Arc welding process.
The invention relates to an arc welding process in which, instead of using a bare welding wire or a coated electrode, an arc is made to shoot directly between the parts to be welded, using a semi body. -conductor sufficiently conductive to ensure the initiation of the arc, which establishes a conductive contact between the parts to be welded kept apart by this body. In this process, the arc is only of short duration and it is important that one of the parts is brought on the other at the required moment.
According to the invention, after the initiation of the arc, the moment at which the pieces to be welded touch each other is determined by the fact that an insulating support, called upon to form the slag, deforms rapidly after the initiation of the slag. bow.

The invention is particularly advantageous for assembling a part, a rod for example, to a larger part, a sheet for example. To this end, in accordance with the invention, the rod is placed on a semiconductor body which, like the surround to be melted from the end of the rod, is introduced into the hollow formed in an insulating support. called to form the slag and the arc begins.
A good assembly by soldering is obtained when the semiconductor body and the insulating support called upon to form the slag are both made of an inorganic mass, degassed beforehand by heating to the sintering temperature. In general, the semiconductor body will also form more or less slag.
As 1 'illustrates the example of execution given below, the ignition with the aid of the semiconductor body makes it possible to cause the arc to shoot out precisely at the required location, while the insulating support called for. form the slag to avoid excessive extinction of the arc, which would hamper good welding of the parts. In addition, the invention allows to adjust the very short duration of the arc - 0.5 to 2 sec. - By a judicious choice of the dimensions of the insulating body called upon to form the slag, which makes the use of a more or less complicated adjustment device superfluous.
The description of the appended drawing, given by way of non-limiting example, will make it clear how the invention can be implemented, the features which emerge both from the text and from the drawing, of course, forming part of the invention.
In Fig. 1, the rod 1 must be welded to the sheet 2. A screw 4 fixes the rod in the socket 3, made of brass for example. The sleeve 3 is subjected to the effect of a spring which acts in the direction of the arrow. The solder end of the rod 1 rests on the semiconductor body 5 which is surrounded by a

insulating body 6 intended to form the slag; When the semiconductor body 5 melts, the socket 3 rests temporarily on the insulating body 6. The semiconductor body 5 can have the following composition by weight: 54% powdered iron, 6% ferro-manganese (80% iron). Mn), ferrosilicon (45% Si) and ferrotitanium (25% Ti), 13% calcium carbonate, 13% calcium fluoride and 14% bentonite.
The insulating body 6 can contain by weight: 14% ferro-manganese (80% of Mn), of ferrosilicon (45% of Si) and of ferrotitanium (25% of Ti), 31% of calcium carbonate, 31% of calcium fluoride and 24% bentonite. The bodies 5 and 6 were degassed beforehand by heating to the sintering temperature of 900 ° C., away from air. The rod 1 and the sheet 2 being connected to the secondary winding of a welding transformer, the arc is initiated by means of the semiconductor body 5 and springs rapidly between the contact points of the rod @ 1 and the sheet 2 on the one hand and the body 5 on the other hand.
The body 5 and partially the body 6 successively melt and when the body 6 is sufficiently deformed, that is to say after 1 sec. approximately, the spring pushes the rod 1 onto the sheet 2 and the arcing current becomes a short-circuit current which can then be cut.
It should be noted that in general, the embodiment in which the auxiliary member is constituted by a socket allowing the fixing of the rod gives the best results. The assembly of the rod and the support mentioned can also be obtained by providing the rod with a projecting part, an extra thickness for example, by which it presses on the support.
It should also be noted that in the event of use of an auxiliary device to temporarily maintain.

one of the parts to be welded, it is not always necessary to provide between the parts a two-part inorganic mass, although this combination deserves preference.
Thus in FIG. 2. there is provided, between the rod 7 and the sheet 8, a semiconductor body, 9, called to form the slag, the composition of which is the same as that of the body 5 described above. On the sleeve 10, provided with a tightening screw 11, acts a spring. This sleeve rests on the body 9, the dimensions of which determine the moment at which, following the fusion of the body 9, the latter no longer supports the sleeve 10 and the rod 7 and at which this rod is assembled to the sheet 8.
