 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 a) réduction du coût de la fabrication du bras ouvert, grâce à la suppression de la fente et à la facilité de forgeage, - - b) possibilité de polir parfaitement la surface intérieure du canal en C, d'une manière rapide et efficace, pour empêcher la formation des queues de fibres et les inconvénients qui en dérivent; o) possibilité de chromer ou de- nickeler parfaitement la sur- face sur laquelle passe la mèche; d) facilité de mise en place de la mèche dans le bras de l'ai- lette ; e) moins de ruptures de la mèche et, conséquemment, moins d'ar- rêts de la machine grâce à la disparition des queues; f) ailette plus légère, le bras porte-mèche étant allégé, et le bras plein d'équilibrage étant conséquemment de poids réduit;

   FIN FOR BENCH WITH PINS.

   The fins for spindle banks have a central part (or hub), intended to be mounted on the upper end of the spindle, a tubular arm inside which the wick moves during its revolution around the spool. formation, a compressor articulated at the lower end of the tubular arm which brings the bit to the spool, and a massive arm acting as a counterweight to the tubular arm.

   In known constructions, the tubular arm has a narrow sinuous longitudinal slot extending along the outer side of the arm, through which the bit is introduced into the arm. The inside of the tube, as well as the slot, must be perfectly polished so as not to stop the fibers which, when felt, form tails. These tails quite often unite at the wick, alter the count and sometimes form a plug which causes the wick to break.

   The builder must therefore take great care in polishing the inner surface of the tubular arm and its slot. This operation is long, expensive and imperfect, and is only completed after prolonged use of the bench, by the bit itself, which over time manages to polish the surface on which it slides.
The invention proposes to eliminate these difficulties, by replacing the narrow and sinuous slot with a very wide opening, so as to obtain a C-section of the arm, instead of an annular section as hitherto.

   This opening is such that the bit, while being guided from the hub to the compressor, is kept pressed against the bottom of the C-section by the air pressure during the rotation of the vane, aided in this. by centrifugal force.

   The advantages resulting from the C-shape of the arm are as follows:

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 a) reduction of the manufacturing cost of the open arm, thanks to the elimination of the slot and the ease of forging, - - b) possibility of perfectly polishing the inner surface of the C-channel, in a fast and efficient manner, to prevent the formation of fiber tails and the inconveniences resulting therefrom; o) possibility of perfectly chroming or nickel-coating the surface over which the wick passes; d) ease of positioning the bit in the arm of the blade; e) less breakage of the bit and, consequently, less machine downtime thanks to the disappearance of the shanks; f) lighter fin, the bit holder arm being lightened, and the solid balancing arm being consequently of reduced weight;

   g) reduction in the amount of metal used.

   The accompanying drawings show a pin bank fin according to the invention.

   Figure 1 is a front view of the pin bench fin of the tupe generally used heretofore.

   Figure 2 is a front view of the improved fin according to the invention.

   Figures 3 to 5 are three cross sections on a larger scale of the tubular arm of the known type fin, respectively by aa, bb and ca of figure 1, and show the positions taken by the bit during the vane rotation.

   Figure 6 is a cross section of the improved fin drill guide arm according to Figure 2 and shows the position of the drill bit in end sections d-d and middle e-e, respectively.

   In FIG. 1, 1 indicates the central or middle part of the blade, and 2 the hollow guide arm of the bit. In the fins known hitherto, the arm is tubular, as shown in FIGS. 3 to 5, and is provided on the outside, in the mid-plane, with a slot 3 serving to introduce the bit for carrying out the work.

   In the improved fin according to the invention (FIGS. 2 and 6), on the other hand, the guide arm 2 of the bit has a C-shaped section, as shown in FIG. 6, which makes it possible to obtain ., in the direction of rotation, a very wide opening, as indicated by x in figure 6. Thanks to this wide opening, it is possible to perfectly polish the surface 4 of the bottom of the section in C and, if necessary, even to chrome or nickel it in a perfect way, with the certainty from the beginning of the absence of any roughness which could create obstacles to the sliding of the fibers of the wick and give rise to to the disadvantages mentioned above.

   Under the effect of the air pressure, and thanks to the centrifugal force, the bit 9 is held against the bottom of the C-section, as shown in figure 6, instead of taking the positions shown in Figures 3 to 5 in the tubular arms of the fins known heretofore, which are closed and in which air pressure cannot act on the wick.

   Figure 3 shows the position taken in the construction known by the bit 9 in the end sections a-a; Figure 4 shows the position taken by the bit in the intermediate sections b-b; Fig. 5 shows the position taken by the bit in the central section .c-c.

   In the construction according to the invention, the bit 9 assumes in the end sections the position indicated on the left half of FIG. 6, and, in the intermediate section, the position indicated on the right half of FIG. 6.

   In figures 1 and 2, 5 indicates the compressor articulated at 6 to the wick-holder arm 2.7 indicates the mass of the compressor which produces, by the action of centrifugal force during the rotation of the fin, the pressure of the wick on the spool. 8 finally indicates the massive arm, welded by means of the fin and intended to balance the system during the rotation which, as is clearly shown by the comparison of Figures 1 and 2, is shorter in the improved fin according to the invention.
