Lorsque
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
L'invention a pour objet un nouveau mécanisme de changement de marche de l'organe de transmission présentant notamment les caractéristi- ques et avantages suivants - il est de faible encombrement, peu coûteux et sûr, et ne demande qu'un minimum de place et d'entretien ; - il constitue un nouveau mécanisme de changement de marche automatique dont la commande est impérative et précise, mécanisme plus sûr que les liaisons mécaniques habituelles ;

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
Un collier d'embrayage coulissant axialement 112 présente à une des ses extrémités une partie cannelée intérieurement formant des dents d'embrayage 113 venant en prise avec une rangée de dents d'embrayage 114 formées sur un prolongement vers l'avant du moyeu de l'engrenage 105, les dents 113 pouvant coulisser sur la rangée de dents 114. Une rangée intérieure plus courte de dents d'embrayage 115 est façonnée à 1?intérieur du collier 112, à son autre extrémité et à distance de la partie cannelée 113 ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
comme le montre la fige 3 ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

GEAR CHANGE CONTROL MECHANISM, TRANSMISSION AND
VEHICLE CONTAINING THIS MECHANISM.
The present invention relates to devices for controlling a clutch or a set of gears, and in particular to the selection, effected by a driving device, of the control of an auxiliary driving axle in a vehicle with several. driven axles,
The present invention as applied to the shifting mechanism for connecting the output of an auxiliary transmission (transfer case) to the drive shaft of a front drive axle will be described, and will be described in its description. particular embodiment, as adapted to the operation of the clutch collar of a reversible clutch in the control of the front axle of a vehicle with several driving axles, but the invention is not limited to a particular device of this kind.
It can be applied, for example, to a power sampling shaft.
The gear change mechanism according to the invention, actuated by a motor device, is designed with a view to achieving an improvement over the previous mechanical linkage mechanisms hitherto employed for the same purpose. It includes, as will be seen, a new kind of combination with the main transmission control devices.
It is difficult to achieve a safe mechanical connection transmissive of a movement between two mechanisms movable relative to each other, such as between the gearbox or the main transmission to the vehicle and the transfer case which are mounted independently e sometimes elastically on the vehicle frame. The torque and the thrust reaction of the gears and bearings are transmitted to the gear housings and cause relative movements between them. When
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
this occurs, or the mechanical connection may be deformed, or there may be partial maneuvering.
When the linkage intentionally has a certain amount of play, it would be difficult to control the shifting and excessive or insufficient travel may result in the inability to obtain precise adjustment. Another drawback of mechanical connections lies in the significant space required for the levers, bearings, returns, springs and other parts. Often, in heavy-duty equipment space is so limited that a mechanical connection of the desired strength or size cannot be used.
A mechanical link is also susceptible to damage resulting from road hazards such as sudden movements and falling objects, and the lubrication of mechanical links is difficult in confined spaces; it is often neglected, with the possibility of a breakdown as a consequence.
The subject of the invention is a novel mechanism for changing the gear of the transmission member having in particular the following characteristics and advantages - it is compact, inexpensive and safe, and requires only a minimum of space and maintenance; - it constitutes a new automatic gear change mechanism whose control is imperative and precise, a mechanism that is safer than the usual mechanical connections;
- It comprises a control valve actuated by the vehicle transmission reverse gear bar so as to automatically adjust the pressure of a fluid applied to the operating mechanism (gear shift); - it has a new maneuvering cylinder with double intake and automatic guidance or other element sensitive to the force which. acts on it, which imperatively and automatically brings an auxiliary drive axle mechanism to an intermediate or neutral position whenever there is a loss of fluid pressure or a vacuum in the operating mechanism, thus preventing an opposition between the axles; - It comprises compressed springs for guiding a double-inlet operating cylinder or similar element sensitive to the force acting on it.
The invention also relates to transmission assemblies comprising a control device of the type described above, and to chassis or motor vehicles comprising these transmissions.
These characteristics and advantages and others will become apparent during the description which follows. In the accompanying drawings in which the same references designate the same parts:

Figa 7 shows the structure of the maneuvering cylinder of Fig.5 as it is mounted after the transfer case.
According to the embodiment shown in FIG. 1, this is a schematic of a system using air pressure and in which a conventional transmission 10 with shifting gear set and a transfer case 11 are provided with the shifting mechanism. works according to the invention which combines them in a special way. A control valve assembly 12 is mounted to the transmission housing by means of a bracket 13 for its operative connection to the reciprocating reverse bar 14, as well as we will see it.
