REGULATEUR HYDRAULIQUE.

<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
On a:
EMI3.2
On a donc :
EMI3.3
v = w zozo y ou : V2 = 20w2g o P à

(fig.

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
EMI8.2
où le degré d'irrégularité est exprimé en % (5% = 0,05, 10% = 0,10, 20 % = 0,20, etc).
3) Nous avons vu précédemment (voir fig. 2) que pour un ressort de poussée initiale a et de raideur b, et pour une course du piston régulateur y entre deux positions limites quelconques comprises entre les positions "Tout" et "Rien", on a pour chacune des sections S possibles du passage calibré : la même pression R1 et la même vitesse d'écoulement V1 au niveau du passage calibré lorsque le régulateur est dans la position limite voisine de la position "Tout";
la même pression P2 et la même vitesse d'écoulement V2 au niveau du passage calibré lorsque le régulateur est dans la position limite voisine de la position "Rien";

<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
On a :
EMI10.2
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
On a :
EMI11.1
EMI11.3
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>

Figo 11 is an explanatory diagram.
Fig. 12 is another explanatory diagram.
The pins 13 to 16 schematically represent the various organs of the regulator according to FIG. 8 to 10, in various positions that they can take.
In these figures, the same reference numerals designate the corresponding members of the various regulators shown.
The known regulator shown in FIG. 1 will be described to explain the principle on which the invention is based. It comprises a volumetric pump 1, for example a gear pump, housed in a frame 2, driven by the motor to be adjusted, not shown, which in this example can be any gas or steam engine. , or a hydraulic motor having to work at constant speed under a variable load. Oil, for example, is supplied through conduits 3 and 4 to the inlet of the pump. The pump delivers the oil into a cylindrical chamber 5 provided in the frame 2 and in which a piston 6 slides.
The piston is subjected to the thrust of a spring 7 bearing on one of the ends, 8, of the chamber 5. This piston has a rod 9 controlling an engine supply member, in this case constituted by a valve 10 itself controlling the passage of the fluid in a conduit 11 going to the engine. A calibrated passage 12 is formed in the bottom of the piston, establishing communication between the two faces of this bottom and through which the oil supplied by the pump passes. The oil returns to the pump via a conduit 13 communicating with the conduit 3. The latter is connected with an oil reservoir, not shown.
The regulator is shown in the engine start position, where the engine supply valve 10 is fully open. When the motor is started (by means not shown), it drives the pump 1 in synchronism with it. The latter must reach a certain speed before the pressure on the piston is sufficient to overcome the initial thrust of the spring 7. When the speed permitted by the calibrated passage 12 is reached, the pressure on the piston 6 lowers the latter which, through the rod 9, reduces the section of passage of the valve 10. The section of the calibrated passage 12 is such that a stable equilibrium of the regulator is reached for all the possible positions of the piston 6 between two determined speeds. of the engine, as we will see later.
It is evident that a decrease in the load on the motor tends to produce an increase in its speed, and therefore in the speed of pump 1.
The pressure on the piston increases, and the latter, by lowering, decreases the passage section of the valve 10 controlling the supply of the motor. Conversely, an increase in the load on the motor tends to drop its speed, which has the effect of reducing the pressure on the piston 6. The latter rises under the action of the spring 7, which increases the pressure on the piston 6. opening of the passage section of the valve 10.
Is :
V the flow speed of the circulating fluid through the calibrated passage 12.
P1 the output pressure of positive displacement pump 1, and
Po the pressure at the inlet of this pump.
Let us designate by .12 = P1 - Po the pressure acting on the piston 6 of the regulator, po being, for example, atmospheric pressure.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The speed V is given by Torricelli's formula:
EMI3.1
where w is the flow coefficient of the orifice, and h the pressure expressed in water depth. We have:
EMI3.2
where is the density of the liquid used in the regulator, oil for example.
