin / carbon monoxide polymers contain carbonyl carbon in the chain of contiguous carbon atoms comprising the polymer chain. After the reductive amination of the monoolefin / carbon monoxide polymer, the oxygen of the carbonyl group is replaced by an amino nitrogen group. Thus, polymeric polyamines contain a main chain of carbon atoms and amino nitrogen groups as side substituents, the nitrogen of which is attached directly to a carbon atom which is an integral part of this main carbon chain.

  The polymeric polyamine may also contain a carbonyl carbon in the chain of contiguous carbon atoms comprising the main carbon chain of that polyamine.

   The polyamines from which the salts of the present invention are prepared, are at least 1,4-polyamines, as seen in the formula below:

   Polymeric polyamine salts of the present invention are useful as dispersing agents, fabric treating agents, components of finished products for treating fabrics to impart hydrophobic properties or resistance to shrinkage or both, as binders for pigments, components of drilling muds, components of flame retardants for textiles, dyes soluble in organic solvents for dyeing plastics, textiles, paper, leather, etc., as organic pigments, etc.

   Of course, the invention is not limited to the embodiments specifically described and numerous modifications can be made without departing from its scope.