A gear shift motor device 15 is mounted on the case of the transfer case 11. The case of the motor device 15 is preferably articulated at 16 to a support 17 rigidly bolted to the transfer case.
On the vehicle, a reservoir 18 serves as a source of compressed air. Its exhaust pipe 19 enters a connector 21 from which feed pipes 22 and 23 go respectively to the control valve and to the gear shift motor device.
The transmission bar 14 is the reciprocating bar customary provided in the normal transmission system, and which is placed in the position indicated in solid lines in FIG. 1 as long as the vehicle is being transmitted for the various forward speeds and in the position shown in dotted lines in fig. 1 only when transmission 10 is in reverse.
The valve assembly 12 has a plunger 24 protruding from it, capable of reciprocating movement, and which is actuated by a cam 25 fixed to the bar 14 by a bolt 26; this cam has an oblique face 27 intended to cooperate with the piston 24 in order to lower it.
A line 28 runs from the control valve 12 to the drive unit 15 and supplies air to the side of a pressure sensitive element opposite the line 23, as will be seen.
The motor device 15 has a rod 29 which protrudes therefrom, capable of a reciprocating movement, pivotally fixed at 31, by pin, mortise and clevis assembly at the upper end of an arm 32 rigidly fixed. on a rod 33 for operating a clutch which projects horizontally from the housing of the transfer case.
Referring now to FIG. 2, the assembly of the control valve 12 comprises a housing 34 provided with a vertical cylindrical cavity 35 open at the top and having a narrower lower part 36. At the bottom of this cavity is formed a narrower opening 37 communicating with a chamber 38, and an annular valve seat is provided in the chamber 38 by an annular rim 39 which projects into an annular end cavity 41 of the housing.
A cover 42 fixed to the housing 34 by bolts 43 closes the cavity 41. A metal valve seat member 44 in the form of a cup, provided with a disc 45 of resilient material arranged to come into contact with the flange 39 is biased towards it. here by a compressed spring 46 guided by a hollow boss 47 of the cover 42. This boss 47 is internally threaded for the purpose of fixing a connector of a compressed air intake pipe 22. Thus, when the cover 42 is fixed on the casing, it compresses the spring 46 to seat the valve element 44 on the rim 39 'in order to close the passage of the fluid between the chamber 38 and the inlet pipe 22.
One side of the housing 34 has a hollow boss 48, threaded internally and for securing the exhaust pipe connector 28, so that the chamber 38 is always open to the exhaust pipe 28. through communication passage 49.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
An annular exhaust valve member 51 is placed in the bore 35, held on the bottom of this cavity by an assembly 50 having a split spring ring and a groove, and by a responsive compression spring 52. between the ring 50 and an annular washer 53 whose outward movement in the direction of 1-axis is prevented by a device comprising, at 54, a ring and a groove.
In the valve member 51 is formed a series of radial orifices communicating with an annular recess 56 of the surface, communicating with a radial channel 57 of the housing opening outwardly onto an exhaust orifice 58 normally covered by a suitable air filter 59.
The piston 24 has a bore 61 at its inner end and several radial openings 62 which are argued with the orifices 55 when the plunger occupies the position of FIG. 2, so that line 28 is then connected to 1.11 atmospheres. A seal 63 placed in the narrow lower part of the bore 35 surrounds the piston and prevents air from passing through the opening 37. The upper end of the piston 24 is secured by a washer and spring rings 64 to. the inner periphery of an elastic cup 65 fixed by its outer periphery in a groove 66 of the housing 34.
The cup 65 thus acts to close the upper end of the cavity 35 and, like a spring, to hold the piston 24 in its position of FIG. 2, the lower end of this piston 24 then being moved away from the valve isolation /.,la ,.
In operation, when the transmission 10 is placed in reverse, the face 27 of the cam moves over the rounded upper end of the piston 24, lowering the latter enough to contact the valve insulation 44. and away from ledge 39.
This places line 28 in communication with the source of pressurized air. At the same time, the ports 62 are placed out of coincidence with the ports 55 so that the exhaust valve is closed and air under pressure cannot escape from the housing 34 except through the line 28.
Referring now to FIG. 4, the gear shift motor device assembly 15 comprises a housing in three parts, consisting of a body 67, a ring 68 and a cap 69 rigidly assembled by bolts 71. The body 67 has the general shape of d. 'a cup, with a flange 72 extending around its open end.
