<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

IMPROVEMENT OF PULSA @ OIRE FLOW REACTORS.
It has already been proposed, in reactors whose jet is produced by a continuous flow of gas (turbo-reactors and stato-reactors), to dilute the mass of hot gas coming from the turbine or from the control chamber. bustion, by mixing it with a mass of cold air sucked in at a suitable point, with a view to increasing the thrust by increasing the mass of gas ejected without increasing consumption. We have thus tried to play on the fact that the thrust produced is equal to the difference in the quantities of movements of the mass of incoming air and of the mass of outgoing air, while the energy expended is proportional to the difference in kinetic energies of the incoming air and the outgoing air, the difference in which the square of the velocities intervenes.
For this purpose, in reactors of the type indicated, an auxiliary air circuit is provided which ends between the turbine and the ejection nozzle, and is provided with a low pressure compressor or one freely open to the atmosphere so as to take the dilution air at flight speed.
It has also been proposed to suck the dilution air by means of a sort of pump operating under the effect of the gases leaving the turbine and interposed between the outlet of the turbine and the ejection nozzle.
The object of the present invention is the application of an additional air intake to reactors in which the mass of gas producing the jet is no longer continuous flow but pulsating flow, reactors which are often called pulro-reactors and which more or less derive from the propulsion devices of the first flying bombs.
This application gives a very particular result because, instead of implementing a simple horn effect or a simple mixture of air
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
and of the gas jet which is thus diluted, with entrainment of the molecules of the dilution air by friction with those of the gas jet, it makes it possible to use the puff of hot gases escaping with each stroke of the gas jet. explosion or combustion chamber, to make it play the role of a kind of piston launched at high speed and pushing the dilution air which has been set up by suction, at the end of the preceding puff. - dente, in a capacity suitably arranged at the rear of the device, before the outlet nozzle of the total mass.
Instead of dilution with mixing and rubbing, over the entire puff of hot gases and additional air there is a real increase in the amount of motion at constant kinetic energy. This makes it possible to improve, in a dramatic and unexpected way, the thrust and the efficiency of the pulsating flow reactors.
The capacity in which the exchange of quantities of movements takes place comprises, at its origin, a divergent, into which the exhaust pipe of the combustion chamber opens and which is determined so as to withstand the increase in thrust in order to avoid disturbing the upstream pulsating flow regime. This divergent is preceded by one or more orifices opening to the atmosphere for the introduction of additional air and which may be, if necessary, provided with a convergent.
In its Belgian patent application No. 391,486, filed on March 9, 1951, for "Improvement of pipes crossed by gases in pulsating flow", the Applicant has already described a form of outlet pipe applicable, in particular, to pipes. Pulso-reactors, which makes it possible to obtain air inlets between successive puffs and an increase in the momentum of the flow ejected by the speeding up of the air thus admitted. This dilution, which takes place through the rear of the ejection pipe, has the drawback of giving rise to speed reversals which reduce the final effect. This drawback, which is sensitive at high speeds of use, is avoided in the device of the invention by the fact that the additional air is admitted in the direction of the gas flow.
The description which will follow with regard to the appended drawing, given by way of non-limiting example, will make it clear how the invention can be implemented, the particularities which emerge both from the drawing and from the text forming, of course, part of said invention. .
Fig. 1 shows, in schematic axial section, an embodiment of an improved pulso-reactor according to the invention.
Figs. 2 and 3 are schematic sections of two variants.
In fig. 1, we see at 1 the explosions or pulsating combustion chamber of a pulso-reactor intended to propel a mobile in the direction of arrow f. Atpospheric air is admitted into this chamber periodically between successive explosions or combustions by any suitable device which does not, in itself, form the object of the invention.
As can be seen, this device may comprise a gate of valves or else a freely open pipe 2 but arranged so as to have greater permeability in the direction of flow which corresponds to the filling of the combustion chamber than in the. reverse direction which would allow the exhaust of the burnt gases from this chamber. Tubings of this kind are already known.
The fuel is permanently admitted into the air introduced into the chamber by means of a device which is well known and not shown. The successive explosions or combustions, once initiated by suitable means, occur automatically at the frequency of the sound pipe formed by chamber 1 and its ejection pipe 3.
