 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

   Comme on l'a déjà indiqué plus haut, le dispositif peut être agen- cé pour une marche en continu. A cet effet, les produits à imprégner et qui arrivent par exemple sur un ruban transporteur, peuvent être introduits ou tomber dans le dispositif à travers une'ouverture prévue dans la paroi en bout frontale, les produits déjà traités tombant au dehors ou étant éva- cués, de façon continue, par une ouverture prévue dans la paroi postérieure, comme montré par exemple dans la figure 2. pour assurer un entraînement pro- gressif et constant des produits le long de la paroi du cylindre, c'est-à- dire le long de l'axe du cylindre à râteaux, il est indiqué d'incliner lé- gèrement le tambour sur l'horizontale; de façon que la paroi en bout posté- rieure de celui-ci se trouve plus bas que la 'paroi en bout frontale ;

     enoutre, on peut prévoir dans le même but des dispositifs supplémentaires, qui seront décrits ci-après. on a constaté que l'entraînement progressif et constant dès pro- duits à imprégner le long du tambour, c'est-à-dire suivant la direction de l'axe du cylindre à râteaux, peut être favorisé par exemple endisposant les dents des râteaux ou des groupes de dents suivant une ligne hélicoïdale sur le corps du cylindre. Un exemple d'une telle disposition est montré schéma- tiquement dans la figure 3, ou l'on voit, développée à plat dans le plan du dessin, l'aire latérale d'un cylindre parmi de séries de trois dents, dispo- sées en hélice. barres Les éléments des râteaux peuvent en outre être constitués par des barres, par exemple en forme de lates plus ou moins larges, des bras batteurs, ou des rayons.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

    REVENDICATIONS.

  DEVICE FOR, IMPREGNING CHIPS AND FIBERS.

   The invention relates to a device for impregnating chips and fibers by spraying.

   In all cases where the material to be treated must be wetted or impregnated, in a uniform manner as possible, but with a minimum consumption of liquid substances, capable of distribution by spraying, one or more nozzles are preferably used. for the application of the impregnating agent or agents, the spraying being carried out most often in apparatus, tanks or closed rooms, in order to prevent the escape of unused vapors of the liquid d 'impregnation. By practicing continual churning, agitation and redistribution, an attempt is made to expose the material repeatedly to the watering in order to ensure complete and uniform wetting of all particles.

   Where these are wetting materials which are such as to be freely stackable, for example, and possibly have a low specific weight and / or where, due to their shape, these materials slowly descend, flutter or swirl in a space filled with air, and that on the other hand the shape of their particles must not be altered or deteriorated, it is already known to apply methods in which materials of this nature, for example chips or fibers, are caused to fall in free fall in chimneys or towers, while being subjected to a watering preferably lateral, these solutions having been adopted, because, in the cases envisaged, it has been found that the mixing devices and common churners are unsuitable, even sometimes harmful,

   by virtue of their agitation, percussion and churning organs.

  The spraying of the fluttering down material offers the advantage of complete wetting of all the individual particles in a usually well distributed material stream. However, this method gives a less favorable result with products falling too quickly and, moreover, involves a bulk and a significant consumption. It is true that attempts have been made to reduce the speed of fall by creating air displacements, as well as by other means. this in turn requires complicated installations. The air blown in to produce an ascending vortex requires the provision of an air outlet at other points of the device.

 important factor; nevertheless, the material dQ; it / snùventzrtràverée 'L1p :: rnsiei1 + s'. times around before being' impregnated to a sufficient degree. The squels gradually flow along these walls and attach to them, so that sometimes complicated cleaning facilities have to be resorted to. such an impregnation has already been carried out in rotating drums arranged horizontally, in which the products churned or agitated by rotation are called upon to be exposed in a more or less constant manner to the action of the divergent jets coming from individual nozzles or grouped.

  Such devices are notably less cumbersome than an installation of a dampening tower, make it possible to treat a material which would sink too quickly to the bottom in a tower and make possible a certain, often sufficient, cleaning of the interior wall of the drum. , by the friction of the churned products. on the other hand, in these latter devices, the sprinkling liquid encounters a layer of material which is appreciably more dense or compact than is the material which, in a tower installation, descends in a fluttering state and in the de-stacked, so that wetting in a drum requires large amounts of liquid and is easily liable to remain incomplete.

   In the case, in particular, of a material which is not completely dry or which has already absorbed a certain quantity of liquid, pellets or conglomerates easily form, this more especially in the case of materials which s' tangling and easily felt and which are particularly desirable in certain industries, for example those which produce boards or other articles of chips and fibers, precisely because of this tendency to felting or tangling. The inner part of such coils or conglomerates is still hardly accessible to the wetting liquid, and an unevenly impregnated material results, even when these packed masses are subsequently caused to open.

   The invention aims to establish a device offering the advantages of the aforementioned devices for impregnation both in tower and drum, without having their drawbacks. According to the invention, this device comprises a horizontal drum having a rotating cylindrical casing and walls at fixed ends, for receiving the products to be impregnated, this drum containing a rake cylinder rotating against the direction of rotation. tation of the cylindrical casing and at a greater speed than the latter and arranged close to the ascending cylindrical wall, this drum further containing nozzles arranged on the other side with respect to the rake cylinder, one can adopt an arrangement according to which the fixed or non-rotating end walls, or one thereof,

   serve as a support for the rake cylinder and furthermore receive the support devices for the nozzles or sets of nozzles. The speed of rotation and the height position of the rake cylinder are preferably adjustable.