The ring 68 is clamped between the flange 72 and the cap 69. At its other end, the body 67 has a wall 73, provided with a central opening and having a hollow protruding part 74, in one piece with the body, which protrudes the wall both inwardly and outwardly. The interior of portion 74 has a cylindrical bore 75 having at its outer end a flat radial shoulder 76, a narrower bore 77, and an even narrower end bore 78; this is used for mounting the sliding rod 29. A washer 79 placed on the shoulder 76 surrounds the rod 29. A fixed stop 80 placed on the body cooperates with a spring ring 81 placed on the rod 29 to limit the movement. from it to the outside.
A sliding sleeve 82 is mounted within the bore 75; it surrounds the rod 29 and it is limited in its axial displacement by a spring ring 83 placed on the body. A coil spring 84, compressed between washer 79 and sleeve 82, normally keeps these two parts spaced apart from one another. The wall 73 has a hollow boss 85 which is threaded for securing the connection of the pipe 28, and which has a channel 86 leading to the bore 75 between the washer and the sleeve 82. A driving diaphragm chamber 87 communicates with it. the channel 86 by a narrower channel 88.
The ring 68 has a radial channel 89, threaded at its outer end in order to receive the connection of the pipe 23.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The other chamber 91 is surrounded by the ring 68 and communicates with the channel 89. An elastic diaphragm or motor diaphragm 92 is clamped tightly by its periphery between the flange 72 and the ring 68. The central part of the diaphragm 92 is pierced. d9 an opening giving passage at 19 end, of reduced section 93 of the rod 29, and it is clamped between a cup 94, placed against the radial shoulder 95 of the rod 29 and a spacer block 96 wound at the end. end 93 of the rod.
A shutter diaphragm 97 is clamped between the ring 68 and the cap 69 so as to provide fluid tightness. The central portion of the diaphragm 97 is clamped between the spacer block 96 and a cup 98, which is mounted to the threaded end 99 of the rod portion 93. When a nut 101 is fully tightened, the cups, bulkheads and the space block form a sealed assembly constituting a central block between the shoulder 95 and the nut 101. The diaphragm 97 closes the outer side of the chamber 91.
When the chamber 91 is subjected to the pressure of the air from the reservoir 18 and the valve 12 is in the position of FIG. 2, the parts of the motor device occupy the position of the pin 4, in which the rod 29 is in its extreme left position and the cup 94 is in contact with the inner end face 102 of the protruding part 74.
When the valve 12 is opened by the cam 25, the spring 84 is compressed, the driving parts move to the right of the pin 4, the rod 29 coming to the limit of its right movement 4 and the cup 98 still moving to the right. singing the stop surface 103 of the cap 69. These are the two normal operating positions of the motor device.
In the assembly of the transfer case 11 (fig. 3) a spur gear 104 actuated by the motor is constantly engaged with a spur gear 103 and actuates the gear 105 is rotatably mounted on a front shaft. 19 auxiliary drive axle motor or drive shaft, 106 Two jammed clutches 107 and 108 with one-way drives in opposite directions, have their respective clutch drums 109 and 110 mounted on a sleeve 111 attached to the shaft 106 forward of 1-gear 105.
An axially sliding clutch collar 112 has at one of its ends an internally splined portion forming clutch teeth 113 engaging a row of clutch teeth 114 formed on a forward extension of the hub of the clutch. gear 105, the teeth 113 slidable on the row of teeth 114. A shorter inner row of clutch teeth 115 is formed inside the collar 112 at its other end and away from the spline 113;
the clutch drums 109 and 110 are provided with outer rows of clutch teeth 116 and 117 arranged to selectively cooperate with the inner teeth 115 of the clutch collar. The clutch teeth 113 are long enough to remain meshed with teeth 114 in all positions of the collar. 112.
A fork 118 is attached to the reciprocating shift operating rod 33 by a set screw 121, and cooperates with an annular groove 122 provided on the exterior of the clutch collar 112. , so that this collar 112 can be displaced axially with respect to the shaft 106 by an axial movement of the operating rod 33; rod which can slide in a bore 119 of the housing 120 is mounted for an axial reciprocating movement. on the housing of the transfer box by its inner end by means of suitable means (not shown) and its position is automatically adjusted by the control linkage system from the gearbox 10 as will be explained in detail later.
