 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

   REINFORCEMENT FOR HEATER - GAS WATER.

   The present invention relates to the judicious and advantageous arrangement and arrangement of the frame containing the gas shut-off members in a gas water heater, in particular in an instantaneous water heater.

  In devices of this type, there are normally provided in the frame two independent gas stop members, namely a main stop member operable by hand and a stop member controlled by a diaphragm when water is drawn and constituting a safety in case of lack of water. Until now, the main shut-off members operable by hand have been in the form of valves. Shut-off devices are also known in which a shutter is screwed onto its seat by a thread. Such stop devices have the drawback of having fairly large sealing surfaces which slide over one another during the opening and closing movements and which, consequently, must be lubricated.

   The present invention is based on the observation that all the lubricants employed in practice are attacked by certain gases which render them inoperative. This results in the problem of creating a stop device that can be operated at. hand and in which the surfaces to be sealed can remain dry, in other words do not require lubrication. According to the invention, this problem is solved by using a shutter member which opens and closes by axial translation and which can be actuated by a switch mechanism accessible from the outside.

   In general, for example in the form of valves with a flat head, shutter members opening and closing by axial translation are known, but such valves were not controlled by hand by means of a switching mechanism; they were only used in cases where the valve was controlled by a diaphragm or a regulating device. Such a valve does not require lubrication on the sealing surfaces, as is the case, for example, for a tap wrench mounted in its plug; on the contrary, its sealing surface is completely dry.

  The passage of a member of the switching mechanism located outside the gas chamber can be sealed without any difficulty. It is, in fact., Most often, the crossing of a rod of relatively small diameter and having ,? therefore a small area.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   There are many possible embodiments of the switch mechanism of such a stop device. We can ;, for example. -provoke the axial displacement of the valve by means of an appropriate connecting rod-crank mechanism.

  Sudden switching is then easily obtained in which a spring acting in the direction of the pusher applies the crank against stops on either side of its top dead center position. A simple locking or eccentric lever can also be placed on the valve plunger and thus also achieve sudden switching when the top dead center is exceeded.

  The axial movement of the valve can also be achieved by placing a rotary control member outside the gas chamber provided with a control cam and acting on the axial position of a sliding member passing through the gas chamber. gaza If the sliding member is arranged in the form of an adjusting screw capable of rotating in addition and independently of; his. axial sliding, this rectilinearly guided transmission member can be made to act and, by rotation of the sliding member, that is to say of the adjustment screw, superimpose an additional adjustment movement.

   For various reasons, it is advantageous to mechanically separate the switching mechanism from the valve and to insert only a dynamic connection between the push-button of the switching mechanism and the axially sliding shutter member. It is then possible to constructively combine the same switching mechanism with shutter members having different dimensions and passage sections. However, a dynamic link between the switching mechanism and the shutter member has the main advantage of making it possible to actuate the shutter by two separately operable switching mechanisms, one of which is limited to opening and closing while the other allows, when the shutter member is open, to adjust the passage section between adjustable limits.

   Apart from such a main stop member arranged in the form of a switch, there is also., As indicated above, a second gas stop member which acts as a safety device in the event of a lack of gas. water and which is intended to be actuated in a known manner, also in the axial direction by a diaphragm control mechanism. In a gas frame of the water heater, it is therefore necessary to provide two shutters with axial opening and closing. According to the invention, they are arranged in such a way that one of them is actuated vertically and the other horizontally and that their transmission members cross.

   Thanks to such an arrangement, the bulk is reduced and the mounting of the frame is facilitated. It is customary to mount the safety device in case of lack of water with a vertical operating direction. An arrangement can be made such that, in the space between the diaphragm control mechanism and the gas valve located above the latter, there is provided on both sides of the horizontal connecting pipes, the one of them serving to connect the armature to the gas pipe and to receive a gas valve with horizontal control, while the other is used to receive a mechanical switching mechanism actuating the latter. The transmission mechanism of one of the valve systems can then embrace, in the form of a fork, the mechanism of the other.

   If several gas valves, with different passage sections, are given the same connection dimensions, they can be fitted as desired in the connection pipes of the same frame and thus make the latter usable for different types of fittings. 'devices.

