Description

<EMI ID=1.1>

<EMI ID=7.1>

<EMI ID=15.1>

 Production of articles in synthetic resins.

The invention relates to an improved process for the production of transparent or translucent articles made from synthetic resins, in particular optical elements or preforms for the production of optical elements. However, this process is also suitable for the production of other articles, in particular sheets and bars.

It is known that in the production of molded articles, especially optical elements, by polymerization of polymerizable liquid materials, it is desirable to use a liquid containing the greatest possible proportion of polymeric material, because the contraction of the material in The mold or molding cell during the polymerization is then reduced and thus makes it less difficult to control the precision of the finished products. It has previously been proposed to prepare a syrup to be used for the molding of optical elements, by dissolving a low molecular weight polymer in the monomer, or by partially polymerizing the monomer by photo-activated polymerization, i.e. - say activated by light, in the presence of a polymerization catalyst

<EMI ID = 1.1>

low molecular oics is achieved without the syrup becoming overly viscous. However, if the syrup is prepared by dissolving a low molecular weight polymer in the monomer, the simultaneous addition of foreign matter is not easily avoided. Likewise, when preparing a syrup by photo-activated polymerization, a uniform syrup with a high polymer content is not easily obtained because of the difficulty of stirring the syrup satisfactorily in the presence of the necessary lamps, and because optically homogeneous products are not obtained if the syrup is not properly stirred. In addition, the maintenance of devices containing these lamps and suitable for the treatment of masses of liquids which are viscous because of their polymer content, is not easy and gives rise to damage.

It has been found that in the production of articles substantially free from internal stresses and homogeneous, suitable for use as optical elements, by photopolymerization molding of a bulk polymerizable liquid, the best results are obtained and the job is rendered the best. easier when this liquid does not contain any substance which is active, as a polymer catalyst.

<EMI ID = 3.1> compound obtained by the oxidation of aliphatic thiols to a state someconcue lower than the state of maximum normal valence of sulfur.

According to the present invention, articles substantially free of internal stresses and having homogeneous transparency or translucency can be produced in a particularly easy and economical manner by a process in which a polymerizable syrup is polymerized in the solid state on contact with a surface. suitable molding and photo-activation, characterized in that the syrup contains a photo-activated polymerization catalyst but substantially does not contain a heat-activated polymerization catalyst which is effective at any temperature reached during the polymerization of the syrup in the solid state,

 and this syrup is prepared by partial thermopolymerization of a monomer or mixture of monomers in the presence of an aliphatic thiol or of a compound obtained by oxidation of an aliphatic thiol to any state below the normal valence state maximum sulfur.

The syrup can be prepared in the absence of any substance which acts as a thermoactive polymerization catalyst at any temperature reached during the subsequent polymerization of the syrup, or it can be prepared in the presence of a

used are such that all of the activity of the catalyst is substantially destroyed during the production of the syrup, so that polymerization of the syrup by thermoactivation does not occur during the subsequent molding operation. In the latter process, which is generally the preferred one, the amount of thermoactive catalyst which can be added can be determined by preliminary tests, for example by the following process:

A small sample of syrup, prepared by thermo- <EMI ID = 5.1> or its oxidation product, is placed in a test tube in a bath.

same as the first Sample, except that no thermal polymerization catalyst is used. We note the tenps that take: -lent those samples to gel in the solid state, and if

<EMI ID = 7.1>

it can be assumed that no substantial amount of thermopolymerization catalyst remains in the first sample, and therefore the syrup is suitable for application to the photopolymerization process. This test is not normally necessary once the syrup preparation recipe has been determined.

Suitable thermal polymerization catalysts

azo organic compounds in which the valences of the azo group are attached to different non-aromatic carbon atoms. These catalysts are described in English Patent Applications Nos. 7124/47 and 7125/47, and examples include alpha, alpha '

The casting is preferably subjected to a heat treatment after the photopolymerization phase to ensure

Thus, for polymethyl methacrylate moldings, the molding is preferably heated for about 7 hours at 100 [deg.] C or for about 4 hours at 110 [deg.] C.

