 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

.BALLAST FOR HOT CATHOD FLUORESCENCE LIGHTING LAMPS.

When supplying and operating fluorescent lamps of the hot cathode type on alternating current, three potential differences must be taken into account, on the one hand that of the network, and on the other hand that of operation. of the lamp and finally that which is necessary for the periodic re-ignition of the latter at each alternation.

To adjust the voltage and the intensity of the operating and supply current of the lamp in relation to the voltage of the network, a ballast or compensator type of lamp in question is inserted between the latter and the lamp and constituted in principle by a self-induction coil.

The greater the difference between the operating voltage of the lamp and that of the network, the greater must be the coefficient of the necessary self-induction. This has the drawback of requiring a large-dimension salt coil, which is also expensive, the cosine phi of the installation is very bad and does not meet the requirements of electricity distribution companies. ., it is necessary to rectify the cosine phi and to use for this purpose capacitors, which constitutes a remedy all the more expensive as the voltage of the supply network is lower.

The present invention is a ballast of a new design which overcomes these drawbacks and gives an economical and practical solution, ensuring the correct operation of fluorescent lamps by a sufficient supply voltage while at the same time effecting a significant rectification of the voltage. The operating co-sinus thus makes it possible to dispense completely with the capacitors heretofore used for this purpose, or at least to use only capacitors of significantly lower capacity and cheaper.

The ballast according to the invention is constituted in principle by two windings or coils, placed in series and conditioned as a self-transformer with inductive characteristic, the fluorescence tube being normally connected in branch at two points of said windings which give a potential difference suitable for switching on and maintaining the fluorescent tube in service

Two or more lamps can be placed in series, each of them being supplied by the secondary of an auto-transformer corresponding to each of them, a special winding raising the voltage across each of the starters of the various lamps.

In a particular case of application where two lamps of suitable potential are arranged in series, their end filaments being heated by the current determined by the starter, the intermediate filaments of the successive tubes being heated by the secondary of an additional transformer whose the primary is inserted in series in the starter circuit.

In certain other cases of application, in particular for the use of several lamps in series, it may be necessary to lower the supply voltage of the starter common to the lamps in series, so that it does not persist. operate after ignition, and for this purpose, a secondary winding interposed in the starter circuit is conditioned so that its potential difference is subtracted from that which supplies the lamps, the filaments of the cathodes not supplied directly by the starter being heated by the secondaries of a transformer, the primary of which is in series in the starter circuit.

In all cases of application of the ballast according to the invention, a capacitor can be placed in series in the main circuit, so that its reactive effect combined in an inductive assembly results in antistroboscopic lighting.

It has been found that by using the ballasts according to the invention, it is possible to rectify the cosine phi within the limits required by the electricity distribution companies, without having to resort to additional capacitors or by using at most that low capacity capacitors. In addition, by means of judicious use of materials and materials, the ballast according to the invention ensures a substantially increased lighting effect of the lamp (s); conversely, for the same luminous effect with the ballasts according to the invention, the watted consumption is appreciably reduced.

In order to bring out the particularities more clearly, with reference to the accompanying drawings, some preferred forms of application of the ballast according to the invention will be described below, by way of examples.

Figure 1 is a simple diagram of the application of the ballast according to the invention.

Fig. 2 is an application diagram of the ballast according to the invention comprising an additional secondary winding for the operation of an ionization starter.

Fig. 3 is an application diagram in which the network voltage is raised by an auxiliary winding, another booster winding being interposed in the starter network.

Fig. 4 is an application diagram of the ballast according to the invention with two lamps in series, each having their own starter.

Fig 5 represents a variant of Fig 4, in which two lamps in series are ignited by a single common starter, having in its circuit the primary of a transformer, the secondary of which heats the intermediate filaments of the lamps.

Figo 6 is an application diagram of the ballast according to the invention with three lamps in series with introduction into the common starter circuit, of a subtractive voltage winding, as well as of the primary of a transformer, the secondaries of which heat the intermediate filaments.

