 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

   D'autres objets et avantages de l'invention ressortiront de la description du procédé et de la forme d'exécution spécifique de l'in- ventiono . Dans les dessins ci-annexés - la figure 1 est une vue en élévation d'une ébauche de fer- meture ou de couvercle et d'un récipient auquel l'ébauche doit être appli- quée, une partie de l'ébauche étant montrée en coupe et une matrice d'es- tampage   destinées   par la pression qu'elle exerce sur la fermeture ou cou- vercle, à en opérer le scellement sur l'extrémité du   récipient,   étant mon- trée en position au-dessus de l'ébauche; - la figure 2 est une vue .en élévation d'un récipient et une coupe partielle d'une fermeture, après que l'ébauche de la figure 1 a été appliquée sur le récipient selon le procédé de la présente invention;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

    CONTAINER SEALING PROCEDURE.

     The present invention relates to the sealing of containers and more particularly to a method of applying closures or lids to containers. In container closures, sealing is effected by pressing the sealing material against one or more sealing surfaces of the end of the container within the closure:

  'or.lid. It is obviously desirable to use for this purpose compressible or plastically deformable materials, such as cork or soft rubber, but, as these materials are not always readily available or as they are. relatively expensive, the use of cheaper and less compressible materials, such as paper, pulp board or the like, becomes practically necessary. These relatively incompressible materials must be held, by a non-elastic force, in intimate contact with the sealing surface of the container, in order to ensure a true seal.

   When the pressure keeping the interior linings of these materials in sealing contact is released, these interior linings lose their sealing effectiveness, because their slight compressibility is permanent. Therefore, when using these materials for interior linings every effort is made to prevent any decrease in pressure keeping the interior trim in sealing contact. This problem is not particularly important when it comes to screw-type closures, because the pressure gradually increases during the sealing operation when the closure or the cover is screwed onto the cylinder. container and therefore the closure does not have the opportunity to relax.

  However, considerable difficulties are sometimes encountered when making use of these relatively incompressible materials in closures or lids of the pressure-applied type or in closures or lids to be fitted on a container by modifying the shape of the skirt of the container. closing; in which the fixation device can relax slightly, when the pressure exerted by the sealing device ceases

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 to be applied.

   For ease of description, sealing materials such as paper, board, pulp board, and the like, will be referred to as incompressible materials, although they are slightly compressible, but are compressible. permanently.

  The expression "container finish" as used herein refers to the part of the container surrounded by the closure or cover, while the expression "Sealing surface" as used herein refers to that portion of the end of the container which is in contact with the interior liner.

   The present invention contemplates forming a top seal and a side seal between the end of the container and an interior lining of incompressible material, the shape of the interior lining being changed around the outer periphery of the orifice of the container, which provides a hermetic seal within wide tolerance limits for any particular end of a glass container. The present invention also contemplates the formation of the aforementioned top and side seals in combination with any method involving the application. direct downward pressure on the upper part of the closure or cover, without subjecting it. closing to any rotation or screwing movement.

   The present invention relates to a method of forming a hermetic seal between the end of a container and the inner linings of the closure or lids made of paper, pulp or pulp board and other similar incompressible materials. A further object of the present invention is a method of applying closures or lids to containers, in which the interior lining is adapted by deformation to several sealing surfaces on the end of the container.

   The subject of the invention is also a method of applying closures or lids to containers., In which an internal closure lining made of incompressible material is adapted, by deformation, to the upper part and to the sides of the end of the container. container and wherein the inner liner is maintained in sealing contact with said top and said sides of the container end.

   Other objects and advantages of the invention will emerge from the description of the process and of the specific embodiment of the invention. In the accompanying drawings - Figure 1 is an elevational view of a blank for closure or cover and of a container to which the blank is to be applied, part of the blank being shown in cup and a stamping die intended by the pressure which it exerts on the closure or cover, to effect the sealing thereof on the end of the container, being shown in position above the blank ; - Figure 2 is an elevational view of a container and a partial section of a closure, after the blank of Figure 1 has been applied to the container according to the method of the present invention;

   - Figure 3 is an elevational view after vertical section, of a variant of the closure or cover blank shown in Figures 1 and 2; - Figure 4 is an elevational view of a container and

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 the closure or lid of Figure 3, showing the closure in the sealed position on the container., part of the closure and the container being shown in cross section, and - Figure 5 is a plan view of the blank closure shown in Figures 3 and 4.

   In accordance with the present invention, a hermetic seal is produced between the sealing surface of the container and an interior lining of incompressible sealing material, by deforming the marginal surface of the lining into intimate contact with the gasket. upper part and the sides of the end of the container, by the application of a direct downward pressure, the interior lining being retained in place by the superposition of a part of the skirt on the deformed marginal surface of said filling. This part of the skirt and therefore the marginal surface of the liner are held firmly in sealing contact with the container, by a device ensuring a suitable closure, disposed on the lower part of the skirt of the closure.

  In the practice of the present invention, a closure blank is employed comprising an upper part which is preferably planar or only slightly convex, a skirt extending downwardly from said planar surface. , an annular shoulder or bulge defining an inwardly opening groove in the skirt at a distance from the upper part in question, and a packing disc or ring disposed in the groove or against the annular shoulder and held there, preferably by a suitable skirt structure. Before the blank is applied to the container, the interior lining takes the form of a disc or ring with a diameter slightly greater than the outside diameter of the container. the sealing surface of the end of the container,

   to provide sufficient material to form both a side seal and a top seal and to allow a sufficient marginal area to meet maximum tolerance limits in the end of the container.

