les contacts des dits moyens de commande étant fermés quand les dits moyens de commande sont actionnés pour libérer un itiné- raire, des moyens de relâchement individuels associés à chacun des dits dis- positifs de maintien ditinéraire et un circuit de fonctionnement pour chacun des dits moyens de relâchement indiwiduels comprenant les contacts des'Moyens de détection associés à 1?itinéraire ou à l'itinéraire partiel pour lequel le dit dispositif de maintien d;

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

RAILWAY NEEDLE SIGNALING AND CONTROL SYSTEM.
The present invention relates to railway switch signaling and control systems.
In such systems, a route on the track diagram often spans a considerable distance and it may include several units of mobile track equipment such as points or double junctions. When a train travels such a route, it meets the units of the mobile track equipment one after another o In the past, it was necessary to wait until the train had left the route to release any of the units of the mobile track equipment included in the route - to laugh.
When the same unit of track mobile equipment, for example a set of points at the start of the route, is used for more than one route this can cause a delay if one needs to clear another route using those points. , when the train has left these turnouts but before the train has left the route.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to overcome this difficulty.
According to one of the features of the present invention, a railroad switch signaling and control system comprises means for controlling the establishment of routes included in a set of routes, at least some of the routes. being divided into one or more partial routes, a plurality of means for establishing routes or establishing partial routes,
the various partial routes of a route being controlled by means for establishing different routes and means which operate in response to the operation of said control means for establishing a route comprising a plurality of partial routes so as to causing the corresponding plurality of route establishment means to operate to establish the selected route.
According to another characteristic of the invention, a system of

for which said route keeping device is in place, is occupied, and comprising contacts which are closed when said control means are actuated to release the route for which the route keeping means are in place.
According to another feature of the invention, a railway switch signaling and control system comprises in combination means for controlling the establishment and release of each of a number of certain routes. at least of these routes being divided into partial routes, a plurality of route establishment means each controlling one or more routes and / or partial routes, the partial routes of the same route being controlled by means establishment of different routes,

route is established and which avoids the operation of said individual release means if the route or the partial route, for which said route maintenance means are established, is occupied, and which includes contacts which are closed when the said control means are operated to release a route for which the route keeping device is operated
Other objects, characteristics and advantages of the invention will become apparent on reading the following description of exemplary embodiments, the said description being given in relation to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figo 1 shows a track diagram comprising several routes, Figo 2 shows a typical route taken from the track diagram of Figo 1, Figo 3 shows the control circuit of the route setting means, namely in the present system a combiner, for the route of Figo 2,