The latter, instead of opening directly into the atmosphere, to directly use in reaction the energy of the pulsating flow of gas which it lets escape, as in currently known pulso-reactors, opens into a rear capacity where the setting up and speeding up an additional air flow. This capacity includes a divergent
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
4 which can be either followed by a cylindrical or other ejection pipe 5, or open directly into the atmosphere. The diameter of the inlet opening 6 of the divergent 4 can be larger than the diameter of the tube 3, so as to leave an annular gap, sufficient through which atmospheric air can penetrate .., A convergent 7 ensures the speed setting of the latter to pass it through orifice 6.
Experimentation with such an apparatus has made it possible to observe a very large and unexpected increase in thrust compared to the operation of the ordinary pulso-reactor in which the nozzle 3 would directly form, in the atmosphere, the propellant jet, the device 4, 5, 7 does not exist. The systematic tests carried out have made it possible to highlight the fact that the puff of hot gases at high speed, exiting through tube 3 after each explosion or combustion in chamber 1, strikes the fresh air admitted from the end of the previous shot. in rear capacity 4, 5.
When the puff comes out of the tube 3, the pressure rises in the divergent 4 due to the meeting of the puff and the air of the capacity 4, 5 whose relative speed with respect to said capacity is in the order of the speed of advance of the pulso-reactor in air. The hot gas jet expands and sticks to the wall of the divergent 4 for a certain length, while it pushes the fresh air in front of it, like a piston. There is thus a transformation with an increase in momentum at constant kinetic energy, under the best conditions, between the gas puff coming out of the tube 3 and the air filling the capacity 4, 5.
The output speed of the entire nozzle 5 is reduced compared to the rate of the puff exiting the tube 3, but the momentum and ultimately the thrust can be much greater in due to the increase in the total mass exiting the final tube 5, and this at constant fuel consumption in chamber 1.
Of course, as the final exit speed must exceed the relative speed of the reactor with respect to the air or, at the limit, be equal to this speed, it is advisable to have a relatively high speed at the exit of the tube 3, which will lead, in general, to give this tube a smaller diameter than in ordinary jet reactors where the outlet pipe has roughly the same diameter as the combustion chamber and very substantially forms a pipe with it cylindrical.
At the end of the flow, the flow of gas and air leaves behind a depression which allows the combustion or explosion chamber 1 to be filled through the inlet pipe 2, and to the capacity rear 4, 5, through orifice 6. After the explosion or the following combustion, the phenomena indicated will recur and so on.
It will be understood that the phenomena are very different from those which would occur in a continuous flow reactor such as a turbo-reactor where the gas jet leaving the nozzle 3 would be continuous. In fact, in the steady state of such a device, the dilution air constantly admitted through the orifice 6 would be admitted by a pump effect. The molecules of this air arriving concentrically at the gas jet constantly flowing from the nozzle 3 would be entrained by friction and local impacts of molecules, leading to losses.
The role of the widened or divergent part 4 of the rear capacity is very important, because if this part did not exist, the rear part being, for example cylindrical in the extension of the tube 3, the wave of pressure resulting from the impact of the hot gases against the air would propagate not only backwards but also forwards, disturbing the pressure and flow regime in the tube 3 and the chamber 1. The divergent part 4 prevents this propagation of the upstream pressure wave and it supports the increase in thrust resulting from the transformation of the quantity of movements between hot gases and fresh air.
Several variants can be imagined. Thus, in the embodiment of the pin 2, the convergent 7 is omitted and the diverging part 4 directly connected to the tube 3 is provided with several annular orifices 6a on the inlet of the additional air.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
-In the variant of fig. 3, the additional air is led to the orifice 6a by a fairing 8, of divergent shape, in which the relative wind enters through the annular orifice 9 and which ensures a transformation of the speed of this wind into pressure, so as to increase the density of the additional air introduced at 6a.
It goes without saying that modifications can be made to the improvement which has just been described, in particular by substituting equivalent technical means, without going beyond the scope of the present invention.