   During the sealing operation, the aforementioned blank is placed freely over the orifice of a container and both are then moved relative to a sealing head to a stamping die, the contact end of which has practically the same outline as the upper part of the blank. When the blank applied freely to the upper end of the container and the. stamping dies are brought into contact with each other, sufficient pressure is applied axially to the blank so that the shoulder or the top wall of the groove in the blank. deforms the marginal surface of the inner liner, so as to fold it over the sides of the end of the container.

  This operation also has the effect of bringing the inner liner into intimate contact with the upper sealing surface of the end of the container. When the inner liner is folded over the sides of the container by the shoulder or bulge, a part of the skirt over this shoulder or bulge slides over the deformed liner and securely holds the edge of the container. the latter in intimate contact with the sides of the end of the container. The part of the skirt, located above the shoulder or the bulge, has a sufficiently small diameter compared to the total diameter of the end of the container and has a thickness double the deformed marginal surface of the interior lining. to press and hold this marginal surface against the lateral sealing surface.

   When the above operation described is completed, the closure or the cover is fixed to the container by any satisfactory means, for example by modifying the shape of the lower part of the skirt according to the thread. that the end of the container has. The closure or cover may be secured to the container by a tab and bead arrangement of a direct snap closure type cover. In this type of cover, the tabs and the filling

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 let cooperate with each other during the deformation stage of the interior lining.

   During the operation where the internal lining is deformed around the periphery; ¯ of the opening of the receptacle, any rotational or screwing movement of the blank must be avoided, because such a movement tends to this moment to move the interior trim and produce a defective seal.

   '
Referring now to the drawings in which two embodiments of the present invention are illustrated, it can be seen that the blank of FIG. 1 comprising a flat upper part 1, a plain skirt 2, a bead 3 to reinforce the edge an annular bulge 4 and a flat interior liner 5 arranged in the groove defined by the bulge, is shown resting on the orifice of a container 6, before being pressed onto the end of the container. receptacle, by stamping die B, shown above 1-blank.

  Before the blank is sealed by pressing on the container., The inner liner 5 with a diameter greater than that of the blank is clamped in the groove inside the annular bulge 4 of the skirt 2 and thus is in the groove. 'impossibility of being dislodged from the blank or moved therein, before this blank is applied to the container.

   The stamping die B may form part of a bottle capper, such as that described in U.S. Patent No. 1,674,266 to Sharp. Substitution of the stamping die according to the present invention for that shown in the Sharp patent does not change the mode of operation of the capper. With the direct press-applied type closure, the stamping die can perform the entire operation of pressing the inner liner into the sealing position and securing the closure to the container, or it can perform the entire operation of pressing the inner liner into the sealing position and securing the closure to the container. can work in cooperation with a member which forms the tabs in the skirt of the closure, during the sealing operation.

   For sealing - the container 6, on the opening of which is placed the blank for the closures as shown in figure 1, and the stamping die B, which is designed to adapt to the contour of the upper part beforehand. formed by the blank with which it copied, are moved relative to one another. The pressure applied to the upper part 1 and to the annular bulge 4 causes the upper wall of the groove constituting a shoulder 7 to bear against the edge 8 of the lining 5 and modifies the shape of this edge around the periphery of the end of the container.

   The reduced diameter portion 9 of the skirt slides over the deformed edge 8, so as to press the liner further against the side of the end of the container and to stretch the planar part of the liner into intimate contact with it. the upper sealing surface. The reduced diameter portion 9 maintains the edge 8 of the liner in its modified form and retains it against the edges of the end of the container, until the closure or cover is removed from the container.

   As shown in Figure 2, when the liner has been deformed on the periphery of the container opening and when the reduced diameter portion 9 of the skirt has been pressed over the deformed edge of the liner, as shown. above, the closure is fixed in the sealed position relative to the container, by deforming the lower part of the skirt in accordance with the threaded configuration of the end of the container or the annular bead in the container. The structure in which the skirt is deformed to fit an annular bead is not shown in the drawings; however, it will be appreciated that the present process and the blank can easily be adapted to such a structure.

   As shown in Figure 4, in which the reference notations correspond to those of Figures 1 and 2, the tabs 10 of the closure or cover have been pressed below the bead 11.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 of the container. This coperation was accomplished during the deformation of the packing, from the shape shown in figure 3 to that shown in figure 4.

  In this variant the interior lining is retained in the closure before the tabs are applied to it :) as shown in figure 5.

   By varying the diameter within part 9, the pressure exerted by this part can be made greatest at the point or points of greatest importance. Therefore, the pressure against the reduced diameter portion on the edge of the liner can be slightly increased, particularly at a point near the lower edge thereof, by reducing the diameter of the reduced diameter portion near the shoulder. or the annular bulge, as shown in Figure 3.

   In the present specification, the description of the present invention has been directed primarily to the formation of hermetic seals by means of closures, the interior linings of which are of pulp or paste board or similar relatively incompressible materials.

  These materials have been cited primarily because the invention is particularly suited to forming hermetic seals using such materials, but this particular reference should in no way be construed as limiting the scope of the present invention. other easily compressible or plastically deformable materials, such as cork and rubber, being perfectly suited to the practice of the present invention.