The clutch collar 112 can be moved between two positions; in one its internal toothing 115 meshes with the teeth 116 of the drum to establish a control connection in one direction between the clutch 107 and the gear 105 to drive the front axle forward.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
as shown in fig 3;
In the other position, the teeth 115 mesh with the teeth 117 to establish a control connection in one direction between the gear 105 and the clutch 108 in order to drive the front axle in reverse gear Si, to for whatever reason, the pressurized fluid no longer arrives from the reservoir 18, due to the rupture of one of the pipes 19, 22 or 23, or, in the case of the use of vacuum, if the vacuum breaks down. - must, the apparatus described above is arranged to automatically bring the clutch collar 112 to a neutral position, or point mor, in which the teeth 115 are placed in the space between the teeth 116 and 117 and do not mesh with one or the other.
When such a power failure occurs, both sides of diaphragm 92 are subjected to atmospheric pressure and the diaphragm aligns itself in the intermediate position determined by the extension of spring 84.
This suspension of power in order to bring the clutch to neutral can be carried out deliberately by providing at 21 a shut-off valve which also ensures communication of the pipes 22 and 23 with the atmosphere and which constitutes an important precaution for the maneuvering of the vehicle in certain conditions of absence.de transmission, such as during embarkation and disembarkation operations.
The transmission and gear ratios within the transfer case are preferably as set forth in U.S. Patent Application No. 202,103 filed December 21, 1950 in Buckendale's name, but it is will understand that the maneuvering device according to the invention is applicable to any clutch of this type. In the present embodiment of the invention, the flange 123 which is mounted with splines on the end of the shaft 106 projecting forward is connected by a suitable drive shaft, to the front drive axle d 'a six-wheel drive truck having rear drive axles in tandem, as in the aforementioned application.
In operation, when the vehicle is operated in forward gear, the parts are arranged as in Figs. 1 to 4, the shift bar 14 being in its left position so that the cam 25 is released from the piston 24. Under these conditions, the chamber 91 of the engine contains pressurized air, coming from the pipe 23 and tank 18, and the engine bulkhead is in its position of FIG. 4, since the engine chamber 87 is in communication with the atmosphere through line 28, valve chamber 38 and exhaust port 58. Rod 33 is therefore held in its left limit position. , shown in fig. 3, the gear 105 being in engagement with the drum 109 for the forward movement of the shaft 106.
In the exposed neization, the gear ratios are such that the wheels of the rear axle are actuated slightly faster than the gear 105, so that under normal road conditions the shaft 106, due to the friction between the wheels of the front axle and the road, turns faster than gear 105 and is therefore not actuated by the latter. When the rear wheels spin so that the rotation of shaft 106 falls at the speed of gear 105, a driving relationship is established through clutch 107. However, the invention also applies to a system in which there is always the drive transmission from gear 105 to shaft 106 in one direction or the other.
The above operating condition exists, except when the main transmission is brought into reverse or when no pressure comes from the motive power source, the bar 14 is in the position shown in solid lines in FIG. 1 when the transmission is in forward gear or in neutral.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
When the main transmission is brought into reverse, and in this case only, the bar 14 moves to the right of fig. 1 until the surface 27 of the cam comes into contact with the piston 24 and depresses it. this is enough to open the valve at 44 and close the exhaust channel, thereby passing pressurized air from the reservoir 18 through the pipe 22, the cavity 41, the rim 39, the chamber 38, the channel 49 and line 28 in the engine chamber 87 and bore 75.
Although the air is at the same pressure in the two chambers 87 and 91 of the motor device, the active surface of the diagram on the side of the chamber 87 is greater than its active surface on the side of the chamber 91, and , therefore, the diaphragm moved to the right (Fig. 4) until the cup 98 touches the stop surface 103. The sleeve 82 acts as a spring biased piston to aid this movement during in its early stages, but is stopped and retained in bore 75 by ring 84, rod 29 sliding axially in sleeve 82 to recompress spring 84.
This axial displacement of the rod 29 acts by means of the arm 32 to move the operating rod 33 to the right of FIG. 3, until the teeth 115 are in engagement with the teeth 117 and a drive in the direction inverse established between gear 105 and shaft 106.
When it is desired to return to a forward speed, the main transmission is changed and the bar 14 moves to allow the valve 12 to resume its position of the pin 2, whereby the chamber 87 is put in communication with The atmosphere and the relaxation of the spring 84 sets the diaphragm in motion towards its left position of the pin 4.
In the two operating positions of the diaphragm, the spring 84 is compressed or banded, so that when the control valve is actuated, the reaction of the motor device is instantaneous.