So we have :
EMI3.3
v = w zozo y where: V2 = 20w2g o P to
This last equation represents a parabola referred to its axes 12 and V. We can therefore plot., As will be described later with regard to fig. 2, the parabola representing the flow velocity V at the passage calibrated 12 as a function of pressure p acting on the regulator piston.
If .2 is the pump flow rate per revolution, and '* (. The volumetric efficiency of this pump, the flow rate per second for a pump rotation speed is:
EMI3.4
If the cross section of the calibrated passage 12 is designated by S, the flow rate Q of the pump is linked to the flow speed V by the formula
Q = SV expressing the law of continuity. We can therefore express the speed of rotation n as a function of V and p:
EMI3.5
On the other hand, the pressure .12 is linked to the characteristics of the spring 7 of the piston by Hook's linear law:
EMI3.6
where F is the active surface of the piston 6, a the initial thrust of the spring 7, b its stiffness, and v its deflection, which is equal to the stroke of the piston.
In figure 2, the pressure 2 on the abscissa therefore also represents a + by / F o We can thus represent on the diagram of figo 2 the speed n of the pump (or that of the motor) as a function of all the device settings:
EMI3.7
This relation shows that the speed of rotation increases linearly with the section 8 of the passage. We can therefore draw the curves representing the speed of rotation n as a function of the pressure p for each section

determined S = 0, S = 1, etc. (fig. 2) o These curves form a family of homologous parabolas having the same axis and the same vertex. Thus, in FIG. 2, for a well-determined active section F of the piston, the pressure 12 on the abscissa also represents the thrust of the return spring.
EMI4.2
For example, two pressures pl and P2 will be chosen between which the regulator operates at all speeds n, from idle to maximum speed limit. To these pressures p1, p2 correspond respectively speeds

flow 7 V2.
The pressure p1 chosen determines the initial thrust a of the spring, according to the relation

P1 = j, C1 'OR. 8. 1? .. 'The maximum deflection] [of the spring, or the stroke of the piston between
EMI4.5
the extreme positions, will be represented by the abscissa P2-pl 'We have the relation:

EMI4.8
The two parameters a eJ21 of the regulator spring are thus well determined Se The term “degree of irregularity” denotes here the speed variation necessary to obtain, at a determined speed, the complete opening and closing of the control member intake of the engine. The diagram of
EMI4.9
fig. 2 makes it possible to choose the two e8taetéristiques a and b of the return spring so that the degree of irregularity conforms to that desired for the engine.
The degree of irregularity decreases as the initial thrust a of the spring increases, while it increases with the stiffness b and the deflection il. spring.
If, for example, for a traction motor, we report graph-
EMI4.10
ment; the Z positions as a function of the motor rotation speed, we obtain the diagram in figo 3 (curves in continuous lines).
EMI4.11
tor working between the selected pressures pi, p2 The degree of irregularity calculated in% of the speed therefore remains the same for all speeds.
If it were a constant speed motor and variable load, the operation of the regulator working between the same pressures p1, p2 would be represented by any of the segments of the parabola corresponding to the determined speed n., For which exists, as we have seen., an equally well determined section S of the calibrated passage
It is easily seen that in order to adjust a motor at constant speed and variable load, it is possible to vary the section S of the passage calibrated to have a degree of irregularity determined for example by means of a parabolic needle integral with the piston and capable of move in a circular bore., the profile to be given to this needle can be calculated by the above relations.
The greater the initial thrust of the spring,
EMI4.12
the closer the paraboloid is to a cone (figo 2) 0
If, instead of a paraboloid or a cone, said needle is cylindrical, the section S of the passage remains constant over the entire stroke of the piston, and the degree of irregularity can be read in the diagram fig. In this case, it is obvious that the needle can be replaced by a simple bore of section S in the plunger, for example.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Thus, when it comes to regulating a motor at constant speed and variable load., It suffices to construct the regulator according to the parabola segment (figo 2) corresponding to the speed requested between two limit speeds n determining the degree of irregularity required. To these two speeds correspond, as we have seen, two well-determined pressures P1, P2, which themselves define exactly the characteristics a and b of the regulator spring.