Figo 4 shows the combinator entrainment and blocking circuit, Fig 5 shows the combiner control circuit controlling a partial section of the route of figo 2, Figo 6 shows the combiner control circuit controlling a other section of the route of Figo 2,
and Figo 7 shows the blocking circuit of the combiner
The invention is described in relation to a signaling and control system for railway points in which the different routes have positions assigned to them on an electro-mechanical combiner. The route setting means and arrangements tives for maintaining routes are combiners and each combiner functions
EMI3.2
can be used as a route-setting device or as a route-keeping device, as the case may be. The routes and partial routes which cannot be established at the same time receive positions as far as possible on the same combiner Thus as can be seen at Figo 1,
all the routes to which signal 5 gives access appear on the same combiner o These routes are therefore protected by a mechanical blocking since it is physically impossible for the combiner to be in two positions at the same time o This allows a considerable saving of devices electrical blocking.
A selected route is established by operating a panel key
EMI3.3
which causes 1-drive of the combiner which controls the route to the correct position and the operation of the relays and the control equipment.
EMI3.4
control which establish this route, if it is not incompatible with the routes already established. This is also applicable to other forms of signaling and control systems of railway switches.
The track diagram shown in Figo 1 is a part of a larger diagram It includes a line A going from signal 4 to signal 33 and can be used by traffic in both directions following cases As the show the arrows shown next to the signals, signals 33 and 4 relate to different traffic directions o Track B runs from signal 5 to track section 49 BT and is used for traffic going from the bottom to the top of the Figure, except for purely local journeys for branch traffic controlled by signal 34 and for traffic entering track B from track Co Such trains would normally be destined for track A when it is used for the traffic going from top to bottom of the figure,
The double track D and E is a branch of the two tracks B and C and trains can pass from one of
EMI3.5
these lanes to lane A by means of the double and d9igt junctions, transfer lines, for example the double junctions 8, 9, 10 and 12, 13 and 14. Tracks F and G cross tracks A and B but trains cannot go directly from tracks A or B to tracks F or G, points 23, 24, 25 and 26 are locks designed to protect tracks F and Go Similar locks can be provided on tracks F and G to protect tracks A and B.
The diagram in Figo 1 also shows some routes
EMI3.6
partials which are designated by 3E5,, E19 5Ele 4Wlfl 4W2 and 9W2o The typical route considered is route l.blB3 and it is represented in Figo 20 This route goes from signal 4. by needles 6 jtssqu9 to signal 34 . It is made up of three partial routes, the first of the signal 4
EMI3.7
at the beginning of the partial route 41 being designated by the name of the route, namely 4B30 The other partial routes are obviously 4W1 and 4W2.
In the accompanying drawings, the contacts which are controlled by the combiner are represented by thickened parts of the conductor on which they act. At one end is shown a round or pivot point and at the other end is a lance-shaped sign with the tip in contact with the thickened part or a J-shaped sign with the curved end separated from the thickened part o In both cases,
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
an inscription near the lance-shaped sign or near the J-shaped sign indicates the circumstances in which the contact is open and a number represents the combiner arranged at the pivot point o A lance-shaped sign has been shown to indicate that the contact is closed in all positions except those indicated.
For example, in Figo 4, there is
EMI4.1
a combiner contact which bears the inscription "4B3 = END" near the lance-shaped sign and 11 at the pivot point. This means that it is controlled by a cam of combiner 11 and is closed in all positions of the combiner except for the positions of position 4B3 at the end of its movement ;, by
EMI4.2
example it is closed from the start until it reaches position 4B3.
When a J-shaped sign has been shown, it indicates that
EMI4.3
the contact is closed only when the combiner is in the position indicated.
Thus there are two cam contacts of combiner 11 which each have a J-shaped sign bearing the reference 4B3 Each of. these contacts is open in all switch positions except those corresponding to
EMI4.4
rab30 The prefix E associated with the indication, for example near the cam of combiner 11 we have EH near the J-shaped sign, means that the contact is closed half-position before the indicated position o For example in the case of indicated the contact is closed in the rest position, which is indicated by H and it closes half a position before it reaches the rest position.
The relay contacts are shown on the wires on which they act without thickening of the conductor and have a pivot point
EMI4.5
at one end and a small V at the other If the contact is drawn above the conductor it is a working contact, i.e. it closes when the relay operates, if it is shown below the conductor it is a resting contact it is that is, it opens when the relay is operating.
The windings of the relays or electromagnets are represented by rectangles, the length of which is in contact with the conductor, when the base of the rectangle is represented by a thickened line, the relay is slow release @ Routes are designated by a number, a letter and a numbreo The first digit designates the signal which gives access to the route,
EMI4.6
the letter represents the type of route while the last number indicates the number of routes commanded by this signalo A route assigned the letter "Au is a route for fast direct trains, for example a route.res .dflexpress9 un. route B. is a direct route at medium speed, for example a local route or at medium speed,
a route-
EMI4.7
raire C is a route for movement or a diversion route. Thus the route, 183 is the third route to which signal 4 gives access and it is a route at medium speed o The same travel route on a lane diagram sometimes appears as the same list of routes as several types of routes o In the case where it is planned to use them for several purposes different designations are necessary because the different routes use arms of
EMI4.8

'In the indication.d? A partial route the first digit usually indicates the signal controlling the routes which use it if a partial route is used by several routes starting from several signals, for example at Fig. 1 the partial routes 4Wl and 4W2
EMI4.9
which are part of route! 3 can also be used by 19 route from signal 5 to signal 35.
The letter indicates the direction of travel in this case, E for East (or North) and W for West (or South) o When the same partial route is used in both directions it is considered as two partial routes, the E and the W les differan cianto Likewise if a route can be used in both directions. we consider it as two routes
EMI4.10
When it is desired to establish a route 4 B3 so that it can be used by a train, the key of the control panel corresponding to 4B3 is actuated so as to take the appropriate position and it opens its control.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
rest tact N and closes its working contact R (see Fig.
3) o Each of these contacts is drawn in the form of a circle in contact with the conductor in which it is inserted, the contacts of a key position being available.
EMI5.1
sés â, the interior of a dotted rectangle o Thus a dotted rectangle surrounds the two contacts 4B3 of the key, N which is normally closed and R which is normally open o
It is assumed that there are no established routes the use of which is incompatible with the reestablishment of route 4B3.
Thus the route is free and when the work contact R of 4B3 closes, it completes the circuit of relay 11ZRD. This relay when activated causes
EMI5.2
the movement of the combiner Nro 119 by which the route 4B3 is controlled, to the position corresponding to this route
We will now give an extract from the distribution table of routes and partial routes on the combiner

