<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

ROTARY TOOL HOLDER FOR WORKING WITH CYLINDRICAL PARTS.
The invention relates to tool holders in which the tool moves around a cylindrical part of revolution, along a straight section of this part and which can be used on parts of various diameters.
It relates more particularly to the case where the tool is a torch, for example an oxycutting torch and is maintained at a constant distance from the part during the rotation of the latter around the part, whatever the diameter of this part. , by three clamping and guide rollers, with axes parallel to that of the part; it is characterized in that the tool holder is constituted by two jaws carrying the rollers and articulated to one another, their free ends being elastically biased towards each other, and the rollers being spaced around the part, the angular difference between two consecutive rollers being less than 180 degrees and this angular difference being preferably equal to 120 degrees.
This arrangement allows the easy installation of the device, for example on a tube to be cut, by opening the two jaws, and ensures clamping of the rollers on the part at three points evenly distributed around the part and therefore better guidance.
The tool holder also has the following features:
The axis of articulation of the two jaws, parallel to the axis of the part, coincides with the axis of one of the rollers, the axes of each of the other two rollers being respectively carried by these jaws and being able to be moved on each of the jaws substantially in a plane joining the extreme positions of the axes of the rollers when the latter are in contact with the parts of maximum and minimum diameter. this characteristic can be obtained by a form of realization

sation consisting in that each of the two rollers or pairs of rollers is carried by an articulated arm whose articulation axis is located in the perpendicular plane, in the middle of the.
straight line joining the centers of the roller, for the two extreme positions of said roller corresponding to its contact with the cylindrical parts of maximum and minimum diameter, the arms having a sufficient length so that the displacement is substantially coincident with the straight line defined above, these articulated arms being combined with locking means on the jaws.
According to a variant of the invention, each of the rollers or pairs of rollers is carried by a part connected to the corresponding jaw by a slide.
These arrangements make it possible to adapt the tool holder easily and quickly to parts of various diameters while ensuring effective clamping on the part. The points of contact of the rollers with the workpiece are angularly spaced by 120, whatever the diameter of the tube on which the device is used and the spacing of the free ends of the jaws is substantially constant, so that the tensioning device does not requires only a very low amplitude adjustment, allowing this tightening to be adapted to the hardness of the parts to be worked. In addition, the clamping on the tube is all the stronger as the diameter of the part is smaller, and substantially proportional to the inverse of the diameter of the part.
The first embodiment above of the invention applied to tube torch cutting is described below by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is an end view of the device in position on a tube.
Figure 2 is a side view of the same device.
Figure 3 is an end view of a variant.
The device comprises two rigid jaws composed of flanges 1 and 1a, articulated around an axis 3, enclosing a tube 4 by three pairs of rollers 5, 6,7. The rollers 5 are carried by the axis 3 of articulation of the two jaws. The rollers 6 and 7 are carried by arms 8 and 2- articulated at 10 and 11 on the jaws 1 and 2. The clamping force on the tube is provided by a removable tensioning device comprising a lever 12 articulated at 13 to l end of the jaw 2. This lever comprises a pin 14 to which is fixed the end of a spring 15, the other end of which is integral with a rod 16 which can hook into one of the notches 17 of the jaw. jaw 1.
This arrangement makes it possible to tension the spring and to adjust the force exerted, depending on the nature of the tube, and to release the ends of the jaws for the installation of the device on a tube to be cut. To facilitate this operation, the ends of the jaws carry operating handles 18, 19.
The tube 4 shown in the drawing is the tube of the largest diameter on which the device can be mounted. To be able to use it on tubes of smaller diameter, such as the tube 4a, the articulated arms 8 and 9 can be moved around the axes 10 and 11 integral with the jaws and be made integral with the latter, for example. by pins embedded in its bores 20,21 of the arm and the corresponding bores 22, 23 of the jaw, arranged in two concentric circles, The bores 22,23 are arranged along sectors of a circle, the center of which is coincident with the axes 10 and 11 of pivoting of the articulated arms. Each orifice 22 or 23 corresponds to a determined diameter of tube to be cut on condition that the corresponding orifices are used on each jaw.
To ensure a distribution of the points of contact of the rollers evenly spaced 120 apart around the tube, whatever the diameter of the latter, the points of contact of the rollers 6 and 7 with the tubes of various diameters must be on the straight line joining the point of contact 34 of the roller 5 with the points of contact 24, 25 of the rollers 6 and 7 with the tube of maximum diameter.
The centers 26,27 of the rollers must therefore be on lines 26,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
26a, 27, 27a parallel to the preceding lines. The solution of the pivoting arms achieves this condition all the more precisely the greater the length of the arms 10-26, 11-27, provided that the axes 10 and 11 lie in the planes. parallel to the axis of the tube and perpendicular to the middle of rights 26-26a, 27-27a.
According to the variant shown in FIG. 2, a geometrically exact solution is obtained by placing the rollers 6 and 7 on supports 28, 29 which can slide in the guides 30 and 31 integral with the jaws 1 and 2.
The torch 32 is mounted in a support 33 which can slide parallel to the axis of the workpiece in a guide 34, so that its axis is normal to the tube and meets it at the point of contact 34 on the generator 35 on which makes the contact of the roller 5 with the tube. It is articulated around an axis 36 perpendicular to the axis of the tube to make it possible to make chamfered cuts.
The rollers 5 drive a speed limiter device 37 which ensures a constant linear speed of the cutting flame around the tube during the rotation of the tool holder.
The device shown can be adapted by adjusting the position of the arms 8 and 9 to tubes whose diameters can vary in a ratio of at least one to four. The rollers have a knurled groove, the edges of which have sharp points in the form of points which provide the good transverse adhesion necessary for making straight cuts.
At least one of the rollers or pairs of rollers can be arranged in a radial plane different from that of the others, without harming the guidance.
