  PROCEDE D'APPLICATION DE DIVERSES SUBSTANCES SUR CERTAINS PRODUITS DE
DIVERSES REACTIONS.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

     On 'obtient également une couleur noire foncée avec chacune des additions suivantes au bain de teinture : 3 % en poids de pyridine, 2 % en poids de benzène, 2 % en poids de chloroforme, 3 % en poids de méthyléthyl cétone, 2 % en poidsde cyclohexanone, 0,3 % en poids de phénol, 0,3 % en poids de crésol..

  PROCESS FOR APPLYING VARIOUS SUBSTANCES TO CERTAIN PRODUCTS OF
VARIOUS REACTIONS.

   The main patent gives the description of a process by which certain substances are incorporated or applied, in particular coloring matters and stabilizers, on reaction products obtained by causing sulfur dioxide to act on compounds of molecular weight. - raised, unsaturated in multiple positions, this process consisting in treating these reaction products in the swelling state by the -substances to be incorporated or applied. The most important application of this process is that of immersing these reaction products in the swelling state in dye baths. According to the main patent, the dry reaction product is swollen by a separate treatment with a. swelling agent.

   It has been found, however, that the swelling and the incorporation (application) of coloring materials, stabilizers and / or other substances can be combined in a single treatment. According to the invention, 'either incorporates or is applied the coloring materials, stabilizers and / or other substances, if they exist, to the reaction products obtained by causing sulfur dioxide to act on polymers and / or copolymers of dienes conjugates, by immersing these reaction products in water solutions or dispersions of the substances to be incorporated (to be applied), solutions or dispersions to which swelling agents have been added.

   Examples of polymers or copolymers of conjugated dienes which, separately or as a mixture with one another, can serve as a base material in the preparation of the products of the reaction to be treated according to the invention are: natural rubber, gutta-percha, balata, polymers of butadiene, methyl butadiene, dimethyl butadiene and. chloroprene, copolymers of mixtures of these monomers and copolymers of these monomers with alkenes, such as isobutene, and vinyl compounds such as styrene, vinyl chloride and acrylonitrile. Polymers and copolymers of conjugated dienes which react with sulfur dioxide contain several unsaturated bonds.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 turées per molecule.

   Among the reaction products obtained by causing sulfur dioxide to act on polymers and / or copolymers of conjugated dienes, there may be mentioned the products which are formed when sulfurous anhydride is made to act on a compound. mixture of one or more of the polymers and / or copolymers mentioned above with one or more unsaturated compounds of low molecular weight also capable of reacting with sulfur dioxide. Examples of these low molecular weight unsaturated compounds are: butadiene, 1.5 hexadiene, allyl alcohol, allyl chloride, allyl acetate, diallyl phthalate and diallyl adipate. The limit between high molecular weight and low molecular weight is considered here to correspond to a molecular weight of 5000.

   The reaction products obtained by causing sulfur dioxide to act on the polymers and / or copolymers of the conjugated dienes will be referred to below, to be abbreviated by the expression "reaction products".

   In the first place the invention is important from the point of view of the dyeing of the reaction products. The alkaline and neutral coloring matters are particularly important from the point of view of the process according to the invention, because it is precisely these coloring matters which make it possible to dye the products of the reaction in perfectly clear colors and resistant to washing, without involving adjuvants.

   The invention can also be applied to the incorporation (application) of one or more stabilizers in or on the products of the reaction.

  The stabilizers in question prevent the decomposition of the reaction products without the action of heat, light and air. Many compounds, amines and amides, can serve to stabilize the products of the reaction against the action of heat, for example thiourea, melamine and hexamethylene tetramine, as well as the various thiocyanates.

   The process according to the invention can also be used to introduce active cation substances, such as cetyl pyridine bromide and sapamines, into the reaction products. These substances make the reaction products much easier to dye with acid coloring materials.

  According to the invention, the active cation compounds and the acid dyestuffs can be introduced into the reaction products, by a single treatment, if desired.

   Finally, it is possible to incorporate (or apply) in or on the products of the reaction, in addition to the coloring materials, stabilizers and cation active substances, numerous other substances according to the invention.

  Mention may be made, among these substances, of those which increase the absorption capacity of humidity, those which render the product of the reaction water-repellent, those which reduce its combustibility and those which exert a strong influence on its brightness. or his touch. As has already been said, with regard to the combination of coloring materials and active cation compounds, it is possible to incorporate (or apply) by a single treatment in or on the products of the reaction according to the invention various coloring materials, stabilizers and / or other substances, if they exist.

   The swelling agents to be introduced according to the invention can be mixed completely with water, such as acetone and pyridine. However, preference is given to swelling agents which are sparingly soluble in water, and various organic liquids can be used for this purpose according to the invention, among which may be mentioned aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene and toluene, hydrocarbons. chlorinated aliphatics such as chloroform and dichloroethane, ketones, such as methyl ethyl ketone and cyclohexanone, alcohols such as benzyl alcohol, aldehydes such as crotonaldehyde, benzaldehyde and furfural, esters such as ethyl and amyl acetates, and nitro aliphatic compounds such as nitroethane.