Table II shows all the assignments of signal-4 and in part the assignments of signal 50 When the same distributions are used.
EMI6.1
For two routes, for example 4AI and 4G4 or 4B3 and lC6 opest that there are two routes of different types on the same lane.
There are two cases in which the routes have only a partial route, for example 4B2 and 4C5 (a medium speed route and a diversion route) which go from signal 4 to turnouts 6 in the normal position and along the road.
EMI6.2
track A (section of track 13T) up to double junction 12-13-l4o It then changes to a signal on track E (which is not shown.) / L9other case is constituted by 5B2 and 504 which passes from signal 5 through the needles 6 in normal position and needles 12 directed towards track E and at the same signal as that or ends 1? route 4B2o The system from which Figso 1 and 2 and the tables are extracted ;, includes routes having up to five partial routes.
To return from there to the typical route, the operation of the key 4B3 closes its working contact R and opens the rest contact N thus closing the circuit of the relay 11ZRD which controls the combiner SSll which controls
EMI6.3
route 4B3. When this relay operates, it causes the combiner SS11 to be driven out of its rest position asqa9 to the position corresponding to route 4B3.
The 11ZRD relay circuit is closed by the next path from the positive battery terminal -. a series of con-

A combiner has a locking bar which holds it in position when it is stopped When the switch is driven an electromagnet drives the locking bar out

born to then use the 133o key In this case, the combiner returns to the rest position after having left the position corresponding to 4B2 and it is pulled from the rest position so as to be placed on the position corresponding to 4B3.
Some of the cam contacts which are included in this circuit may be open if partial routes incompatible with route 4B3 are used as in the case where routes are used.

rires incompatible with the route J.B3 are occupied, When the 11ZRD relay operates it closes a contact of the 11D relay circuit (Figo 4)
which causes the operation of the llZL magnet which activates the withdrawal of the locking bar of the eombineuro.
EMI6.12
The 11ZI also activates the electromagnet 11Z of the combiner 11 and the start relay of the motor 3.NISo The combiner is therefore driven as long as the 11ZRD relay is actuated When the combiner SS11 reaches the position corresponding to 4B3 the cam contact immediately following the

tact R of the switchboard key in Figo 3 s9o ra and causes the release of relay 11ZRDo This also causes the release of relay 112'R of 1? electromagnet 11Z and of relay 1MS in Figa 4.
In Figo 49 the wires marked 1 are connected to the positive terminal
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
of the battery through the control relay and the contacts of combiners whose reference numbers are less than 11 and the conductors marked 2 are connected to the negative terminal of the battery by similar arrangements of combiners whose reference numbers are greater than 11. This.
EMI7.1
arrangement is shown in a simplified manner in Figo 7 in laquez '"! the dotted lines in series with the relays ZD (Combiner drive) represent sets of contacts such as those which appear in series with 11ZD at the bottom. Figo 4. From Fig. 7 it will be understood that each combiner drive relay ZD opens the circuit of all the other ZD relays.
All relays except the 1ZD and 25ZD end relays open the positive wire in front of them and the negative wire behind them. Gum 1ZD and 25ZD are the relays arranged at the ends it is not necessary that they open both the positive wire in front of them and the negative wire behind them.
EMI7.2
The set of contacts in series with 11ZD in Figo 4 gives a certain number of operating circuits of the llZDo relay.Three of these circuits can be described as follows: 1. A circuit controlled by 11ZRD = 6 is this circuit by means
EMI7.3
of which the 11ZD combiner drive relay is actuated so as to cause the combiner to be driven out of its rest position to a position corresponding to the establishment of a
itinerary
2. - A circuit controlled by 11ZND - C9 is the circuit using
EMI7.4
of which the 11ZD relay operates so as to cause the switch to be driven from the position corresponding to re-establishment of a route to the rest position.
30 - The cam contact marked A in series with the 11ZL contact itself in parallel with an llZDo contact The cam controlling this contact is called cam A and it opens the circuit in each position of the combiner.
It is in fact cut so as to open the contact for a very short time and then to close it. It thus ensures that the combiner is correctly
EMI7.5
centered when it stops. In series with this cam contact is an 11ZL relay contact which is closed when 1-solenoid 11ZD of the lock bar is actuated, ie when the combiner is moving. The 11ZD relay contact is a blocking contact that maintains the circuit independent of the llZLo contact.
EMI7.6
The operating circuits of a combiner drive relay, for example the ZD relay, may comprise a fourth circuit consisting of a contact controlled by a cam which is closed for all positions of the combiner which are not used.
This is to prevent
EMI7.7
the combiner does not stop in an unused position This contact also ensures that if the combiner stops in an unused position following a stoppage of the current supply it returns to the position rest as soon as the power is restored. All the positions of the combiner SS11 are used so that this circuit is not necessary for this combiner. However, the combiners SS4 and SS5 having unnecessary positions require such a circuit.
EMI7.8
Considering again in FIG. 3p it will be assumed that the SS11m combiner reached has been stopped and properly centered in the position corresponding to route 4B3. The llZC relay which checked that the combiner has reached the correct position and s9y is stopped is now working
EMI7.9
by means of one of its "operating circuits which is peculiar to the route 1, B3o For each route controlled by the combiner SS11 there is an operating circuit which is closed when the combiner has reached the position corresponding to 1? Route chosen A multiplication sign indicates the other circuits in operation.
The circuit runs from the positive terminal of the battery applied by the R contact of the chosen route 4B3, a contact controlled by a cam which is closed only when the combiner is in.