In the case of a governor for a traction motor, the section S of the calibrated passage 12 must vary with the speed of the motor, according to the laws established above. It can be seen from figs 2 and 3 that when the section S of the calibrated passage is doubled, the engine speed is also doubled, and that when the engine speed is doubled, the degree of irregularity in number of revolutions is. also doubled and therefore remains the same as a% of rotational speed.
If the desired degree of irregularity, calculated in% of the speed, is the same for all the speeds, from idle to the maximum limit speed, it is obvious that it will suffice to vary, by any means whatever, the speed. section S of the calibrated passage 12 (fig. 1) made in the piston 6, to obtain the adjustment of a traction motor.
Fig. 4 shows an embodiment of such a regulator.
It comprises, like the regulator according to fig. 1, a gear pump 1 driven by the motor to be adjusted, a frame 2, conduits 3 and 4 bringing the oil to the inlet of pump 1, a cylindrical chamber 5 in the frame 2, a piston 6 and its spring 7, the latter resting on the wall closing the chamber 5 at its upper part, a rod 9 integral with the piston 6 and controlling a valve 10, which itself controls the passage of the fluid supplying the motor through the conduit 11. In the bottom of the piston 6 is formed a calibrated axial hole 12 establishing communication between the two faces of this bottom and through which passes the oil supplied by the pump. The oil returns to the pump through line 13 communicating with line 3. The latter is connected to an oil reservoir, not shown.
The regulator further comprises a needle 14 integral with the accelerator (not shown) of the engine. The needle 14 is capable of sliding into one of the bottoms, 8, of the chamber 5 and terminates in a conical free end on which is mounted an expandable sleeve 15. The latter consists of a split ring having an exterior surface of generally cylindrical shape and a conical interior surface having the same taper as the needle 14. The sleeve is retained at its lower part by a flange 16 cooperating with a part 17 integral with the needle. frame, so that the sleeve cannot move in the axial direction. The sleeve 15 cooperates with the axial hole 12 drilled in the bottom of the piston 6.
Depending on the position given to the needle 14, the sleeve 15 is more or less apart. We thus have the means to vary the section S of the annular calibrated passage formed by the space between the hole 12 and the sleeve 15, this section being able to take all the possible values between a minimum section corresponding to the stop or to the ra - engine idle, and a maximum section corresponding to the maximum speed limit.
In the above device, \ 1 the section S of the calibrated passage., Once determined by the position of the needle 14, remains constant whatever the position of the piston 6 relative to the sleeve 15, since the outer surface of this the latter is generally cylindrical in shape. If the engine to be adjusted requires different degrees of irregularity depending on the speeds, the free end of the needle 14 will be given the shape shown in FIGS. 5 to 7.
The needle 14 in this case comprises a cylindrical part 18 sliding in the bottom 8 of the chamber 5, a first conical portion 19, a second conical portion 20, the taper of which is less accentuated than that of the first portion 19. , then a last portion 21, cylindrical. When the needle 14 is in the position shown in FIG. 5, the sleeve 15 has a conical outer surface, of diameter decreasing from bottom to top.
Depending on the variation of the resistive torque, for a speed determined by the section of the calibrated passage, the piston 6 moves relative to the sleeve 15. For a reduction in the resistive torque, the speed increases, the piston 6 moves upwards, the section S of the calibrated passage increases; and the degree of irregularity increases.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Fig. 6 corresponds to the case of FIG. 4, that is to say that in this case, the sec- tioh S of the calibrated passage is invariable for all the positions of the piston 6, and the degree of irregularity is naturally given by the spring 7. If finally the needle is in the position shown in FIG. 7, the sleeve 15 has a conical outer surface of increasing diameter from bottom to top. When the piston 6 moves upwards, the section S of the calibrated passage decreases and the degree of irregularity decreases.
