 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

  PROCESS FOR THE TREATMENT OF METALLIC PAPER AND FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF ELECTRIC CAPACITORS USING THIS PAPER.

   This invention relates to the manufacture of coiled capacitors formed from a metallized dielectric and constitutes an improvement or a modification of the invention disclosed in Main Patent No. 462,976.

  The main patent describes a method and apparatus for demetallizing strips of an extremely thin metallized paper sheet or web which is subsequently used in the manufacture of capacitors.

   The object of the present invention is to provide capacitors the dielectrics of which are formed from materials other than the paper referred to in the main patent. A large number of plastics which are usually insulators have been discovered in recent years. Some of these materials are capable of being transformed into sheets and among these sheet materials it is possible to obtain some of an extremely low thickness although retaining their coherence and exhibiting a notable resistance to tensile forces. of this nature, although easily convertible into sheets are relatively stretchable when subjected to tension.

   It has been found that easily stretchable materials of this kind do not perform well when metallized and coiled in the form of a capacitor because the tendency to elongate under the effect of tension can cause rupture of the material. the metallic film. But it has also been found that many such less extensible materials not only can be metallized film and wound up as a capacitor without damage to the metallization, but can also be strip demetallized by a process. similar to that described in the main patent.

   The present invention relates to a variant of the method claimed in the main patent according to which the dielectric used instead of being paper consists of an insulating plastic material under

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 shape of a thin sheet so as not to stretch excessively in this form.

   The materials suitable for use for the purposes of the present invention are firstly chosen from those which do not stretch excessively under tensile forces. By materials which do not elongate excessively are meant those which when in the form of a metallized sheet do not elongate sufficiently to rupture the metallization film when subjected to the tension necessary to effect the film. winding. Among these materials, polystyrene is very advantageous and other materials which are not more elastic than polystyrene are also normally suitable for use in accordance with the invention.

   For example, reconstituted cellulose sheets such as those sold under the trademark "Cellophane" can be used although for some purposes they are not sufficiently electrically insulating. Other materials which can be used are the ethenoid polymers which include the polystyrenes mentioned above as well as vinyl, acrylic and ethylene plastics in sheets. Some of these materials can be mentioned by name as being the most important and they are polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride and polymethyl methacrylate.

  In addition, certain cellulose ethers can also be used, for example cellulose acetate and nitrate.

   According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the dielectric consists of a core of an ethenoid polymer, for example polystyrene, with a thickness of the order of 15 microns.

   An example of an execution of the method according to the invention will be described below by way of example. A polystyrene sheet having a thickness of the order of 15 microns is metallized by means of an extremely thin conductive layer of aluminum, preferably by a known method of vacuum condensing of vapors. aluminum on the dielectric. The thickness of the aluminum layer can be on the order of 0.02 to 0.1 microns.

   The metallized web is then passed through an apparatus such as that described in the main patent (as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of this patent) so as to demetallize it in strips and cut it according to those. here to form polystyrene ribbons which can then be wound up to form a capacitor winding. We then add connection terminals.
