   APPAREIL PHOTOGRAPHIQUE. -

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

CAMERA. -
The present invention relates to a photographic apparatus, in particular for micro-film.

   There are several kinds of cameras built to shoot micro-film. Thus, control of the shutter and the film advancement mechanism has been provided for by borrowing the necessary driving force from an electric motor which stops in good time. Equipping a device with such a motor leads to complicated and costly constraints (gear trains, clutches, relays, etc.)
An apparatus has also been constructed in which certain movements are obtained by the displacement of the armature of an electromagnet. This attracts an armature whose very small movement is mechanically amplified by means of levers and gears, which again represents the use of expensive and disturbing parts.

   On the other hand, in the devices known to the applicant, the controls are placed on the camera or are connected to it by cables or rods. These mechanical connections cause shocks which are detrimental to the stability and consequently to the sharpness of the images obtained: cir-. consistency which is of enormous importance in micro-film shooting.

   All these drawbacks are avoided by the apparatus according to the invention which in particular has the following qualities: high precision - ease of handling - absolute safety of operation - inexpensive construction.

   The invention consists of the combination of coordinated arrangements the main effect of which is to eliminate all shocks due to either internal or external causes.

   To avoid the former, provision has been made according to the invention for the controls of the shutter mechanism and of the film advancement mechanism to be carried out independently by means of electromagnets. These are constituted by solenoids attracting plunging cores recalled by springs, guided throughout their travel, and to which the control devices are connected.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   According to other features of the invention, damping devices are provided in connection with the cores of all the control electromagnets.

   To avoid shocks of external origin, provision has been made, according to the invention, for a control device placed at a distance from the camera and without a mechanical place with the latter to control the admission of the current d. excitation to the electromagnets and the interruption thereof.

   According to another particular feature of the invention, means are provided for the control device of the camera to ensure the closing of the control circuit for the opening of the shutter and the closing. of the film advancement mechanism control circuit.

   According to another feature of the invention, means are provided so that the switching device which sends excitation current to the control electromagnet of the film advancement mechanism sends this current only during the operation. minimum time required to operate the device.

   Other features and details of the invention will become apparent from the description of the drawings appended to this specification, which represent schematically and by way of example only, one embodiment of the invention.

   FIG. 8 is a circuit diagram of the control device according to a preferred embodiment of the invention.

   - Figure 9 is a circuit diagram of an apparatus comprising a shutter with two superimposed flaps.

   - Figure 10 is a circuit diagram of an apparatus comprising a shutter with a single shutter, operating with the device of Figure 6.

   In these different figures, the same reference notations denote identical elements.

   Referring to Figure 1, 1 denotes a stage which approximately equally divides the volume of the camera body.

   The axis of the objective shown along AA is perpendicular to this plate and passes through the center of a rectangular window 2 pierced therein.

   The shutter device is placed on one side of the stage, and the film advancement mechanism is on the other side.

   The shutter device comprises, in the model of apparatus shown in FIG. 1, a single shutter flap 3 applied against the plate.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 by a spring not shown. The shutter is connected desmodromically, by a rod 4, to the plunger core 5 of an electromagnet 6 fixed to the plate. The electromagnet 6 is advantageously shielded.

   The plunger core 5 is guided throughout its travel by a tube 7 split longitudinally to allow passage for the rod 4. A return spring 8 is fixed by one of its ends to the plunger core 5 and by the other to the frame, which is shown schematically in this figure, as in figures 1, 2, 3, 4 appended hereto, by some hatching and by the number 1 'When the window is almost completely opened by the movement of the shutter due on suction of the core by the excited electromagnet, the rod 4 meets a stopper 9 having, in the embodiment described, the shape of a collar surrounding the guide tube. Likewise, when the window is about to close completely, the rod 4 meets a stopper 10.

   The stops 9 and 10 are integral with a rod 11 which can move longitudinally despite the friction exerted on it by leaf springs 12, 13, one of which 12 is fixed to the frame and the other 13 of which is stressed. by an adjusting screw 14 movable relative to the frame 1 '; the purpose of this arrangement is to absorb the living force acquired by the core and its crew, at the end of its movement in one or the other direction. It is evident from this figure that the window 2 will begin to reveal itself when the excitation current is sent to the solenoid of the electromagnet 6, and will close again when this excitation having ceased, the plunger core obeys. to the action of the return spring 8.

   FIG. 2 shows a similar arrangement advantageously applicable when the exposure time must be less than half a second.

  In this case, the part of the film closest to the electromagnet, in FIG. 1, would be more or less notably more exposed than the part close to the other end of the window. The shutter then comprises two shutters, 3 and 3 ', both controlled according to the invention by separate electromagnets 6 and 6', and applied against the plate by leaf springs (not shown), one end of which is integral with the frame 1 '.