The balance of the regulator will be immaterial when, for a determined conicity of the sleeve 15 according to FIG. 7, the degree of irregularity will be equal to 0. The segments of the parabola of the speeds n (figo 2) will then be replaced by segments of straight lines parallel to the pressure axis, while in fig. 3, the parabolic segments will be replaced by line segments parallel to the y axis.
If the taper of the sleeve 15 according to fig. 7 is even higher, the degree of irregularity is reversed (negative) and the adjustment is still carried out from all to nothing, the start-up being carried out with the valve 10 in the maximum open position of the pipe 11. In the case of a negative degree of irregularity, all possible positions of the regulator are also stable.
The regulator shown in fig. 8 is also intended for adjusting a traction motor, and it allows the degree of irregularity of the apparatus to be changed without changing the characteristics. and b spring. It comprises a gear pump 1 driven by the motor to be adjusted, a frame 2, conduits 3 and 4 bringing oil to the inlet of pump 1, a cylindrical chamber 5 in the frame 2, a piston 6 sliding in this chamber and subjected to the action of a spring 7 bearing on the wall closing the chamber 5 (at its upper part in the drawing), a rod 9 integral with the piston 6 and controlling a valve 10, which controls it - even the passage of the fluid supplying the motor through line 11.
In the bottom of the piston is formed a calibrated hole 12, at a certain distance from the piston pin, establishing communication between the two faces of this bottom and through which passes the oil supplied by the pump. The oil returns to the pump via a conduit 13 communicating with the conduit 3. The latter is connected with an oil reservoir, not shown.
The piston 6 has a central shoulder 22 on which is mounted a flap 23 capable of rotating about a pivot 24 axially passing through the bottom of the piston 6. A spring 25, mounted on the pivot 24, presses the flap 23 against the shoulder. 22 of the piston. The shutter 23 is pierced with a hole 26 of the same diameter as the hole 12, the two holes being in exact coincidence in one of the positions that the shutter 23 can take. The latter has an extension 27 in the form of a fork which can slide, when the piston 6 moves in the chamber 5, in a slot 28 (fig. 10) of a block 29 secured to a pin 30 capable of rotating in a part 8 constituting the lower bottom of the chamber 5. At the lower end of the axis 30 is mounted a control lever 31.
By rotating the lever in its plane, the shutter 23 is rotated relative to the bottom of the piston 6, via the axis 30, the block 29 and the extension 27 of the shutter cooperating with the edges of the slot 28 .
It is thus possible to modify the section of the calibrated passage formed by the holes 12 and 260
A plug 32 is fixed in a recess provided in the side wall of the chamber 5, a gasket 33 ensuring the seal. The stopper 32 has a cylindrical cavity in which is housed a cylindrical part 34, integral with a shaft 35, capable of rotating in the stopper 32. The part 34 has a rectilinear groove 36 arranged according to one of its diameters, and in which can move without appreciable play a pin 37 fixed in the side wall of the piston 6.
At the end of the shaft 35, coaxial with the part 34, is fixed a lever 38 having a slot 39, along which can slide a pin 40 which can be immobilized at will in a determined position, by clamping. on the lever 38, by means of a nut 41. The head of the pin 40 cooperates with a part 42 mounted on the lever 31, this head being housed, without appreciable play, in a slot 43 of the part 42.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
When the lever 31 is moved to vary the section of the calibrated passage 12, 26, as seen above, at the same time a rotation of the shaft 35 is produced, and the inclination of the groove is thus modified. 36 with respect to a generator of the piston 6. When the piston moves in the chamber 5 to take a new position of equilibrium. following a variation of the resistant torque for a speed determined by the lever 31, the pin 37 of the piston 6, which is obliged to follow the groove 36, causes the piston to turn around its own axis relative to the shutter 23, the direction of this rotation depending on the direction of inclination of the groove 36 (see FIG. 9).
