 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  (figure 1).

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

  BEAM DIVIDER OPTICAL DEVICE AND ITS APPLICATIONS.

   Optical devices are known consisting of a set of prisms which divide an incident light beam into several elementary beams.

   These devices have a number of drawbacks.

  First, the optical length of the beams within these devices is relatively large, which does not allow as much clarity to be achieved as is desirable.

   In addition, they do not allow rigorous adjustment of the amount of light reaching each image and each point of each image.

   Finally, they hardly allow a rigorous adjustment of the position of the images.

   With respect to these known devices, the invention relates to an optical beam-splitter device, characterized by four isosceles rectangular prisms juxtaposed to form a straight parallelepiped block with a square base and two reflecting surfaces each inclined at 45 on the one of the faces of the parallelepiped block perpendicular to the entry face of this block, the four plane diopters formed by the juxtaposed faces two by two of the prisms, constituting the parallelepiped block, being formed so as to transmit a determined fraction of the incident light, which produces an easily adjustable device, within which the optical length of the elementary beams is small, which makes it possible to adjust at will the intensity of each of the elementary light beams. mental.

   According to one embodiment, the plane diopters formed by the two juxtaposed faces of the prisms constituting the parallelepipedal block comprise alternately reflecting and transparent parallel bands, which produces a device making it possible to obtain, for each of the elementary beams, the desired intensity by an appropriate choice

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 the value of the ratio of the width of the transparent bands to the width of the reflective bands.

   According to another embodiment, the plane diopters formed by the juxtaposed faces of the prisms constituting the parallelepiped block are semi-reflecting, which produces a device which makes it possible to obtain, for each of the elementary beams, the desired intensity by a choice appropriate to the value of the ratio of reflected light to transmitted light.

   The invention also relates to an optical system for obtaining three identical images, characterized in that it comprises a prism device conforming to the preceding paragraphs, which produces a system giving identical luminous images of identical average luminosity. or different.

   The invention also relates to an optical system for obtaining images selected for color photography, characterized in that it comprises an optical system in accordance with the preceding paragraphs. And selection filters each interposed on it. one of the emerging elementary beams, which makes it possible to obtain selection images of appropriate brightness.

   Other characteristics and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description of several embodiments chosen only by way of example.

   In the accompanying drawing, where the same elements are designated by the same references in all the figures: - Figure 1 is a plan view of an optical device according to one embodiment of the invention.

   - Figure 2 is a corresponding front view - Figures 3 and 4 show schematically the arrangement of the alternately reflective and transparent bands. @ - Figures 5 and 6 represent the path of two light beams for the most distant objective.

   - Figure 7 shows the corresponding arrangement in previously known devices.

   FIG. 8 is a diagram of the development in air of the optical path of FIGS. 5 and 6.

   FIG. 9 schematically shows the same development for the known device of FIG. 7.

   FIG. 10 represents an embodiment of a selection apparatus according to the invention.

   According to the embodiment shown in FIG. 1, the optical device according to the invention comprises two reflective isosceles rectangular prisms 1, 2. One of the small faces of each of the prisms 1, 2 is applied against one of the two. parallel faces of a paralelipipedic block.

   This block consists of four isosceles rectangular prisms separating 3, 4, 5, 6 juxtaposed by their small faces. The diopters of the parallelepiped block formed by the faces of the prisms 3, 4, 5,6 constitute four plane diopters 7, 8, 9, 10.

   The six prisms are held together by gluing, for example, with Canada Balsam. (The assembly can be simplified by making prism 1 in one piece with prism 4, and the same for prisms 2 and 6, which does not change the properties).

   Each of the plane diopters 7, 8, 9, 10 has a series of reflecting bands alternating with transparent bands.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   According to the embodiment shown schematically in Figures 3 and 4, these bands are drawn at an angle such that they can be seen inclined 45 in one direction for the diopters 8 and 9, and in the opposite direction for the diopters 7 and 10,
These bands, the width of which is variable, as specified below, advantageously have an average width of 1 to 2 mm.

   The diopters 7, 8, 9, 10 therefore reflect a fraction of the light they receive and transmit the complementary fraction (disregarding the loss) For example, any light beam, such as beam 11 (figure 1 ) is divided into four bundles:
1) The beam 12 formed by the light transmitted directly by the diopters 7 and 8.

   2) The beam 13 formed by the light transmitted by the diopter 7 and reflected by the diopter 8.

     3) The beam 14 consisting of the light reflected by the diopter 7 and transmitted by the diopter 10.

   4) The beam 15 formed by the light reflected successively by the diopters 7 and 10, the latter beam constituting an unusable stray light beam.

   If the alternately reflecting and transparent bands were of equal width for the four diopters 7, 8, 9, 10, the four elementary beams would each represent a quantity of light equal to a quarter of the incident light 11 which can be used.

   According to the invention, the ratio of the width of the reflecting bands to the width of the transparent bands can be chosen at will, so that the ratio of the light transmitted to the light reflected for each of the diopters has the desired value, this value which may be identical or different for the four diopters 7, 8, 9, 10.