   As in the previous case, the movement of the flaps is controlled desmodromically by plunger cores shown diagrammatically by 5 and 5 ', urged outwardly of the solenoids by the springs 8 and 8' fixed to the frame, In this arrangement, the successive excitation of the two electromagnets 6 and 6 'so that when opening the window 3' is somewhat behind with respect to the window 3, which eliminates the inconvenience of the overexposure of part of the film. When the current stops flowing through the appliances 6 and 6 ', the springs 8 and 8' return the two shutters to the closed position and this return is simultaneous.

   The film advancement device, in the apparatus according to the invention, comprises (see FIGS. 3 and 4), mounted on the other side of the plate 1 fixed to the frame 1 ', an electromagnet 16, advantageously shielded, which tends to suck a plunger core 17, guided in all its movement by an envelope 18 slit longitudinally to allow the passage of a part 19 passing through the core and projecting it on either side at 19 'and 19'. To one of the projections thus formed is articulated in 20 a set of two rods 22, 22 'having claws 22 at their end which penetrate into the perforations 24, 24' of the film 25 placed on the plate. The claws slide in - grooves 23 made in the plate 1 in order to prevent them from attacking the metal of the latter.

   A pair of very light springs 26, .26 ', only one of which is shown in FIG. 3, tending to apply the claws to the center of the film. The film 25 is carried by two reels external to the housing of the apparatus and enclosed in casings 27, 27 'connected to the frame, the reels being removably mounted, according to a known device, on shafts 28 and 28 '. It will be noted that the action of the claws on the film is limited to an area between the window 2 centered on the objective, and the end of the apparatus close to the spool shaft 28 ', so that the film fragments which could be detached from the film by the action of the claws cannot fall on an unimpressed part of the film.

   To the projection 19 "is fixed a rod 29 attacking a connecting rod 30 integral with a sleeve 31 mounted idle on a shaft 32 journalled at 33 and 34 in the frame of the apparatus, said sleeve being connected to one end of a

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 first spring 35 wound on said shaft, the other end of said spring being free, so that the movement of the connecting rod caused by relaxation of the core by the de-energized magnet tends, thanks to the friction developed on the shaft by the first spring 35, to rotate the shaft 32 in a determined direction, called the "direction of advance", represented by an arrow in FIG. 3.

  The shaft 32 carries, mounted on it with friction, a pulley 35 attacking, by means of a belt 36, a pulley of smaller diameter 37, wedged on the shaft 28 'of the bobbin storing the film. impressed. The friction mounting device for pulley 35 is shown in detail in Fig. 5.

  The pulley 35, which turns freely around an extension 32 'of the shaft 32, is pressed against a shoulder 32 "of the shaft 32 by a coil spring 38, one end of which acts on the pulley 35 upon intervention. a washer 39 and the other end of which bears, by means of a washer 40, against a nut 41 screwed onto the end 42 of the shaft 32. A sleeve 43 linked to the pulley 35 protects the device thus described By tightening the nut 41 more or less, the friction is adjusted to the desired degree.

   The shaft 32 also carries, wound on it in the opposite direction to the spring 35, a second spring 44, one end of which is fixed to the frame of the apparatus and the other end of which is free, so that the rotation of the shaft 32 in the direction opposite to the direction of advance is prevented by the friction which the spring 44 exerts on it.

   The apparatus thus conceived is completed by a return spring 45, one end of which is fixed to the projection 19 "and the other end of which is connected to the frame 1 '. This spring, long in order to have a tension as constant as possible, passes over a return pulley 46 mounted on a pivot 47 attached to the frame. In order to soften the movement that the moving assembly takes when the de-energization of the electromagnet 16 allows the spring 45 to ex- milking the core of the solenoid, the apparatus comprises a damping device whose effect is felt during this movement which, accompanied by penetration of the claws 22 into the film, corresponds to the advancement of the latter .

   The damping device comprises a piston 48 moving in a cylinder 49 integral with the frame, where it compresses air, the flow of which is provided by a calibrated hole 50 drilled in the cylinder 49 towards the closed end thereof. . The bottom of the cylinder contains a felt pellet 51 soaked in oil where the leather 52 fixed to the active face of the piston 48 abuts at the end of the stroke. On the side opposite to its active face, the piston is connected to an elastic steel rod, 53, perpendicular to the axis of the cylinder 49, the other end of the elastic rod passing freely through an eyelet 54 drilled in the projection 19 " A very flexible connection of the core and the piston is thus obtained, and a very gentle movement of the assembly.

   The operation of the film advancement mechanism thus designed results immediately from the preceding description. When the excitation current is sent to the electromagnet, it sucks its core despite the resistance of the return spring 45. The rods 21, the claws 22 of which are released from the film, drag on the film. here by exerting extremely light pressure. The rod 29 rotates the connecting rod 30 and the sleeve 31 which is fixed thereto, but not the shaft 32 because then the 2nd spring 35 is released and the spring 44 tends to tighten.