   The appended drawing shows schematically examples of execution of the device according to the invention.

   Figure 1 is a front elevation (loading side for continuous operation) with the end wall omitted; FIG. 2 is a rear elevation (unloading side paired with continuous operation) including the corresponding end wall.

   The index 1 designates the cylindrical wall rotating in the direction of arrow 2 and the ascending part of which is close to the rake cylinder 3 (shown here as a hedgehog drum) which rotates in the direction of arrow 4. therefore, the material m, constantly carried along by the ascending wall of the casing, is grasped by the rake cylinder and thrown by it, so that, before falling to the bottom, this material passes through in a perfectly dislocated state the zone subjected to the action of the nozzle system 5, after which this cycle is repeated. The direction taken by the material thrown by the hedgehog can be determined or influenced by

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 guide screens suitably provided near the rake cylinder.

   In FIG. 2, the index 6 designates the rear wall which, like the anterior end wall, is fixed and is connected to the rotating cylindrical wall using known sealing means; 7 designates an opening made in this rear wall and provided with an interception screen for the material already impregnated which is evacuated at this place in the case of continuous walking and which had been set in motion by the cycle. liner for rakes; 8 designates the bearing of this cylinder in the rear wall of the drum.

   When, in the case of a strongly sticky impregnating agent, for example, it is desired to ensure permanent cleaning of the wall of the drum, it is possible to provide, in particular and advantageously, above the rake cylinder, a brushing cylinder. possibly replaceable, rotating in the same direction as the latter, rubbing against the wall of the drum and being able to carry scrapers, blades, etc ... which rub against the latter wall. The bearings of such a brushing cylinder are also fixed in the end walls of the drum. it is easy to arrange either the nozzles or the sets of nozzles, or their support members on the end walls so as to allow replacement of these nozzles or sets of nozzles, which will be very advantageous in the case of agents of agglutinating impregnation.

   In addition, the nozzles can be individually mounted in a replaceable manner on the pipes which feed them.

   As already indicated above, the device can be arranged for continuous operation. For this purpose, the products to be impregnated and which arrive for example on a conveyor belt, can be introduced or fall into the device through an opening provided in the front end wall, the products already treated falling out or being evacuated. continuously, through an opening provided in the rear wall, as shown for example in FIG. 2 to ensure a progressive and constant entrainment of the products along the wall of the cylinder, that is to say along the axis of the rake cylinder, it is indicated to tilt the drum slightly to the horizontal; so that the rear end wall thereof lies lower than the front end wall;

     in addition, it is possible to provide for the same purpose additional devices, which will be described below. it has been observed that the progressive and constant driving of the products to be impregnated along the drum, that is to say along the direction of the axis of the rake cylinder, can be favored, for example by disposing the teeth of the rakes or groups of teeth following a helical line on the cylinder body. An example of such an arrangement is shown diagrammatically in figure 3, where we see, developed flat in the plane of the drawing, the lateral area of one cylinder among series of three teeth, arranged helix. bars The elements of the rakes can also consist of bars, for example in the form of more or less wide slats, beater arms, or spokes.

   The blades in the form of slats can also be arranged in a helix on their support cylinder, according to a particular embodiment, the main movement of the products can be completed by a progressive transport of the latter in the direction of movement. the axis of the cylinder, that is to say in the longitudinal direction of the drum, placing the slat-shaped vanes obliquely to the axis of the cylinder and planting the vanes of successive rows in the cylinder so that they are offset with respect to each other along the axis thereof. In addition, and to intensify the movement of the material along the axis of the cylinder, it is possible to provide on the latter vanes planted obliquely and arranged in a helix. Figure 4 shows some of these arrangements.

   Here, as in fifure 3, the lateral area of the cylinder is developed flat in the plane of the drawing. In section a, it can be seen that the vanes of successive rows are offset with respect to each other along the axis of the cylinder. In section b, the vanes of successive rows are also

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 offset with respect to each other in the direction of the axis of the cylinder, while being slightly inclined with respect to this axis; in section c, the vanes are furthermore arranged in a helix. The different positions of the rake teeth on the cylinder can be adopted alone or in combination with the inclination of the drum to the horizontal.

   The mode of arrangement, the shape and the number of the rake elements (teeth, points, etc.) provided on the rake cylinder, the degree of obliquity of the shoveling members and, possibly their width, as well as the length of the drum for a given free section and the possible inclination of this drum to the horizontal, make it possible to determine the time during which an individual particle of the products must remain in the drum in order to be impregnated. All these measures can be adopted or modified, each time taking into account the peculiarities of the material to be treated.

   When any of the above arrangements are used in conjunction with continuous operation, the discharge of the air introduced for the sprinkling may be combined with the supply of the products to be impregnated, preferably in against the tide with these. This offers the particular advantage that the mist or the residues of impregnating agent, possibly still contained in the exhaust air, will be more or less absorbed by the products to be impregnated and therefore recovered, so that , on the one hand, the air will be partially purified and, on the other hand, the material will undergo in a way a preliminary impregnation before entering the interior of the drum.
