<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
Lorsque l'embrayage 24 est en prise avec le pignon 16, l'arbre 18 fait tourner les pignons 17 et 22, le pignon 17 entraîne le pignon 16 mais le pignon 23 tourne librement sans entraîner l'arbre 15; la came 2 -tourne à la même vi- tesse que le porte-molettes 1. Hais quand, comme expliqué ci-dessus, le circuit 35-36 a été fermé et quand l'électro 33 a été mis sous tension, l'embrayage 24 est mis en prise avec le pignon 23;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
REVENDICATIONS.

Control of first and second pass operations in metal can crimping machines.
The present invention is due to Messrs. Ch. TACK and E.F. SANDERS and relates to the control of first and second pass operations in machines for crimping metal cans.
As is known, these operations are generally controlled by the inaction of a set of levers which, for their part, are controlled by means of a camshaft or other auxiliary mechanical members whose movement is controlled. synchronized with that of the head of its age.
It is only when a box presents itself to be crimped that the intermediate shaft comes into action and successively advances the first and second pass knurls.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In these devices, the auxiliary pass control members generally include a large number of parts which constitute the entire seamer.
The object of the invention is to eliminate these mechanical parts, and to simplify the entire order.
For this purpose, the machine comprises electromagnetic means by which the crimping boot initiates the various crimping operations as soon as it has been introduced into the machine.
In the practical embodiment of the invention, as soon as the second setting ends, the wheel which is at the end of its trajectory, that is to say at the place where it is ready to begin the operation of crimping on the next boot, acts on also electro-magnetic means to bring the components back to their original position.
The accompanying drawings show by way of non-limiting example how such an order can be carried out in practice.
FIG. 1 is a schematic view representing the different elements of the control and showing how they cooperate with each other.
Figure 2 is a detail view.
FIG. 3 is a view showing the diagram of the electrical connections involved in the control.
FIG. 4 shows the trigger device which intervenes at the end of a crimping operation.
In the accompanying drawings, there is shown at 1 the wheel holder, inside which is provided a plate 2 in which is formed a groove 3 playing the line of a cam and receiving rollers 4 integral with the wheels 5 mounted by slides 6 in a part 7 fixed for example by screws 8 to the knurling wheel holder 1.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Box B to undergo the crimping operation is placed on a plate 9 which can be lifted by means of a shaft 10, controlled by means of a pedal 11 via arms 12-13.
A hollow shaft 14 is integral with the wheel holder 1, inside which extends another hollow shaft 15 integral with the plate 2.
On the shaft 14 is wedged a toothed pinion 16 meshing with a pinion 17 wedged on a shaft 18 driven by a drive shaft 19 through a transmission comprising for example a belt and pulleys 20 and 21 wedged respectively on the shafts 18 and 19 .
The shaft 18 also carries a toothed pinion 22 meshing with a toothed pinion 23 freely mounted on the hollow shaft 15.
An important characteristic is that the ratios between the gears 22-23 on the one hand, and 16-17 on the other hand, are slightly different.
On the other hand, between the pinions 16 and 23 is mounted on the shaft 15, so as to be able to slide, a claw clutch 24 which can be engaged, either by a tooth 25 with a tooth 26 of which is provided with the pinion 23, or by teeth 27 with teeth 28 with which the pinion 16 is provided.
The sliding movement of the clutch 24 is. controlled by means of a collar 29 to which is fixed the end of one of the branches of an angled lever 30-31 which can pivot in C. At the end of the other branch of the lever 30-31 is fixed the armature 32 of an electromagnet 33 whose winding is supplied by a branch 34 (Figure 3) connected to conductors 35-36 connected to son 37-38 of a network.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Inside the hollow shaft 15 extends a rod 39 which, downwards, carries a washer 391 with which the bottom of the box B is brought into contact during the lifting of the plate 9 by means of the pedal II. so as to act by the movement of the rod 39, upwards, on a switch 40 will make a circuit 41 which, by means of a magnetic switch 42, energizes the electromagnet 33 as well as an electromagnet 43 whose armature 44 acts on the linkage 12-13 and on the pedal 11 so as to maintain the plate 9 in its raised position.
When the clutch 24 is engaged with the pinion 16, the shaft 18 rotates the pinions 17 and 22, the pinion 17 drives the pinion 16 but the pinion 23 rotates freely without driving the shaft 15; the cam 2 - rotates at the same speed as the knurling wheel holder 1. But when, as explained above, the circuit 35-36 has been closed and when the electro 33 has been energized, the clutch 24 is engaged with the pinion 23;
the latter then causes a rotation of the shaft 15 and of the cam 2 at a speed which is slightly different from that of the knurling wheel holder 1 and this because of the different ratios of the sets of gears 22- & 3 and 16- 17. Due to this difference in speed, the knurls will be forced to follow a path around the bottom of the case in order to perform the first and second passes of the seam.
When the crimping ends, the wheel 4 (figure 4) is in front of a finger 45 and by acting on the latter it causes the pivoting of a pawl 46 which, by participating in the rotation of the plate 1, strikes a switch 47 cutting the circuit 41 so that, by the intervention of the magnetic switch 2, the electromagnets 33 and 43 are de-energized. 11 results:
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
1) that the clutch 24 is returned to its starting position and that the cam 2 turns again at the same speed as the part 1.
2) that, due to the de-energization of the electro 43, the pedal 11 is brought upwards under the effect of a spring 49. On the other hand, a spring 50 has pushed the crimped box.
The operations described can start again in the same way when another box has been placed on the plate 9.
It goes without saying that the scope of the invention is not limited by the details of the embodiment described and that many constructive modifications can be imagined: without departing from the scope of the invention.
It is thus in particular that the claw clutch 24 can be controlled by a system of levers actuated by the electromagnet 33 but that this clutch could also be executed as a rotating magnet, that is to say that the part 24 could itself form magnet.