   Among the compounds of the latter group, phenols such as phenol and cresol are particularly effective.

   The aforementioned swelling agents are absorbed in the aqueous phase

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 by the reaction product. In the case where the water solubility of the swelling agent is low, and to be more precise, less than 5% by weight, it is recommended to add to the water a larger amount of the swelling agent. stronger than that which can be dissolved. The separated liquid phase which is formed by the excess of the swelling agent to be consumed quickly in the aqueous phase.

   The process according to the invention makes it possible to significantly reduce the amount of swelling agent compared to that which is necessary in the process according to the main patent, and despite this it often happens that the best results according to the invention are still obtained. .

   The advantageous results by the process according to the invention were absolutely unexpected considering the experience acquired with the products of the reaction in question. It was found that the swelling power of these reaction products in body fluids was very low, and as might be expected, would be further reduced by the high dilution of body fluids with water. This is the case in particular with organic liquids which are sparingly soluble in water and for which, to be more precise, the solubility is less than 5% by weight, the dilution then being in reality excessive.

   When introducing swelling agents which mix completely with water, such as acetone, it is often necessary to introduce a higher proportion of the swelling agent per liter of water than when that organic liquids of limited solubility are used. A suitable concentration of acetone is 10% by weight. The acetone concentration can be higher or lower, for example between 5 and 20% by weight, but when it is less than 10% the effect to be obtained according to the invention decreases significantly, while the more the concentration increases. , the more the cost of recovering acetone and the losses of this blowing agent increase.

   Excellent results are already obtained with pyridine in a concentration of about 3% by weight. The most advantageous content of blowing agents which mix completely with water depends to a large extent on the nature of these substances, as well as the temperature. Preferably, the most advantageous conditions are determined by tests in each particular case.

   In order to achieve the separation between the swelling agent and the reaction products more easily after the treatment according to the invention, preference is often given to volatile organic liquids over those which are less so.

   The examples given below relate to the treatment of a wire formed by the product of the reaction of rubber and sulfur dioxide, always obtained in the same way. For this purpose, a 6.5% solution of plasticized rubber in toluene is employed, which solution additionally contains 15% tetralin peroxide based on the weight of the rubber. This solution is forced under pressure into a spinning bath consisting of a mixture of alcohol and water in a proportion of 4: 1 by volume in which sulfur dioxide is dissolved in a proportion of 180 g / 1. The temperature of the spinning bath is -5 C.

   The yarn thus obtained is rinsed with water at 20 ° C. and dried, and therefore it does not contain any organic liquid at the start of the treatment described in the examples given below.

     Example 1 - This example relates to comparative tests in which the reaction product is dyed with the acetate dye "acetoquinone black N.B.N." The dye is applied as a 0.067% dispersion in water. 75 liters of this dispersion are consumed per kilogram of the reaction product of the rubber and the sulfur dioxide. After introducing the skein to be dyed into the dye bath, the temperature of this bath is raised over 15 minutes from room temperature to 80 ° C. and this temperature is kept constant for another 15 minutes.

   In the absence of a swelling agent, only a brown tint is obtained under the conditions indicated above. In contrast, a dark black color is obtained when the dye bath contains 10% by weight of ketone.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

     A dark black color is also obtained with each of the following additions to the dye bath: 3% by weight of pyridine, 2% by weight of benzene, 2% by weight of chloroform, 3% by weight of methyl ethyl ketone, 2% by weight of methyl ethyl ketone. weight of cyclohexanone, 0.3% by weight of phenol, 0.3% by weight of cresol.

   Example 2 - This example relates to results with Java Red Acid Stain. The dye content of the dye bath is 0.027% by weight. 75 liters of the dye bath are consumed per kilogram of the reaction product of rubber and sulfur dioxide. The duration of the treatment and the temperature curve have the same characteristics as in Example 1.

   In the absence of the swelling agent, the reaction product does not absorb dye. A slight dyeing is obtained with a dye bath containing 10% by weight of acetone or 3% by weight of pyridine, 2% by weight of benzene, 2% by weight of chloroform, 3% by weight of methyl ethyl ketone , or 2% by weight of cyclohexanone.

   Example 3 - The tests of example 2 were carried out with a reaction product in the form of a thread, which immediately spun was immersed in a 1% solution of cetyl pyridine bromide in water at a temperature of 80 C, then rinsed with water at 20 C and dried. In the absence of the swelling product, a slight dyeing is obtained with this product, but by adding a swelling agent as described in Example 2, a dark red color is obtained which is resistant to washing.

     Example-4 - The product of the reaction in the form of a wire obtained under the conditions of the paragraph preceding Example 1 is immersed in a 0.1% solution of melamine in water, to which is added 2 % by weight of benzene. The temperature of the solution is 55 ° C. After a stay of 10 minutes in this solution, perfect thermal stability is obtained. In the absence of a blowing agent, some improvement in the thermostability of the reaction product in a 0.1% solution of melamine in water at 55 ° C. can only be obtained if the Treatment with the stabilizer solution continues for a few hours.
