  PRESSE A PAILLE A BALLES, A HACHE-PAILIE PREVU.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  BALE STRAW PRESS, HAS CHOPPED. UPSTREAM OF THE CORRIDOR
THE PRESS.-
There is no difficulty in placing a straw chopper upstream of the passage of a so-called "long" press given that the difference between the free sections of the thresher and of the press passage is not very important, so that the interposition of a straw chopper of suitable width., adapted to the length of the stems of the straw does not cause an accumulation of chaff going from the chopper to the press corridor.
This is not the case with balers. Here, the free width of the baler passage is generally less than one third of the free width of the thresher and, like the straw chopper,

   if it is called upon to act on the straw over the entire length of the latter must have a width approximately corresponding to the length of the rod, the press feed hopper cannot be reduced to the width of the corridor of it that below the chopper. However, the level difference between the press corridor and the straw chopper cannot be chosen at will, for reasons of no interest here.

   Consequently, the walls of the feed hopper, insofar as they are located below the chopper, must inevitably have such a strong inclination to the vertical, that the chaff can adhere to these walls in the corners. dead bodies which are not swept away by the straw introducer (ram, which pushes the straw back into the press corridor and which most often performs an oscillating movement following an arc of a circle, this straw being able to s' accumulate and ultimately pile up to such an extent that there is a risk that it will be pulled up again by the chopper. Such an arrangement is therefore practically unusable. The invention aims to make it usable in the field. convenient.

   o
The principle of the invention is characterized in that the small straw which is deposited in the part of the hopper, not swept by the ram, and located below the straw chopper, is shaken by the action direct or indirect

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 direct from any moving member. This straw is thus set in motion and finally reaches the press corridor. This shaking can be ensured by shocks applied to the walls in question of the hopper, by hammering or rubbing these walls, or even, and automatically, by members acting on the straw itself.

   Other details of the invention will be explained below with the aid of the schematic drawing showing an exemplary embodiment.
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the baler.

   Figure 2 is a cross section taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.

   As is known, a baling press consists of a press corridor 1, a piston 2 mounted in reciprocating motion by a crank in this corridor, a straw feed hopper 3 disposed above this corridor, and a member straw introduction (pusher or ram) 4 which pushes the straw down into this hopper and introduces it into the passage of the press and which preferably moves in an arc of a circle.

   According to the invention, there is placed in the hopper 3 a straw chopper (cutter drum or shredder) 5 so that the straw coming from the threshing machine for example and brought by the endless conveyor 6 or in another way, is entrained in the chopper 5 and is pushed back below it, and in the form of chaff, in the passage of the press, by the straw introduction member 4.

   The straw hopper 3 has, as shown in Figure 2, an initial width (b) which corresponds approximately to the length of a rod, and therefore to the free width of the thresher, not shown.

   It is true that the hopper 3 is slightly narrowed at the location of the straw chopper 5, where it has a width b1, however, the chopper 5 still has a sufficient width to work the straw over the entire length of it. the rod.

   It is only below the chopper 5 that the width of the hopper is reduced to that, b2, of corridor 1, the difference in height available being so small that the walls of the hopper present at this point a relatively gentle slope.

   Consequently, the chaff runs the risk of settling and accumulating on the walls of the hopper, in the blind spots of the latter not swept by the straw introduction member 4, in particular under the ax. straw itself, and pile up in it in such a way that it is pulled up again by the straw chopper.

   '
According to the invention, and in order to avoid these inconveniences, the chaff which accumulates in the blind corners of the hopper, on the walls thereof, below the straw chopper, is subjected to a shaking. by means of a movable member, namely, either indirectly by hammering, jolting or movements imparted to the walls of the hopper, or directly by friction on these walls or by a direct action of the special movable member, exerted on the small straw
In the exemplary embodiment shown, the organ.

   special mobile has the form of a rake 7 whose teeth, for example, arranged inside the hopper 3 and below the chopper 5, are located in the rest position near the neighboring wall 8 of the hopper and are mounted on a pivoting shaft 9 protected against contact with the straw either by the fact that it is arranged outside the hopper 3, or by providing it with a special screen, when it is located inside this hopper.

   The rake is mounted oscillating with the aid of this shaft 9, so as to be able to be moved between the position in solid lines and the position in dotted lines using drive fingers 10 mounted on a rotary shaft 11 of the press, arranged in any judicious way, on one or both sides of the press frame, which fingers act on an oscillating arm 12 of the rake 7 in the direction of a

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 positive displacement of the rake from the solid line position to the dotted position, with, preferably, simultaneous action of the rake 7 in the direction of movement of the chaff towards the path of the ram 4.

   The feed rake 7 returns under the pressure of the chaff which arrives from above from the chopper 5. This movement can however be made positive if one has the drive fingers on the other side of the press. 10 'which in the intervals of the action of the fingers 10, act on the rake 7 with the interposition of an intermediate pinion Z, that is to say, in the opposite direction of rotation (see right side of figure 2).

   Instead of providing the rake 7on can mount the wall 8 on hinges and impart to them movements or jerks using rotary drive fingers or else, this wall can be rubbed by a movable member.

   The driving impulse applied to the special movable member can also be derived from the reciprocating press piston 2, from the vertically oscillating ram 4 or from any other movable member of the press.