the position corresponding to 19 route9 in 1? example chosen 4B3, -and - a rest contact of relay llZLo Thus relay 11ZC can only operate if the combiner is stopped in the position corresponding to 19 route chosen,
and in the example considered it proves that the combiner SS11 is indeed

stopped in the position corresponding to 4B3o The rest contact 11Z1 proves that the 11ZL blocking electromagnet has released which means that the combi- nator SS11 is blocked and has closed its rest contact o When the 11ZC relay operates it closes NO contact so as to actuate the relays

mutual aid 11.ZCP1 and llZop2.
The combiner 11 has therefore operated and it is ready to establish the part of 1Pitiriéraire that it controls. When the combiner SS11 is set up for the route 4B3p the needles 6 and 12 are placed in a known manner in the position corresponding to the route 4B3. that is, needle 6 is placed so that it goes from line A to line B and needle 12 is in the normal position
The combiner 4 (Figo 5) which is the combiner which controls the I-

partial route 1, .. Wl is then actuated by means of the following circuit g positive terminal of the battery, contact of the combiner cam 7 which opens the circuit if the incompatible partial route 5E5 (and which is not shown in Figs. 1 and 2) is established;
, normally open contact of relay 1lZCPlp cam contact of combiner 11 closed in the position corresponding to 1 - establishment of the route 4B3, cam contact of combiner 4 (4Vl-END), cam contact of combiner 4 closed only in rest position (EH) ,,
winding of 4ZRDy negative terminal of the battery o The 4ZRD relay operates and by its

contact it shortens the EHo cam It can be seen that the circuit also comprises a cam contact of the combiner SSll which is established when this combiner is in the position corresponding to the route 4B3 and a contact of the relay

11ZCP19 which gives a double check that the combiner ce. It has reached and stopped in the position corresponding to the route 4830 The contact EH is similar to the EN contact of the combiner circuit SSllo The other operating circuits of the relay / .ZRB are not shown they include a closed circuit when routes 5A1 or 503 are used as these routes use all

4W1 (see table II) o In the case of 5l1 or 5C3, the operating circuit of the 4ZRD relay comprises the part of the circuit going from the 4Wl-END cam contact of the SS4 combiner to the negative terminal of the battery on the same

combiners than those used for lWl and 1W2 (see table I) so that protection is obtained by mechanical blocking o We therefore now have three combiners (SS11, SS4 and SS5) which are placed in positions corresponding to 1? route 4B3 . The remaining apparatuses, which set the needles and control the signals, do not form part of the present invention and will therefore not be described.
EMI8.8
The signal control relay is actuated by a circuit which is closed only if all the combiners necessary to establish the route are in the correct position and all the needles and dual junctions are in the correct position. When this relay operates, thus proving that all the devices have been correctly placed, it causes the release of the sighalo.
When the train which has noticed that the signal indicates that the track is free passes signal 4.the signal automatically returns to position

normal, the switchman then replaces the key from the table corresponding to route 4B3 to the normal position,
which causes the opening of the work contact R and the closing of the break contact No The first effect of this operation
EMI8.10
vre is to open the 11ZC relay circuit (Figo 3) in l33 R so that this relay releases, causing the input of the input relays 17.ZCP1 and 11ZCP to drop. The 11ZND relay circuit which controls the return circuit in position of the combiner SSll is then closed as follows: positive terminal of the battery p neutral contact of the relay 11ZD (normally closed) N contacts of the
EMI8.11
ÀB3, cam contact of the SS11 combiner which is closed only in the posi- ï corresponding to the route 4B3 work contacts of the channel relays 6BfR è R9 contact 4NPS contacts IIZCPI and llZCP2g winding of relay 11ZND and negative of the battery.
The closing of the contacts of the 6BT and 13T channel relays (see Figo 1) indicates that these channels are not occupied.
EMI8.12
These are the track sections which should not be occupied when the

