 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

  IMPROVEMENTS TO CENTRIFUGAL AND SIMILAR MACHINES.

   The invention relates to an improved control for ensuring the rotation of two members in the same direction, but at slightly different rotational speeds when a considerable friction force exists between these members. More particularly, it relates to the arrangement used in centrifugal machines, in which a cylindrical or conical casing or basket is rotated at high speed, and a screw conveyor rotates coaxially at a somewhat lower speed so that the conveyor removes from the casing or baskets in a continuous manner material which has been separated from a liquid by the inaction of centrifugal force.

   In such an arrangement, the action of the centrifugal force results in a very high resistance to the relative rotation of the conveyor and the casing or basket, but since the difference in speeds is small, e.g. 10 revolutions per minute, compared to the very high speed of rotation of the assembly, which can be around 1000 revolutions per minute, the labor expended to rotate the conveyor in the casing or basket is not necessarily excessive compared to the drive of the whole machine
In the existing provisions,

   both the conveyor and the casing or basket have been driven by 'separate' shafts and transmissions from a common motor .. and thus have a marked disadvantage in that the power required to overcome the resistance of friction between the conveyor and the casing or basket, is transmitted at the very high speed at which the conveyor and the casing or basket are rotated.

  This results in the obligation to use much larger transmission members than would be necessary if the friction torque were overcome at the differential speed, ie 5 or 10 revolutions per minute. In other words, in such an arrangement the controls must be able to work at a power about two hundred times greater than if the differential speed were only used.
In the operation 'of such a machine, the friction force which can be generated is most often quite unpredictable, and consequently

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 the power to be transmitted by the controls which have already been discussed can easily become excessive and damage these controls inadvertently.

   To remedy this drawback, it has been proposed to use planetary or epicyclic gear trains interposed between one rotating member and the other, so that the conveyor is driven by this means from the casing or rotating basket, and the latter alone is driven by a source of external motive force The action of this epicyclic control is to reduce the speed at which the strong frictional resistance is overcome, and consequently the power to be transmitted by the control is proportionally less .

   However, even with this arrangement, the possibility remains of excessive stresses on the wheels or gears, due to abnormal resistance between the conveyor and the casing or basket and in known devices of this type this is avoided. by limiting the torque which must be applied to an element of the epicyclic gear to allow the operation of the transmission.

   It has been found that the resistance generated between the conveyor and the casing or basket depends on the nature of the material being treated, the degree to which the solids are separated from the liquid and, also, on the differential speed between the casing or basket and the viso
For certain materials this resistance can become excessive to the point of making the operation of the machine quite impossible, but it has been observed that this resistance can be greatly reduced by modifying the differential speed; and that by this means operation can be made practically possible.

   However, with fixed gears, whether of the direct drive or epicycloidal type, a modification of the differential speed can only be achieved by providing neighboring or juxtaposed gears, which is very disadvantageous and otherwise expensive.
The object of the invention is to provide an epicyclic control which, in addition to the advantages already defined, makes it possible to change the differential speed in a simple and rapid manner, by driving an element of the control by a source of motive force. independent, so that by modifying the speed of rotation of this organ, the differential ratio can be modified.

   Another advantage of the invention lies in the fact that the auxiliary control can be arranged to be put out of action when the resistance between the conveyor and the casing or basket becomes excessive, thereby protecting the load. machine against damage.

   It should be understood that with the main control wheel rotating, there is no differential rotation of the screw and the casing or basket as long as the auxiliary control wheel rotates at the same speed; and
 EMI2.1
 the magnitude of the relative movement will also depend on the difference between the wheel and the epicyclic reduction gear ratio that, despite a higher speed of rotation of the screw and the casing or basket, the relative movement (or speed of engagement of the teeth) of the wheels is relatively low so that the wheels can be small in size and still have an extended life.

   Again, if the torque becomes excessive which can occur frequently in practice, due to an overload of the machine in material. the gears can be preserved by arranging to cut off the source of the auxiliary control when the latter reaches a predetermined value of transmitted power o This is achieved by driving the auxiliary wheel with a separate electric motor comprising the usual maximum cut-off device., or