   When the excitation of the electro ceases, the moving equipment moves back under the call of the spring 45, the movement being softened by the air shock absorber 48, 49. In this return movement the claws attack the valve. film and advance it by a length equal to the stroke of the core. At the same time, the shaft 32 performs a fraction of a turn, which causes the wound portion of the film to be wound.

   The friction transmission produced by pulley 35 has the advantage of eliminating all the shocks which may arise due to differences in the linear speed of the film, pushed by the claws and stressed by the winding reel, differences which become appreciable when the diameter of the reel increases as a result of the accumulation of turns of film which are wound up therein,
The apparatus can be supplemented by a hand shears, the knives of which have been shown diagrammatically at 55, 55 'in FIG. 3.

   The control device of the camera, located outside the latter, is arranged to ensure successively the closing

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 of the circuit for controlling the opening of the shutter, and the closing of the circuit for controlling the film advancement mechanism.

   The means provided for this will be explained now.

   According to a preferred embodiment of the device according to the invention, and which is shown in Figures 1, 3, 4 and 8, the external control device (see Figure 3) simply comprises a box containing a switch 56 controlled by the adjustable timer wiper 57 of any model, the contact 56 being closed when the operator presses a button 58, and this contact 56 remaining closed for a time interval which depends on the prior setting of the timer 57.

   Referring to Figure 3, the plate 1 carries a post 5Q supporting a light lever 60, to which the projection 19 "can move when the aspirated core 17 is about to come to the end of its travel. during this movement, which brings the rod 60 of the folded electromagnet closer to the rod 60 butts against a rod 61 fixed to a hub 62 'rotating freely in a support 63' mounted on the plate 1. The hub 63 'por - You a mercury switch 64 having two active contacts 65 and 66. The rod 61 has an extension 62 which passes through a window 63 of the plate 1. The end of the rod 62 is on the path of a stopper 11 'linked to the rod 11 of the damping device of the plunger core 5 of the electromagnet actuating the shutter.

   (In the case where the device has two flaps, it is the core 5 'which controls the second flap, which will be used for this purpose). The rod 11 carries at its end a contact 67 which closes on a blade 68 a circuit, the whole of which is visible in FIG. 8. In this figure, which is purely schematic, the core 5 and the rod 11 have been shown. on the same line, for the simplicity of the presentation. This figure also shows the rod 60 as integral with the core of the electromagnet 16.

   The operation of the device is as follows:
At the start of operations, the cores of electros 6 and 16 are at rest outside the solenoids. The mercury contactor is tilted as shown in the figure, ie the electro 16 circuit is open. When you close @ 'interrupterur 56, the electro 6 attracts its core and releases the window placed in front of the lens. Exposure of the film begins and lasts until the mid-uterus opens the switch 56 again. On reaching the full stroke, the core 5, acting by means of the rod 11 and its stop 11 ', in cooperation with the rod 62, caused the tilting of the mercury contactor, and the mercury contained therein has placed the contacts 65 and 66 in electrical communication.

   However, no current passes through the solenoid of the electromagnet 16, because the rod 11 has moved the contact 67 away from the blade 68. It is only when the electromagnet 6 releases its core 5. , that the circuit will be closed (i.e. when the exposure of the film is finished). At this moment, the current flowing through the electro 16 causes the suction of its core 17. On reaching the full stroke, the core 17 reverses (by the stop of the rod 60 on the rod 61) the position of the contactor 64, which cuts off the excitation current, which frees the core 17 which returns to rest. We see that the electro 16 is powered only just the time necessary for its operation.

   The small spark which arises, at the moment of the circuit breaking, in the contactor 64, cannot illuminate the film because the contactor 64 is coated on the outside with an opaque coating. According to the invention, an additional contact 65 'switches on, at rest, a source 64' and a neon lamp 64 'which informs the operator on the operation of the apparatus (FIG. 8).

   It will be noted that the contact 67 can be very small, its role being only to close a circuit which is open elsewhere when this closing takes place.

   The advantages of this device are numerous: the film advancement mechanism works very quickly, so that there is no downtime between taking a picture and the next. - Contacting

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 by mercury allows the use of high currents with a material which is however light and relatively inexpensive and the mercury tube is indestructible. - The control box only has one actuator, and the associated timer can be of any model. An automatic frame counter can be operated by the single control button.

   In exceptional cases, the apparatus may be required to operate in an inclined position which would preclude the use of a mercury contactor. In this case, a variant is provided which will be described below:
In FIGS. 6 and 7 which show this other embodiment of the control device external to the apparatus, elements 2 'are designated which are fixed to the box which encloses the control apparatus. A column 69 carries, with the interposition of an insulating frame 70, two copper contact blades 71,72, respectively connected to the solenoids of the electromagnets 6 and 16, as seen in the diagram of FIG. 10. An insulating contact-holder bar 73 carries at its upper part two conductive blades 74 and 75 connected by a conductive loop 76.

