 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Referring now in more detail to the aforesaid illustrative embodiment of the first of the products of the present invention, the starting material, for example, magnesite, having

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 the approximate composition indicated above ,,

   is ground to be reduced to particles of a size such that they will pass through a sieve at about 30 to about 90, preferably about 60 mesh.

   The crushed magnesite is calcined at a temperature of about 500 to 800 C., for about 30 minutes to about an hour.

  A temperature between 600 and 700 C, and a duration of about 40 minutes is preferred. The calcination should not be allowed to stain the magnesite, but it should give rise to residual spark beads of about 1, to about 8%, preferably of about 2.5 to about. 5%. fter 1 wedge the magnesite is ground into particles of a size such that about 93 to about, 98% will pass through a sieve at about 325 mesh.
The foregoing treatment changes a significant portion of the minerals in the magnesite to oxides and causes physical changes therein which activate the latter to provide a medium capable of easily forming filterable precipitates in, for example,

   plant juices containing saccharin as well as easily removing 60 to 90% of their color.

   Referring now in more detail to the aforesaid illustrative embodiment of the second of the products of the present invention, one of the starting materials may be magnesite, preferably having the composition of which it is. discussed above As before, the magnesite is ground to be reduced to particles of such size that they will pass through a sieve at about 30 to about 90, preferably about 60 mesh.

   The crushed magnesia is mixed with the combination products described above which were first reduced to the size of fine particles. Magnesite constitutes from about 85 to about 90% of the mixture, preferably closer to 90%.

   This mixture of magnesite and combined products is calcined at a temperature of about 700 to about 800 ° C. for about 5 minutes to about 30 minutes. Quenching will be avoided, but calcination should give rise to residual ignition losses of about 2 to about 8%, preferably about 3.5%.

   As a result of calcination the carbon is burnt, carbon dioxide is liberated from active metal oxides minerals are produced, and physical changes take place in mica, feldspar and talc, so that this produces a high-efficiency filtering agent capable of easily forming filterable precipitates in, for example, plant juices containing saccharins as well as easily removing 60 to 90% of their color. .

   After calcination, the combined magnesite product mixture is ground into particles of a size such that about 93 to about 98% will pass through a sieve at about 325 mesh.

   If desired, the products obtained by either of the foregoing illustrative embodiments of the present invention can be further reduced to particles of such size as from about 99% to nearly 100%. % will pass through a sieve at about 325 mesh if grinding either the kiln residue or the ground calcined mixture, with part of the solution to be treated, for about one hour to about two hours, to produce a paste. Preferably about half a pound to about 5 pounds of the activated magnesia is added to one gallon of the solution to be treated, and this mixture is then ground to produce the paste. The paste can then be introduced into the main body of the solution to be filtered.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

   It has been found that when the products of the present invention are added to solutions as described in earlier passages of this specification, a heavy flocculate is formed having an excessively porous and uniform structure and precipitating large quantities of wax gums. proteins, fats, etc., contained in the fluid under treatment. The structure of this flocculate is such that it allows very high filtering rates to be obtained and gives rise to extraordinarily lightly colored, clear and shiny filter products. The heavy flocculate forms a filter cake which has an excessively porous and uniform structure from which the valuable solution which normally remains in the filter cake is recovered by replacement during washing.
