 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  POLISHING PROCESS.

   The present invention relates to a process for polishing fluffy fabrics such as velvets and carpets.

   It aims to give a better appearance to fluffy fabrics.

   In particular, - 'It is known to manufacture fluffy fabrics tending to imitate fur, in particular fabrics called "Teddy-bear". But the products of the kind, obtained at present, constitute only a very imperfect imitation of the fur; especially lack of luster and rigidity of the hair which remains curly. The invention overcomes this disadvantage by modifying the appearance of these fabrics to give them that of the fur called "golden sheep".

   To this end, in the method according to the invention, the fabric is treated as follows: impregnation "off 'a piece of the fabric to be polished, which is passed slowly through a solution of urea, aqueous and warm, of which the concentration is between forty and eighty grams per liter, the said piece then being passed between rollers to express about four-fifths of the liquid retained by the fabric; drying of the latter; spraying under pressure the lint of the fabric by a 33% formalin solution with immediately consecutive brushing; passage of the fabric between squeezing rollers, followed by passage through a polishing machine having at least one straightening cylinder.

   In an advantageous embodiment of the object of the invention, the temperature of the aforementioned aqueous solution is of the order of 30 ° C.

   In a particularly advantageous embodiment, the above formalin solution is added with 1 to 5% by volume of an organic acid. Preferably, this organic acid is acetic acid or formic acid.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   Other details and features of the invention will emerge from the description of the polishing process :, given below by way of non-limiting example and with reference to the accompanying drawings.

   The figures are diagrams illustrating the process.

   FIG. 1 relates to a first series of operations.

   Figure 2 relates to subsequent operations.

   In the various figures, the same reference notations designate elements which are identical or perform identical functions.

   A piece 1 of fabric to be polished is impregnated "off" with a solution of urea, aqueous and warm, that is to say that the piece 1 wound on a drum 2, for example, is unwound and the fabric tape, driven and guided by rotating rollers 3, is passed into a tank 4 containing the urea solution. The concentration of this solution is between forty and eighty grams of urea per liter of water. The passage of the tissue in the solution takes place slowly and lasts approximately one minute and thirty seconds.

   Advantageously, the temperature of the aforementioned solution is of the order of 30 C.

   Leaving the solution, the ribbon then passes between rollers 5 in order to express substantially four-fifths of the liquid retained by the fabric 1. The rollers 5 are preferably arranged at the outlet of the tank 4 to facilitate the recovery of the expressed solution. . The fabric 1 is then dried in a dryer 6, at the outlet of which it can be wound up on a drum 13 to be stored while waiting for the subsequent operations to be carried out.

   The next phase of the process consists of spraying the fluff of the fabric under pressure with a 33% formalin solution with immediately consecutive brushing. These operations are carried out, for example, on a table 7 where the fabric 1 passes, after possible unwinding, under a perforated pipe 8 which sprinkles the plush with it, which is immediately subjected to the action of a rotating brush 9. The hair is thus moistened with the formalin solution.

  After brushing, the fabric 1 passes between squeezing rollers 10 which remove any excess of the formalin solution. Each hair is then filled with urea which is in the presence of formalin.

   In a particularly advantageous embodiment of the polishing process, the formalin solution used is added with 1 to 5% by volume of an organic acid. This organic acid is in particular acetic acid or 80% formic acid. The formalin and urea present on the fluff of fabric 1 are, in this case, in an acidic medium.

   To complete the treatment, the fabric 1 passes through a polishing machine 11 having at least one straightening cylinder 12. The cylinder 12 is heated and maintained at a temperature between 120 and 140 C. On leaving the polishing machine 11, the fabric 1 enters a ventilating apparatus 14 where it is cooled and deodorized in order, on leaving this apparatus, to be finally wound up on a drum 15. During the passage of the fabric to the luster machine, the urea and the formalin covering the bristles react to form a plastic material which coats these bristles, making them rigid and shining them. The fabric is finished i.e. stretched, sprayed and mowed.

   The fabrics treated by applying the process according to the invention have the best appearance. In particular, the "Teddy-bear" really have the appearance of so-called "golden sheep" fur.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   Sprinkling with formalin, brushing, the subsequent passage to the squeezing rollers 10 as well as to the polishing machine 11, give rise to the release of deleterious vapors. Also, the machines used for these purposes will be placed in highly ventilated enclosures. They will, for example, be placed under hoods or hoods 16 provided with ducts 17 to suck the vapors. In this sense, precautions will especially be taken with regard to polishing machines. The ventilation devices 14 will also advantageously be provided with conduits 17 for the suction of the vapors.

   On the other hand, a single pass through the luster may not be enough to finish fabrics with particularly coarse pile.

  In such a case, the treated tape is subjected to one or more additional passes before it arrives at the aeration apparatus, each time comprising: spraying the pile under pressure with formalin solution with immediately consecutive brushing, followed by 'A passage between squeezing rollers as well as a treatment by a polishing machine. In the various polishing machines, the pile of the fabric is then straightened, preferably, in different directions.

   The method according to the invention improves the appearance of the fluffy tissues without in any way affecting the other qualities of the bristles.

   It should be understood that the invention is in no way limited to the embodiment described above and that many modifications can be made to it without departing from the scope of the present patent application.

   It would be possible, in particular, to use dryers provided with any heating system.

   It would also be possible to use polishing machines, the cylinders of which are heated by any suitable means.