   In such an arrangement, the switch which actuates the main shut-off member is mounted, in the form of a closed constructive element. ble crosswise, and it is secured with a cap nut. In order to enable this switch to be actuated by hand, an opening is provided in the front wall of the device through which the operating member passes, which is thus accessible from the outside. This opening has an unsightly effect and can affect the overall external appearance, apart from other drawbacks such as the risk of clogging of the device.

   According to the invention, this drawback is avoided by closing said passage opening from the inside using a kind of stamped turned or molded stopper, made of metal or plastic, this stopper being prevented from turning and preferably being fixed

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 to the cap nut by force fitting or by matting. In this way, at the same time, with simple means, a good closing of the passage opening and a safety fixing of the cap nut of the gas switch are obtained.

   Of course, the reinforcement according to the invention must be connected both to the gas supply pipe and to the water pipe. When the reinforcement is connected to these pipes, for example due to insufficiently precise adaptation of the pipe fittings, mechanical stresses and considerable stresses can occur which must be supported by the reinforcement. One of the aims of the invention is, moreover, to relieve the reinforcement of these tensions so that the binding of the various elements of the reinforcement does not suffer.

   According to the invention, the parts of the frame are supported for this purpose in the vicinity of the gas and water connection pipes, one against the other, and / or against the rear wall of the pipe. device using. of a particular medium. The connection pipes of the elements of the frame are held in position by this supporta The forces which occur when the connections are un-blocked and during installation are absorbed by the support or by the rear wall of the device , so that the frame does not have to support them.

   The description which follows, with reference to the drawings appended to. By way of non-limiting example, it will clearly be understood how the invention can be put into practice.

   FIG. 1 represents in vertical section an instantaneous bit heater comprising the reinforcement according to the invention.

   The figure shows a detail of the framework.

   Figures 2 and 3 show on a larger scale the gas switch, seen respectively from the front and in horizontal section.

   To a valve box 1 is fixed an elbow pipe 2 intended to be connected to the gas pipe. The gas inlet orifice is closed by a shutter 4, the valve of which 4a is subjected to the action of a spring 5 which tends to move it away from its seat. The valve 4a is pressed desmodromically by a rod 6 against a push rod 7 of a switching mechanism Sch which will be described later. On the anterior end of the rod 6 is placed a connecting piece 9, in the form of a pot, provided with a flange 8.

   Figures 2 and 3 show a Sch switching mechanism used for manual operation of the main shutter 4. The switch housing 10 (Figure 3) is mounted, from the front, in a gas-tight manner, in the box. valve 1 to which it is fixed by a cap nut 10 '. The push rod 7 passes through the housing 10 in a gastight slide 11.

  A cylinder 13 provided with a flange 12 is fixed to the pusher 7 and forms a damping device with a piston 14 integral with the housing. 100 A switch spring 15 bearing against the housing 10 exerts a pressure on the bracket 12 and its shape is such as to overcome that of the valve spring 5.

  In the housing 10 is mounted at 16 a crank 17 in the form of a caliper. A switching lever 18 attached thereto protrudes, through a slot 19, out of the rounded head 20 of the housing. A ring 21 is fixed to the crank 17 and it covers the slot 19 whatever the position of the crank 17. On either side of the ring 21 are mounted, on the crank 17, two connecting rods 22- 22 which are, at their other end, articulated to the push rod 7. The arrangement of the crank mechanism 7-17-22 is such that, when the switching lever 18 is rotated by 180, the top dead center of the crank 17 is exceeded.

   In the switch housing 10 is fixed a guide rod 23 on which slides a stop plate 25 provided with a nut thread 24.

  The nut 24 is mounted on the threaded end 26 of an adjustment rod 27 which passes through the housing 10 in a gas-tight slide 28. A coil spring 29 resting on the one hand on the housing 1a and on the other hand on the stopper plate 25 tends to push the latter backwards together with the threaded rod 27. A collar 30 provided on the latter applies dynamically

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 ment, under the effect of the spring 29, on a control cam 31. This is located on an adjusting ring 32 mounted so as to be able to rotate on the housing 10. The stop plate 25 is arranged so that it can be used. stop at the flange 8 of the head 9 of the valve stem.