The realization of the rod 1 comprises the lamp 1., the starter 2, the supply conductors -2, '. Two windings and 2. and their common core 6 constitute an autotransformer with inductive characteristic, the lamp 1 being branched at the ends of the winding 2. by the conductors 1 and 8.

In the embodiment of fig 2 are found the lamp 1, the starter 2, the supply conductors 3.-3. the windings 4, and 1, the magnetic circuit 6, the conductors 7 and 8 connected to the tubeo In the starter circuit is provided a winding 9 also undergoing the influence of the magnetic field 6 and whose function is to detect the difference of potential applied to the starter terminals, to allow its operation and the ignition of the lamp.

The realization of figo 3 comprises the tube 1, the starter 2, the conductors -1 ', the winding 4. derived this time on the network, the coil 5 raising the voltage of the network, the common magnetic circuit 6, the conductors 7 and 8. In this embodiment the lamp is derived from the two coils 4 and 2. and an additional winding 2, is inserted the starter circuit, to read the voltage across the startero.
The two in principle identical embodiments of FIGS. 1 and 2 apply when the voltage to be applied to the lamp is lower than that of the supply network, while in figo 3 the own voltage of the lamp is substantially equal to or greater than that of the supply network.

In the embodiment of the rod 4, two lamps 1 and 1 'placed in series are each provided with its own starter 2 and 2' and supplied by the conductors 3-3 '. The windings 4, 5 and 5', are arranged on the same magnetic circuit 6; the lamps are supplied by the conductors 7 and $, 7 'and 8' the auxiliary windings 2 and 9 'being arranged as in fig. 2.

This realization is suitable for the placement of two lamps in series on a network the voltage of which is greater than the sum of the two own voltages of supply and operation of these lamps.
The realization of FIG. 5 is a variant of that of FIG. 4, in which a starter 2 is common for igniting the two lamps, the intermediate filaments of which are heated by the secondary 10 of a core transformer 6 ', the primary 9 of which is in series in the starter circuit, the two lamps being derived by the conductors 7 and 8 of the coil 2. in series with the coil 1 and having a common core 6 and constituting the inductive self-transformer supplied by the conductors 3 and 3 'connected to the network.

In the embodiment of the pin 6 three lamps 1- 'and 1 "supplied by the conductors 7 and 8 are placed in series with the winding to, mounted on a magnetic circuit 6 also carrying the winding 2. on which the lamps are derived. ; an additional subtractively acting winding 12 is interposed in the starter circuit 2. In the latter circuit is further provided a winding 9 constituting the primary of a core transformer 6 ', the secondaries 10 and 11 of which supply power. respectively the circuits of the contiguous terminal filaments of the intermediate tubes.

The functioning of the above achievements and the respective functions of their organs will be defined more clearly below.
The realization of FIG. 1 is suitable for powering a lamp whose supply and operating voltage is lower than that of the network.

The coils and 5 are proportioned to determine at the terminals of the coil 5, a voltage sufficient for the supply of the lamp and its maintenance in operation, at its normal voltage, consequently, of the coupling with.characteristic, inductive of these

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

two coils between them. In this system, the starter 2 receives a sufficient voltage to short-circuit and thus cause the heating of the filaments of the lamp 1. When the circuit is opened by the starter, the excess inductor current generated, causes the ignition of the lamp which continues to operate in the usual way. The coil being inductive, regulates the current in the whole, of which the main circuit after the input 3, branches off at the output from / to the lamp 1, through the conductor 1, then returns through the conductor 8 to 3 '.

Under the influence of the current flowing in the winding 4, an induced current in the winding 5 is added in the conductor 7 and the lamp 1. the secondary circuit thus started is closed by the conductor 8 towards the winding 5. The two currents are phase-shifted with respect to each other and are added vectorially in lamp 1. Because the voltage across the latter is as close as possible to that which is necessary for its operation, the difference between the two voltages being minimum, the cosine phi approaches appreciably 1 unit.