Any liquid monomers may be used for the preparation of the syrups employed in the process of this invention.

For ease of operation, it is preferred to add the desired amount of photopolymerization catalyst to the monomer before preparing the syrup. Cataly-

nes, such as benzoline, acetoin, and butyroine, acylol ethers such as benzoline ethyl ether, and polyketalylen compounds such as diacetyl.

Aliphatic thiols suitable for the preparation of syrups used in the process of the present invention include monothioglycol, lauryl ercaptan, cetyl mercaptan, and .'-ethylhexyl mercaptan. However, monothioglycol is preferred because of its high activity, and further because it has been found that when monothioglycol is used in the process of the present invention, the products obtained have better resistance to discoloration under action of light and atmosphere, which can occur in the absence of this compound or other stabilizer, especially when benzolne is used as a catalyst.

<EMI ID = 13.1>

of the polymerization of the monomer in the production of syrup, the syrup can be stirred much more easily than is possible in the production of syrup by photopolymerization, which

<EMI ID = 14.1> holding a high power electric lamp with a casing.

The present invention is illustrated but is not limited in any way by the following example, in which all parts are expressed by weight.

EXAMPLE.-

A Schmidt plate preform is produced as follows:
100 parts of methyl methacrylate monomer, 0.5 parts of benzoline, 0.1 part of monothioglycol and 0.01 part of alpha, alpha'-azo-diisobutyronitrile are introduced into a rounded-bottom flask fitted with a stirrer and kept in a water bath. The temperature of the water is raised to 80 [deg.] And the stirrer is started. When the refractive index of the reaction mixture reaches 1.4370 at 20 [deg.], The hot bath water is replaced with cold water and the reaction mixture is allowed to cool to room temperature.

A preliminary test, in which the gelation time of a syrup prepared from the same initial mixture is compared with that of a syrup prepared by the same process using a control mixture of identical composition except that it does not contains no alpha, alpha'-azo-diisobutyronitrile, under identical heating conditions at 100 [deg.] C, shows that the gel times do not differ by more than 10 minutes. It is therefore known that no significant amount of alpha, alpha'-azo-diisobutyronitrile remains in the syrup and that, therefore, this syrup is suitable for use in the molding of optical elements by photopolymerization.

A cell is constructed by means of two plates of glass molds separated by a ring of rubber tube, protected by a casing of "Lassophane" forming a seal along the edge of the cell. Bottom glass mold plate has a upper surface frosted then polished so that this surface is optically flat. The rubber gasket is placed on the very edge of this mold plate, and the second glass mold plate is placed on top of the gasket. This second glass mold plate has a lower surface which is frosted and then precisely polished to an aspherical curve, representing the negative of the desired aspherical curve of the surface of the Schmidt plate to be cast.

 The cell thus formed is fixed by means of flanges and these flanges so that the distance between the lower and upper mold plates along the edge corresponds to that which is necessary to obtain the desired thickness of the plate. from Schmidt to mold. This distance is determined by trial and error.

Jn then cut the joint at a point, and the two ends are slightly apart so as to leave between them a suitable tap hole. We then pour into this hole, until

<EMI ID = 15.1>

the dissolved air has meanwhile been freed by subjecting it to a pressure of about 5 cms of mercury for about an hour. The two protruding ends of the gasket are then carefully replaced so as to form a good closure, and the assembly is placed over a mercury vapor lamp. The lamp is turned on and the assembly is kept in this position until polymerization has taken place, then it is introduced into an oven which is heated to a temperature of 100 [deg.] C,

<EMI ID = 16.1>

heating and allow the whole to cool very gradually in the oven to ordinary temperature. When producing a series of Schmidt plates by this process, we observe

<EMI ID = 17.1>

<EMI ID = 18.1>

The seal is then separated from the Schmidt plate preform which is brought to the desired diameter on a lathe.

The described method results in a Schmidt plate preform whose surfaces precisely match the contiguous surfaces.

of clarity and optical consistency, and is free from internal stresses.
