 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 possible.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  IMPROVEMENTS TO ANTI-DIFFUSING GRILLS.

   It is known that the greater part of the secondary radiation produced by the radiographed body can be eliminated by interposing an anti-scattering grid or screen between it and the radiographic plate. The latter is generally made up of thin strips of lead (or other opaque material) and thicker light wood (or other transparent material) alternately arranged and oriented in such a way that their extended plane always passes through the point of emission. X-ray radiation, even when it moves (stereoradiography or stratigraphy).

  It is also known that in order to avoid the formation on the radiograph of the trace of the screen, the latter is given a movement perpendicular to the mean orientation of the plates. This translation, which must last for the entire time of the exposure, could be carried out at any speed, if the emission of the X-rays were absolutely uniform and continuous, provided however that the length of this displacement is greater than a certain number. step (if we designate by "step" the interval between two lead plates).

     But, generally, the X-ray emission is intermittent because the radiogenic tube is fed by a high voltage, single-phase, rectified alternating current source, 'so that we have 50 or 100 radiation emissions. X per second, depending on whether one rectifies one or both alternations of the alternating current (at 50 periods).

   In the first case we find that the duration of each emission
 EMI1.1
 radiation, insofar as we consider 1182 pa; rtiecutià.e (ji $ str; sehsibly equal to the duration of an alternation. The dead time is therefore approximately equal to the useful time when the two vibrations are rectified , and at three times that time when only one alternation is used.

   It is known that the periodic illumination of the uniform displacement of a periodic image gives rise to the well-known phenomenon of stroboscopy. Frame images are frequently found on x-rays which are due to a similar cause.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   The analytical examination of the phenomenon made it possible to delimit in a precise manner the conditions under which the erasure of the traces of the frame can be obtained and the stroboscopic phenomenon avoided.

   By denoting by p the pitch of the screen in mm., By a the displacement of the screen during an alternation of the current., By K a constant coefficient which depends only on the geometrical blurring (function of the dimensions of the focus, of the distances at the focus of the grid and of the film), the relative thickness of the opaque and transparent plates of the weft, the quality and the relative duration of the X-ray emission and the contrast factor of l 'photographic emulsion, the exposure time t minimum to obtain the erasure of the frame is given by the formulas
 EMI2.1
 when the two half waves are rectified o when only one half wave is rectified.

   In old frames which have a very large pitch, a stroboscopic effect can be obtained giving a stroboscopic image of p pitch.

   2 The formulas (1) and (2) then become:
 EMI2.2
 By analogy, the images of steps * would give the formulas:
 EMI2.3

The application of these formulas has led the applicant to establish a mechanical movement which, associated with a given frame, satisfies the conditions of the calculation and defines the means of the invention characterized by the following technical functions:

   1) - The screen is given a uniform translation speed in constant ratio with the frequency of the power supply network of the radiogenic source, this speed being sufficiently high so that radiographs without apparent strobographic shadows are obtained. , even at the shortest exposure times, and being, moreover, such that the number of steps which pass in front of a fixed point during the exposure time is greater than the inverse of the minimum of the perceptible contrast., which depends on elsewhere photographic conditions.

  2) - We give the grid an alternating movement with a passage from the uniform speed + V to the uniform speed -V in a time as short as

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 possible. This reciprocating movement, by continuing indefinitely, makes it possible to obtain exposure times of as long a duration as is necessary.

  3) - The stroke of the grid is strictly determined by the time the speed is reversed, so as to avoid any stroboscopic image of the frame on the radiograph, this stroke being thus limited in order to reduce the bulk of the frame. the frame.

    4) - The start and stop of the movement is controlled at one of the ends of the stroke, so that, in long poses, the first reverse gear is always carried out after a complete journey of the stroke in order to make negligible the duration of disturbance due to the uniform movement with respect to that of the total displacement, whatever the duration of the exposure time.

  5) - The orientation of the screen and its movement are changed in two directions perpendicular to the frame of the grid integral with the radiographic table depending on whether the blades must be oriented in the longitudinal direction for oblique examinations or stratigraphies, or in the transverse direction for stereoradiographies.

   By way of example, which moreover has no limiting nature, but given for the sole purpose of making the characteristics and advantages of the invention better understood, an anti-scattering grid will be described which implements it.

  FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the grid, the axis of the pattern of which is arranged parallel to that of the radiological table.

  FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the grid, the axis of the frame of which is arranged perpendicular to the axis of the radiological table.

   The same elements are designated by the same numbers and references in the description and in the two figures.

   The frame 1 is mounted in a metal frame 2 which can slide between four rollers 3 whose axes are integral with a plate 4 which can be placed in the frame of the grid, or in accordance with FIG. 2, either in accordance with Figure 1.

   The weft is constantly returned in the same direction by a tension spring 5, one end of which is fixed to the weft and the other end of which is integral with the plate 4.

   In the position corresponding to Figure 1, the spring returns the frame against the roller 6. In the position in Figure 2, against the roller 7.

  In the latter case, the roller 7 moves in the slide 8 integral with the grid.

   The mechanism giving the weft its reciprocating motion is as follows:
We see at 9 the electric motor equipped with a speed reducer, at 10, a transmission system by pulleys and chain, and at 11 an angle pinion, actuating a transmission shaft 12 on which a bell cam is wedged. 13 and a disc comprising a notch 14. In the slot of the bell cam 13, a roller 15 can be driven and transmit, by means of levers, a reciprocating movement to a sliding rod 16, one end of which is provided. a guide slide 17, inside which moves the roller 18 integral with the three-arm lever 19. It is easy to understand that, thanks to the movement of the rotation of the bell cam 13, the lever 19 is driven by a reciprocating movement around the axis 20 integral with the frame of the grid.

   By means of rollers 6 or 7, the weft is thus animated with a movement perpendicular or parallel to the axis of the table.

   To ensure that the weft is stopped at the same end of its travel, the electrical circuit is established as follows: a finger 21 secured to a lever cuts the contacts 22 when it falls into the eneo-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 che of the disc 14. The latter is wedged on the shaft 12, so as to cut off the contact when the weft is at the end of its travel. A brake, the drum of which is wedged on the shaft of the motor 9, comes into action as soon as the current is cut in the circuit of the electromagnet 23.

   The electrical circuit is made according to the diagram of FIG. 1, at 24 is shown the current source and at 25 the switch allowing the starting of the motor.
The operation of this device is as follows:, when the switch 25 is closed, the current releases the brake 23, and the motor 9 turns the shaft 12.

   The lever 19 transmits an alternating movement to the weft 1. On opening the switch 25, the contact 22 maintains the current closed, - as long as the finger 21 has not fallen into the notch 14, at this time. the current is cut, the brake 25 blocked, the motor stops and the weft is placed at the end of its travel, from where it can start again when the switch 25 is first closed. It is understood that depending on the closing time of the latter, the frame will be able to perform a variable but integer number of reciprocating movements, that it will always start from the same starting point.