During the change from reverse to forward, the narrow channel 88 exerts a regulating action to slow down the movement of the rod 29 to the left and thus decrease the tendency of the teeth of the clutch to collide and the movement. the same regulating action is exerted in the maneuver in the opposite direction since the channel 88 slows the admission of pressurized air into the chamber 87.
If the air pressure fails and the motor device 15 and the clutch collar 112 are in the position corresponding to a forward speed, the air contained in the chamber 91 of the motor device flows through the pipe 23 through the system towards the leak The atmospheric pressure prevailing in the two chambers 87 and 91, the driving device 15 assumes its neutral position described above and brings the clutch collar 112 to its neutral position.
If the driving device 15 and the clutch collar 112 are in the reverse position and the air pressure is lacking, the air contained in the chamber 91 will flow through the line 23 through the system to the system. the escape. The air in chamber 87 escapes through line 28, through chamber 38 through open seal 45, through line 22 through the system to the leak.
In two out of three of the positions of the drive device, namely the two running positions, forward and reverse, the spring 84 is compressed or strained, so that with a loss of air pressure from the system there is in this sufficient force emerges to bring the driving device 15 and the clutch 112 to the neutral position.
Figs. 5 to 7 show another embodiment of the invention, in which the compressed air reservoir is connected by a pipe 124 to a group 125 forming a control valve and mounted on the transmission 10; this valve 125 is connected by pipes 126 and 127 at opposite ends. of a motor device 128 mounted on the transfer case 11, to an end which will appear later o
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
The main transmission 10 comprises a gear shift bar 129 which is similar to the bar 14 of fig 1 in that it assumes the same position for all the forward gear positions and the neutral or neutral position of the gear. main transmission, and another single position for placing the main transmission in reverse.
The bar 129 enters a housing 131 which is secured to the transmission housing by bolts 132.
The operating bar 129 (FIG. 6) is provided with two surfaces 132 and 133 inclined in opposite directions, separated by a flat surface 134 which extends in the direction of the axis. A flat inclined surface 135 is diametrically opposed to the surface 134; beyond the surface 135, the section of the bar is reduced.
Two valve arms 136 and 137 protrude from two opposite sides of the casing 131; these two arms are essentially identical in construction and the same references will be used for each of them. The arm 136 comprises a part 138 having an exhaust port and having a hollow protruding part 139 fixed in an opening of the housing 131 and a part 141 comprising the control valve and provided with a cap 142. The parts 138 and 141 and the cap 142 are rigidly assembled and fixed to the casing 131 by screws 143.
The bonnet 142 has a threaded opening to receive a fitting 145. The part comprising the control valve 141 has a threaded opening 146 for receiving a fitting 147 placed at the end of a pipe 126. The opening 146 is connected. by a channel 148 inside a hollow rim 149 of the valve. A sliding valve member 151 is biased toward the flange 149 by a spring 152, compressed between said member and the bonnet 142 so that, in the valve arm 136, pressurized air is admitted into the valve. chamber 153, but closing the valve at 149-151 prevents this pressurized air from entering the exhaust line 126.
The pipe 126 is in communication with the atmosphere through the bore 154 of a piston 155 which can slide in the part comprising the exhaust 138 and which has radial orifices 156 communicating with an exhaust chamber 157 having a threaded outlet 158 for a suitable filter which admits atmospheric pressure.
The plunger 155 is biased towards the bar 129 by a spring 159, reacting between the head of the piston 161 and the bottom of a housing 162 of the spring. A spherical ball 163 is clamped in the head of the piston and, in the position of the bar in FIG. 6, this ball 163 is placed on the lower surface 134 of the bar. A plunger collar 164 cooperates with a spring ring assembly to prevent the piston from leaving its housing.
Thus, as shown in fig 7, in the valve arm 136, the spring 159 moves the piston 155 away from the valve member 151 and, therefore, its bore serves as a channel between the pipe 126 and the orifice d. 'exhaust 158. On the other hand, the ball 163 in the valve arm 137 is in contact with the periphery of the bar 129 in its elevated part so that this piston 155 is placed against the valve element 151 to close. the exhaust to the port 158 and open the line 127 to the pressurized air which arrives through the line 166, the fitting 167 and the threaded opening 144 in the lower cap 142. The line 127 is connected to the exhaust opening 146 via the connector 168.
The motor device 168 (fig. 7) comprises a cylinder 170 which is closed on one side by a head 171 and which is inserted by its other end into a cylindrical cavity 172 of the casing 120 of the transfer box. cavity 172 serving to form the other end of the cylinder.