   If we denote by m the ratio of the width of the reflective bands of a diopter to the sum of the widths of the reflective bands and of the transparent bands of this same diopter, and if for example,; We give at m the respective values 0, 3, 0, 6, 0, 5 and 0, 4 for the diopters 7,8, 9,10 we can easily calculate (given that for an incident beam equal to 1 d ' intensity, it is reflected m and it passes directly 1-m) that the intensities of the emerging beams are:
0.29 for beam 12
0.35 for beam 13
0, 24 for beam 14
0, 12 for beam 15
This would only lose 12% of stray light represented by the usable part of the beam 15.

   In applications where colored filters are arranged on the emerging beams, beam 13 would be used, which represents the highest percentage for the less transparent filter.

   It is preferred to use bands reflected at 45 (Figures 3 and 4) rather than horizontal or vertical bands which, for certain light steps, would cause the appearance of periodic phenomena.

   FIGS. 5 and 6 represent the two possible steps of the oblique light beams and the formation of an image point by an objective associated with the prism device.

   In both figures, the incident beam has a direction 16 and gives the same image point 17 through the optically most distant objective 18.

   In figure 5, the beam crosses the diopter 7 and reflects on the diopter 8, while in figure 6, the beam is reflected.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 chit on dioptre 10 and cross dioptre 7.

   FIG. 8 represents the development of the prismatic system corresponding to one of the most distant objectives 18, that is to say the parallelepiped of air equivalent, in length or in width, to the optical step in the prism system.

   It can be clearly seen that, for an image point 17 located at the end of the field and formed by the objective 18, only the fraction 19 is used. The fraction 20 which is lost is inevitable, but it is notably less than that which is lost in known devices, such as shown in figure 7, to which the development of figure 9 corresponds.

   This loss of light is all the less as the equivalent parallelepiped (figure 8) is shorter. It is therefore advantageous to form the prisms with a glass with a high refractive index.

  For example, if we use a lens of index N- 1.72, the length of the equivalent prism (figure 8) is no more than 1.16 times its height, which allows to transmit a large quantity of light, thus giving satisfactory clarity to the limits of the image.

   Of course, many variants of the optical device which has just been described can be envisaged.

   Thus the diopters 7, 8, 9, 10 with alternating bands could be replaced by semi-reflecting diopters whose reflection ratio is suitably chosen. This embodiment is however more difficult to achieve.

   Likewise, the prisms 1 and 2 could be replaced, for example, by mirrors occupying the location of the hypotenuse faces of these prisms.

   The optical device according to the invention is capable of numerous applications.

   Since such a device works on infinity, it is necessary, to obtain several identical images, to add:
1 In the event that the focal length of the lenses is suitable, an earlier optical system whose focus is on the main subject, this system can be remote, variable or fixed.

   2 In the event that the focal length of the objectives is not suitable, an earlier system of the Galileo twin type comprising a converging assembly and a divergent assembly arranged and calculated to multiply or divide in a given ratio the focal length of the assembly .

   It is equally possible to use any afocal system with variable magnification continuously or discontinuously.

   These additional optical systems are well known and do not require a more detailed description.

   The optical device according to the invention needs to be produced in a very precise manner and to be held in place after perfect adjustment, the aim of this adjustment being to place the diopters 7 and 9 strictly in the same plane, and in another plane, dioptres 8 and 10.

  (figure 1).

   We can ensure the perfection of this adjustment by checking that none of the three images is duplicated.

   The three objectives must also be mounted precisely to move the three images away from an object point to infinity and achieve, between the three corresponding image points, the rigorous interval equal to the period of the successive views on the film. , in the case of shooting on a photosensitive product.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

   FIG. 10 represents an embodiment of a camera in accordance with the invention for the three-color selection through the color filters.

   The main housing 21 contains the receiving and inducing film reels 22, the film 23 being moved, at each exposure, by a length equal to three frames. In an auxiliary box 24, a separator device 25 according to the invention is held by a clamp 26. The upper and lower prisms slightly exceed the prisms from the center to the right, so as to avoid grazing reflections on the facings. these verticals of extreme prisms.

   Three identical objectives 27 are arranged behind block 25 and are juxtaposed as closely as possible and cut rectangularly so as to receive in width the maximum amount of light. Anti-reflective partitions 28 are arranged between the objectives 27 and the film 23 to prevent an objective from impressing a fraction of the film other than that which should correspond to it.

   A diaphragm 29 and a shutter 30 are arranged in front of the block 27.

   Finally, an afocal optical system 31, held in slides 32, comprises a fixed diverging element 33 and a movable converging element 34, the movement of which ensures focusing.

   A level 35 makes it possible to level the apparatus very exactly so that a distant vertical line gives three vertical images in the continuation of one another.

   Colored filters 36, 37, 38 are arranged in front of each of the objectives 27.

   It should be noted that a completely similar apparatus can be used for projection, on the sole condition that the unfolding is done by three images at the same time and that the images are illuminated from the right by a suitable condenser.

   As the operation is identical for projection and shooting, everything that has been said for shooting applies fully to projection.