If this inclination is such that it causes, for a determined position of the handle 31, an increase in the section of the calibrated orifice 12, 26, during the stroke of the piston from all to nothing for the valve 10, the degree d The irregularity will be increased and vice versa.
The variation in the degree of irregularity can be adjusted at will by moving the pin 40 in the slot 39 of the lever 38. o It can be seen in fig. 8 that a rotation of a given angle of the lever 31 produces a rotation of the axis 35, and consequently of the groove 36, the closer the pin 40 is fixed to the shaft 350
When the lever 31 is suddenly placed in the stop position, which reduces the cross-section of the calibrated passage 12, 26 to zero, the piston 6 is pushed up very quickly to the closed position of the valve. 10, and the pressure exerted against the piston by the oil supplied by pump 1 could increase dangerously.
To avoid overpressure, there is provided, in the frame 2, a discharge duct 44 arranged so as to interconnect the outlet and the inlet of the pump 1 when the piston 6 fully closes the valve 10.
The diagram in fig. 3 gives the curves (in phantom lines) representing the arrow:;:, of the spring 7 (that is to say the stroke of the piston 6) as a function of the speed of rotation of the engine for the regulator in degree of variable irregularity described with reference to FIGS. 8, 9 and 10:
We will examine the operation of this regulator in more detail (see figs 11 to 16).
When it comes to adjusting a traction motor, the degree of irregularity demanded by the motor at its different speeds depends not only on the inertia of the rotating mass, \! but also flow characteristics of the inlet valve or the feed pump in the case of a combustion engine. The stability of the governor at engine idle speed requires a travel speed of the governor piston well below that suitable for the limit speed. In other words, it is necessary that the speed of movement of the regulating piston is always substantially proportional to the speed of change of engine speed during a variation of the resistive torque.
Indeed, if the reaction speed of the regulator is greater than that of the engine, the regulating piston exceeds the equilibrium position corresponding to the new resistive torque, and the piston oscillates around this equilibrium position following a sustained pendular movement .
Until now, this pendulum movement has been fought by servo mechanisms and dash-pots placed between the regulator and the inlet valve. These means are expensive and cumbersome, and if they make it possible to solve the regulation of motors at constant speed and variable load, they become very complicated when it comes to adjusting a traction motor.
The solution proposed here is independent of any servo-control or similar mechanism, given that it makes it possible, for example, to vary the degree of irregularity as a function of the engine speed considered, such that at idle speed of a traction motor, the entire stroke of the regulating piston takes place over a large difference in speed, while at the maximum speed limit, all-nothing is cut off for a small difference in speed.
We have seen that the position of the lever 31 (actuated by the accelerator) determines a speed regime for a section S of the calibrated passage, and that the degree of irregularity given by the characteristics a and b of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
return spring 7 is constant at all speeds when this section S does not vary during the piston adjustment stroke
Consequently, by varying the passage section S by a greater or lesser rotation of the piston during its adjustment stroke, according to the speed determined by this section, that is to say according to the position of the accelerator the stability of the regulator will be achieved for all speeds,
regardless of the inertia of the rotating masses of the engine and the flow characteristics of the inlet valve or of the fuel pump.
Generally :
1) The stability of the governor at engine idle speed requires a travel speed of the governor piston much lower than that suitable for the limit speed. The degree of irregularity must therefore decrease from idle to the limit speed of a traction motor.
2) For any section S of the calibrated passage, that is to say for a speed of rotation determined by the position of the accelerator, the degree of irregularity 6 is defined by the expression
EMI8.1
where n1 is the speed of rotation of the pump in the "Tout" position of the regulating piston and n2 the speed of rotation of the pump in the "Nothing" position of the regulating piston. This expression makes it possible to obtain n2 as a function of or
EMI8.2
where the degree of irregularity is expressed in% (5% = 0.05, 10% = 0.10, 20% = 0.20, etc).