guilles 6 or 12 can be released so that they can be used again.
The contact of the 4NPS relay indicates that this relay is actuated again.
EMI9.1
fact that this relay is actuated proves either that there is no train approaching signal 4, or that signal 4 is in the danger position from sufficient
EMI9.2
long enough for a train approaching this signal to stop.
In the latter case, it operates through a time delay relay so as to close its make contact o The third case in which the 4NPS relay operates is when a train has exceeded signal 4 since the
EMI9.3
Approach blocking ceases to be effective, the route being maintained by a route keeper. In the third case, other contacts such as 6BTR and 13TR prevent the operation of the 11ZND relay if necessary.
The contacts of relays 11ZCP1 and 11ZCP2 show that these relays have released so that 90n can allow the operation of 11ZND
The ZND relay 11, while functioning, is blocked by its contact connected to the positive terminal of the battery by a cam of the combiner SS11 closed in all positions except the rest position o As can be seen in Fig.
4, 11ZND relay also causes the relay to operate
EMI9.4
11ZD which as it has already been described command 1 has drive of the combiner SSll When the combiner SS11 reaches the rest position the relay 11ZND releases
EMI9.5
and opens the combiner drive circuit As previously, the contact of cam A of combiner SS11 ensures correct stopping in the rest position,
A contact of the 11ZCP relay which is open when the llZCP relay releases (see above) opens the 4ZG circuit (Figo 5) which consequently
EMI9.6
release9 followed by the 4zips relay so that a circuit is prepared for the 4ZNDo relay This circuit is as follows (see Figo 5) positive terminal of the battery, rest contact of the 4ZD relay,
Combiner SS6 cam contact closed in all positions except for those corresponding to routes 5Al and 503 which include 19 partial route 4WL, combiner SS11 cam contact closed in all positions except corresponding ones
EMI9.7
to routes% B3 and 4069 combiner cam contact: 854 closed only in the position corresponding to 4Wl, contact 17TR which is closed if channel 17T (Figso 1 and 2) is not occupied, contact 4ZCP indicating that relay 4ZCP is at rest, winding of relay 4ZND, negative terminal of the battery.
The cam contact of the. combiner SS11 indicates that this combiner is in the rest position This contact is also closed if the combiner SS11 moves to the rest position but the blocking circuit (see Figo 7) allows to be assured that only one combiner is driven at the same time o Contact 17TR proves that the track section 17T, which is the track between hands 18 and 17 is free o Relay 4ZND therefore operates if these conditions are
EMI9.8
fulfilled, that is to say if the combiner SS11 is in the idle position if no other route uses channel 4Wl and if channel 17T is free, and it then initiates the return to the idle position of combiner SS4 from the same way as that described in relation to the return of the SSLL combiner to the rest position.
The SS5 combiner returns in the same way to the rest position .: when the SS4 combiner is in the rest position and when the channel 25T, which is the channel between the needles 25 and 26 is free, the return to position
EMI9.9
of rest taking place by the circuit shown in Figo 60
The points indicated on the track diagram are controlled by the respective combiners to which the partial routes which contain these points are assigned. Thus the combiner SS11 controls the needles 6 and 12, the combiner SS4 controls the needles 17 and 18 and the combiner SS5 controls the needles 25 and 26.
In the exemplary embodiment, describes when a partial route
EMI9.10
and a route are incompatible, 19 route is blocked if 19 partial route is incompatible with the first section of 19 route. Partial routes are blocked with respect to one another when they directly interfere with each other.
Thus9 as seen in FIG. if the partial route 9W2 is used or occupied when the switchman activates the key
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
corresponding to 19 route 4B3 on the panel;, combiners 11 and 4 (corresponding to the first partial route of 4B3 and to 1? partial route 4W1) can be set up but 1? route 4W2 cannot be established However if 1? route 9W2 ceases to be used or occupied after the key operation, that is to say during the setting up of the combiners SS1 and SS4, the combiner SS5 can be set up from SS4 as well as 'it was explained
In the system described the partial routes are established one after the other starting from the first, but this is not essential.
They could be established in the reverse order or else all at the same time.
If the circuits of the combiners which have been represented are extremely simple, this is due to the fact that the tools contain only the parts of the circuit which are applicable to the chosen route. There would naturally be other operating circuits of these combiners since several routes or partial routes can be controlled by the same combiner Thus the circuits shown are simplified circuits extracted from complete circuits to show the invention which has been described o The basic system using combiners for railway signaling has been described in British Patent No. 496,495.
