<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

IMPROVEMENTS IN THE MANUFACTURING OF STRINGS.
The present invention relates to the manufacture of strings for tennis rackets and similar sports articles, musical instruments, etc.
The invention aims more particularly to improve said cords by constituting them with a miltifiliform core sealed in a tote, so as to obtain extremely strong and elastic cords, and having good resistance to fatigue and distortion.
The present invention therefore essentially relates to a new process capable of producing the aforesaid new article, the essential characteristics of which will become more apparent from the description given below with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: FIG. 1 is a view in perspective of a racket provided with an improved string according to the invention. Figure 2 is an enlarged perspective view of a small section of such a rope.
FIG. 3 is an enlarged perspective view illustrating step by step the manufacturing process of the improved ropes according to the invention.
Strings for tennis rackets and the like should be very strong and elastic, have high resistance to tension and bending, and have a smooth hydrophobic outer surface.
For this purpose, the object of the invention consists of an eminently elastic flexible core, preferably consisting of a number of twisted threads of synthetic plastic material, and a braided covering constituting a strong arming sheath. and preferably formed using synthetic plastic threads, this sheath being perfectly sealed around the core so as to form a smooth and hard cord, and exhibiting good abrasion resistance.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
As a raw material for the execution of such a rope, the inventor has found that plastics of the amido-polymer type are very useful, and that the application of nylon is particularly desirable because its molecules orient themselves when applying pressure to obtain the desired diameter, and that it increases the strength of the cord.
FIG. 1 shows a racket 10 provided with an improved cord 11. In FIG. 2, it is noted that said cord 11 has a twisted core 12 flexible and very elastic, and a braided wire arming sheath 13. , this core and this sheath being fully sealed, preferably with a synthetic plastic material 14. The rope thus formed comprises a twisted core and a braided sheath intimately linked, it is hard and waterproof and it will not suffer any wear when it is pulled. through the holes in the racket.
The cord thus composed is made by first forming a set of twisted threads 15 (Figure 3); this assembly then passes through a reservoir containing a solution of a special coating material, preferably nylon-based. Preferably, a few thin layers will be applied instead of a single larger layer. Between the application of the different coating layers, the whole is lightly brushed in order to obtain a very smooth final surface 16. This compound cord is then air-dried, and then covered with a sheath 17 constituting preferably a sleeve of braided nylon threads.
The cord thus covered is then coated again by passing through the integrating solution, preferably also by applying several successive layers and by lightly brushing the surface between each coating, in order to obtain a smooth outer surface 18. The cord is then compressed while a predetermined temperature is applied to it so that its diameter decreases and a perfectly homogeneous cord 19 is obtained having a greatly increased tension, the two coatings melting under the effect of heating and of the pressure while by sealing together the two constituent parts of the cord ,.
This homogeneous assembly 19 is then cooled by air or by passing through a water bath, and the product thus obtained is very solid and homogeneous and comprises an eminently elastic twisted core, covered with a sheath of braided armament.
The number and size of the coating layers will be chosen so as to ensure that a maximum reaction surface is obtained on the tennis ball during application; in the case of musical instruments, the number and importance of said layers will depend on the desired tone.
As mentioned above, solutions based on synthetic resin can be used for the homogenization of the cord; preferably, however, the covering solution will comprise nylon in the form of flakes, dissolved with isopropanol and tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol in water, the proportion of the nylon flakes varying between 10 and 25% of the weight. by weight, isopropanol between 50 and 70% by weight, and tetrahydrofurfury alcohol between 5 and 20% by weight, the water being added in an amount such that a coating solution having the desired consistency.
Experiments have shown that sufficient coatings were obtained by applying the following two formulas, based on a mixture of 275 Kgr. :

desires to give to the final product.
If you want to obtain softer strings, it will be necessary to add a certain amount of a plasticizer.
It was found that a rope having a diameter of 1.42 mm. before

The homogenization or the sealing of the cords of the quoted format preferably takes place under a tension of 22 Kgr, the speed of the spinning reaching approximately 700 M./hour, and the temperature being substantially 180 C.
The cord thus obtained has sufficient rigidity to be applied to tennis racquets and the like.
By modifying the spinning speed, the pressure and the temperature, the stiffness of the final product can be varied; the speed range is between 180 and 900 M./hour, and the temperature range between 125 C and 200 C
The cords produced by the above-described process have a very high tension, a great elasticity in use and a considerable resistance to fatigue and distortion; the racquet strings keep their profile, are practically indestructible and hydrophobic and show no stretch in their continued use. When ropes are made of nylon, molecular orientation is achieved by energizing and abruptly cooling.
Notwithstanding that the core will preferably be twisted in order to obtain a very high elasticity, it will in some cases be desirable to use a braided multiple core or a multiple core formed of linear yarns.
Preferably, nylon will be used, but all other suitable materials can be used, for example cores or sleeves of textile or silk combined with plastics, suitable binders being able to be applied for the homogenization or the sealing of the material. flexible core covering or sheath in waterproof material. '
It goes without saying that the process of the invention, although being extremely interesting for the manufacture of strings for rackets and musical instruments, can also be applied for the production of articles of all kinds, such as for example guides-hamegons, fishing lines ... etc.
Likewise, it is possible to introduce changes of any kind in the format and profile of the constituent parts, and the raw material used for the manufacture of the ropes described, without thereby departing from the scope of the present invention.