   The device thus described operates as follows:
When the switching lever 18 occupies the position shown in Figures 2 and 3, the valve 4 is held closed by the rod 7. The spring 15 then presses the lever 18, via the crank mechanism 22-17, against the one of its end stops in the slot 19. If the lever 18 is tilted by 180, as indicated in broken lines in FIG. 3, it is also applied by the spring 15 in this position against the other stop of the slot 19, because the crank 17 is then located on the other side of its top dead center (sudden switching), p The pusher 7 is then pulled by the crank mechanism 17-22,

     so that the valve stem 6 can follow and the valve spring 5 can open the valve 4. However, the flange 8 of the head 9 of the valve stem abuts against the plate 25, so that the valve 4 cannot open completely, but only insofar as the position of the stop plate 25 permits it. By rotating the head 33, provided with a helical slot, of the adjustment rod 27 one can slide the stopper plate. stop plate 25 and thus adjust the maximum opening of the valve 4 to the desired size.

   In gas water heaters, the desired water temperature can thus be adjusted with the threaded rod 27. If the adjusting ring 32 is rotated, the stop plate 25 is offset with the rod 27. , by the effect of the spring 29, depending on the position of the cam 31, the plate 25 driving the valve rod 6 against the action of the valve spring 5.

  The valve 4 can therefore be more or less closed by rotation of the adjustment ring 32 without affecting the basic adjustment carried out by means of the adjustment rod 27. The adjustment ring 32 consequently allows even when the switching lever 18 is set to the open position, to set the water temperature to any lower value, for example for the shower.

   If the switching lever 18 is placed in the closed position, thanks to the damper 13-14, a too violent change of position which could be caused by the switching spring 15 is prevented. The switching mechanism which is housed in the housing 10 forms an inherently closed constructive unit which can be combined with valves of other dimensions without having to change anything. It is then sufficient to replace the valve 4 in box 1 with another valve having a different passage section, but the same connection dimensions.

   The valve box 1 in which are housed, on the one hand, the valve 4 and, on the other hand, the switching device Sch, has a connection pipe 3 directed upwards and to which the gas burner is connected. 34. The gas outlet from the valve box 1 to the connection pipe 3 takes place through another valve 35 which a spring 36 tends to close. The rod 37 of the valve 35, which crosses at a right angle the valve rod 6, passes through a stuffing box 38 to go to the diaphragm 39 of a water switch 40. The rod 6 embraces in the form of a fork. the stuffing box 38 and the rod 37 which slides therein, as shown in particular in FIG.

   As soon as, after opening the draw-off tap 41, the water circulates through the water switch inserted in the water pipes 42-43, the membrane 39 is lifted by the water pressure which prevails below it and, through the valve stem 37, the valve 35 is opened against the pressure of the spring 36. It is only when the two valves, namely the valve 4 actuated by the valve. Sch switching device and the valve 35 controlled by the water switch 40, are opened that the burner 34 receives gas which then ignites at the pilot 44, The water flowing in the pipe 43 circulates in tubes 45, around the heating box 46 which is closed at the top by a slat block 48 crossed by water tubes 7.

   The water is thus heated instantly in a known manner.

   The frame, which as a whole has a cross shape and

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 which consists of the valve box 1, the connection pipe 3 and the water switch 40 must be connected ,, on the one hand ;, by the elbow 2, to the gas pipe, and, on the other hand, to the water pipe 42.

   So that, during the assembly of the apparatus, there is no mechanical stresses arising between the described parts of the reinforcement resulting from a lack of precise adaptation of the pipe fittings, a support 49 is provided which, d 'on the one hand, rests against the rear wall 50 of the apparatus and which, on the other hand, embraces the gas connection pipes 2 and water 51 and ensures their reciprocal position.

   The entire apparatus is closed to the outside by a casing 52 which has a stamped opening 53. The switching device Sch is accessible from the outside through this opening. On the cap nut 10 'of the switching device Sch rests a cup 54 which closes the opening 53 from the inside. The cup 54 is prevented from turning by a pin 55 which passes through it and which is fixed to the box. valve 1 and this cup is secured to the nut 10 'by matting or by force fitting.

  It is thus also prevented from coming off.

   It goes without saying that, without departing from the scope of the invention, it is possible to make modifications to the embodiment which has just been described.
