 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  HYDRAULIC SPEED REGULATORS.

   The invention relates to hydraulic regulators for providing automatic regulation of reactors, gas turbines, or other prime movers.

   The object of the invention consists in establishing a regulator of a simple form called upon to effect, during a modification of the speed, a temporary over-adjustment, before the establishment of the permanent state, thus ensuring stability of operation.

   The invention comprises a hollow rotor intended to contain mercury or another liquid and divided by a partition into two compartments which communicate with each other at their peripheries, and one of which is provided internally with liquid delivery blades, the 'other compartment being limited on one side by a movable membrane (or piston) intended to perform the desired adjustment action.

   The accompanying drawing schematically shows a regulator established according to the present invention for the adjustment of a variable flow fuel pump.

   As shown in these drawings, the regulator comprises, in a hollow body a, a hollow rotor b of cylindrical shape, this rotor being controlled (directly or indirectly) by the driving machine, by means of a shaft c. The interior of the rotor is divided into two compartments by a partition 51 arranged at right angles to the axis of rotation, the two compartments being located so as to communicate with each other at their periphery by means of a or several orifices, 2 provided in the periphery of the partition or around this periphery, or located in any other suitable manner.

   In one of the compartments is provided a system of blades f, radial or other, the arrangement being such that any modification of the rotational speed of the rotor is immediately accompanied by a modification

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 analogue of the speed of rotation of the liquid contained in this compartment, the latter liquid preferably being mercury.

   The other compartment is limited on one side by a flexible and elastic membrane g (or a piston), this membrane (or piston) being called upon to impart a displacement to a member forming part of the feeding adjustment system and intended to be operated by the regulator.

   In the example shown, a valve box 1 is seen integrally with the body a or mounted thereon, this box being provided with connections for the pipes j, k. Line 1 starts from a valve seat m provided in said box. Inside the latter is housed a valve control lever n ballasted with a spring, 2 and carrying a shutter member J2 intended to act jointly with said seat. This lever can be actuated by a pusher ± passing through one side of the body a, this pusher being in contact with the membrane, (or piston) g. The spring o is also used to ballast this chamber (or piston).

   In the example shown, the supply adjustment system consists of a hydraulically controlled servo-mechanism, comprising a cylinder 3: and a piston slidably mounted in this cylinder and weighted with a spring t, this piston being intended to vary the flow rate of a variable flow pump u by varying the degree of obliquity of an oscillating plate v, as disclosed in UK Patent No. 577,016. According to one variant, the servo-mechanism may be called upon to actuate a butterfly valve, a bypass valve or any other member for regulating the supply. The motor liquid can be sent under pressure to one end of the cylinder r from the pump, or any other suitable source, through a channel w, the two ends of the cylinder communicating with each other through a constricted orifice x.

   The other end of the cylinder is connected by line .1 to the valve seat m. The arrangement is such that, when the shutter member p is applied to its seat, the piston s is moved by its spring 1 to the position corresponding to maximum supply, while the distance between the shutter member is The seat under the action of the regulator causes this piston to move under the pressure of the motor liquid, against the antagonism of said spring, towards the minimum supply position. The motor liquid which enters the valve box through line 1 is returned to the pump, or to another part of the system, through line k.

   The regulator works as follows: When the spring rotates at a uniform speed, the peripheral pressure (due to centrifugal force) of the liquid contained in the two compartments is equal in them, while the effective pressure acting on the diaphragm (or piston) has a lower value which corresponds to the average pressure acting on its inner surface. In addition, the masses of liquid contained in the two compartments rotate at the same speed.

  When the speed of the governor increases, the speed of the liquid in the paddle compartment changes instantly by the same amount under the effect of the paddles being pushed back. However., And due to inertia the speed of the liquid in the other compartment tends to remain unchanged.

  Consequently, the latter liquid will be temporarily subjected to a higher peripheral centrifugal pressure in the paddle compartment, which pressure will be imparted to the whole of the liquid contained in the other compartment, and thence to the whole of the surface of the diaphragm (or piston), which will have the effect of imparting to the lever n an exaggerated temporary movement in the direction of the opening of the valve, thus determining a corresponding exaggerated reduction of the supply . However, following the gradual acceleration of the speed of rotation of the liquid in said other compartment, the peripheral centrifugal pressure of this liquid will eventually balance that of the liquid contained in the paddle compartment.

   When a state of stability is reached, the effective pressure acting on the membrane (or piston) in said other compartment, will be reduced to a slightly reduced effective value (although higher than the previous effective pressure), which will have the effect of d 'bring the gold-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 shutter valve p, fitted on lever n, to the new position required.

   Likewise, when the governor speed decreases, while it is a question of obtaining a higher fuel flow, the peripheral centrifugal pressure decreases in the paddle compartment, thus determining an exaggerated temporary drop in pressure in the another compartment, resulting in a corresponding exaggerated rise in fuel flow.

  However, when the velocity of the liquid in the other compartment becomes equal to that of the liquid in the paddle compartment, the effective pressure in said other compartment rises, determining a supply with the appropriate new rate.

   When the regulator is operating and the diaphragm, g moves outward, a vacuum tends to be created in the liquid in the region of the axis of the regulator. To overcome this tendency, there is provided an elastic and compressible cap z containing a similar liquid and arranged in an axial bore of the shaft, this cap opening towards the interior of the rotor b. In addition, the bore of this shaft is in communication, via orifices 3 and a pipe 4, with the pipe k in which sufficient pressure is exerted to compress the capsule and to force the liquid contained therein to flow to the rotor, so that the latter is kept in a fully filled state.

   Thanks to the provision which provides for a temporary over-adjustment of the governor when changing the speed? a stable regulator (that is to say a regulator free from a tendency towards hesitant operation) is produced in a very simple manner.

   Although the governor according to the example described above is suitable for controlling the supply of fuel to an engine, it is not limited to this use and can be used for other similar applications.