Screws 173 secure the cylinder to the crankcase 120. The cylinder 170 contains

a double-acting piston 174 fixed by its center to the end 175 of reduced section and threaded of the operating bar 33, by means of a nut 176. Several elastic piston rings 177 of rubber or the like surround the piston 174 and an annular seal 178 surrounds the operating bar 33 to prevent the fluid from leaking. Similar springs 179 and 180 compressed between a central flange 181 of the piston 174 and retainers 182 and 183 slidably fitted to the piston. interior of piston 174 act to retain and guide the piston as described below.
The retaining devices for the springs 182 and 183 are thus placed on the piston 174 which can move relative to them along its axis and the spring rings 184 and 185 placed in a recess in the internal wall of the piston 174 limit the pressure. relative movement of this piston 174 and of the retaining devices 182 and 183, A threaded orifice 186 arranged in the head 171 receives a connector 187 fixing the pipe 127 to the driving device and opening onto a chamber 188 of the driving device on one side du'piston.
A threaded orifice 189 intended to fix a connector 191 connects the pipe 126 to the motor device and opens onto channels 192 and 193 leading into a chamber 194 on the other side of the piston 1740
When the transmission shift bar 129 is moved to the position shown in Fig. 6, the upper valve stop ball 163 rests on the surface 134 and the valve piston attached thereto. associated is the exhaust position, maintaining atmospheric pressure in the chamber 194 of the engine device (figo 7).
During this time the stop ball 163 of the lower valve rests on the outside diameter of the operating bar, thus connecting the line 127 to the air pressure of the pressurized inlet line 166 and admitting the pressure. Air pressure from the inlet line 166 to the reverse position control line and to the engine chamber 188. This causes the piston 174 to move to the right in FIG. 7.
When this happens, the bar 33, through the fork 118 moves the clutch collar 112 to the right in FIG. 7 to engage the teeth 115 with the teeth 117 to perform the drive in reverse position o
When the maneuver bar 129 is moved to the left of Fig. 6, which occurs when neutral is selected in transmission 10, the upper ball remains for a moment on surface 134 but the lower ball rolls downward on the shaft. surface 135 to the planar surface 140, so that the lower piston 155 moves towards the bar to seat isolation 151 of the valve and connect to the atmosphere the line 127 and the chamber 188 of the driving device.
The spring 180 returns the piston 174 and the actuating mechanism of the clutch to the neutral position as shown in FIG. 7. At this time, the two chambers of the driving device are in communication with 19 atmospheres due to the partial overlap of the surface 134 and the flat part 140 of the bar.
A movement of the maneuvering bar even further to the right of fig 6, which occurs when the transmission 10 is operated in the opposite direction causes the upper ball 163 to roll up the surface 133 onto the larger diameter of the bar 1299 the lower ball 163 remaining during this time on the flat surface 140 and Isolation 151 of the upper valve is lifted from its seat to thereby connect the pressurized air to the line 126 and to the chamber 194 while 19 'exhaust is closed. This moves the shift bar 33 and the fork 118 to the left in Fig. 7, thus causing the teeth 115 to mesh with the teeth 116 and providing the shift mechanism of the transfer case with the linkage. intended for forward travel.
It will be appreciated that if vacuum is used as a source of energy instead of compressed air the functions of the valve group of

control are reversed and the pipes 126 and 127 of FIG. 5 must be reversed as to their connections.
As the piston 174 is moved to the left of the pin 7, the retainer 182 remains in contact with the head 171, the extreme hollow portion of the surrounding piston 1, and the spring 179 is compressed. During this time the retainer 183 and the spring 180 are carried to the left with the piston 174 due to the spring ring 185 holding the retainer 183. When movement of the piston 174 takes place towards the left. right in fig. 7, the reverse occurs. It will be appreciated from this fact that the guiding of the piston is caused by the springs 180 and 182, tending to return to the central neutral position shown in FIG. 7.
Also in this embodiment as in fig 4, the loss of fluid pressure (or vacuum) causes the clutch collar 112 to move towards its neutral position.
It is understood that the present invention is not limited to operation by air pressure or by vacuum; It is in fact possible to replace the group of control valves 125 with a cylinder using a closed hydraulic system to effect the gear change. In all cases, conduits which conduct fluid and which are relatively immobile replace the levers, articulations and springs connecting the reverse gear bar to the clutch operating shaft placed in the transfer case.
It is also understood that the invention is not limited to the embodiments shown and described which have been given only by way of example.