In fig. 2 and 3 the operation is the same as in figo 1, but takes into account the fact that starters of the "Glowstarter" type require a specific voltage to come into action and switch off; the voltage at the terminals of the lamp, when it is supplied, being lower than the voltage necessary to operate the starter of this type, an auxiliary winding inserted in the circuit thereof is only used when the starter is switched on. ignition, momentarily raising the voltage across said starter.

The operating lamp drops the voltage to that which is necessary for its operation, and the winding 9, which is superimposed on or very close to the winding 5, also undergoes a voltage drop so that thanks to a prior judicious determination windings, these two added voltages become insufficient to cause unwanted starting of the starter.

In fig. 3 the power supply device for the lamp 1 comprises conductors 3 and 3 'for supplying the system, arranged at the terminals of a single coil 4, while the coil 5 gives a voltage greater than the voltage of the network, in the measure required to allow the supply and normal operation of the lamp 1 via wires 7 and 8, all the windings and 2 arranged on the same magnetic circuit 6, also exhibiting the inductive characteristics essential for the operation of the lamps of this guy. The winding .2 mounted on the same magnetic circuit is also inserted into the starter circuit and its operation is similar to that of pin 2.

Fig. 4 combines two assemblies of FIG. 2, in series with the winding 4. Their operation is similar to that of FIG. 2.

The realization of FIG. 5 is a simplification of that of fig 4, in which a single secondary 2. replaces the two secondaries 2 and 5 'of fig 4. The supply circuit of the lamps 1 and the starter and comprises the conductor 7, the left filament of lamp 1.! 1 the starter 2 'the primary 9 of a transformer, the filament of the lamp 10 and the return conductor 8. The secondary 10 of the common core transformer 6' heats the filaments contiguous extremes of lamps 1 and 1 '.

Figo 6 shows the particular case of three lamps of the type chosen to be able to operate in series on a suitable voltage network, in which we see the three 1-1'-1 "lamps mounted in series with a primary coil.
4 and derivatives on the secondary winding 5. Here, only one starter is used to simultaneously light the 3 lamps and thus avoid misfiring caused by three starters placed in series.

The starter circuit 2 comprises, when the lamps are switched on, the conductor 7. the left filament of the lamp 1 the starter itself, a step-down winding 12, mounted on the core 2, the primary 2 of a transformer, the right lamp filament 1 "and conductor 8. The two secondaries 10 and 11 mounted on the magnetic circuit 2 'with the primary ±, heat the adjacent end filaments of lamps 1. 19 and 1". The winding 12 reduces the voltage at the starter terminals during the operation of the lamps to prevent it from being reset unexpectedly.

The ballast according to the invention has the advantage of giving the installation a considerably better cosine phi than that obtained with the inductive ballasts known hitherto. In general, the cosine phi obtained by virtue of the invention meets the requirements of electricity distributors.

When the requirements in question are more severe, in order to obtain the required additional lift, it is possible to place in each of the circuits shown in the various figures a capacitor, the coupling of which is shown in broken lines. It should be noted that the capacitance of the capacitors required is only a very small fraction of that which had to be used in order to obtain the same result with known ballasts.
In addition, the various couplings by means of the ballasts according to the invention also make it possible to place in series in the main circuit (as designated by way of example, by 15 in fig. 1), a capacitor of suitable capacity to give the main circuit. system a reactive effect which, combined with fig.

1 as described, will give both lamps an anti-strobe light ;.

It has also been observed that, for an equal consumption of current, the couplings by means of the ballasts according to the invention make it possible to obtain a substantially increased light effect in the lamps.

Of course, the invention is not limited only to the embodiments described above, but also encompasses all other equivalent and derivative variants as claimed below.