3) We have seen previously (see fig. 2) that for an initial thrust spring a and of stiffness b, and for a stroke of the regulating piston y between any two limit positions between the "All" and "Nothing" positions, there is for each of the possible sections S of the calibrated passage: the same pressure R1 and the same flow speed V1 at the level of the calibrated passage when the regulator is in the limit position close to the "All" position;
the same pressure P2 and the same flow speed V2 at the level of the calibrated passage when the regulator is in the limit position close to the "Nothing" position;
A difference in speed # n = n2 - n1 of the pump between the two limit positions considered.? which corresponds to a constant degree of irregularity, whatever the section S of the calibrated passage, that is to say whatever the engine speed.
We will consider, by way of example, (fig. 11 to 16) how the characteristics of the governor are determined in the case of a 4-stroke traction engine, the idling speed of which must be 400 t / min. and the limit or maximum speed of 2400 rpm. Since the gear ratio between the motor and the regulator pump is 2: 1, (4-stroke motor) the pump will have a rotational speed n of 200 rpm. at idle speed and a maximum of 1200 rpm.
We also set as a condition that the degree of irregularity is 50% at idle and 5% at maximum speed, t varying linearly with n between these two limits. Finally, ±. remains constant and equal to 50% when the engine is stopped, that is to say when n varies by 200 rpm. to O.
First, a diagram (fig. 11) corresponding to the diagram of fig. 2 and giving n as a function of 12 for different sections S of the calibrated passage and for a degree of irregularity = constant = 5%. These curves, represented in mixed lines, are therefore segments of parabolas. They are

plotted between an abscissa pi = p corresponding to the "Tout" position of the regulator (y = 0), and an abscissa p2 = a; by corresponding to the position !! Nothing (y = y) The difference p2 - pl represents therefore alssi the total stroke y of the intake member 10.
In practice,. the adjustment is not made between the "Tout" and BoRienet positions, but between a pressure pm3 greater than pl and corresponding to the "maximum" position of the member 10 (that is to say ensuring the 'admission through the conduit II), and a pressure pr, less than P2 and corr-espon-

Different positions of the intake member 10 are noted on the diagram of FIG. 11: Point A corresponds to the idle idle position (y = yr 'p = Pr' n = 200 rpm.) Point B corresponds to the position for the full speed limit

load (y = Yme p = pmg n = 1200 rpm); point C corresponds to the "over-speed" position (y = y, p = p, N = 1260 rpm), this over-speed being determined by the form:
EMI9.5
point C defines the position of member 10 and the speed of the empty motor when the accelerator is at maximum. This position is generally very close to that of idling.
We have confused it with slow motion so as not to complicate the diagram. Points B and C therefore correspond to the degree of irregularity E requested in breaking at the limit speed ,. '
EMI9.6
The curve representing n as a function of for the real case considered merges with the mixed line curve B-C, since these two curves correspond to the same degree of i regularity = 0, ose
The curves represented in solid lines on the diagram (FIG. 11) are determined, from the speed n envisaged for the pressure Pm 'by the degree of irregularity corresponding to this speed. The diagram of
EMI9.7
Fig. 12 gives ± as a function of n.
Since it is assumed that ± varies linearly with%, the curve is a straight line passing through the point of ordinate 50% and abscissa 200 and through the point of ordinate 5% and abscissa 1200. ' This diagram allows you to read the value of # for any value of n. The different va-

In particular, for n = 200 (point D of the diagram figo 11), we
EMI9.9
has a degree of a .: regularity ¯ 50%. The real curve in solid line passing through D intersects the line of abscifise pr at a point E whose ordinate n2 is
EMI9.10
The curves in solid lines are drawn in accordance with the law of variation of S as a function of the stroke of the piston, which follows from the constructiono
To obtain a regulator meeting the above conditions, proceed as follows:
1) One chooses according to fig. 11 a return spring 7 whose characteristics, and b give a constant degree of irregularity equal to that required for the limit speed, ie = 5% (this to simplify the calculations).