   A flexible wire 77 leads to a switch 78, the opening of which would prevent the current from the source 79 (shown diagrammatically by a battery) from reaching the control solenoids of the electromagnets. The contact carrier strip is mounted on a support 80 carried by the rod 81 of a piston 82 moving in a cylinder 83 connected to the frame 2 '. To one of the faces of the piston 82 is applied the pressure of a motor spring 84 bearing on one end of the cylinder, the extension of this spring tending to move the contact holder bar in the direction of the arrows shown. in Figures 6 and 7 (operating direction). When the piston moves in this direction, it compresses in the cylinder 83 air which flows through a duct 85 whose orifice is controlled by an adjustable needle 86.

   A soft button 87 and a graduated disc 88 are mounted on the needle screw and respectively allow the drive thereof and the control of its position. The bottom of the cylinder has a calibrated orifice 89 through which the flow of compressed air occurs in the cylinder 83 when the piston 82 has passed the inlet of the duct 85, so that after the passage, at the right of this inlet, the piston moving in the operating direction, the movement of the piston is done at constant speed until the end of the stroke.

   The support of the contact holder bar has at its base a lug 86 which cooperates with a leaf spring 87 fixed to the frame: the blade has a hole 88 in which the lug of the support engages when the bar has been brought in. beyond the contacts fixed in a rest position which marks the end of its movement in the operating direction. A push-button 89 allows the blade 87 to be lowered and thus the lug 86 to be released, which has the effect of letting the mainspring 84 relax, causing all the moving equipment in the operating direction,
The apparatus is completed by an arming lever '90 mounted in the circuit of the switch 78 in the case of the embodiment described here, or actuating it otherwise.

   An antagonist spring 91 fixed to the frame tends to keep the cocking lever in the position which corresponds to the closing of the switch 78. By moving the lever 90 in the direction indicated by the double arrow in FIG. 6, one moves the bar support in the opposite direction of the operating direction, until the lug 86 engages in the hole 88. The apparatus is then cocked and the lever 90, abandoned by the operator, returns to its initial position, which closes the contact at 78.

   We will assume that this state of affairs exists now. 'By pressing button 89, the operator activates the device. The spring 84 relaxes, moving the piston 82 and with it the rod 81 and the contact carrier bar 73. The speed of movement of this assembly is regulated by the opening of the conduit 85, and predetermined by the placement of a division of the plate 88 opposite an index 92 integral with the frame. The contact carrier strip first meets the blade 71 which closes the circuit of the electromagnet '6' on the battery 79. The electromagnet attracts its core, which causes the opening. shutter shutter.

   The lens window remains unmasked for as long as the current is flowing, that is to say practically for a time which depends on the width (constant) of the contact 74 and the speed (variable, but

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 set for each operation) of movement of the bar. When contact 74 has left blade 71, the shutter control electromagnet releases its core and the window closes. The bar continuing its movement, the piston 82 manages to mask the entry of the duct 85 and the air must flow through the calibrated orifice 89. The whole of the moving assembly continues its movement at constant speed.

   Immediately, the contact 75, having reached the right of the active part of the blade 72, closes on the battery 79 the circuit of the electromagnet 16. The latter attracts its core. -As the width of the contact 75 is very small (it is limited to what is necessary for the core to reach full stroke), the electromagnet 16 de-energizes almost immediately, and the release of its core causes the progress of the film and its winding, as explained above. The operating process is thus completed, and a new action on the cocking lever will allow the request of another view. It can be seen that the opening of the battery circuit to the right of the switch 78 is necessary so that the passage of the bar to the right of the active parts of the blades 71 and 72 does not cause the excitation of the electro- matching magnets.

   An antiresonant circuit mounted in parallel on the blade 72 and the wire leading to the battery absorbs the spark which would occur when passing the contact 75 if such an arrangement were not adopted.

   In the case where the shutter comprises two flaps, the contact system employed according to the invention is shown in FIG. 9. There is indicated by 75 ′ the metal bar carried by the contact carrier bar 73 described above. The previous installation is retained but a contact 71 'is provided for energizing solenoid 6' (see Figures 9 and 2).

  The width of the bar 75 'and the displacement of the blades 71' and 71 is such that the circuit is cut on 71 when 71 'is still under tension. The operation of this device is clear enough that it does not need to be extended further.

   It is evident that many changes can be made to the details of the devices described above. Thus, in particular, an electronic control can be substituted for the control device fully described in this memorandum. It is also possible to give other shapes to the various members or to modify the damping systems, without departing from the scope of the invention, provided that this does not conflict with the following claims.