The groove 36 determining the degree of irregularity (figo 8) is then vertical when the lever 31 of the accelerator is in the limited speed position.
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
2) The spring being thus determined., We refer to the diagram of FIG. 0 there are the "All" and "Nothing" positions of the regulator piston and the characteristic points A, B and C of the desired adjustment.
Full load cut-off has the required degree of irregularity = 5%. The section S of the calibrated passage therefore remains unchanged. The over-speed at point C is, as we have seen, equal to 1260 rpm.
3) The degree of irregularity requested at idle = 50%, determines, as noted above, point E of the diagram, corresponding to a speed of 333 t / min., Instead of 210 t / mino that the governor spring would give when over-speeding at idle (200 rpm, # = 5%), if the piston did not turn around its axis.
4) We read in the diagram fig; 11 the SD and SE sections of the calibrated passage corresponding to points D and E For greater precision, these sections can be calculated using the formulas:
EMI10.1
the Q and the V being respectively the flow rates and the speeds at the level of the passage calibrated for the corresponding rotational speeds n.
The SD value represents the section of the calibrated passage which gives the engine a speed of 400 timing (pump 200 rpm), for the maximum torque at this speed (maximum intake ym).
For the degree of irregularity # = 50% to be achieved at this speed, it is necessary that, without modifying the position of the accelerator, the regulating piston must occupy the position yr for the speed n = 333 r / min. . of the pump when the motor is completely unloaded. To obtain this result, the cross section of the calibrated passage must increase from the value SD as the motor is unloaded, up to the value SE reached when the motor is idling. As we have explained, this increase in section is achieved by rotating the piston with respect to the shutter 23 (fig. 8) which maintains an invariable angular position during the operation.
It is now a question of determining the angle of rotation of the piston or the pitch of its helical movement or, better still, the corresponding angle e of the groove 36.
Fig. 13 schematically represents the various organs of the regulator according to fig. 8 to 10, in the position they occupy for point D of the diagram of fig 11 (full load, 200 rpm, # = 50%). The respective position of hole 12 in the bottom of piston 6 and hole 26 of flap 23 is shown on a large scale to the left of the figure. The centers of these holes are indicated respectively by OD and 0, and their common distance to the axis of the piston by Ro The two holes have the same diameter r. The calibrated passage to the SD section (represented by a hatched area)
SD / 2 represents the area of a segment of a circle of radius r for an arrow f2. The surface SD being known (according to the diagram of fig. 11), a table of circumferences makes it possible to find f.
The distance 1 = 2r - 2f between the centers OD and 0 is the chord of the circle of radius R corresponding to the angle [alpha] D between the respective positions of the centers OD and 0 relative to the axis of the piston 6. We have:
EMI10.2
which allows to obtain [alpha] D.
The same calculations for the SE section (freeze 14, corresponding to point E, speed 333 rpm, no load), make it possible to obtain 1-'angle [alpha] E.
Consequently, the piston 6 rotates around its axis at an angle # = [alpha] D - [alpha] E while passing from position D (full load at 200 rpm) to
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
position E (idling at 333 rpm). the section of the calibrated passage increasing from SD to SE.
This angle # thus calculated defines a chord '!! on the circle of radius (fig.13) of the point of contact between Diton 37 and groove 36. We have:
EMI11.1
The angle e between the axis of the groove 36 and the axis of the piston 6 for the degree of irregularity ± = 50% is then given by the expression
EMI11.2
where u = Yr - ym is the piston stroke between point D (full load, 200 rpm) and point E (no-load operation, 333 rpm).
In cut-off, at the limit speed of 1200 rpm, the groove 36 is vertical (e = o), and the section of the calibrated orifice does not change from point B to point C. We therefore have SB = SC (see figo 15 corresponding to point B, and figo 16 corresponding to point C) The degree of irregularity requested (# = 5%) is given by the return spring 7.
To gradually increase the degree of irregularity by 5% for 1200 rpm. at 50% for 200 rpm, the two limit positions of shutter 23, indicated by M (maximum and R (idling) in fig. 13 to 16, are adjusted by means of adjustable stops (not shown) limiting the movement of the throttle control lever 31 (freeze, 8, 13 and 15), so that the positions M and R of this lever are symmetrical with respect to the axis of the groove 36 when the latter is vertical.
These two positions form an angle # between them. The active length of the lever 38 (fig. 8, 13 and 15) is determined by adjusting the position of the pin 40, so that at this angle # of the handle 31 corresponds a sngle e of the lever 38 and, by therefore, of the irregularity groove 360
The values of the angle e are given by the diagram in figo 12.
Suppose that in the example chosen the calculation gives for a value of 30 for the degree of irregularity. 6 = 50%; at idling speed n = 200 rpm. (point D) We have seen that 2 varies between this value 0 (vertical groove 36) for the limit speed of 1200 rpm. (# = 5% (point B)) The curve giving e as a function of n is therefore a straight line passing through the two points thus determined. We have noted on the abscissa the sections S corresponding to the different speeds n (see diagram fig. 11)
In the case of the adjustment of motors at constant speed and variable load, practice has shown that it is preferable for these motors to provide for the adjustment of the passage section S to make it possible to obtain exactly the desired speed n. .
Likewise, to be free from any problem of servo-control between the regulator and the servo-controls and from the use of dash-pots in order to stabilize the setting, the degree of irregularity should be adjusted at the request of the driver. engine and its speed without even changing the characteristics a and b of the return spring of the piston 6. For this, it suffices to give the piston 6 a sluggish movement by means of the groove 36, the adjustable inclination of which allows to vary the degree of irregularity on demand.
It is to highlight that
1) The section S of the calibrated passage corresponding to the desired speed n is adjusted by the shutter 23.
2) We will then adjust the inclination of the groove-36 to find exactly the two speeds n1 (All) and n2 (Nothing) which correspond to the degree of irregularity sought.
3) The degree of irregularity is defined, as we have seen, by
EMI11.3
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
4) When n2 is smaller than n, the degree of irregularity is negative, in the case of asynchronous alternators for example, the speed under load is then greater than that of idling.
5) Any return spring 7 always gives a positive degree of irregularity when the section S remains constant throughout the stroke of the piston.
This degree of irregularity - decreases as the initial thrust a of the spring increases - - decreases when the stiffness b of the spring is smaller.
6) By turning the member 34 carrying the groove 36 in the direction of the decrease in the degree of irregularity, when n2 - ni = 0, the balance of the regulator is indifferent and no adjustment of the motor can be carried out.
By turning this organ more, n2 then becomes smaller than ni which means that S2 "Nothing" is smaller than Si "All". The degree of irregularity is then negative and all the positions of the regulator are again stable.
7) The degree of irregularity must be either positive or negative, but cannot be positive in one part of the stroke adjustment of piston 6 and negative in the other.
It will be noted that, in the examples described, the adjustment takes place, contrary to custom, from "All" to "Nothing". When the engine is stopped, the power is maximum. This may seem paradoxical at first glance but corresponds exactly to the requirements of the engine, which, when starting, requires massive admission. As soon as the engine is started, the action of the regulator intervenes by reducing the flow given by the "All" position, to adjust its speed according to the position of the accelerator. In the case of diesel engines, since the regulator pump is used as a feed pump for the injection pump, no accident can occur. If there was a governor failure, the engine would stop.
The invention is not limited to the specific examples described, on the contrary it embraces all variants.
